−Covers Config Database and Content Databases−Does NOT cover

− SSP− Search − User Profiles

9

Upgrade Experience• What’s New

− Upgrade preparation tools− Powershell upgrade command-lets− Visual upgrade− Downtime reduction via parallel upgrade pipelines

• What’s Changed?− Additional upgrade methods− Improved upgrade status logging and reporting− Improved read-only DB support

• What’s Gone?− Gradual upgrade− Side-by-side installation

• What’s NOT Supported− Direct upgrade to MSF/SP2010 from WSSv2/SPS2003− Upgrade < WSSv3 SP2

Agenda

Installation SharePoint Foundation

Upgrade Strategies and Scenario Walkthrough

11

SharePoint Foundation 2010• Software pre-requisites

− Automatically downloaded/installed with Internet connection

− Automatically installed from network share in isolated network− PrerequisiteInstaller.Argumen

ts.txt− Pre-requisites downloaded and

Upgrade Strategies and Scenario Walkthrough

15

Unsupported Upgrade Paths to SPF2010• Upgrade from a farm running WSS 3.0 earlier than

SP2

• Direct upgrade from a farm running WSS 2.0/SharePoint Server (SPS) 2003. − WSS 2.0/SPS2003 to WSS 3.0/MOSS2007 to

SPF2010/SP2010.

16

Upgrade Strategies

• In-Place: Upgrade components, settings and content in place− Pros

− Farm-wide settings preserved and upgraded.− Customizations already applied but may need to be upgraded

− Cons− Farm is off-line during entire upgrade process.− Content is upgraded in sequence− Limited rollback options

17

Upgrade Special Case – Single Server• WSS v3 Single Server Install

− Includes Windows Internal Database (no size limit)− SQL Server Embedded Edition (SSEE)

• SharePoint Foundation 2010 Single Server Install− Includes SQL Server 2008 Express (4 GB database limit)

• Upgrade Process− Enable RBS on new SQL Express Instance− Extract BLOBs from AllDocsStreams in old content database− Copy BLOBs to RBS on new SQL Express Instance− Backup/Shrink old content database− Copy new content database to new SQL Express Instance

18

SQL Server Embedded Edition Removal

• For single server install− Two instances of SQL

running after in-place upgrade

− SSEE and SQL 2008 Express

• SSEE can and should be removed

Upgrade Strategies

• Database Attach: Build new farm then attach content databases− Pros

− Can upgrade in parallel− Can consolidate farms

− Cons− Server and farm settings NOT upgraded− Customization must be reapplied/redeployed− Moving content over network can be time consuming− Need direct access to Database server

21

Upgrade Strategies

• Hybrid 1 – Read-Only Database− Provide read-only access to old farm while new farm performs

upgrade− Pros

− Allows for hardware upgrade − Minimizes downtime through read-only access− Can upgrade in parallel− Nice rollback option

− Cons− Server and farm settings not upgraded− Customizations must be reapplied/redeployed− Moving content over network can be time consuming− Need access to database server

22

Upgrade Strategies

• Hybrid 2 – Detached Content Databases− Detach content databases, perform in-place upgrade, then re-

attach content databases− Pros

− Farm-wide settings are preserved and upgraded− Customizations already applied but may need to be upgraded− Can upgrade in parallel

− Cons− Downtime while the in-place upgrade is in progress.
