THE CLERGY LETTER

When we think about all the issues that face our world today, we can be overwhelmed and wonder how we can possibly make a difference. The news seems to get worse by the day. The lives of millions of people across the globe have been disrupted by war and violence. Refugees flee from their homes in search of a better life, countries to which they flee are closing their borders in an effort to protect their own way of life and culture. Closer to home, selfishness and greed seem to dominate our political decision-making and affect even the relationships within our families. But we are the disciples of Jesus. From the moment of His Death on the Cross, the light of His love, revealed in His Resurrection from the Dead, has been the beacon shining into our hearts to show us the way to life. He has enlightened us with the Gospel Good News of His love. He gives us confidence to persevere in spite of all that works against us, whether it is the world around us or the doubts of our hearts and minds. Lent, which begins this year on Wednesday 1st March (Ash Wednesday) invites us to bring Jesus' love to others. It may only be by simple acts of kindness and generosity, a word of encouragement or forgiveness. With the light of Christ, we ourselves can see and will be seen helping this world to avoid the greatest catastrophe of self-destruction. Lent is not a loan, it is a GIFT! News from Rushall School Spring Term.

After a very busy Christmas at Rushall School including some super performances of our Christmas Play “Papa Panov” and a beautiful carol service, we have started our new Spring Term. We have already got lots of displays of our work up around the school, including psychedelic album covers, posters about E-safety, and our interpretation of the work of the artist Paul Klee. We are very excited about all of the exciting events coming up this term, including a Maths workshop for parents, Open Mornings, Christingle Service, World Book Day, and of course the wonderful Ptfa disco! There will be a special focus on science with our Science week which starts on March 6th - lots going on including visits from Wessex Water and a trip to the Winchester Science Centre! Last term we also did lots of fundraising. We all made poppies for Remembrance Sunday, which were displayed at the school and then in venues around Pewsey- you may have seen them! The poppies were sold off, and £237 was raised for the Royal British Legion. Our School Council voted that the Autumn term’s charity would be UNICEF, as they had been very moved by reports form Syria and other areas about refugees . A Christmas jumper day was held and some spectacular designs were worn by children and staff. A highlight was matching Christmas dresses from our ladies in the school office! £112 was sent to UNICEF. The School Council will choose another charity to support this term. We have been delighted to welcome new members of staff as well as new pupils, and the languages of French and Spanish spoken fluently by some of our new joiners are great additions to our language learning. Music continues to flourish at the school as well, with ukulele lessons and our school choir. Although the weather has been rather frosty, it has not stopped us enjoying our sports outdoors and indoors with support from the wonderful team at Innov8. In our Collective Worship each Thursday we celebrate the achievements of children at Rushall, in and out of school, and we have a new display in the hallway about this - which is becoming full as the children tell us about all of their activities! It is going to be a busy term as always, and our children are looking forward to the new challenges to come - all supported by our fantastic staff and Head Teacher.

SAFETY AWARENESS

Police have been made aware of a telephone scam in Wiltshire and are urging residents to be vigilant. On Friday, a woman received a phone call from a man who said he was calling from Wiltshire Council. The man claimed to be from the council tax department and was very convincing. He told the woman that her instalments had increased recently and as a result, she was out of sync with her payments. The man told her she owed just £17 and could pay it over the phone immediately if she provided her card details. The woman obliged but shortly after, she received a call from her bank informing her that somebody had booked an airline ticket costing £1,800 using her card. She has now closed the account and the bank has agreed to refund the money. The council tax department at Wiltshire Council would always send bills for outstanding payments and would not ordinarily contact customers directly by phone for money unless there had been some previous contact. Please be extra vigilant when answering the phone – Do not be fooled: Do not telephone anyone at that stage as the phone line remains open and you are simply telephoning them back without realising. They will then continue with your assistance in stealing your money by any of the above methods. Do not give out any personal details or banking details over the phone, and if you suspect the call to be suspicious, hang up immediately and report it, using a different, alternative phone line to Action Fraud via 0300 123 2040. Alternatively, visit www.actionfraud.police.uk.

THE GOOD COMPANIONS CLUB

Our first meeting of the year was held on the 7th of February. We work very

hard to organise these meetings, so it was extremely disappointing when only eight people came.

Our next meeting will be on the 7

th of March, at 2.00pm when we hope a few

more people will come. If not, we feel that this situation cannot continue and we will have to think very seriously about carrying on or closing the Club,

which would be a shame as it has been going since 1945.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday the 4th of April at

2.00pm. If attendance is poor we will have to close the Club then, as it is not viable will so few members, usually only eight or ten.

All meetings are held in Upavon Village Hall

Easter Fayre For the second year running, Marlborough & District Rotary Club will be organising an Easter Fayre in Pewsey at the Bouverie Hall in aid of Great Western Hospital’s (GWH) Radio Therapy Appeal. Brighter Futures, the Charity Arm of GWH, has to raise £2.9m for the purchase of two Linear Accelerators and to provide training. The appeal has now passed the first million and construction of the building has started.

In support of this appeal, the Easter Fayre will be held in Pewsey at the Bouverie Hall on Saturday the 8th April (10:00am to 3:00pm). There will be many high quality attractions including Silk Flowers, Food, Plants, Fashion Accessories, Children’s clothes and many more. All the monies raised at this Fayre will be donated to this appeal. Having a local Radiotherapy Unit will provide huge benefits to cancer patients. Patients would no longer have to endure the stress of travelling to either Royal United Hospital (RUH) at Bath or Oxford University Hospital (OUH) at Oxford and waiting times would be reduced.

Adults £2.50 Children under 12 - Free Car Park – Free
