‘Tadhana’ a truthful, touching tale

With a title like this, onecan’t help but be mindful of that momentous first meeting.

It starts at an Italian airport with a weepy Mace (AngelicaPanganiban), a young womanbound for home, ditching per-sonal stuff from her overweightluggage. A kind stranger, fellowFilipino Anthony (JM de Guz-man), who declares himself nei-ther a “manyak o magnanakaw”(pervert or thief), offers to helpout, so she wouldn’t have tothrow away her things.

That’s just the start of an in-

evitable, if strange, friendship. Anthony immediately learnsthat Mace carries heavy bag-

gage inside as well, having justbroken up with her longtimeboyfriend. She needs a shoulderto cry on, and there’s somethingabout Anthony that makes herspill out her true feelings. Intime, the scenario leads to anunprecedented journey of dis-covery and deconstruction.

Tadhana eschews the typicalrom-com rotes; its free-flowingconversations mirror real-life in-teractions, down to the awk-

ward pauses. It’s not ground-breaking, to be sure, but thefilm is certainly creativeenough, showing two charactersthat are genuine, recognizablepersons with personalities andthoughts that the audience canidentify with—often throughoutits roughly 90-minute runningtime.

It gets so incredibly relatablethat the soul-baring of Mace and Anthony makesone feel like an eavesdrop-per, privy to informationlikely to come only fromthe oldest of friends, and inthe most secure of places.

It slowly makes us rootfor the companions who,rather impulsively, decideto go to Baguio before go-ing home to their families,shortly after they reachManila. The candidness

works; cuteness naturally

ensues. Scenes like the two in a videoke joint, singing (off-key)Whitney Houston’s Where Do Broken Hearts Go—legally usedhere, by the way—are pre-dictable, but no less endearing.

Another thing that it doesright is focusing on these 20-somethings’ lives; they’re some-

what jaded, their early dreamsfaded or replaced by demands

of reality.Panganiban is the personifi-

cation of vulnerability and grief,tempered by De Guzman’s be-lievability as the stable, sup-

portive one. De Guzman gets todo much by being subtle. You’llbe a fan of both by film’s end, if

you aren’t already, mid-movie.For all its spotlight on dreary

life and treacherous love, thefilm has redeeming optimism. Itfits all that in one talky, painfulcatharsis of a movie, and forthat, those who relate to it havemuch to be thankful for.

Antoinette Jadaone’s That Thing Called Tadhana suc-ceeds in smartly telling that special tale, a relatableromantic comedy that often shifts into a tearjerker of epic proportions.
