As we recover from celebrating the Tolbooth's 10th birthday, with sell-out performances from Daniel Sloss and Gallagher & Lyle, an undoubted highlight was the commission by Aidan O'Rourke for the senior jazz and trad groups, The Golden Steps.

This was a significant challenge for the young players and they rose to the occasion magnificently, resulting in a truly magical performance and a standing ovation from the audience. Big thanks to Aidan, the performers and tutors who all contributed to create a truly special legacy for the Tolbooth's 10th birthday.

And looking forward...we continue with a very eclectic mix, return visits from Martin Taylor and James Grant, with Chris Difford sharing stories and songs from his life.

All the way from Minnesota, some mighty singing from Davina and the Vagabonds with a bluesy, sassy swagger and closer to home Edinburgh's Niki King with her funk injected 8-piece band.

The very best of the current Scottish indie scene are well represented by Admiral Fallow, We Were Promised Jetpacks and Flood of Red.

And we have some of trad's finest in June with Capercaillie in The Albert Halls, Dàimh in Killin and The Tannahill Weavers and guest musicians from Galway at the Tolbooth.

And to round up June we have a very special classical performance from the Auricle Ensemble who will be bringing their Mini-Mahler to the Tolbooth!

Seattle's country soul sensation Rachel Lyn Harrington draws from a rich array of influences including an upbringing in the Pentecostal pines of Oregon and a dad with a secret stash of Motown and Stax albums.

A 2011 winner in Merlefest's esteemed Chris Austin songwriting contest (previous winners include Gillian Welch and Tift Merritt), Rachel has wrangled up three other gals for this tour of UK, the band comprised of bass, drums, fiddle and guitar.

The live show will include a set of the girls' favourite country and rockabilly covers to boot. This is Rachel’s sixth annual tour of the UK but her very first with a full band.

Peter Longworth grew up in Brig O'Turk and attended McLaren High School. His exposure to contemporary music as a member of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland was the catalyst for his first forays into composition and in 2008 he was awarded a scholarship by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he currently studies under composer, Matthew King.

The concert will feature the Astrid Quartet, a string quartet of some of Scotland's finest young players, who will be performing both as a group and as soloists. And it will also be an opportunity to hear the London-based, Bilitis Trio (a flute, viola and harp trio) making their Scottish debut, before they continue to tour the country.

There will be everything from Tango to jazz-inspired piano music and music taking the inspiration from the films of Martin Scorsese, the Barcelona subway and even a couple of boat songs!

Described by The Guardian as “the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene” and twice winners of the BBC Radio 2 folk award for Best Duo, Spiers and Boden have made the genre of spontaneous, punky English folk very much their own stomping ground.

Loud, proud, and with just a few acoustic instruments, they create a multitude of textures upon which they present traditional stories and dance music which have taken them on to the main stages of major festivals.

Jon Boden (singer, fiddle, guitar, stomp-box), from Chicago, follows in the footsteps of many of the great folk-singers with his theatrical style. Birmingham-born John Spiers (melodeon, concertina) has carved his own space in the folk scene with his unique blending of traditional squeezebox styles and contemporary dance music.

Five voices, one family, nine Mòd gold medals through three generations. The Campbells of Greepe - Caimbeulaich a’ Ghnìoba - are one of the great dynasties of Gaelic song.

Pipers and singers who love to dance, they are masters of puirt-à-beul, Gaelic mouth music, but their songs encompass a whole musical world - pibroch songs, work songs, and the songs of their own community.

The doyenne, Kenna Campbell, is joined by brother Seumas, daughters Wilma and Mary Ann Kennedy and niece Maggie Macdonald for a night of music and great craic.

Amongst the special guests are virtuoso American step-dancer, Nic Gareiss, and award-winning piper, Lorne MacDougall.

Known for making beautifully crafted indie pop: upbeat, sunny tunes with a surreal, often dark, twist, Zoey Van Goey return to the Tolbooth to headline reLOADED this April and indeed their return is highly anticipated.

Since self-releasing their debut album in 2009 - the year in which they were also last seen in Stirling - the band impressed the ever-discerning Chemikal Underground resulting in the label releasing the 2011 follow-up 'Properller Versus Wings'.

Their live shows remain an important part of the band's identity, evidenced by the fact that Belle and Sebastian asked them to headline the centre stage at All Tomorrow's Parties Festival. Making this particular Tolbooth outing wvwn more of a must see event.

This six piece come from as far apart as South Africa and the USA but it was in Airdrie where they found each other and Flood of Red was born.

Originally a trio who met at the local skate scene they soon expanded to a sextet.

Their sound has hardcore and emo influences, think pile upon pile of jagged guitars, melodic and abrasive vocals, a squall of electronics and Satan's own in-house rhythm section.

Well known to the Tolbooth for his performances with Lau and Drever, McCusker and Womble, Orcadian Kris Drever is a fine singer and guitarist and we are thrilled to host one of his rare solo performances.

Nominated Folk Singer of the Year at the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Kris's debut album 'Black Water' won him the Horizon Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2007 and his highly acclaimed second album, 'Mark the Hard Earth' was released in 2010.

I'm guessing that the younger version of We Were Promised Jetpacks would never have believed that in 2012 they would have just completed a US tour including a date at the Coachella Music Festival in California.

Assembled in Edinburgh as high school friends in 2003, Adam Thompson, (Guitar/Vocal), Michael Palmer (Guitar), Sean Smith (Bass) and Darren Lackie (Drums) they have gone on to become one of Scotland's rising bands.

We were Promised Jetpacks have certainly established themselves as part of the Scottish indie scene that includes The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit. More recent years have seen WWPJ soar aural heights and emotional depths in every sense: their sound is a cacophonous tour de force: louder, wilder, avidly literate; fiercely melodic, yet eagerly restrained.

Throughout their career Capercaillie have drawn on two great strengths to inspire them.

The first of these is the astonishing musical dexterity of the various fiddle, whistle, flute and pipes who have performed with them over the years, led by the accordion and keyboards of band founder Donald Shaw.

The other foundation of the band has been the peerless voice of co-founder Karen Matheson, described by Sean Connery as having "a throat that is surely touched by God".

They all performed in front of friends and family, as well as enjoying watching the Paul McKenna Band. This was the culmination of the latest round of Scots Song workshops with Amy going into the schools. An addition this time around was a visit to the schools by Matthew Fitt, Scots poet and writer. The children also learn about the stories of the songs, and the language as well.

ENGAGE WORKSHOPS & TALKMay 26, 11am – 3pmThe Changing Room

The visual arts and photography are excellent mediums for artists, communities, children and young people to explore and research numerous topics and areas of their lives.

Both are excellent mediums within which to examine every facet of human existence - both good and bad. Many artists illustrate areas of life not

normally addressed within a learning context such as nudity, sexuality and death.

The aim of this workshop is to allow artists, creative practitioners and relevant teaching staff to develop their confidence and skills in addressing difficult topics in art and discuss their possible uses.

We will also be addressing the safe use of photography in both formal and informal learning environments. Participants will develop a stronger sense of what is appropriate viewing material and how it can be justified within the context of a particular learning environment/group dynamic.

Led by photographer and artist Lisa Fleming with a talk by Jo Mawdsley, Education Officers at the National Galleries of Scotland. Please book through the Tolbooth Box Office.

SUMMER SCHOOLSWe are just confirming the final details as we go to press for our programme of Summer Schools and Workshops from July – Aug 2012.

CITY MUSIC PROJECT IN SCHOOLSThe City Music Project has expanded from it’s usual home in the Tolbooth on a Friday evening from 7 till 9 and is now running in some Stirling secondary schools thanks to funding from YMI.

The workshops which are geared towards songwriting are taking place in St Modans, Bannockburn and Dunblane High Schools with selected groups.

The beauty of the Project is that it is open to young people who have no previous musical experience, right up to those who are showing signs of being the next Lennon or McCartney.

The schools programme will run until June this year and is already proving to be a huge success. Whilst the workshops in schools are for select pupils, the Friday night workshops at the Tolbooth are open to all. For more information please contact Stephen Hume.

The Writing on Your Wall is an exhibition that looks at printmaking as a socially concerned, democratic media designed to disseminate radical ideas. The exhibition, featuring contemporary commissions and historical examples and artifacts, looks back to a history of polemical, iconoclastic and satirical printmaking. Taking its name both from the biblically inspired idiom (Daniel 5:25–28) and a British Situationist poster from 1968 the exhibition not only proposes political change but can perhaps also be seen to acknowledge the increasing marginalisation of print in a digital age.

Edinburgh Printmakers have commissioned and publish new prints by Art & Language, Jeremy Deller, Ruth Ewan, Alisdair Gray and Tom O’Sullivan and Joanne Tatham.

Their works will be presented alongside prints produced by Christopher Logue and by King Mob in the late 1960s, James Gillray in the late seventeenth century, pamphlets produced by political presses in Britain in the first half of the twentieth century and other political ephemera.

The Changing Room is pleased to present a selection of local artist work from this years Forth Valley Open Studios.

The Forth Valley Open Studios was first launched in the summer of 2010 and is an annual nine day event which takes place in the Forth Valley, Central Scotland. This year the event will run from 9 – 17 June with local artists, galleries and arts organisations opening their doors to invite the general public in to view their art works.

The aim of Forth Valley Open Studios is to make art more accessible to the public, particularly within their local area. They do this by promoting local artists/makers and encouraging members of the public to visit the open studios and meet the artists.

This interaction is mutually beneficial: participants have the opportunity to showcase their work and likewise members of the public gain access to work spaces and experiences that would not normally be available.

The exhibition at The Changing Room will showcase work by leading artists and makers from across the Forth Valley. Highlighting the diversity and talent we have in the area, the exhibition will include jewellery, textiles, ceramics, photography, painting and much more.
