Quality Assurance Throughout The Value Chain
Tolu Adesalu March 15th 2017
What is Quality Assurance?
• A program for the Systematic monitoring and evaluation of the various aspects of a project, service or facility to ensure that standards of quality are being met. - Merriam Webster Dictionary.
What is Value Chain?
• A set of activities that that a firm operating in a specific industry performs in order to deliver a valuable product or service for the market. – Wikipedia.
• High level model (developed by Michael Porter) used to describe the process by which businesses receive Raw Materials, add value to the raw materials through various processes to create a finished product and then sell that end product to customers. – Investopidia.
*The Consumer must accept that the product meets his/her expectations.
The Consumer:
• Yesterday’s Consumer: – Very loyal, not too quality conscious, not
interested in the supply chain of the brand, access to information only through traditional media.
• Today’s Consumer: – Quality conscious, enlightened, interested
in the well being of the Planet, loyal but demanding, social media savvy.
• Tomorrow’s Consumer:
–?

3 Blocks in the Value Chain:
• Raw Materials. – What is it?
– Where does it come from? Traceability.
– Receipt and storage.
• Production. – Process parameters/control.
• Sales. – Storage conditions.
– Traceability.
Raw Materials
• Specification? – Does it exists? – Is it standardized? – Can it be changed? By whom? How?
• Where is it sourced? – Can this be changed? By whom? How? – Who are the suppliers? – Are they quality checked?
• Entrance control. – Is this done?
• Deviations. – How’s this managed?

Why don’t we just test everything?
• If you test all batches, there is nothing left to send…how many batches do you test???
– If 1 batch out of 1000 batches was defective (0.1%)…
– If 60 negative batches are tested (6%)…
…There is still a 94% chance a defective batch could be released!!!
Production
• What’s the manufacturing process? • HACCP. • Process parameters.
– How are they controlled? – How are they tracked? – Who has authorization to stop the plant when things go wrong?
• Deviations. – Is it logged? – Are there documented corrective and preventive actions?
• Waste/rework. – How’s this treated? – Is it logged and tracked till disposal?

• Identifies Hazards in the Process
• Identifies Critical Points for Control and Monitoring
• Focus is on Food Safety and not Quality
• Program of Prevention rather than Inspection
• Science Based and systematic approach
• And today a Legal Requirement in many countries
And so there was a need for HACCP…
“Hazard Analysis And Critical Control Point”
Sales
• Labelling. – What does it communicate.
• Distribution network. – Distributor quality policy.
– Distributor infrastructure.
• Complaint procedure. – Does it exist? Does it work?
• Recall procedure. – Does it exist? Does it work?
Regulatory Environment
• Dedicated resources for the SME.
• Educate.
• Enforce.
• Encourage.
• Sanction.
