Dear Friends,

Having just completed the NSC’s Fiscal Year 2021, our thoughts go to the challenges and the successes that we have all faced over those 12 months. We write this letter to not only provide a summary, but also to express our THANKS for all that you have done and continue to do in support of Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

At the start of the Fiscal Year ‘21, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NSC made the decision to close its physical doors to all clients and volunteers and suspend the collection of food donations from the public. Although these were difficult decisions, the safety of our clients, staff and volunteers was and still is at the forefront of our thinking. We did, however, feel strongly that we needed to continue to support our clients, and thus our case managers immediately shifted from in-person client visits to frequent phone conversations and emails. We also considered it critical to continue to provide food to existing clients as well as over 100 new families struggling to obtain this basic necessity. And so, we completely modified our food pantry program, pre-bagging food and providing it to clients in a socially distant manner at their scheduled appointments.

As the year wore on, it became apparent that many clients were in danger of losing their homes due to the inability to pay rent or mortgage; the pandemic, as we all know, resulted in many people losing their income. And even though there was a moratorium on evictions due to failure to pay rent, we knew this was only temporary, and that rent was eventually coming due. Consequently, NSC decided to quadruple the amount that we would pay for rent/mortgage/utilities per year, allowing many of our clients to remain in their homes with heat and electricity.

Due to the pandemic, NSC standard programs such as the holiday gift program, Thanksgiving dinner, and the start-of-school backpack program had to be modified drastically, with a goal of minimizing physical contact while keeping a personal connection with our clients. With the need for employment services increasing, the Brack Career Center continued to provide career and job search coaching virtually and created a library of online resources for clients to reference on demand.

On the revenue front, many of our typical fundraisers, e.g., the Fall for Natick Event and the Annual Telethon, were unable to be held. Instead, we moved to virtual fundraisers, including our first Fall for Natick Virtual 5K Run/1 mile Walk.

Suffice it to say, it was a challenging year for NSC — but it was also a very gratifying time. We were able to assist 745 Natick families with food, financial assistance and finding new jobs. And there were many special circumstances where NSC made a difference; for example, we helped one family stay afloat while facing medical expenses for their children. Throughout it all, our Natick community proved, once again, to be generous and caring with an outpouring of monetary donations and individual fundraising efforts. NSC would not be able to help our neighbors without the generosity of all of you.

We are now looking forward with hope and anticipation. Hope that we can put the pandemic behind us and return to a more normal life, and anticipation that we will soon be able to see our clients and volunteers back in our offices. Thank you for all of your support!

Carol Gloff Dan Shea NSC Board President Executive Director

There was no way we would’ve been able to survive without the Natick Service Council. It is an amazing program for families in need.

It was June 2016 when Tim and I welcomed our long- awaited twin sons, Finn and Mack. The twins were born at just 24 weeks and each weighed just under two pounds. Finn and Mack spent the first six months of their lives at Brigham and Women’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and we were told their chances of survival were very low.

At three months old, Finn was diagnosed with eye cancer. Weighing less than five pounds, Finn started chemotherapy for the first time. Finn has had to have chemotherapy since then because with this type of cancer, the tumors come back and continue to grow until the child is five or six years old. Finn is legally blind and hard of hearing.

Before the boys were born, we lived in West Brookfield. While the boys were in the NICU, Tim was continuing to live and work out there during the weekdays while I stayed with my parents in Natick to be closer to the boys.

Thanks to the amazing care from their doctors, both boys survived and they were discharged from the hospital in November 2016. But, with all of Finn’s medical conditions, including cerebral palsy and epilepsy, the doctors told us that we needed to live closer to the hospitals in Boston to ensure Finn could receive all the necessary medical services he would need.

We tried to sell our house in West Brookfield, but ended up having to short sell it. We were fortunate that my parents have an in-law apartment that we could move into here in Natick. Even with my parent’s support and Tim working full time, the medical bills, diapers and formula were just overwhelming and it was really hard for us to stay afloat.

Shortly after we moved to Natick, Vi Tutuny, a long-time Natick Service Council volunteer and friend of my parents, told them, “Make sure Shannon comes and sees me.”

I will never forget the day that Vi said to me,

I was born and raised here in Natick and knew the Natick Service Council. My father and I had been volunteers and I had been involved with collecting and donating food. I never thought I would need the Natick Service Council’s support.

A lot of people think the Natick Service Council provides families in need with food. But the program is so much more than that. I guess you never know unless you’ve never been a part of it. They don’t realize that the Natick Service Council has a Thanksgiving program, Holiday Gift program, and if you need diapers, they will get you diapers; if you need clothes, they’ll find you clothes. They asked me if I needed anything and I know they would have found me anything I needed.

One of the most amazing things the Natick Service Council did for my family was when the boys were two years old. I got a letter asking if we wanted to be part of the Natick Service Council’s Holiday Gift Program. I filled out the form and sent it back. I was so nervous about Christmas because we couldn’t afford to get the boys anything. Both boys have developmental disabilities so I wasn’t sure if Finn would understand, but Mack understood a little bit.

When I went to get the box of gifts for the boys, there were two huge boxes for my kids. There were toys, snowsuits, games, books, trucks. I broke down in tears and thought, “They are going to love this.”

The volunteer, who is a neighbor of mine said, “Oh my goodness, don’t cry. This is what people want to do for families like yours.” It was so overwhelming to know I was receiving so much love from a random stranger who wanted to help our family without knowing our family.

When the boys woke up on Christmas morning, Finn was confused but very excited. Mack came down and asked, “Did he come?” Without the help of the Natick Service Council, I wouldn’t have been able to say that he came.

It’s really hard to ask for help. A lot of people are too proud. I wasn’t so sure about it because I was nervous. Was I taking from somebody else who really needs it? After paying medical bills and all the hospital stays, we had barely anything left. There was no way we would’ve been able to survive without the Natick Service Council. It is an amazing program for families in need.
