Hungary, located in the heart of Europe, is one of the oldest states in Central Europe. It has a pop-ulation of 10,044 million in an area of 93,030 km2. Budapest, the capital, is said to be one of themost beautiful European cities. Hungary is rich in thermal baths and spas, as well as cultural andnatural resources, including numerous World Heritage Sites, UNESCO Biosphere reserves, thesecond largest thermal lake in the world (Hévíz) and the largest lake in Europe, Balaton, whichmakes the country an important tourist destination. Hungary is also famous for its hospitality andcuisine (it is worthwhile to taste the reputed pörkölt or gulyás and the delicious lángos.) Hungaryis also reputed to host cultural events like Sziget Festival or Budapest Spring Festival. It is notonly the famous Tokaj and Villányi wines or the succesful festivals that bring people here, but alsothe highly developed Hungarian education of the highest standard, which is also indicated bythe number of its Nobel Prize laureates.

VISA

As Hungary is a member of the Schengen Area, citizens of EU and EEA Member States mayenter the country without a visa. Family members of citizens of EEA Member States may alsotravel to Hungary without a visa if they are in possession of a residence card issued for familymembers of EEA citizens or a residence permit issued by any Schengen Member State. For thatreason, visas and residence permits issued by one of the Schengen States are also valid in Hun-gary and visas issued by Hungarian representations abroad and residence permits issued byHungarian national authorities are also valid in the entire Schengen Area.

The Schengen visa and entry regulations are only applicable for a stay not exceeding 90 days.Rules for a long stay exceeding 90 days are laid down by the national laws and regulations ofthe member states respectively.

HEALTH CARE, INSURANCE

First aid and emergency medical care is free for residents, while the rest you will have to pay forit. So students are advised to obtain insurance themselves either in their home country or in Hun-gary. For those whose home country has a bilateral agreement with Hungary on health care, medical examinations are free of charge.

HIGHER EDUCATION IN HUNGARY

In Hungary, higher education institutions are the public and private/denominational universities(egyetemek) and colleges (fôiskolák) that are accredited and formally recognised by the state.The total number of students in the higher education system was 416000 in the previous academicyear. Hungary has 71 operating higher education institutions today. In 2010 five research andfive outstanding institutions have been selected as leading universities in Hungary.

Since 2006, all students entering higher education in Hungary have been studying in a 3-cyclesystem that consists of courses leading to a Bachelor later on to a Master’s degree and finally toa Ph.D. (doctoral) degree.

The first level of higher education is the 6-8-semester Bachelor degree programmes (BA, BSc),which only offers qualification in a single discipline. The first cycle of education offers a Bachelordegree and provides professional skills and knowledge that can be utilised in the labour market,in addition to the theoretical foundation necessary for continuing studies in the given disciplinein order to obtain a Master degree.

Following the introduction of the tiered training system, some faculties (e.g. Medicine, Law, Den-tistry, as well as a number of Arts Faculties) offer unified, 10-12 semester programmes, which arecompleted with the acquisition of a Master degree.

The Master degree programmes (MA, MSc) constitute the second level of higher education, of-fering Master level diplomas and professional qualifications. The exact conditions of applicationare defined by the higher education institutions. The duration of these programmes is 2-4 semes-ters (except for teacher training, which lasts for 5 semesters). Graduates can enter the labourmarket or apply to doctoral studies.

Part of the higher education system is the non-university higher vocational training, which is in-corporated in the system of the Bachelor programmes of the higher education institution, andprovides a non-university higher vocational qualification.

The third pilar of the 3-cycle system is the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), postgraduate academicdegree awarded by universities. This three-year-long programme includes specialized professionalcourses and authentic research activity. The PdD programme leads to a PhD thesis which has tobe defended by the PhD doctoral candidate so that the PhD award – the first scientific degree –can be achieved.

All the fields of science are covered by The Group of 11. The national percentage ofinternationalization is the highest at these universities, this means the highest numbers of incomingand outgoing researchers, lecturers and students. This well organized international life ensuresa multicultural atmosphere at every institution. The universities of the group have several agree-ments between each other and with other partner universities in Europe (and on every continent)this way providing uncountable number of joint (and double) degrees. Students studying at oneof the universities of the group have the opportunity to take part in international projects and re-search. The University of Debrecen, one of the five leading research universities, is the oldest Hungarian in-stitution of higher education in continuous operation based in the same city.
