Bartec USA is a market leading manufacturer of industrial tools for the automotive sector.

The TPMS Programming Accessory Device [PAD] is designed to programme a replacement tyre pressure sensor so that it can be configured to emulate and replace broken electronic sensors on any car.

The resulting product utilises injection moulded ABS, automotive design features and an intricate surface wave texture that imitates an ultrasonic wave pattern, helping identify where to locate EZ sensors for perfect operation.

This wave pattern detail also embodies Bartec USA’s RFID technology within the product, giving it a truly unique brand identity.

Aid Call are a leading company in custom wireless communication and alert systems for hospitals, care homes, hospices, trusts and individual homes.

The Touchsafe® Pro system is the latest and most versatile solution on the market. It utilises a variety of call points which all communicate with one or multiple touch-screen display panels. These convey a mass of important information at a glance including patient name, nurse name, the exact call location and the response time.

I was responsible for the design development of this range from concept through to the initial prototyping stages.

The battery powered call point devices provide a means for wireless two-way communicate with the system from multiple locations. The call points were designed to be easily modified to a number of configurations, depending on their intended use, including integrated emergency or cardiac pull-stops, standard emergency call push-button and can be with or without an LCD screen.

All elements of the Touchsafe® Wireless Nurse Call range, which need to be touched or handled, are embedded with powerful antimicrobial additives to help combat the spread of infection.

Chubb Systems specialises in the design, supply, installation and support of complex electronic security and safety systems.

Chubb Systems wanted to develop a new emergency pull cord enclosure for use in healthcare environments.

The resulting product was fully tamper proof and consisted of a white ABS base and a translucent Polypropylene lens to ensure the alarm LED was visible when activated.

The system was intended primarily for use within care homes to provide a clear alarm to nurses or carers if a patient was in difficulty. The alarm is activated manually via the suspended pull-cord.

The 3 part-design features a twist-on tamper proof translucent lens which is fixed in place using a single screw. This bayonet fixing feature has been optimised for injection moulding by avoiding any expensive undercuts.

SAPA is the world’s leading manufacturer of aluminium solutions and employ over 23,000 people throughout 40 countries. In 2011, SAPA held a competition to see how Extruded Aluminium could be implemented to improve existing products on the market.

This was the winning entry in the 2011 competition.

This family of products utilises extrusion as an efficiently resourceful and sustainable method of manufacturing the flashlight chassis’, minimising cost whilst maintaining versatility.

Extensive market research indicated that the existing processes implemented in the manufacture of aluminium flashlights are extremely wasteful.

The use of extrusion as the production process for these flashlights dramatically reduces waste material and minimises the manufacturing lead times.

The Velopac is a separable bicycle which can be easily dismantled and carried in a backpack. The relevant anthropometric considerations have been used in the design of the backpack and the bicycle itself.

The products unique features allow users to carry the bicycle within the backpack, freeing the use of their hands, optimising convenience and minimising the chance of theft. It also complies with the legislative restrictions of the UK rail industry.

The safety features of the bicycle conform to the standards set out in BS 6102.

The Velopac was nominated to be exhibited at the 2011 New Designers Exhibition at the Design Centre in Islington, London and is currently protected under five Registered Designs.

The Aluminium Association (ALFED) is the Trade Association which represent the interests of the UK Aluminium industry. ‘The Power of Aluminium’ is an award organised by ALFED to promote the innovative use of Extruded Aluminium in contemporary design.

This was the winning entry in the 2011-2012 competition.

The final product consisted of a contemporary, easy-to-assemble set of shelves which could be customised to fulfil the consumer’s individual functional and aesthetic needs.

Using extruded aluminium as the core material for modular shelving would provide the system with tangible mechanical and environmental benefits not found within existing products.

The brief was to design a suitcase to act as the flagship for a range of executive luggage products made from high-end materials, providing an opulent solution for carrying personal possessions in transit.

The resulting suitcase consists of a monocoque carbon fibre body embedded with Italian Foglizzo leather trim details. The internal partitions and patented telescopic arm are also made from carbon fibre. The arm handle and wheels are machined from aviation grade titanium.

The client wanted to ensure that all aspects of the case were bespoke to uphold the sense of absolute quality. For this reason the planetary wheels used on the case were designed and engineered from scratch, utilising a revolutionary system allowing them to overhang the rear face of the case without needing the full circumference of the internal hub to be secured. This feature helped to protect the case when rolling it up stairs or street curbs.

To date, 500 units of this limited edition case have been manufactured.

Twickenham Studios have been producing films since 1912 and, to date, are the only film and television studio which caters for both media production and post-production.

As part of the studio’s refurbishment, all of the sound recording suites are installing bespoke equipment and facilities to ensure they are truly competitive with other companies.

FFD were asked to design and manufacture a desk which could be retrofitted with the Neve PS-1 mixing console and interchangeable 3U rack-mount units.

The desk incorporates oak laminated CNC MDF work-top, soft-nose cushioning, and thermo-formed Hi-Macs edging. The leg framework is located and secured first before assembling the MDF carcass to fit. The cable management runs down the legs of the desk.

The centerpiece of the Bloomberg departure lounge in London City Airport is a 7.5 meter freestanding videowall, one of the largest in Europe.

I was presented with a basic client concept of the videowall and asked to develop it through to manufacture. I lead the project through detail design, manufacture and installation at City Airport.

HOLO™ has been created for product point of sale, promotional events, marketing suites, lobby areas and virtual training.

Existing 2D content can be quickly transformed into a three dimensional hologram. HOLO™ is the only hologram product on the market with advanced integrated gesture control.

The minimalist design focuses the audience’s attention on the holographic image suspended in the diamond. Each product bespoke, utilising client specific content.

The initial concept for the product was conceived by Conran & Partners (see image below). This concept was then developed, fully engineered and manufactured at FFD before the product was launched in Sir Terrance Conran’s apartment in October 2013.

The second iteration of the HOLO™ includes a backlit LED illuminated logo and cast polymer quick-assembly glass structure.

The Shell Eco-Marathon is an annual event in which universities compete to create the most economic vehicle possible. 2012 saw the introduction of ‘The Lab’, an interactive exhibition where the science of energy was explored through a variety of exhibits.

A series of exhibits demonstrating numerous sources of electrical power were manufactured for the Shell Eco Marathon, Rotterdam 2013. These included coal, wave nuclear, and electrical power generation.

For each power source, an interactive simulation exhibit was developed, intending to simultaneously entertain and teach the young public about various forms of energy.

The interactive exhibits utilise either mechanical or electromechanical systems which can be coordinated by the user either manually or using digital control respectively.

Other exhibits included lego cars which were powered utilising capacitive batteries and an Archimedes screw.

Spec Pod Tablet Assembly

Every year, Ford holds a motor show in Geneva where they exhibit their up-and-coming vehicles. Each vehicle has an informative stand alongside it, providing all of the relevant information about the vehicle on display as well as the alternative configurations available.

These interactive stands, or Pods, incorporate a Windows 8 tablet and, by law, a specification sheet providing all of the environmental information on the vehicle’s emissions, C02 footprint, and fuel economy.

The Pods, of which 25 were manufactured in-house at FFD in varying configurations, consist of sheet metal fabrication, an obround profile upstand, and machined aluminium housings.

The head of each Pod could adjust it’s pitch to accommodate each user’s reading angle. The Monroney plinth, which stored the environmental data sheet, was interchangeable between A4 and A3 paper sizes.
