We hope everyone had a fun filled Spring Break! This month we are discussing reduce, reuse, recycle, and community helpers. Concepts that will be addressed include: the difference of trash and recycling, items that can be recycled, where our trash/recyclables are taken, and keeping the environment clean. We will also be discussing the role that different community helpers play in society and how they keep us safe. Skills that will be assessed and practiced include: alliteration, rhyming, print concepts, classifying objects, letter recognition, and gross motor. Please send in recyclables that include: paper (newspapers and magazines), plastic, and aluminum.

Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope the time off has left everyone well rested and eager to finish out the year strong. Our focus this month is to continue learning new words and put into practice our reading strategies to become the best readers we can be. These strategies include: Looking at the picture clues in the story. S-T-R-E-T-C-H the words out slowly by putting the sounds together. Get your mouth ready for the first letter or part of unknown words. Find little words inside the big word. Skip over the word to read the rest of the sentence then, hop back and try the word again. In math, continue practicing simple addition and subtraction problems using counters for help with making number stories. We will also be learning about three-dimensional shapes and measurement. In Science, we will be discussing the weather/climate and living/non-living things. We will finish the year with writing informational pieces. We will be looking at nonfiction material and writing about the facts we learned. Thanks to all parents who helped with the Spring parties. Thanks parents for working with your children at home. Don’t forget, you may use Raz-Kids to help support reading at home. Go to the Morgan media page and click on Raz-Kids.

Believe it or not, we are in April! We hope everyone had a nice and relaxing Spring Break. First graders are doing a great job with learning this month. We are working hard on reviewing things from earlier in the year, as well as learning new things. We are so excited to continue to grow in reading, writing, and math skills.Reading: We are focusing on different kinds of stories and finding the main idea in those. We are trying to find out the author’s message, as well as thinking about the problem and solution in stories. We are working on many grammar skills like nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We are learning about types of words like compound words, contraction words, and syllables in words.Math: We are reviewing how facts are related. We are learning about the addition and subtraction facts that go together like 3+2=5, 2+3=5, 5-3=2, 5-2=3. Writing: We are working on writing our opinion about topics and persuading others to agree with us! This is a really fun writing unit.We look forward to continue to learn and grow for the rest of the school year!

While we are not sure how the time has gone so quickly, we are here and we are ready for the things that April will bring our way. We have the state reading assessment (AIR) on April 17th and April 19th. Please be sure your child is well rested and well fed on these mornings. It is important that they arrive to school on time.

We have several other important dates that you need to note on your family calendar. On May 1st and May 3rd we will be taking the state math assessment (AIR) and on May 14th we will be traveling to Cincinnati Financial to visit with our pen pals one last time.

Third graders will finish the year with some interesting math study which includes area and perimeter explorations, as well as geometry concepts. In writing we will be using our creative juices to write fairy tale adaptations. The students love this writing unit and it shows! In science we will be studying heredity and animal adaptations, which is perfect this time of year as we see new life in the spring!

Happy Spring!! We have a very busy April ahead of us. We continue to prepare for our State testing in English/ Language Arts and Math. Please help kids remember to keep practicing their Reading skills and Math skills at home too. Parents can help their son or daughter do their best by making sure they get plenty of rest the nights before the test and eat a good breakfast on the morning of each test. The boys and girls do a much better job on the tests if they take the tests with their classmates, so please make every effort to have them here at school each morning on time. Your support really helps your child. We are all proud of our fourth graders who have worked very hard, and we know they will continue to do their best. Our ELA tests will be on April 18th and 20th! In Social Studies, the students are learning about our State and National Governments. We all have rights and responsibilities when it comes to being good citizens and we are discussing how we can be our best to make our community wonderful. We will soon be progressing into our study of economics as we head into the end of the school year. We are looking forward to an exciting field trip that will take us to Wright Patterson Air Force Base. We will be touring the museum and getting to visit the Omnimax Theater! The writing piece we have been focusing on this quarter is literary essay. We will be reading literature and responding to it by focusing on character traits, what the author is inferring, and the mood or tone of different pieces of literature.

In Math we have been adding, subtracting, multiplying, comparing, and making equivalent fractions. There seems to be no end to the amazing skills of these 4th grade mathletes! As we near the AIR test for math, we will be taking a short break to review concepts and prepare for the tests which will be April 30th and May 2nd. We will be heading into geometry after the tests and finishing the year with some measurement.

In Science, we are spending some time looking at microscopes and then we will be learning about the law of the conservation of mass. We will test out different physical and chemical changes to determine that the mass before and after stays the same. Later this month, we will begin our study on electricity!

It’s hard to believe that April is already here! Our groups continue to make great strides! Reading at home continues to be a crucial element in order for students to become awesome readers. Thank you for taking the time to read with your child each night! Summer is coming and reading with your child is especially important so they maintain all their reading skills. We are having a Family Literacy night to share some ideas with you about how you can make summer reading fun and productive. Please join us at here at Morgan on May 9 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. There will be reading games and activities as well as a free book and a treat.

In Kindergarten, we are practicing to read and write words with short vowels and silent e long vowel words as well as words with digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh). We continue to work hard to learn our sight words so we can read quickly and smoothly through more difficult books. For comprehension, ask questions after reading such as what was the setting, who are the characters and was there a problem/solution in the story. Thank you, parents, for continuing to work on sight words at home and listening to your child read every night!

First grade students are continuing to review hunks and chunks, blending sounds, and applying those skills to reading and writing. Along with these skills, we are also using our reading strategies that students have learned in the classroom (i.e., Flippy Dolphin, Stretchy Snake, Chunky Monkey, and several more). We are reviewing the setting of the story, characters, retelling, and genre. Comprehension is also an important element as we work on fluency. We continue to write words and sentences using hunks and chunks, short and long vowels, blending, and sight words. We are working on using capital letters at the beginning of each sentence, space between the words, and punctuation at the end of each sentence. Keep up the great work, first grade!

In second grade, we are focusing on vocabulary. We are not only learning the meaning of the words we read, but also how to use them properly. We are putting our notebooks to good use as we write thoughtful sentences using our new words. Parents can help by using unfamiliar words as they speak and encouraging students to use them when they write. When a student stumbles upon a word they don’t understand, encourage them to use context clues to find the meaning. After they have grasped it, see if they can make a sentence using the word. Since comprehension is integral for all readers, we are also focusing on comprehension for our second graders who are on their way to third grade! We are not only reading the text fluently, but making personal connections and inferences. Way to go second grade!

Third grade students are reading lots of nonfiction and chapter books. We are reviewing text features. When reading nonfiction at home, have your student point out the headings, captions, labels, diagrams, key words, table of contents, index, glossary, maps, and illustrations. We are also working on word parts, prefix and suffix, in particular, which change the meaning of the word. Students have been practicing writing base words on their whiteboards and then adding beginnings and endings to their words. Keep practicing those reading comprehension questions that came home in packets from conferences. Students benefit so much when a parent will review what they’ve read with them! Practice makes perfect! Great job third grade!

Fourth grade students are delving into books that require some deeper level thinking. Students are looking for the author’s purpose. Why did the author write this? Were they trying to persuade, entertain, explain, or describe something?. As we read nonfiction stories, we are looking to see if description, problem and solution, order and sequence, cause and effect, or compare and contrast are used by the author. As students begin to read more challenging books, vocabulary gets trickier. We are learning to use context clues to figure out the meaning of a word. Sometimes we find out that a word has multiple meanings. How is it used in this story? How can we put it into a sentence? We too are putting our writing skills to work. We are also trying to make good connections through writing. Students will read about a topic and then try to relate that back to something they’ve experienced. We like to write about this in our journals. Awesome job fourth grade!

It’s no secret, the success of our students relies heavily on the teachers who dedicate their time to teach and guide them to their academic achievements. During the first week of May, Morgan Elementary will celebrate “our” teachers in different ways to show our appreciation for their time and dedication. A flyer will be sent home in the coming weeks specifying how your child can get involved in recognizing their teacher for the great job they do. Please, help them take a minute to say “thank you!”

PTO OFFICER OPEN HOUSE2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR

Thursday, APRIL 26th

5:30 – 7:00 pmThe Morgan Elementary PTO is currently looking for parents who are interested in

helping with and/or being are a part of our organization for the upcoming school year.

We will have an open house to answer questions and discuss current positions that

need to be filled for next year on the evening of April 26th.

Not all the positions we have require a significant amount of time (i.e. carnival,

COSI, ice cream social, movie night), but they do allow you, as a parent, to get more involved with other parents and the staff at

Morgan. If you cannot make the open house and have questions, don’t hesitate to

contact the PTO at [email protected]

In the coming weeks, PTO will be sending home a flyer with information about purchasing a back-to-school kit for your child for the upcoming 2018-19 school year. Your child’s school supplies are packaged in individual “kits,” with products that exactly match the school supplies requested from the teachers at Morgan Elementary. The cost of each kit is dependent on grade level and the supplies requested by the teachers in their specific grade level. Orders are then available to be picked up at the Fall School Open House. The purpose is to help eliminate the “back to school” shopping that some of us do not want to do or do not have time to do.

FIELD DAY: MAY 24TH

Just a reminder to have all field day shirt orders turned in to the office no later than April 20th!
