I first learned of Joseph Cor

who sent me a clipping from a
local New York paper. It was
obviously written by someone

I met Joseph Cornell throughan odd circumstance; about
1964 as a young person living
in Queens. I was looking for
summer work. I read an ad fo r
an assistant in an art shop.
I arrived at the address, expecting a commercial hobby- --::
art shop of sorts, and instead
found Corne ll's row home in
Flushing. My first meeti ng
that day with Joseph Cornell
was both opaque and irresis.

1did not clearly understand
who and what he was, as a
person 01an artis t, until half
the summer had passed. In
dusting the porch one day, I
found magazine articles r -
vealing him to me.
• His life seemed, at tne time,
hampered by the physical in
capacities of his brother
Robert and his mother. Cornell
felt he could not leave them
alone, yet would not "turn
them over" to what he saw
as the insensitivities of hired
nurses. He seemed to like me,
and so I stayed on. wpsable t o takP sllort t p5 to
Flushing's Main Street to
peruse the 5 and 1Oc stores
for goodies, and be out in the
world for a while. Once, weboth went to Kresge's (his
favorite) and he mesmerized

Robert was an avid collector
of model trains l n raaJ I think
that was the or i91nul lor
Cornell's w rm relationship
with Tony <rurtis. I recall my
