Konnichiwa Everyone. Have you ever wondered why we teach Japanese at St Brendan’s? Or what your child is learning in Japanese classes? Perhaps you have heard your child sing some Japanese songs and are wondering what they mean. Are you wondering if it is good for your child to study a different language when they need to focus on English? Maybe you would like to go to Japan and want to find out a bit more about the country and culture. On our Parent Curriculum Evening we will explore these topics, and see some interesting and fun clips about Japan, JPop, and talk about what your child is learning and how to support them. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions about the program. Please come to see the presentation in the Japanese room. Kindly, Robyn Kercher

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS THANK YOU to all those parents who came along and supported their children at our Ash Wednesday Mass. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Liturgical season of Lent. As part of our Lenten journey, all classes will be learning about the Principles of Catholic Social Teaching; those principles which underline the work of organisations such as CARITAS. Catholic Social Teaching (CST) offers a way of thinking, being and seeing the world. It provides a vision for a just society in which the dignity of all people is recognised, and those who are vulnerable are cared for. It consists of an interrelated body of Catholic social thought and principles which can be used to reflect on and guide how we relate to one another in our local and global communities. (Catholic Social Services Australia) Each week we will explore one of these Principles.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Preparation for this Sacrament, which is offered to any baptised Catholic in Year 3 and above, begins next Thursday. If your child is eligible, but has not received a note, please contact Helen Renehan at school. Thank you.

Week 1: HUMAN DIGNITY Human dignity is something that can’t be taken away. Catholic Social Teaching states that each and every person has value, is worthy of great respect and must be free from slavery, manipulation and exploitation. “How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points? This is a case of exclusion.” (Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium HUMAN DIGNITY)

Social and Emotional Health

As well as doing the You Can Do It! program we also use a number of other resources to give children a variety of strategies to help deal with whatever life throws at them. One of the resources is BOUNCE BACK. The BOUNCE BACK acronym can be used when facing challenging problems.

Bad times don’t last. Things always get better. Stay optimistic.

Other people can help if you talk to them. Get a reality check.

Unhelpful thinking makes you feel more upset.

Nobody is perfect-not you and not others.

Concentrate on the positives (no matter how small) and use laughter.

Everybody experiences sadness, hurt, failure, rejection and setbacks sometimes. They are a normal part of life. Try not to personalise them.

Blame fairly-how much of what happened was because of you, how much was because of others and how much was because of bad luck or circumstances?

Accept the things you can’t change, but try to change what you can first.

Catastrophising exaggerates your worries. Don’t believe the worst possible picture.

Keep things in perspective. It is only one part of your life.

The Year One / Two learning space has jumped into action in all areas showing the versatility of having the Year One/Two classes in such close proximity to each other.

LEARNING LADDER—Counting A learning ladder helps students know their successes and where their learning heads to next. Sienna is proud of her achievements and knows the next rung she needs to climb in counting. Our next learning ladder will be punctuation. The students look forward to seeing how many rungs they can climb.

You Can Do It All year one / two used their ‘Getting Along’ key to make the letters in our You Can Do It sign. All students have worked well in the open learning space and have shown how they get along regardless of grouping. We are proud of their great start.

Digital Task Board Students are learning a greater level of independence by using a digital task board at the beginning of Word Study, Reading and Mathematics. The task board informs them whether they will be working with Mrs. Graham, Mrs. Supple, Mrs. Renehan, Mike Park, Jodie Clifford, Melissa Rickman or Mike Ryan. It lets them know the type of task they will be doing such as an independent task, small group/partner task, point of need teaching group, digital technologies task or direct instruction small group.

In the Spotlight Students have shone in the first few weeks of school showing skills in a variety of areas. Each few weeks we choose a student who has tried extra hard and we display their work in the ‘spotlight’. Congratulations to our first two students Maali and Lily who shone in our open-ended maths counting task. Don’t forget to see who is next to shine in our hub.

Junior Football Information Sessions & Registration

We will be holding a parent Information session Monday 26th February @ 5.30pm. We will be providing information for the coming season and giving out forms that you will be required to fill in and return to us before your child can play so it is highly recommended you attend. Registrations for the 2018 are open and will close on Wednesday 28th February so that we can finalise numbers & teams. If you played last year you would have had a link sent to you at your last registered email address. If you have changed it since last season you will need to contact Michelle on 0438 514 101 and have it updated. Thanks for your cooperation in making 2018 a successful one
