years of their

India's ties with South-east Asia date back more than
2,000 years. Ancient trade between India and
countries such as Cambodia, Malaysia and Thailand is
well documented. The heads of Governments of
ASEAN nations were invited as guests for Republic day
function.
Further trade ties: With an aim to further trade ties, thIndia and ASEAN on the 26 of January agreed to
target a swift conclusion to the comprehensive and
mutually beneficial Regional Comprehensive
Economic Partnership (RCEP) in 2018. Other
agreements between India-ASEAN……

commitment to enhance physical and
digital connectivity in line with the Master
Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025 and the
ASEAN ICT Masterplan (AIM) 2020 by
availing the $1-billion line of credit
announced by India.
India and ASEAN will also work towards
encouraging early completion of the
India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral
Highway Project and extend this
trilateral highway to Cambodia, Lao
PDR and Vietnam, according to the
Delhi Declaration of the ASEAN-India
Commemorative Summit.
It was agreed to establish closer ASEAN-
India air links to promote tourism, trade,
and enhance greater connectivity between
10-nation grouping ASEAN and India.
There were also agreements on
cooperation for conservation and
sustainable use of marine resources in
the Indian and Pacific Oceans
It also emphasised the need to promote
maritime transport cooperation
between ASEAN and India, and encourage potential private
sector participation in the development of seaports
According to the declaration, promotion of stable and sustainable
growth for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs),
including through technology transfer, as well as enhancing
capacity building, technical assistance
India and ASEAN countries will continue
to collaborate in peaceful exploitation of
outer space, through the implementation
of the ASEAN-India Space Cooperation
Programme, including launching of
satellites.

Unemployment rate rising: ILOIndia could witness a higher
unemployment rate of 3.5 per cent in2018, a little more than the 3.4 per centprojected earlier, the InternationalLabour Organisation (ILO) has said inits latest report. The unemploymentrate in the country will stand at 3.5per cent in 2018 and 2019 – the samelevel, the ILO’s ‘World Employment andSocial Outlook: Trends 2018’report said.
The ILO said the unemploymentrate at a global level would declinefor the first time in three years.
The number of jobless in thecountrywillincreaseto 18.6mi l l i onin 2018and 18.9mi l l i onin 2019, against 18.3million in2017.
ILO had forecast that the numberof unemployed in the country isexpected to be 18 million in 2018and had estimated the unemployment figure for 2017 at17.8 million.
The ILO has projected a dipin unemployment rate globallyfrom 5.6 per cent in 2017 to 5.5per cent in 2018 and 2019.
However, with a growing numberof people entering the labour
market to seek employment, thetotal number of unemployed isexpected to remain stable in 2018,above 192 million.
DHARMA launched: A softwareprogramme known as Dam Health andRehabilitation Monitoring Application(DHARMA) was launched to documentauthentic asset in case of Damrehabilitation and improvement project.The first International Dam SafetyConference-2018 was held in Kovalam,Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) fromJanuary 23-24, 2018. It was organizedjointly by Central Water Commission(CWC), Kerala Water ResourcesDepartment (KWRD), NationalInstitute of Technology, Calicut (NITC),and College of Engineering.US designates six individuals asglobal terrorists: The United Statesimposed sanctions on six individualswith links to the Afghan Taliban andHaqqani Network, specially stressingon their links to Pakistan, as well.The move comes weeks after the US,on January 4, suspended military aidto Pakistan and demanded “decisiveaction” against the factions of theTaliban based in the country.Meanwhile, Republican Party SenatorRand Paul introduced a legislationthat proposes reallocating the morethan $2 billion that was meant for
civilian assistance to Pakistan.

It is India’s first GarbageFestival. The festival aimed toincrease awareness, use the wastegenerated in the city creatively, andto showcase multiple techniques forreusing things that are labeled asgarbage.
Lalu Yadav Gets 5 Years In Jail InThird Fodder Scam Case: FormerBihar chief minister Lalu Yadav andhis longtime aide, Jagannath Mishrawere sentenced to five years in jail
and a Rs. 5 lakh fine each in a thirdfodder scam case. Mr Yadav is alreadyserving a jail term in the secondfodder scam case. Verdicts in twomore cases against him are expectedover the next few months.
The fodder scam involved theembezzlement of more than Rs. 970crore in government funds during LaluYadav’s term as the Chief Minister ofundivided Bihar from 1990 to 1997. Thelatest case involves the siphoningof Rs. 33.67 crore from the Chaibasatreasury against an allocationof Rs. 7.10 lakh in 1992-93. Mr Yadavwas named as the main conspiratorby the Central Bureau of Investigation.
IMT Ghaziabad selected as UnitedNations PRME Champion:Ghaziabad-based Institute ofManagement and Technology (IMT)has been selected as one of thechampions of the United Nations’initiative on Principles forResponsible Management Education(PRME). The announcement wasmade on January 23 at the WorldEconomic Forum in Davos,Switzerland.
PRME Champions Group comprisesa group of B-Schools engaged asPRME signatories from across theworld, committed to making broad-scale implementation ofsustainability principles a reality.IMT is now one of the 38 B-schoolsfrom various countries that are partof PRME Initiative for the 2018-19
Champions Cycle. The aim of thePRME Champions group is to worktowards developing and promotingactivities which focus on UnitedNations’ Sustainable DevelopmentGoals (SDGs).
Member-institutes will be required totake the lead in the areas ofcurriculum, research and partnership,as well as to contribute to grouplearning with examples of innovativepractices in implementing the goals.
Aadhaar is Oxford dictionary’sHindi word of 2017: Oxford
Dictionaries has chosen ‘Aadhaar’ asthe Hindi word of 2017. The word
gained popularity due to Aadhaarcard, which was in news last year andis likely to remain in highlight this
year as well. The announcement wasmade at a session Oxford Dictionaries’Hindi Word of the Year during the
ongoing Jaipur Literature Festival.
Other words such as Mitron,Notebandi, Gau-Rakshak were alsoconsidered, but the widespread
discussions and debates around‘Aadhaar’ was reason it was selected
as the word of the year.

Of the 90proposalsawarded toprovide flightconnectivityto more than300 regional
routes, Interglobe Aviation, theparent firm of IndiGo, was awarded amaximum of 20 proposals followed bySpiceJet with17. Jet Airways won 4proposals.
The States with maximum number ofairports and helipads which will seeactivation under UDAN 2 schemeinclude Uttarakhand (15), UttarPradesh (9), Arunachal Pradesh (8),Himachal Pradesh (6), Assam (5) andManipur (5). Some of the cities thatwould now be connected include
Kargil, Darbhanga, Kasauli, Bokaro,Dumka, Hubli, Kannur and Pakyong,among others.
India ranks 62 in InclusiveDevelopment: India was on the 22nd
of January ranked at the 62nd placeamong emerging economies onan Inclusive Development Index,much below China’s 26th position andPakistan’s 47th. Norway remains theworld’s most inclusive advancedeconomy, while Lithuania again topsthe list of emerging economies,the World Economic Forum (WEF) saidwhile releasing the yearly index
The index takes into account the“living standards, environmentalsustainability and protection of futuregenerations from furtherindebtedness”.
India was ranked 60th among 79developing economies last year, asagainst China’s 15th and Pakistan’s52nd position.
Among advanced economies, Norwayis followed by Ireland, Luxembourg,Switzerland and Denmark in the topfive. Small European economiesdominate the top of the index, withAustralia (9) the only non-Europeaneconomy in the top 10. The top-fivemost inclusive emerging economiesare Lithuania, Hungary, Azerbaijan,Latvia and Poland.
Performance is mixed among BRICSeconomies, with the RussianFederation ranking 19th, followedby China (26), Brazil (37), India (62)and South Africa (69). Theneighbouring countries ranked aboveIndia include Sri Lanka (40),Bangladesh (34) and Nepal (22).
IMF, World Bank peg India’s GDPgrowth higher than AdvanceEstimates: The InternationalMonetary Fund (IMF) and the WorldBank have projected India’s growth tobe higher than 6.5 per cent for thecurrent financial year (2017-18),calculated by the AdvanceEstimates. Both the multi lateralagencies pegged growth at 6.7 percent.
The IMF forecast China’s growth tocome down to 6.6 per cent in 2018,from 6.8 per cent in 2017. The WorldBank had projected China’s growth at6.4 per cent in 2018, compared to 6.8per cent in 2017.
India’s richest 1% corner 73% ofwealth generation: SurveyThe richest 1 per cent in India cornered73 per cent of the wealth generated inthe country last year, a new surveyshowed on the 21 st of January,presenting a worrying picture of risingincome inequality. Besides, 67 croreIndians comprising the populationspoorest half saw their wealth rise byjust 1 per cent, as per the surveyreleased by the international rights
group Oxfam hours before the start ofthe annual congregation of the rich andpowerful from across the world in thisresort town.
The situation appears even more grimglobally, where 82 per cent of thewealth generated last year worldwidewent to the 1 per cent, while 3.7billion people that account for thepoorest half of population saw noincrease in their wealth.
Mauritius Largest Source of FDI inIndia - Reserve Bank of India:Mauritius was the largest source offoreign investment in India (21.8percent share at market value ),followed by the US and the UK,according to a census by the ReserveBank of India. Singapore and Japanwere the next two sources of foreigndirect investment (FDI).
Union Government To Infuse OverRs. 88 Thousand Crore In 20 PSB:The Union Government announced88,139 crore rupees capital infusionin 20 public sector banks, PSBs,during the current fiscal ending 31stMarch to boost lending and revivegrowth. IDBI Bank will get the most-Rs10,610 crore followed by State Bankof India 8,800 crore rupees.
BilateralBilateralBilateral agreements with ASEANcountries: During bilateral meetingwith Indian Prime Minister NarendraModi, Philippines President RodrigoDuterte, discussed the menace of“urban terrorism” and “drugtrafficking”, and agreed to cooperateon intelligence sharing and capacity-building.
Singapore’s PM Lee Hsien Loongexpressed optimism about India-ASEAN ties, and said Singapore canshare experience and know-how on“fintech” (financial technology) whichwill help the move towards digitalcashless economy, one of thegovernment’s flagship initiatives afterdemonetisation.
India, Cambodia ink 4 pacts:India and Cambodia on the 27 th ofJanuary inked four pacts, includingone to improve cooperation inprevention, investigation of crimesand legal assistance in criminalmatters, besides a line of creditfrom India to fund Cambodia’s StungSva Hab water resources developmentproject for $36.92 million.
India and Cambodia also signed aMoU on the prevention of humantrafficking.They also inked a pact forcultural exchanges through 2018-2020.

TELANGANATELANGANAUAE firms to invest Rs. 3,500Crore in Telangana: Business
conglomerates Lulu Group and B R
Shetty Group signed separate
Memoranda of Understanding (MoU)
with the State government on the 28th
of January for a combined investment
of Rs. 3,500 crore in the State. While
Lulu Group will invest Rs. 2,500
crore, B R Shetty Group will invest
Rs. 1,000 crore.
The Lulu Group signed a MoU for
establishing a vegetable processing
unit in Medak district, a food
processing unit in Ranga Reddy
district and a mega shopping mall
spread over 1.8 million sft near
Malaysian Township in Hyderabad.
These three projects are expected to
generate direct employment to about
6,000 people in the State.
Similarly, another MoU was signed
with B R Shetty Group which will
invest in three major projects with a
cumulative investment of about Rs
1,000 crore over a period of three to
five years. The group will set up a
pharma manufacturing and R&D
(research and development) unit, a
medical device manufacturing unit
and also establish greenfield multi-
specialty hospitals and higher
education institutions. Both the
pharmaceutical manufacturing and
medical device manufacturing units
will be established in 20 acres land
each. Telangana Medical Devices Park
is coming up in Sultanpur on the
outskirts of Hyderabad.
