Star Struck is a performing arts extravaganza presented by the Hunter region of the NSW Department of Education and features thousands of students from all over the region. Our students performed in five different songs. Drama Groups 1 & 2 performed as Australians in the Gold Rush for ‘Roaring Days’ and dressed up as comedy icons Marcel Marceau and Lucille Ball for ‘I Wanna Make the World Laugh’, a tribute to many comedians from over the years. Dance Group 1 danced to ‘September’, looking retro 1980s in their tutus and leg warmers. The vitality of Dance Groups 1 & 2 shone in ‘Eye of of the Tiger’, a cheeky tribute to the Rocky films in their costumes and boxing-style dance moves During the final performance, Michele Gosper, the Drama director for Star Struck, approached the Tomaree tent to thank our students for their amazing work in the show, especially the professionalism of our Drama students in researching and acting out such great comedy characters. Huge thanks go to everyone involved in getting our students to this enormous event, especially the energetic students, their patient parents and dedicated teachers. Star Struck is a terrific opportunity for our students to experience a professional performance space, run by professionals in the industry. It expands their creativity and bank of performance ideas as well as providing a mentoring platform for older students to help younger ones. Madison Bennett One such mentor this year was Madison Bennett who was nominated as the Drama representative on the Star Struck Student Direction Team. “Being a part of the student direction team was such an amazing experience. The team had five kids from Years 11-12 , two music students, three dance students and one drama (me). Together, we got to co-create and then choreograph a whole segment of the show. I got to learn about a completely different side of Star Struck and truly understand just the amount of hard work that goes into the whole show. I enjoyed it immensely.”

From the Principal’s Desk It is hard to believe we are already half way through the year. It seems that Christmas decorations will be up in stores before we know it! We have started this term in a positive manner- firstly with MMADD (Multimedia, Music, Art, Drama, Dance) night which was a wonderful night displaying our fabulous students. Next came the Education Week award night. On this night, students, community members and staff were recognised for their contributions to public education throughout the Tomaree Learning Community, The award recipients for THS were: Student Achievement- Jason Allwood, Duoen Kim, Chloe Newman & Madison Bennett Excellence in Teaching- Renee Lyon, Karen Shaw, Stacy Hinks Outstanding Contribution by a School Community Member- All Saints Anglican Church, Kay Berkley Outstanding Contribution by a non-teaching member of staff- Val Eder, Jen Shanahan, Terri Uzzell School Achievement- Aboriginal Education Team School Plan 2018-2020 We are currently evaluating our existing school plan and setting our sights to the next three years. The P&C is the main venue for gathering community input into the direction the school should be moving over the next three years. If you are unable to attend P&C meetings and would like to have input, look out for notices in SkoolBag and Facebook requesting feedback. Year 12 Once again a busy term ahead especially for Year 12 students. Many have major works due in Society & Culture, Multimedia, Timber Technology, Design & Technology, Visual Art and Textiles & Design. I wish those students all the best in their presentations. Trial exams are also on in Week 5 & 6 this term but the work is by no means over after that. Year 12 will still have 4 weeks of classes to ensure they have completed all course work and develop a study regime with their teachers. It is important that all Year 12 students attend all lessons until the end of term. A letter will be issued in the coming weeks for Year 12 to advise them of the arrangements for events like their final Formal Assembly which is set for Wednesday 20th September and parents and friends are invited to attend. Timing will be on the letter coming home and keep an eye on Facebook, Skoolbag and the website for more information relating to Year 12 finals days, HSC exam information and formal information. Uniform It seems that I am often making comment on uniform but I think it is important that students are supported and encouraged from home to wear their uniform. Winter always seems to be the poorest season for uniform compliance as hoodies and coloured jackets become more noticeable. Students who wear hoodies may be asked to remove the jumper and will be provided with a clean jumper to wear for

the day. All loaned jumpers are washed each time they are worn and returned. A reminder that shoes should be predominantly black- this includes the laces. White laces in black shoes detract from the smartness of the uniform. Anyone experiencing difficulty in purchasing the uniform from Lowes is encouraged to contact the school and speak with a Deputy or Head Teacher Wellbeing for confidential support. Playground improvements We have recently had a large area that was dirt, concreted to create more seating areas. We are waiting on the installation of some new bubblers. These will be brightly coloured and include a bottle filler tap and unlike the current system are not troughs so they should be easier to keep clean A Grounds Committee is looking at what else we can do to brighten the playground and provide other activities for students. Toilets I am disappointed that we still have a very small minority of the school who think it is OK to vandalise the toilets by throwing paper around, breaking locks and generally acting inappropriately. This behaviour is affecting the rest of the school, as I have had no choice but to close all but one set of toilets during class time in an effort to curb the problems. All the toilets are open during break time except for the senior toilets which are in an unsupervised area. I am at a loss to know why some students may act in this way and am asking for student assistance to notify as soon as they see any damage so it can be repaired promptly. I am in the process of purchasing new fittings for the toilets, including new soap dispensers, toilet roll holders and hand towel dispensers. It is a basic right to be able to go to the bathroom and be able to wash and dry your hands. If students can look after these new fittings, I would like to look further into hand dryers as well to reduce paper usage. The school can continue to replace items but this of course has a flow on effect by making less money available for other things students need. I feel at this point we need a student led turn around to stop the mindless vandalism. Millennium Millennium is the name of the student management system we use. I am working to make parts of this available to parents. Hopefully in the next fortnight those who have an email address registered with us will receive an email with details about how to log on to the Millennium Parent Portal. A notice will go out on SkoolBag and Facebook when it is ready to go. Through the Parent Portal you will be able to see your children’s class teachers, student timetables, reports and attendance records. We would like to trial ‘paperless’ reports for the end of the year and reports will be released first on the portal and only printed for those who request it. More information on that to come later in the year.

TOMAREE HIGH P&C NEWS Gonski Since the passing of the Gonski 2.0 Legislation little has been revealed as yet on the impact it will have on individual schools. In a press release following the Gonski backflip the Federal Australian Education Union stated that what was passed by the Senate was very different to what the Federal Government had originally proposed. Key things to know about the accepted proposal: State and Territory Gonski agreements will not be honoured. Public and private school funding will be set at a fixed rate. State and Territory governments will have to increase their funding. Schools will remain woefully underfunded for students with disability. In N.S.W. where members of electorates are members of the Federal Government, public schools will collectively lose over $372 million in funding in 2018 and 2019 due to the amendment. For further detail visitwww.igiveagonski.com.au From our June Meeting Following an informal discussion on the ranking process for Y11 & 12 students it was agreed an information session for parents was a necessity. Hopefully a date will be set for the meeting in the not too distant future. Uniform Stock at Lowes Ms Xenos has been advised that now they are aware of the stock needed on hand for our school and with the appointment of a new State manager, stock shortage should no longer be an issue. Review of P&C Presentation Assembly Awards To be held over until our August meeting. It will be decided whether or not we increase the dollar value for each of our awards and introduce additional awards. Pool Car Park Traffic Issues Concern was expressed about the dangerous manner in which some students are driving their vehicles when leaving the car park of an afternoon. If your son or daughter drive please mention to them the importance of safety whilst behind the wheel of a vehicle. Second Hand Uniforms Where do I leave them? The Salvation Army and St Vinnies are outlets for them along with the pool held by the school admin. Entertainment Book Fundraiser To date we have made 30 sales. There will be a special draw for an app or book before Father’s Day. Anyone who has made a purchase from us this year can win the book or app that could be a Father’s Day gift. The draw will take place on August 30TH. Combined Gathering of the Primary and High School P&Cs This special event will take place on Wednesday August 23rd at 6:15 in the staff common room. Member for the State Electorate of Port Stephens KATE WASHINGTON (pictured right) will be the guest speaker. There will be a special session on the agenda where questions and comments will be taken from the audience. Our next meeting August 30th at 6:15 p.m. in the staff common room.

Year 11 Year 11 students have had a great start back to Term 3. This is the last term of their Preliminary course before they start the HSC course next term. This term is a busy term for Year 11 and they should have already started preparing for their final exams which are in Week 9. Organisation has started for the Year 12 jerseys. The jerseys are $80 and the office will be taking payment until Week 6 for any Year 11 student who wishes to purchase one. Year 11 has been involved in some wonderful things already this term. We have had Year 11 students represent the school at high levels in Soccer, Rugby, Cross Country and Touch football. A special mention to Taylah Smith, who travelled to Ireland to compete in Oz Tag and Tristan Esquilant, who is currently in China playing soccer for the Jets. These students have done extremely well.

Chloe Newman, Jason Allwood (pictured below left) & Madison Bennett of Year 11 (pictured below right) received awards at the Education Week awards night. Chloe Newman received her award for being a dedicated and hardworking student who consistently upholds our expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Success.

Jason Allwood was awarded for: Outstanding commitment to the sport of Rugby Union through captaincy of Hunter CHS side; selection in NSW U16 team; selection in the development squad to travel to South Africa and selection in the NSW CHS Open Team in 2017.

Madison Bennett received her award for outstanding leadership in Star Struck through being a student director for Drama and mentoring of other students.

What a fantastic effort from both these students and they should be very proud of themselves.

BIG PICTURE PROGRAM

As part of their outlearning for the Big Picture Program, teacher Patrick Britton took two Big Picture students, Nate Harris and Isaak Malsem to Mayfield to meet members of the Knights. Nate completed a project on Rugby League this term (Isaak last term) and today they were able to sit in on a training session and meet the players afterwards. Nate sent through a series of interview questions and was able to sit down with Jamie Buhrer and Brendan Elliot and interview them personally. Many thanks to Real Futures program co-ordinator, Steve Jennings, for contacting the team and to Mr Britton for taking the boys. Nate will be writing up his interview and we will post photos of his work on Facebook when completed.

Wellbeing

As we head into Term 3 it is an important time to focus on our Year 12 students and the final stage of their schooling life. For many this will involve final exams for the HSC. Last week our Student Support Officer, Cal Baillie, presented an evening session on ‘Surviving the HSC’ for parents and students. Some of the content that Cal was able to focus on included managing stress. Below is part of an article that has been put together by Youth Beyond Blue. Look after yourself Your brain and body are closely connected – looking after your body has great benefits for your mind. Activities like sport, dance, walking or yoga can increase your performance by increasing oxygen to your brain. It’s also great at reducing tension from stress and school pressure.

Some stress can be useful in keeping us motivated – without it we would find it hard to stay awake! However, during Year 12, and especially during exam time, you may find your stress levels rising high into the ‘critical zone’, causing a dramatic decline in performance. Proven strategies for beating stress include:

Relaxation: smartphone apps like Smiling Mind can help

Time management: try making a list of activities and prioritise

Connecting with others: talk about your worries, laugh, be positive!

Remember to be kind to yourself: take some time out to do the things you enjoy or help you maintain your wellbeing

If you have any wellbeing concerns please come and see any of the wellbeing staff upstairs in H Block, or call the school on 49 811444 Benji Trieger H.T. Wellbeing/Learning & Support

Year 8 Shark & Ray Centre Excursion

On Wednesday, 26th July, 50 Visual Arts students from Year 8 attended an amazing excursion to Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters. Here students got to spend time in the water with many beautiful rays, stingrays and sharks. Students petted, fed and even got cuddles from these incredible marine animals whilst learning about important conservation issues and ways to help save our sea life from becoming extinct. Afterwards, students spent time drawing the animals, paying attention to the texture of their skin and the movement of the water, tying in with their study of the representation of water and the ocean in art. Our students behaved in a mature, responsible and respectful manner and should be commended on their excellent discussions and keenness to participate. What a wonderful excursion for all involved! Thank you to Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters for having us, we can't wait to come back! Tamara Turner

The Many Faces of Mr Stuart - Through the eyes of Year 7 Visual Arts

During Term 3, Year 7 students explored the art making practice of American photo-realist painter Chuck Close. Close is famous for painting large-scale portraits, and is an important artist for our students to study. His resilience and perseverance in overcoming obstacles in his life have made for engaging and relevant discussions during lessons. Students have explored the conventions and techniques of portraiture, while developing new skills and an appreciation of proportion, scale, pattern and colour. To mimic the artists’ practice, Year 7 students were given the task of capturing in detail, the face of their Year Advisor, Mr Gary Stuart. Referencing Close’s grid style, 12 Visual Arts classes worked with enthusiasm to produce almost 200 geometric, vibrant and unique portraits, honouring and revealing the many intriguing faces of Mr Stuart. Year 7 Visual Arts say ‘thank you’ to their Year Advisor for his ongoing dedication and support of his students throughout the year. Sarah Seager and Tamara Turner Visual Arts Teachers

AUSTRALIAN GEOGRAPHY COMPETITION 2017 Geography students in Year 11 recently tested their geographical skills and knowledge against students from all around the country in the 2017 Australian Geography Competition. Over 70,000 students from 743 schools entered the competition in the junior, intermediate and senior categories. Students in the senior category were expected to answer 35 multiple choice questions in 35 minutes testing their geographic skills by using a range of maps, graphs and statistics. Students’ general knowledge was also tested on topics as diverse as water management and the Ebola crisis. The competition is a joint initiative of the Australian Geography Teachers’ Association and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland and in NSW is sponsored by Macquarie University. Students will receive their certificates at the next formal assembly. Results included two high distinctions, two distinctions, three credits and thirteen participation: Dan Vu and Mitchell Coggan received high distinctions. Maegan Johnston and Isaac Haynes received distinctions. Gabrielle Thoroughgood, Millie Rigby, Bradley Fletcher and Corey Warrington received credits. Taleisha Baldwin-Rymer, Chloe Staveley, Ruby Wright, Kristen McIlwraith, Taylor Bennett, Georgia Robinson,

Lara Dynes, Mary Pineda, Brodie Walker, Simran Garbujapun, Kean Thomas, Oscar Reeder and Byron Mitchell received participation.

Well done everyone. Craig Windon Relieving Head Teacher HSIE

Year 12 Geography Sydney Excursion

Students from Year 12 Geography completed their mandatory fieldwork component of the course in Sydney last week. Students investigated a range of Urban Dynamics in Sydney with a specific focus on the inner city suburb of Pyrmont. Pyrmont was once the industrial and port heartland of Sydney however during the 1970s became vacant and disused. The NSW Government in the 1980s undertook a major urban renewal project of Darling Harbour, Ultimo and Pyrmont to rejuvenate the area. Presently the site of Barangaroo is being renewed in order to provide a range of multiple land uses from commercial, residential to open-space. In Pyrmont, students investigated the urban planning principles of urban infill, adaptive re-use of heritage buildings, provision of open-space and access to the harbour, gentrification and the creation of a sustainable community focus urban village. The fieldwork was conducted through the Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre where students accessed a range of primary and secondary research techniques. Mrs L Hawke – HSIE Teacher

Year 11 Construction Throughout term 2 construction students were exposed to a number of new sections in their course. Students were able to experience what life is like on a real construction site as they completed their mandatory 35 hour work placement with our host employers. Students were engaged in various construction activities including carpentry & Joinery, concreting, tiling, pool building, excavation, fix outs, internal plastering, painting, electrical, site preparation, landscaping and plumbing. The students all reported that they had a great week on placement and that they could clearly see how their construction course links to real world building tasks. While back at school, the boys have been completing several different jobs such as, a timber oil stone box, a framing joint task and the construction of a mobile saw bench for a compound slide saw. All tasks form part of their Certificate II in Construction VET course and link directly to achievable competencies within the construction framework.

Corey Goodwin (above) with his completed Oil Stone Box.

Year 11 Construction built this mobile compound slide saw bench (pictured below) which also houses its own vacuum system for dust minimisation. The bench is on four castors two of which have brakes which can be ap-plied when the bench is being used on site.

Year 11 Design & Technology

The D&T class has just completed its second design task which was to create a shelf or desk mounted clock that represented some aspect of their personality. The students were given free range with their design skills as the design brief only required students to adhere to a few small rules, otherwise the design was theirs to make. As a result, students produced a variety of outstanding practical projects with a written design folio. All projects were completed on time and to a sound standard. Well done Year 11 D&T.
