How did Laughtermarket come about?Sami: We were already running our own individual comedy nights and some crazy fool suggested we run a night together..Rue: Yeah, that was me.What can people expect when they come to Laughtermarket?S: Tears! …of laughter obviously. We did have one quite famous act start breaking things once - the audience loved it but my buttocks were clenched tight thinking about the bill we might get landed with. There is also a bar about 30ft long* at which you cannot help but get served! We have well known acts performing alongside brand spanking new comics making a name for themselves. Oh and David Bowie** usually sings in the interval.R: A friendly crowd made up of the decent, salt-of-the-earth web designers from Hove. How did you come up with the name?S: You laugh, its cheap. It’s a laughtermarket!

you laugh, it’s cheap, it’s: laughtermarketinterview...

How do you find the talent for each show and what do you look for?S: As gigging comics ourselves we work with these geniuses in different clubs around the country then poach the acts for our amusement.Laughtermarket as it stands is only £1.50, how do you go about deciding where to pitch the price for a comedy evening?R: It’s calculated by taking the amazingness of the night then dividing it by a hundred.S: Are you saying the night is 1500% pure genius?R: YesS: We may not understand percentages but it’s a f***ing excellent comedy night!Given a choice of any comedians (alive or dead) what would be your

perfect ‘fantasy’ line up?S : Ava Vidal, Seann Walsh, Phil Kay…R: …but they’ve already played at The Laughtermarket! Personally, I’d like to have a bunch of dead ones, still dead.Lastly, what’s the best/most unusual joke you’ve heard at Laughtermarket?R: Darren Maskell said something pretty funny when his chainsaw wouldn’t work.Laughtermarket. Thursday 10 May, 19:30 (& monthly). TOM - The Old Market. May lineup: AVA VIDALWith: Luisa Omielan, Tim Fusciardi, Mike Cox, Will Allen, Dan Chatfield, Pete Armstrong.MC: Sami Stone.* & ** Facts unsupported by any actual evidence, Ed.

We talk to Rue Barratt and Sami Stone, co-hosts of the soon-to-be-legendary new comedy night, Laughtermarket. (£1.50 entry!)

commercially viable theatre, and turned it completely on its head,” says Rachel Blackman, founder of Stillpoint Theatre Company. She is referring to The Department of Unreliable

“Our aim is that the audience member enjoy themselves. We don’t ask that they be the performer. We will do all the work, they just have to play along.”

“Of course,” adds Emma, “if they want to take a more active role then that’s great, because then we’re able to build the show around their contribution. But, really, all we ask of them is that they say ‘yes’!”

It must be challenging, I suggest, to have to think on your feet and respond to your audience. “Yes, but its also great fun,” says Rachel, with a glint in her eye. She’s clearly unafraid of the challenge. “We do, of course, have some possible scenarios worked out beforehand. But how the show develops is totally dependent upon who walks in, and who sits down in the chair opposite us. That’s the real mischief of it”.

First performed at last year’s White Night Festival, and back by popular demand, this micro theatre project promises to leave you elated. The Department of Unreliable Memoirs. 09, 16-17, 23-24 May 2012. 10 min performances from 14:00 - 23:00. £5.00. TOM - The Old Market.

“it’s ten minutes with two actors and one audience member”Memoirs, which is set to make its Brighton Fringe debut at The Old Market this week.

Dreamt up by Rachel, and developed in collaboration with theatre-maker and self-proclaimed “cheerer-upper” Emma Kilby, the cast of this theatre project outnumbers its audience. “Its ten minutes with two actors and one audience member,” says Rachel. “It’s not commercially viable, but it’s great fun.”

The piece is set in a government department that, unbeknown to two of its employees, actually closed down long ago. It will be performed down in the basement dressing rooms of The Old Market. “It’s a perfect setting,” says Emma. “Hidden away down here you really get the sense that this government department has been totally forgotten.”

As each new audience member enters the Kafka-esque back office, Rachel and Emma work with them to retrieve their forgotten memories.
