“Let me just stress that thefact of one becoming a state
witness is with the prosecu-tion. It depends now on who
will handle the case. If it’s with the Ombudsman, it’s theOmbudsman who will deter-mine whether she can be astate witness. So that is not
within our prerogative, it’s with the body that will beprosecuting the case,” aniya. NBordadora, TQuismundo

Pregnant smokers doomeven future generationsNi Philip C. Tubeza
WOMEN who smoke during pregnancy endanger the health not just of thechild they are bearing but also that of
their future great-grandchildren, anantismoking group said yesterday.HealthJustice said
a recent study in the American Journal of Physiology—LungCellular and Molecu-lar Physiology showedsmoking during preg-nancy “is linked toasthma up to thethird generation.”
“This means that a
woman’s smoking can
afflict offspring farbeyond her own chil-dren, going as far asher great-grandchil-dren,” it added.
The group notedthat earlier studieshave demonstratedhow parental smokinghas been linked to be-havioral problems as
well as to a decrease
in cognitive functionand self-control inchildren.
“Even though thereare multiple causesfor childhood asthma, research linking thisserious chronic condi-tion to maternal nico-tine exposure duringpregnancy for up tothree generationsshould give mothers-to-be even more rea-sons to reconsidersmoking,” HealthJus-tice quoted doctor
Virender K. Rehan, the author of the
study, as saying.
“Eliminating theuse of tobacco duringpregnancy could helphalt the rise in child-hood asthma and en-sure healthier childrenfor generations tocome,” it added.
Lawyer Diana Triv-ino, HealthJusticeproject manager, saidChronic ObstructivePulmonary Disease(COPD) and asthmaare among the lead-ing causes of deathsin the Philippines.
“Studies haveshown how the dis-
ease can affect pro-
ductivity and impairone’s quality of life.People need to knowthat their smokingcan seriously affectthe health and wel-fare of their childrenand of their children’schildren,” Trivinosaid.
“If informationsuch as this were tobe placed on cigarettepacks, maybe fewerparents would contin-ue to smoke,” sheadded.

Celebs’ thoughtson a rainy day
Now that we’re in its after-math, is “Pain, pain, go away”all that we can say?
CARLA ABELLANA : I setaside thoughts about myself and thought only about our
country. What I saw in the news was nothing new, really. But Isaw that it was getting worse by the day and realized that we re-ally have to do somethingquick. It was great seeing thePhilippine Navy and PhilippineCoast Guard involved rightaway. I also saw even noncelebsreaching out to victims throughphotos in social media. Itamazed me that people were re-ally making efforts. It just goesto show that no matter what
your s tatus in life is, there is a
way for you to help. It doesn’thave to be financial and youdon’t have to go to far-flung ar-eas. Somewhere, someone is inneed of help and every individ-ual is capable of helping. The
Filipino people are resilient, strong and positive no matter what.
MARTIN NIEVERA : WhileMaring was raging, all I kept re-peating in my head was “Again?Seriously?” As resilient as theFilipinos can be, I still feel wecan definitely be spared fromthe constant fear of floodsrewriting our future. I alwaysfeel helpless when I see thesecalamities in the news in thecomfort of my very dry couch inmy very dry living room. All of a sudden I want to turn intoIron Man and save every drowning child and family. AsTony Stark with just his bank
account, I could do wondersduring times like these. But un-fortunately, I am none of theabove. My only superherostrength is my will to help, my
song to heal and my heart topray for a very wet and still-smiling nation. So since I amleaving for a week (right beforemy 3D concert on Sept. 13) toguest in a couple of US showsof Anne Curtis (Aug. 31 at
Agua Caliente in Palm Springsand Sept. 1 at the Grand SierraHotel in Reno), I will try tosqueeze every sympathetic dol-lar I can out of our audiencesand bring home their donationsto the Red Cross and Sagip Ka-
pamilya Foundation. I may notbe Iron Man but I will fly. I willdo all I can for my fellow Fil-ipino. I guess moments likethese make us all want to be“Super Filipinos!”
MARVIN AGUSTIN: I wasthinking about how the stormshitting our country have wors-ened, so the local governmentunits and all of us Pinoys mustcome up with better strategiesto cope with and to prevent
floods. It’s already 2013 and yet we still have the same problem.I hope the time will come whenno one will have to stay inevacuation centers and wait forrelief goods.
MIRIAM QUIAMBAO:I am grateful to God thatmy family and lovedones are safe and that Iam blessed to be [ableto] help the flood vic-tims in whatever way I
can.KIM ATIENZA : “Cli-mate change is real.Gone is the era of theo-ry. What we have now isthe age of conse-quences.” These are AlGore’s words that keptringing in my head[while] listening to tor-rential rain pouring non-stop on my roof. Stronghabagat and extreme ty-phoons are now part of
my life and my chil-
dren’s life. We have to act nowdouble time.
JED MADELA : Having beenaffected by two similar situa-
tions in the past, I couldn’t helpfeeling paranoid about my safe-ty and the safety of others. I re-alized that we shouldn’t takethings for granted. Instead of pointing fingers at others andblaming them for the “demise”of the country, we should actand do our part.
SUZI ABRERA : I thoughtabout how situations like haba-gat/Maring would likely be aregular occurrence. There is no
way to fight nature so we mightas well be prepared for it. Nowmore than ever, my family hasto be prepared for disasters thatmay strike again. Planning andpreparing for disasters will be apriority.
