Friends:

What is All Saints' Day? We celebrate it every year on the first Sunday of No-vember. It used to be called All Hallow’s Day - the day when the hallowed dead were remembered and honored through various rites and celebrations. (By the way, the night before All Hallow’s Day was known as Hallow’s Eve, which we still celebrate as Halloween.) These traditions predate Christianity, but over time Christians appropriated them and made them their own, just as they did the winter and spring solstices. All Saint’s Day is very important in Catholicism, and some of us Protestant types still observe it as well. It’s com-mon for Protestants to do what we do every All Saint's Day: remember those we’ve lost in the past year.

The question is what is meant by that term ‘saint.’ Who are the saints among us, living or dead? We don’t have much use for saints, and that’s partly be-cause we have a distorted understanding of what that means. By ‘saint’ peo-ple usually mean a model for moral perfection or rectitude.

But it seems to me that sainthood actually has something to do with leaving a legacy. We don’t remember those we call ‘saints’ so much for what they did in their own time; instead we remember them for how they influenced what came later, including the present. When we lift up the names of those we have lost in the past year, it’s not so much that we’re remembering the past; it’s more that we’re celebrating all that those folks made possible in the pre-sent, and for the future. Sainthood has something to do with leaving things better than we found them. For Christians, it’s about being part of Christ’s work of redemption, in whatever unique ways God has called each of us to do that. And when we’re gone, that work of redemption continues.

Pastor’s Message cont’d.

This year we celebrate All Saint’s Sunday on November 3. So who are the saints among us? I’d say, take a look around the pews that day. Probably nobody here is perfect in any moral sense – proba-bly not perfect in the way Jimmy Carter wanted to be perfect, for example (remember - he once confessed for having "lusted in his heart"). But we can all have a legacy just through being part of this church.

It’s a good thing to think about every once in a while: in what ways might we, as a church, be influ-encing not only the present, but also the future, for good? Who knows?

Peace and Love,

Pastor Jed Watson

argo’s Message

Our youth will be helping at Feed My Starving Children on November 15. Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children. Meals that we’ll be packing are shipped to over 70 countries. FMSC is not funded by the government, so they “humbly re-quest” a donation when we come pack meals. The youth will be hosting the Coffee Hour on November 10 with all proceeds going to Feed My Starving Children

Advent Faire is held on the first Sunday of Advent, which will be December 1. This is a day we all gather for a time of fellowship as we prepare for Christmas. Children will begin in Church with their families and dismissed after Sharing Time with Pastor Jed. They will have time to shop the Precious Gift Sale and work on Christmas crafts. The children will then join their parents to decorate our Church family Christmas tree and have lunch that is provided by the Senior High. Please join us on this very special day.

Parents: Please fill out the form to let us know if your child will or will not be here for the Christmas Pro-gram December 15. Return it to the classroom teacher as soon as possible.

Youth:

We will be having our Mission Club on November 3 but it will be combined with a Mission Trip 2014 Infor-mational Meeting. Youth (freshman as of June 2014 through graduating seniors) and parents interested should attend. We will have the meeting first in the Chapel. After the meeting, parents are excused and we will continue with lunch and preparing food for P.A.D.S. We will conclude at 2:00. Our next regular Club will be November 17.

PRESCHOOL NEWS

Preschool had lots of fun in October. We enjoyed our visit from the local Fire Department, we got to sit in the big red pumper truck and Fireman Phillips showed us what he looks like when he goes to a fire. We also learned not to be afraid of them and how to stay safe if there is a fire. We had a great time at the pumpkin farm, we enjoyed a hay ride, seeing the farm animals and the best part was picking out our pumpkins to bring home. November brings us many things to be thankful for. Pastor Jed will share the story of Noah and will teach the children a fun song about the great flood that the children are sure to enjoy. The four’s will celebrate a feast in the classroom, and make homemade bread and butter almost like they did at the first Thanksgiving. The Preschool would like to thank the Tanneberger family for painting the preschool shed. It looks fabu-lous. Thank you for all your hard work and kindness. As always we love visitors, so stop by and see what learning is going on at preschool.

Our Altar Flower Chart is posted on the Bulletin Board in Lauren Hall. For those of you unaware of the procedure for purchasing flowers for a specific date here is the way it works. Very simple - you choose the Sunday and Shirley, the Church Secretary, does the rest. Our flowers are ordered and delivered from Flo-ral Acres out of Antioch. The

charge is $27. During the week you’ve signed up for, Shirley will contact you. You need only indicate to her whether you want fresh flow-ers in a vase or the triangular dish arrangement. If you have color choices she can specify that, as well. Really a nice way to participate in deco-rating the altar but still able to

take home and enjoy yourself after the 10:00 a.m. Worship Service.

Millburn UCC has a commitment for three people to serve our Brothers and Sisters at the Holy Family Soup Kitchen in Waukegan. We've committed to the 1st Thursday of every month. For November, that would be November 7th. Volunteers must be 13 and over. If you'd like to volunteer, contact Joe Warren at 214-460-4178 or [email protected] or Pastor Jed.

Soup Kitchen Helpers Needed

Please consider signing up to provide refresh-ments for coffee hours. It is a vital part of Millburn UCC. It is a meaningful, intergenera-tional gathering – held regularly after our 10:00 Sunday Worship Service.

The sign-up sheet is located on the bulletin

board in Lauren Hall. Groups, committees

and individuals are encouraged to volunteer.
