Let’s Review

• What causes day and night?– The Earth’s rotation on its axis– The Earth’s revolution around the sun– The Sun’s rotation on its axis– The Sun’s revolution around the Earth

Let’s Review

• How long does it take the Earth to revolve around the sun?– 1 day– 1 week – 1 month– 1 year

Let’s Review

• What is Earth’s path as it revolves around the sun called?– Axis– Eclipse– Orbit– Rotation

Let’s Review

• What causes seasons on Earth?– The Earth gets closer to the sun– The sun gets closer to the Earth– The Earth is tilted on its axis– The Earth rotates

Let’s Review

• What event do the equinoxes mark?– Fall and spring– Winter and Summer– Day and Night

Let’s Review

• If the Northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun, the North is experiencing– Summer– Winter– Fall– Spring

Let’s Review

• The phase of the moon depends on:– Where you are standing on Earth– What the weather is like outside– How much of the sunlit side faces Earth

Today’s Goals!

• I can explain what causes an eclipse.

• I can compare solar and lunar eclipses.

Page 19: Today’s Agenda…3/3 Get your clickers Bellringer: Name the phases of the moon in order. Discuss Moon Log Review Notes on Eclipses.

Let’s see what you know…

• True or False– When the moon’s shadow hits Earth or Earth’s

shadow hits the moon, an eclipse occurs

Let’s see what you know…

• True or False– The darkest part of a moon’s shadow during an

eclipse is the penumbra

Let’s see what you know…

• True or False– Solar eclipses occur during a full moon

Let’s see what you know…

• True or False– A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is

between the sun and moon

Let’s see what you know…

• True or False– A lunar eclipse can be seen anywhere on Earth

that the moon is visible

Eclipses

• The sun, moon, and Earth do not usually line up in a straight line

• If this occurs a show can fall on the moon or Earth

• Most months the moon revolves around Earth without moving into Earth’s shadow or the moon’s shadow hitting Earth

Page 25: Today’s Agenda…3/3 Get your clickers Bellringer: Name the phases of the moon in order. Discuss Moon Log Review Notes on Eclipses.

Eclipses

• When the moon’s shadow hits Earth or Earth’s shadow hits the moon, an eclipse occurs

• There are two types of eclipses– Solar “sun”– Lunar “moon”

Page 26: Today’s Agenda…3/3 Get your clickers Bellringer: Name the phases of the moon in order. Discuss Moon Log Review Notes on Eclipses.

Solar Eclipses

• Happens during a new moon

• The moon passes between the sun and Earth

• The moon’s shadow hits Earth

Page 27: Today’s Agenda…3/3 Get your clickers Bellringer: Name the phases of the moon in order. Discuss Moon Log Review Notes on Eclipses.

Solar Eclipse

• The darkest part of the moon’s shadow is called the umbra– From this point the sun is completely blocked

by the moon– People on Earth experience total solar eclipse– The sky is dark and you can see the stars!

Page 28: Today’s Agenda…3/3 Get your clickers Bellringer: Name the phases of the moon in order. Discuss Moon Log Review Notes on Eclipses.

Total Solar Eclipse

Page 29: Today’s Agenda…3/3 Get your clickers Bellringer: Name the phases of the moon in order. Discuss Moon Log Review Notes on Eclipses.

Solar Eclipse

• The larger part of the moon’s shadow that is less dark is the penumbra– People on Earth see a partial solar eclipse

• It’s never safe to look directly at a solar eclipse!

Page 30: Today’s Agenda…3/3 Get your clickers Bellringer: Name the phases of the moon in order. Discuss Moon Log Review Notes on Eclipses.

Lunar Eclipse

• Occurs at a full moon

• The Earth is directly between the sun and moon

• The Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon

Homework

• Create a Venn diagram to compare solar and lunar eclipses.
