• Social networking site
• Allows for communication through various utilities
• Created by Mark Zuckerburg “from his Harvard dorm room”
• Used primarily by young people
• More than 350 million active users
Culture Lost
• Facebook (and other E-communication tools) have led to a loss of verbal communication, physical activity, and social activity
• We could benefit from USING FACEBOOK LESS
E-Communication
• Verbal communication is not required
• Communication has become far less personal
• Communication has become shorter, less informative
Physical Activity• 320,833,333 hours
every day spent worldwide on Facebook
• Facebook requires virtually no physical activity
• Obesity rates are sky-high in America now
Community/Social Activity• 320,833,333 hours
• Time spent on Facebook could be spent with family or friends, or used for community/global service activities
• Newsweek article: “When I...imagine the good I could have done instead, it depresses me”
• Some may use groups such as “We Will Donate $1.00 to Haiti for Every Person That Joins” as justification to stay on Facebook
In Conclusion...
• Facebook has led to a loss of culture and a decrease in social communication
• Incredible amount of time spent on Facebook worldwide every day.
• Time could be put to better use
• WE SHOULD DECREASE THE TIME WE SPEND ON FACEBOOK
