President’s Messageby FBLA National President Sam Kessler
Welcome to conference season! Gear up for an exciting, fast-paced few months, and make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.
Remember—the year is not over yet! Spend the rest of this school year planning fun and valuable events to help retain members for next year. The best way to start off 2015–16 with a bang is to ensure the return of engaged, enthusiastic, and experienced members.
For those of you who are attending a State Leadership Conference, I have a challenge for you:
Make it a goal to meet as many new members as possible and stay connected after your conference. I challenge you to expand your network by connecting with five or more new people at your conference.
Seek out chapter officers from a school near you and resolve to work together in the future to plan joint events like fundraisers or business plan competitions. You may even be able to assemble a larger FBLA team for your local March for Babies.
For college-bound seniors, if you know where you are going to school next year, conferences are the perfect place to meet future classmates. It is always nice to know someone before you start your first semester, and who knows … you may even find a roommate!
My challenge to connect with new people extends to the National Leadership Conference (NLC). Establishing a network around the country may help you gain opportunities down the line. The opportunity to collaborate with FBLA chapters in different states can provide unique learning experiences for all members involved.
I have met countless members Stepping Up to the Challenge within FBLA and beyond. New students are joining FBLA each day and I am glad to see increased participation in national programs like the BAAs and CSAs.
I am so confident in the future of this organization, and I look forward to watching FBLA grow and develop even more when we CONNECT next year.
It’s hard to believe the 2014–15 year is coming to a close. It has been outstanding serving as PBL national president. This position has been an amazing opportunity that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
For those of you who will be joining us at the National Leadership Conference (NLC) in the Windy City, I have a few tips and tricks for a successful NLC trip:
• Pack an extra tie, belt, shirt/blouse, and shoes. You never know what to expect.• Save room in your luggage for awards and souvenirs, and of course your FBLA-PBL MarketPlace items.• Roll your clothes in your luggage—this will save a lot of room! All hotels provide an iron.• Plan some last-minute practice for your events! Make sure to use the last few weeks before the
conference to have your presentations on point! Don’t overthink your event, you have already qualified for the NLC and you are the best of the best in your state!
• Bring business cards to network with other members from across the nation.• Have fun! Chicago is where my FBLA-PBL NLC journey began. I will never forget my first National
Leadership Conference—there are so many exciting opportunities for you!
To the graduating seniors, congratulations—you made it! I personally extend an invitation for you to join PBL. If you are interested in knowing if the school you plan to attend has a PBL chapter, please email me [email protected].

Spring 2015 3
Each year, FBLA-PBL strives to add new national partnerships and enhance these partnerships to offer new opportunities for FBLA members to gain real-world business experiences through establishment of FBLA programs that capitalize on our highly-entrepreneurial alumni network.
Among other exciting new sponsors and partners added this year is start-up company Better World Collective (BWC). BWC was co-created by 2008–09 FBLA National President Joe Riley. Joe is pursuing his doctorate in International Relations at Oxford University as a Rhodes and Truman Scholar and is an infantry officer in the United States Army.
In college, Joe and his classmate, Whit Hunter, began to design an online platform to help student organizations use the Internet to increase their fundraising potential and minimize the work that often accompanies student fundraisers. The software they created allows organizations to host simple, secure, and successful online auctions, regardless of the organization’s technical expertise or prior experience with auctions.
As leaders of the “start-up generation,” FBLA members are ready to Step Up to the Challenge of helping build and grow the next generations of start-ups. Socially conscious entrepreneurship is the wave of the future—a wave that present and former FBLA members are helping to lead and power!
We are in the final stages of developing a BWC program that will allow FBLA members a hands-on, real-world opportunity to learn about social entrepreneurship.
This partnership will help motivated members gain the real-world experience they need to someday run their own company. In doing so, BWC will help empower members to Step Up to the Challenge of building businesses that seek to not only make money, but also achieve meaningful progress in their communities and around the world.

National Officer ElectionsAn important and exciting part of the NLC is the election of the 2015–16 national officers. Students interested in
running for national office can request the National Officer Candidate Guide from their state adviser, or download
it from fbla-pbl.org. Candidates display literature at their campaign booths where members can talk with them about their
platforms. Don’t miss the spirited competition and bid for delegate votes by the candidates and their campaign
teams.
Institute for LeadersThis high-energy, intensive, two-day seminar is a focused leadership experience for state and local chapter officers, as well as members and advisers.
This training conference prepares student leaders and members to assume their elected responsibilities and develop valuable life skills.

Serving as a local/state chapter voting delegate at the NLC can be an exciting experience. Here are some tips:
Campaign booths: Any member can talk to candidates and learn more details about their goals and qualifications.
Campaign speeches: Speeches give members a brief overview of each candidate’s goals. Candidates for president, secretary, and treasurer (national offices) give their campaign speeches at the opening session. Candidates for regional vice president give speeches at the first regional session.
Q & A session: Delegates can ask candidates questions and compare each candidate’s answer. The Q & A for vice presidents is after campaign speeches. The president, secretary, and treasurer Q & A time is listed in the NLC program. Only voting delegates may ask the vice president candidates questions. Voting delegates and state presidents may ask national office candidates questions.
Represent your chapter: For local chapter delegates, talk to your chapter the night before voting, so that you can make a decision on which vice president candidate will receive your vote. For state delegates, get opinions from as many chapters as possible. Be sure to have alternates to vote for in case your first choice candidate is dropped. As you represent your state/local chapter, be sure to keep everyone’s opinions in mind while voting.
Be on time: It is important for all delegates to show up on time (and in business attire) to the national and their respective regional voting sessions. Business can only be transacted once a quorum is present. A quorum is the minimum number of members that must be present in order for business to be conducted. A quorum for all business at the NLC is a majority of all registered delegates.
Voting session expectations: Listen to the directions and fill out ballots as you are instructed to do so. Voting sessions can last less than one hour or could go on for several hours. A candidate has to receive a majority before he/she can be elected. If no candidate receives a majority, the person receiving the lowest amount of votes will be dropped from the fourth vote and each subsequent vote. It takes time to count and recount votes, so come prepared to be in the session until someone receives a majority.

Stepping Up to the National Leadership Conferenceby FBLA Mountain Plains Region Vice President Sarah Niederee
With state leadership conferences coming to an end, it’s not too early to begin planning for the National Leadership Conference (NLC) in Chicago, the Windy City! The NLC will be June 29– July 2, 2015. Take advantage of all the NLC has to offer: internship positions, networking opportunities, competitive events, sightseeing, elections, and much more!
The Institute for Leaders (IFL) leadership program takes place prior to the National Leadership Conference. Participants select a leadership track to enhance leadership skills on a local, state, and national levels. This year’s IFL will be June 28–29. This opportunity allows you to expand your leadership skills and network with the best leaders in the organization, as well as many business professionals.
To prepare for your competitive events, make sure you take advantage of every opportunity available to you. Many practice tests can be found online. For performance events, sample presentations can be found on YouTube. Practice in front of a local Rotary Club or even your local school board. Whatever your event, practice makes perfect.
Remember to experience the beautiful city of Chicago! The Adler Planetarium, Brookfield Zoo, Wrigley Field, and Chicago Riverwalk are just a few attractions Chicago has to offer! #NLC2015 is YOUR opportunity to Step Up to the Challenge. Embrace every moment of every opportunity.

FBLA, double or even triple their fundraising by enabling chapters to increase their donor base and helping supporters think creatively about noncash ways of contributing. Advanced technology removes 90% of the work that is traditionally associated with this type of fundraiser—making it now incredibly easy to run a successful and engaging online auction. And, because of BWC’s history with FBLA, we are offering local chapters the best deals ever, including no upfront cost and personal, seven-days-a-week support.

Meet 2014’s Winner: Claysburg-Kimmel FBLA (Pennsylvania)Claysburg-Kimmel FBLA members Elizabeth Weiland, Samantha Medasie, and Maria Knisely attended the 2014 NLC in Nashville where they networked with fundraising companies for ideas. While speaking with Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, they learned of the #SweetStop contest that required members to submit a photo with the Krispy Kreme Cruiser and creatively demonstrate the partnership between FBLA and Krispy Kreme.
The girls, dressed in pajamas and FBLA T-shirts, captured a photo of them “dreaming of FBLA and Krispy Kreme.” The top five photos were posted to the FBLA-PBL National Center Facebook page where people voted for their favorite. Claysburg-Kimmel secured the most votes and won a visit from the Krispy Kreme Cruiser to Claysburg-Kimmel High School and Claysburg-Kimmel Elementary.
In October, the Cruiser traveled from North Carolina to Pennsylvania to distribute tasty treats to the students. Elizabeth, Samantha, and Maria distributed doughnuts and Krispy Kreme hats to all of the students, and students toured the Krispy Kreme Cruiser. The members and students of Claysburg-Kimmel thank Krispy Kreme and FBLA for sponsoring this wonderful experience.
Prizes
The winner will receive a Krispy Kreme Cruiser Sweet Stop. The Cruiser will visit your school in the 2015–16 membership year and distribute doughnuts. If there is a Krispy Kreme store in your area, the Cruiser will provide fresh-baked doughnuts. If there is not a store nearby, it will distribute pre-packaged doughnuts.

14 Tomorrow’s Business Leader
In 2002, Elise and Todd Jackson were overjoyed to be expecting their first child, and weren’t expecting any complications with the birth of their son, Elijah. Elijah was born 15 weeks early weighing just over a pound and was 11 inches long—the length of a sheet of paper.
Initially only given a 10 percent chance of survival, Elijah spent seven months in a newborn intensive care unit (NICU). He underwent several delicate surgeries in the early weeks of life, and has been through years of physical, speech and occupational therapy for the long-lasting health consequences of his early birth.
Like Elijah, about 450,000 babies are born too soon in the United States each year. Every minute a baby is born too soon.
FBLA-PBL and the March of Dimes have been working together for more than 40 years to help give every baby a healthy start. FBLA-PBL members like you have raised more than $15 million to support the March of Dimes and its mission of healthier babies. By raising awareness and funds, you are helping the March of Dimes, the Jackson family, and families just like them. Together, we will reach a day when no baby is born too soon and no family has to experience the serious effects of preterm birth. To learn more about what you and your chapter can do visit marchforbabies.org/students.

KANSASSt. Mary’s Colgan (SMC) FBLA hosted a “Business Lunch and Learn” with Eagle Beverage Corporation President and General Manager Steve Beykirch who spoke about becoming an entrepreneur and managing a business. He discussed how important it is for a business to keep accurate records of inventory, especially with merchandise that may expire. Mr. Beykirch brought figures from his business showing students how they keep track of sales, inventory, distribution, and how to project sales. After the presentation, Mr. Beykirch answered student questions and joined members for lunch. SMC hosts two Business “Lunch and Learn” sessions each school year.
ILLINOIS
Warren Township FBLA partnered with local charity organization The Book Bridge
which collects books and distributes them to children and teens in difficult financial
situations. The chapter planned a “Chapters for Children” book drive and created social
media pages to increase awareness. Members decorated collection boxes and left them
in English classes at the school, and in many public areas. By the end of the drive, the
number of books received far exceeded what was expected, with more than 3,900
usable books donated. After the drive, members continued to volunteer at The Book
Bridge and plan to help with more events for this organization.
