Tone and Mood Vocabulary

Purpose: Identifying the most appropriate tone and mood in a passage is made more challenging when a student has a limited vocabulary related to this concept. Teaching students a wide variety of tone and mood words not only raises their awareness of the nuances of emotions and writing styles, it also will prepare them to make the correct identification when given multiple choices on a classroom or standardized test. Many times, students are not able to correctly answer these kinds of questions simply because they do not recognize the words available for them to choose from.

List Instructions: Each set of vocabulary includes a list in the form of a student handout and a teacher highlighted list. Give each student a copy of the student handout list. After discussing the words and their definitions, give them a few minutes to (individually or in groups) categorize each word as positive, negative, or neutral. Students can turn their list over and physically sort the words by writing them into a three column chart drawn on the back. This simple process will actively engage the students with the words, causing them to make connections on their own. (Furthermore, practice categorizing tones and moods into these three categories will help students to narrow down similar answers on a multiple-choice assessment.) After all the students have finished, display the highlighted list on a large screen so that students can have the correct categories to study for the quiz. Allowing students to highlight their own list in the same way will even further solidify the category in their minds. For best results, be sure to announce at this point that categorizing these words correctly IS a part of the quizzes.

Quiz Instructions: Each vocabulary list has additional advanced words. These can be used for “honors” classes or even for individual students if you are differentiating within a single class. Knowing these additional words will benefit all students, so they have been added to the regular quizzes as bonus words in the form of a brief matching section at the end. If you choose to use this section of the test, add one point to their score for each one that is correct. If you do not want this section on the quizzes, you will need to cover it with blank paper when you make your copies so that it will not appear.
