THE PUNIC WARS

Rome Spreads its Power Roman power grew

slowly as the Legions fought for control of the Italian Peninsula.

Rome treated those they conquered differently. The neighboring Latin's on the Tiber River became full citizens of Rome. Farther away people

had all the rights of citizens except for the right to vote.

All others fell into a third category, called allies.

The Commercial Network

With such easy access to the Mediterranean Roman merchants moved goods by land and by sea. They traded Roman wine

and Olive oil for things from other lands such as a variety of food, raw materials and manufactured goods.

At the time of the Republic however another city interfered with Roman access to the Mediterranean. The most dominant city

on the Mediterranean was Carthage.
