GROWTH, RESPECT, OPPORTUNITY, WORTH
Welcome to All
Dear Parents and Guardians Well done to all of our students who competed in last Friday’s Faction Athletics Carnival. Thank you to Mr Logan and the staff for organising the day. P&C THANK YOU Thank you once again to the P&C for supporting the school this term both at the faction Athletics carnival and through the weekly breakfast club. Thank you again to the little army of helpers who assist with the home reading program . Your assistance is most appreciated. The students and staff really appreciated the kind gesture.

As you know, our school has been participating in Woolworths Earn & Learn. The program has now finished for this year, so a big thanks to everyone who supported our school. We’re now at the important stage of the program where the Sticker Sheets are collected and lodged as our Earn & Learn claim. We will then be able to get new educational equipment for our school. The more we collect, the more we can redeem. So this week, please send in your Woolworths Earn & L:earn Sticker Sheets and any loose Earn & Learn stickers you may have. Remember to check your handbag, the car glove box or they maybe stuck on the fridge. Every little bit helps. Thanks again for all your support!
START OF TERM 4
Seasons for Growth Living with change and loss
FACTION CARNIVAL
After a wet end to Winter, the beginning of Spring brought some fantastic weather our way and you could not have asked for two more perfect days for our Athletics Carnival. On Thursday 14 September we held jumps, throws and long distance runs. Students came from their classes to compete in their events throughout the day. A big thank you to the many parents who volunteered to help out at the jumps and throws events. On Friday 15 September we held the Athletics Carnival and all students from Kindy to Year 6 were involved. The day started with the Factions marching out to their bays. The students were looking fantastic in their faction shirts and hats. . All the students from Years 1—6 competed in a sprint and tabloid events. It was great to see so many parents coming along and supporting their children throughout the day. Again, a big thank you to the parents who helped out at the Carnival on Friday. Another big thank you to the teachers who performed many different jobs throughout the day and worked tirelessly to keep the cheering going and the carnival running to time. Congratulations to all competitors on the day.
Universal Children’s Week is an annual event supported internationally, by the United Nations, and in Australia, by the Children’s Week Council of Australia. Universal Children’s Week is held every October. As it turns out, it is also during our Education Week. The permanent theme for this event in Australia is: ‘A Caring World Shares’. From the 21—29 October, various activities will be held around Australia and around the world. During this week we celebrate cultural diversity. There is also a call to give due regard to the rights, well-being, needs and accomplishments of children here in Australia and all over the world. To celebrate Universal Children’s Week and Education Week at Thornlie Primary School, an Assembly is planned for Wednesday 25 October—Universal Children’s Day, at 9.00am. This Assembly is being organised by Dr Nazareth, and will showcase various musical items by children and for children. For this Assembly, we ask that all students (staff and parents as well if you wish) dress in cultural attire (e.g as a Chinese girl, a Greek boy) or dress in blue to support the efforts of UNICEF (a United Nations organisation that does a lot of work for children)
As this is the last Newsletter for the term, we wish all of our families a restful break and advise that the first day for students in Term 4 is Tuesday 10 October. The Term 4 Planner is included with this newsletter and can be downloaded from our website .
Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Thornlie Primary School we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce and related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth which will commence in Term 4. This program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research which highlights the importance of social support and the need to practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks. If you think your son or daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth we would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program. Thornlie Primary School is pleased to be offer this important program through the Chaplaincy Service and we are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved. If you require further information, please contact the school chaplain, Christine Thomas.
