CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. APRIL 27, 2014 TODAY’S READINGS ere not our hearts burning? (Luke 24:32) Great writers have a knack for conveying deep, lasting truths in just a few words. This is the kind of artistry that we find in today’s Gospel. In telling the story of two people who meet the Lord on the road to Emmaus, St. Luke also tells us about the transforming power of the Mass. Cleopas and another disciple were heading home sad because Jesus had been crucified (Luke 24:17-18). They still held out some hope because Mary Magdalene had told them about an empty tomb, but it doesn’t seem to have been enough for them. When Jesus met them on the road but concealed his identity, they shared their doubts with him. In response, he told them the story of salvation—and their hearts began to burn. Then at dinner, when Jesus blessed and broke the bread, “their eyes were opened and they recognized him” (24:31). With their faith restored, the disciples turned around and hurried back to Jerusalem so that they could tell the others what had happened. Over and over, we hear about people who have stopped going to Mass because they don’t feel that they get anything out of it. Often, however, this happens when the outer “form” of the Mass— the quality of the music, the appearance of the church, the various words and gestures of the liturgy—becomes more important than the inner “substance” of what is actually going on. Form is when we say, “I confess.” Substance is our experience of God washing us clean. Form is the lector proclaiming the read- ings. Substance is God’s word coming alive in our hearts. Form is our act of receiving Communion. Substance is our openness to God and his power to fill our hearts. Substance moves us to change our lives and to share the good news about Jesus with our neighbors. In short, form focuses more on what we do, but substance focuses on who we are meeting. “Lord, let me see you at Mass today. May I never settle for less than everything that you want to give me!” Taken from The Word Among Us, Easter 2014, Vol. 33, Number 5: Used with permission. HIGHLIGHTS

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY – The Second Sunday of Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday, established by Pope John Paul II on the day that he canonized Sister Faustina Kowalska in Rome (April 30, 2000). The special devotion to the divine mercy is based on the writings of Saint Faustina. On the day of his election as Pope, Benedict XVI spoke about the devotion of Pope John Paul II to the divine mercy, saying: We listen with joy to the proclamation of the year of

mercy… Jesus Christ is divine mercy in person: To find Christ means to

find the mercy of God… The day of vengeance and the year of favor

coincide in the paschal mystery, in Christ, dead and risen. This is the

vengeance of God: He himself, in the person of the Son, suffered for us.

The more we are touched by the mercy of the Lord, the more we are in

solidarity with his suffering, the more disposed we are to complete in

our flesh ‘what is lacking in Christ's afflictions’ (Colossians 1:24).

CELEBRATION OF CANONIZATIONS – On Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, the Church celebrates the canonizations of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II. Cardinal Wuerl will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving for the

Canonizations of Saints John XXIII and John Paul II at the Cathedral on Saturday, May 10 at 5:30pm. All are welcome. To commemorate in a particular way the elevation to sainthood of John Paul II, the Archdiocese of Washington has created a prayer card (right) based on a painting commissioned for our Archdiocesan seminary, now Saint John Paul II Seminary. MUSIC FOR TWO POPE SAINTS – On Saturday, May 3 at 7:30pm, The Catholic University of America Chamber Choir and University Singers will present in the Cathedral a concert on the occasion of the canonization of Blessed John XXIII and Blessed John Paul II, with Leo Nestor, conductor, and Joy-Leilani Garbutt and Sook Hyun Kim, organists. In addition to chanted Plainsong, music will include the works of Giovanni Gabrieli, Jacobus Handl, Hans Leo Hassler, G. P. da Palestrina, Tomás Luís de Victoria, Claudio Monteverdi, James MacMillan, Grayston Ives, and Leo Nestor. Come and enjoy an evening of sublime choral music from two of the finest academic choruses in our area. The concert is free and open to the public. Free-will offerings will be gratefully accepted.

CATHEDRAL CHOIR OF REGENSBURG (GERMANY) – The world-famous choir of boys and men of the Regensburg Cathedral will present a brief concert 15 minutes before the Saturday Vigil Mass on May 3, including the works of Victoria, Mendelsohn, Palestrina and Duruflé. They also will provide the musical ministry for the Mass, including a sung Kyrie and Agnus Dei by Orlando de Lassus. To make it a full evening of wonderful choral music, consider staying for the Catholic University Concert at 7:30 that evening (see above).

NEWS AND NOTES

THANK YOU FROM THE RECTOR – On behalf of the entire parish community, I want to express my sincere appreciation to the volunteers who decorated the Cathedral for Easter, the lectors, hospitality ministers, servers, Eucharistic ministers, musicians, sacristans, RCIA sponsors, parish staff, priests, deacons, and all who contributed time and talent to the Cathedral during Holy Week and Easter. Please be assured of my gratitude and best wishes for a very blessed Easter season. —Msgr. Jameson

COME—LET US ADORE HIM! – You are invited to the Cathedral for our monthly evening of Eucharistic Adoration this Monday, April 28 from 6 to 7pm. Our Dominican seminarian and deacon, Br. Gabriel Torretta, will give a brief reflection on a passage from Hebrews, below, with the theme of mercy and the Resurrection. Fr. Rafael will be available for confessions in English and Spanish during the hour.

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed

through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our

confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to

sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been

tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us confidently approach

the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely

help. (Hebrews 4:14-16) FIRST FRIDAY AND FIRST SATURDAY – First Friday Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on May 2

following the 12:10pm Mass until 5pm, in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, to the left of the sanctuary. All are welcome to come and adore Our Lord.

On Saturday, May 3 all are welcome to First Saturday Devotions after the 12:10pm Mass, followed by Hospitality in the West Conference Room.

HOSPITALITY SUNDAY – Join us for hospitality after the 8:30am, 10am, 11:30am and 1pm Masses on May 4! We will be outdoors if the weather cooperates; otherwise you will find us in the North Conference Room. There will be plenty of activities for children and snacks to tide you over until your next meal, as well as information on upcoming events and service opportunities at the Cathedral. Members of your Parish Council will be available. All are welcome—we hope to see you there! Interested in helping us with future events? Contact [email protected].

FAITH FORMATION

BOOK CLUB: ST. HILDEGARD OF BINGEN,

DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH – All are welcome to attend the next meeting of the Book Club on Monday, May 12 at 6:45pm in the West Conference Room. We will discuss St.

Hildegard of Bingen, Doctor of the Church: A

Spiritual Reader by Carmen Acevedo Butcher (Paraclete Press, 2013). This book includes an introduction to St. Hildegard’s life and era and includes selections from her songs, theological texts, liturgical music, and letters. On October 7, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI declared Hildegard a saint and only the fourth female Doctor of the Church. BECOMING CATHOLIC – Throughout the year, adults come forward seeking to learn about the Catholic faith. For those interested in learning about the Catholic faith or thinking about becoming Catholic, St. Matthew’s offers Inquiry, a casual, ongoing conversation about the Catholic faith. Inquiry is the first step in discerning one’s commitment to full initiation in the Catholic Church. Inquiry meets on the second Wednesday of the month, 6:30-7:30pm in the East Conference Room. The next Inquiry will be Wednesday, May 14. Contact: Heather Kinney at [email protected] .

It is a hassle-free, simple solution for today’s busy families. Sign up using the enrollment form on the other side or go online to www.faithdirect.net and use our parish code DC284 to enroll today!

How does Faith Direct work?

Faith Direct is a secure system that works directly with your bank or credit card–much the same as other direct payments you may have set up for utility bills or mortgage payments.

When do transactions take place? Transactions take place once per month on the 4th or the next business day. The total amount of your gifts for that current month (both offertory & second/special collections) will be debited in one monthly total. The Cathedral will receive the funds 4 business days later.

Can I stop, increase, or decrease my payment at any time? Yes, by calling Faith Direct at 1-866-507-8757 (toll free) by emailing [email protected], or by logging in to your account through www.faithdirect.net.

How does the Cathedral benefit from my participation with Faith Direct?

The Cathedral will see a substantial increase in net revenue, a decrease in administrative costs, and a clearer picture of cash flow for their needs.
