“What supposedly distinguishes humans from their primate ancestors is their abil-ity not to use tools but to integrate them into everyday activities, find fresh uses for them, and to create new ones.” - Graphic Design: Now in Production

“Any form of art is directly connected to the tool or tools used to make it. Just a few decades ago graphic design was almost entirely a hand-created art, made by work-ers sitting at drafting tables using physi-cal tools. The field we now work in is now drastically different. Nearly every design process happens using computers, in a sort of ‘virtual’ space designed to re-create the older tools that are now obsolete. How has this change affected the ways in which design work is made? How has it changed the types of work that is made? How has it changed the way we think about design?”- Andrew

“Knowledege about production was a necessary part of any design education, gained in the classroom through books such as James Craig’s 1974 classic Production for the Graphic Designer, or in the workplace, whether it was how some-thing was printed or bound in the case of graphic design, or manufactured and engi-neered in the case of products.” - Graphic Design: Now in Production

“Clay lends itself to an either subtractive or additive construc-tion, and responds according to every touch the user makes by creating a depres-sion of some sort from the action being performed upon it. It’s a tool that epitomizes action and reaction.” - Ellie

“Human use of tools has been theorized as an explination for human evolution stimu-lating such things as increased brain size coupled with the unique human ability to mimic behavior and thus spread ideas and techniques, which led to the rise of agricul-ture, the domestication of animals and well, civilization itself.” - Graphic Design: Now in Production

“I use washi tape to imitate fabric to see how patterns could intersect. I like that it is transparent sort of- I also use it in mixed media paintings.” - Nicole

“The tool in effect transforms our mate-rial and virtual reali-ties and, by doing so, it transforms us.” - Graphic Design: Now in Production

“One of the most important tools on my list is my sketchbook. I carry my sketchbook (or an alternative notebook) and marker with me at all times to sketch an idea, make a note of something or write down random thoughts. My sketchbook is the very first thing I reach for when it comes time to design anything. I try to get down a bunch of thumbnail sketches before I even begin to research something further or collect additional reference points. My sketchbook gives me the freedom to put down anything and everything, no matter how stupid it may be and it always there for me to refer back to at some point. I feel as though my sketch-book does not limit the outcome of the action I perform with it in anyway, primarily because it is simply a starting point. Everything I put down in my sketchbook is eventually developed into a more complete idea and having sketches right off the bat enables that process.” - Thando

“The paper cutter is a tool I often use when mocking up layouts at work. After design-ing a page we will print the layout with crop marks, and trim it to its exact size. The paper cutter allows for us to see how the layout would look without the noise of what is bleeding off the page. By cropping along the edges we can see the layout for what it actually would be. The paper cutter leaves its mark but cutting away excess informa-tion, while also taking away the crop marks which allow for us to know exactly where to cut into. The limit of our cutter is size. We cannot cut anything bigger than 12x18 inches. If we were to need anything bigger than this we would not be able to cut it in the same way.” - Rachel

“The Whole Earth Catalog preseged the introduction of the ulti-mate tool, the personal computer, and the technological ethos of today’s internet culture that it would spawn: the world of self publishing, user-generated and agregated ontent, open soure systems, distributive platforms such as app stores, and the net-works and connectivity of social media, cloud computing and fie sharing” - Graphic Design: Now in Production

“Adobe Photoshop has transformed the way designers work with pixel images. Below is an example (a very rough example for demonstration purposes) of how I can import a photo in Pho-toshop and adjust the image levels of light. For instance, I shot a photograph of the sign. The lighting around the sign is bright, however, the sign itself was dark. With Photoshop, I can target the sign and simply adjust the levels to lighten up the sign. Al-though this tool can help me light the sign up, it could look too “Photoshopped” if one chooses to place the levels high on the sign and not pay attention to the surrounding light of the photo, creating an unrealistic effect. “ - Jessica

“After all, if what you used to produce could be done by anyone with a computer, what does anyone need a designer for?” - Graphic Design: Now in Production

“Pencil drawing is the first stage of designing for me. It is crucial to decide overall silhouettes and shapes by blind drawing with inspiration images. The blind drawing often suggests me to capture beautiful and creative design ideas. I develop the components from the drawing and then, I start refine them into detailed pencil drawing. “ - Hyosun

“Photoshop can draw in the page, and we can edit the images and combined them. Also, Photoshop can help to create layout, and movie clips too. I think that Photoshop has variety of function that a great tool for designer, because the tool will help you that any 2D format from the functions.” - Heesoek
