Many companies have come up with innovative tool bits with major development ranging from reducing cutter wear to design enhancements. Also, innovations have been seen in providing longevity to the bit and improve bits penetration rates. Given below are tool bits manufactured by various companies which has contributed to the improved properties of tool bit in one form or another. Smith Bits, a Schlumberger company ONYX 360 rolling PDC helps in reducing time consuming trips of changing bits by providing increased bit durability. This is achieved by making the bit free to revolve 360° during drilling. Due to 360 degree rotation, fresh cutting face of the bit is always in touch with the material, thus increasing the bit’s overall life by an average of 50%. Also, as the whole surface of the tool bit is used all the time, wear is reduced on the bit which results in fewer replacement of tool bits. MegaForce bit by Halliburton The tough new MegaForce bit has an improved blade design to overcome transition forces. The innovation applied in this bit has helped cutters sustain greater transition force. In a scenario where the bit grind slowly into a hard rock, then whirls through the soft part of the rock in the middle, picking up momentum and torque. Suddenly, it hits another hard part of the rock. This transition can break or put lots of stress on the tool. This new MegaForce bit has been designed to overcome such transition forces. These bits have strategically placed "micro" nozzles which helps in directing the flow of cut. In further enhancement to this bit, the bit has been designed with a shorter shank length and 14% reduction of bit-to- bend distance, to improve directional control. Bipico Industries (Tools) Pvt. Tool bit design innovation has been progressing on many fronts through the years.

Smith Bits, a Schlumberger company

ONYX 360 rolling PDC helps inreducing time consuming trips ofchanging bits by providing increased bitdurability. This is achieved by makingthe bit free to revolve 360° duringdrilling. Due to 360 degree rotation, fresh cutting face of the bit is always intouch with the material, thus increasingthe bit’s overall life by an average of50%. Also, as the whole surface of thetool bit is used all the time, wear isreduced on the bit which results in fewerreplacement of tool bits.

MegaForce bit by Halliburton

The tough new MegaForce bit has an improved blade design toovercome transition forces. The innovation applied in this bit hashelped cutters sustain greater transition force. In a scenario wherethe bit grind slowly into a hard rock, then whirls through the softpart of the rock in the middle, picking up momentum and torque.Suddenly, it hits another hard part of the rock. Imax and Imax+ bits by Varel International

Diamond impregnated bits help in drilling through thetoughest of material. Imax drilling bit takes thistechnology to the new level by providing innovationwith the strict diamond selection procedure featuringdiamonds of similar size and quality, improveddiamond-matrix bonding, and a new process thatensures uniform diamond distribution. The innovationin design created by Varel International allowscustomization to address specific formations orspecific basin characteristics. Parameters like matrixhardness, diamond size, and concentration can all bevaried to match the application with this new design.

NOV’s SpeedDrill bit

NOV has invented a cutter index whereindex can be selected depending on aparticular set of condition. The cutterindex divides the resistance into 3 failuremechanism, i.e. thermal degradation, abrasion, and impact. This helps incutters to use the suitable index for aspecific grade of material.

This has helped in increasing the efficiency and improving stability of the tool. This has alsocontributed to reduced vibration related tool failures, improved borehole condition, and cost savings.
