PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEWelcome to the 2018 Saskatchewan Polytechnic Convocation Ceremony.It is my pleasure and honour to welcome you to today’s convocation ceremony. I want to commend you for your perseverance and dedication which made today possible, and to say a special thank you to all those who supported you along the way.

Since our earliest days as an institution, Sask Polytech has been student-focused. We are committed to preparing graduates with the skills necessary to contribute positively to our province and to our country.

We are characterized by an adventurous spirit, openness and willingness to embrace bold initiatives. Our educational programs, applied research and employer relationships which we have established, coupled with incredibly talented faculty and staff, set us apart from other post-secondary institutions in Saskatchewan.

I wish you every success as you embark on the next stage of your journey, and I hope you will maintain your connections with our Alumni Office. I encourage you to register as an alumnus, and make your relationship with us lifelong.

PROVOST’S MESSAGEWelcome to today’s convocation ceremonies, and congratulations to each and every one of you!

This is a day of celebration, not only for you but also for all faculty and staff at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. We celebrate because we are proud that you have reached this most important milestone. The hard work, patience and perseverance you demonstrated to achieve your goal will bring untold benefits, both in your future careers as well as in the community you will serve.

You have overcome many hurdles to get here today. Along the way, you have gained vital skills and knowledge that will prepare you to move forward through life. Your time spent studying at Saskatchewan Polytechnic will prove to be invaluable as you embark on the next stage of your career journey.

I would like to leave you with a quote by Lao Tzu: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

Today celebrates both the completion of a significant chapter in your life, and the beginning of another. Your story will be one of adventure and lifelong learning, experiences that will serve you well in all endeavours you undertake.

Though your classes may now be successfully concluded, we hope Sask Polytech will continue to be a relevant part of your life story for many years to come. We see our relationship not at a close, but just beginning. HONORARY DIPLOMA RECIPIENT Mr. Paul Charette has more than 50 years of experience in construction and engineering, and has served as the Chair of the Board of Bird Construction Inc. since 2001. Paul graduated with a diploma in Civil Technology from Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in June 1967.

Upon graduation, Mr. Charette joined Crippen Acres Engineering as an Engineering Technologist. In 1976, he joined Bird Construction Inc. as a Project Coordinator, and progressed to President and Chief Operating Officer in 1988. He was named Chief Executive Officer in 1991, and Chair of the Board in 2001, leading the company through a period of substantial growth. He was also responsible for the transfer of ownership from the Bird family to the senior management of the company. In September 2008, Mr. Charette retired from his position as CEO of Bird Construction Inc. and continues in his role as a director and Chair of the Board.

In addition to the Bird Construction Inc. Board of Directors, Mr. Charette has served on many other boards during his career, including the Ontario General Contractor’s Association, Toronto Construction Association Advisory Committee, and the Canadian Construction Association, to name a few.

During his time with Bird Construction Mr. Charette has been bestowed with many awards of honour from various colleges and polytechnics across Canada, due to his continuous devotion to post-secondary education in Canada.

ACADEMIC DRESSAlong with the academic tradition of black gowns, Saskatchewan Polytechnic grads wear v-stoles in the colour selected for each school. Other members of the platform procession wear the gown and v-stole, hood, or in some instances, a hat or mortarboard representing a credential they have received or the Saskatchewan Polytechnic v-stole that represents the school in which they teach.

APPLIED RESEARCH AWARD FOR EXCELLENCEWorking with industry and the community in applied research and innovation, Saskatchewan Polytechnic owes its success to the individual and collective efforts of its faculty and researchers. FACULTY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE: TEACHINGAs a recognized leader in the development and delivery of skills and technical training, Saskatchewan Polytechnic owes its success to the individual and collective efforts of its faculty and staff. Our faculty award program recognizes excellence in service and innovation as a significant component to making our institution a key contributor to Saskatchewan's economic and social development. The Faculty Awards for Excellence: Teaching are intended to recognize, acknowledge, and reward Sask Polytech faculty for outstanding teaching. Up to five awards for recognition of excellence in teaching are presented each year.

GOVERNOR GENERAL'S ACADEMIC MEDALThe Governor General's Academic Medal is presented to students who have graduated with the highest academic average from their institutions. Award recipients are selected based on academic achievement that meets a minimum grade average of 80 percent. Students who meet this requirement are nominated by their instructor or program head.

GOVERNOR GENERAL'S ACADEMIC COLLEGIATE BRONZE MEDALThe Governor General's Academic Collegiate Bronze Medal is presented to students who have graduated with the highest post-secondary academic average at their respective campuses. Award recipients are selected based on academic achievement that meets a minimum grade average of 80 percent.  Students who meet this requirement are nominated by their instructor or program head.

HONORARY DIPLOMASince the first honorary diploma was awarded in 2004, Sask Polytech has been recognizing extraordinary individuals who are making a difference in communities throughout Saskatchewan. Honorary diplomas are presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to education, or business and industry, and who are supportive of Sask Polytech’s vision, values, and overall role in the local and provincial communities.

STUDENT OUTSTANDING CITIZENSHIP AWARD A Student Outstanding Citizenship Award is presented each year to one Saskatchewan Polytechnic student at each campus. This award recognizes a student who has inspired and encouraged others to make positive changes. Nominated by Sask Polytech faculty, the student’s outstanding work demonstrates benefits to the campus community and others.

STUDENT INNOVATION AWARDA Student Innovation Award is presented each year to a Saskatchewan Polytechnic student or team. This award recognizes a student, or team of students, who has/have achieved a high standard of excellence on an innovative project or demonstrated innovative methods within their program of study.
