No batteries No problemBill Bannisterrsquos toys are powered by imagination

effects flashing lights or electronic controlsOr batteriesYet they can pull a load of lumber haul coal or

move passengersmdashwith the help of a childrsquos imagina-tion

Working in a small shop at his home in JacksonBannister designs and builds ldquoPapa Billrsquosrdquo all-woodtoys His work is distinguished by its fine workman-ship durability and natural wood colors

A single toy may be made of a dozen different kindsof wood carefully selected for their color and grainBannister shuns wood stains preferring clearpolyurethane and lots of sanding to produce smoothshiny finishes that enhance the natural colors and iri-descence of the wood

Bannisterrsquos toys seem destined for display But heinsists he builds them to endure the rough play ofyoungsters These are hands-on toys that can survive atleast one childhood and maybe more

ldquoSometimes itrsquos hard to convince customers they aremeant for kidsrdquo Bannister said

Bannister ventured into woodworking about 12years ago when he built his first piece of furniture Hisinspiration was the discovery of Norm Abramrsquos ldquoTheNew Yankee Workshoprdquo an instructional woodwork-ing show on public television ldquoFor three months or soI watched every episode Then I went out and bought

someshop tools

ldquoI ordered abutlerrsquos tray table kitfrom Abrams but thisis not the first thingyou need to start withrdquohe said with a wry smile

Bannister finished thetable with its hinged topand found he enjoyed

the process as much as the results Soon he was devot-ing off-hours from his job as a transportation refrigera-tion mechanic to building furniture of his own designldquoIf I wasnrsquot at work I was in my shoprdquo

The home he shares with his wife Marsha is filledwith furniture Bannister has built through the years

His toy making was prompted by the births of thecouplersquos five grandchildren Bannister admits his firstproject was almost his last an elaborately detailed bull-dozer with a low-boy trailer built from plans Its con-struction was painstaking Each segment of the bulldoz-errsquos two tracks was individually crafted for an exact fit

Yet Bannister persisted Now he builds World War Ibiplanes helicopters trains Le Mans-style race carsConestoga and buckboard wagons antique cars andtrucks pull toys and games

Bannister continually improves his designs based on

his own grandchildrenrsquos experiences in playing withthem

ldquoWhatrsquos really fun is to have a child come up andgrab one of the race cars or an airplane They just fallin love with it and want to play with it then andthererdquo Bannister said

The magic of these handmade toys works on grown-ups too Few can resist trying out the cricket pull toy

Bannister enjoys the challenge of designing so hewelcomes custom orders For one customer hedesigned a foot-long wind surfer with a tall cypress sailand three rudders

For a customer wanting a gift for a law enforcementofficer Bannister recreated the 1935 Ford black-and-white police cruiser in wood It is the only toy he hasever painted ldquoI told them itrsquos very hard for me topaint thisrdquo he said with a laugh

Bannister is obsessed with wood grain It was thebeauty of perfectly aligned wood grain in hand-builtfurniture that first sparked his interest in woodwork-ing In building toys he strives to make even thesmallest joins invisible by carefully aligning the grainof neighboring pieces of wood

Or he may use a wood with a prominent grainsuch as zebrawood to create decorative effects likestripes on car seats

In 2010 Bannister became an exhibiting memberof the Craftsmenrsquos Guild of Mississippi The guildawards membership only to artisans whose workmeets high standards for artistry and craftsmanship

Now through Dec 27 Papa Billrsquos toys are beingfeatured once again in an art exhibit at the Mississip-

pi Library Commission in Jackson Last yearrsquos MLCshow nearly sold out to his surprise That left himscrambling to build more toys for his booth at theCraftsmenrsquos Guildrsquos Chimneyville Crafts Festivalalso in December ldquoI went into panic mode but Imanaged to get about 40 boxes of toys made forChimneyville I sold all but one boxrdquo he said

After this yearrsquos Chimneyville show Bannisterrsquospace will slow a bit Winter is the time to pondernew toy designs ldquoIrsquoll sit out there in the shop andput down ideas Irsquove had during the year Then Irsquollstart experimenting to see how they lookrdquo

Toy sales have allowed Bannister to scale back hisemployment to a part-time job at a local homeimprovement store so he can spend more time work-ing in his wood shop

extremely low water might not presentthe best conditions for the towboatindustry it is excellent for relic huntingAnd this has been a banner season forfinding ice-age fossils along what wouldnormally have been the submergedbanks of the Mississippi RiverI was in Greenville a few weekends

ago for the first annual Delta TamaleFestival and dropped into Jimrsquos Cafeacute

The day before Christmas of 2000Roy opened the back door and there satMack His eyes were saying would yougive me one more chance

And we did Roy and I loved him andhe loved us for 12 years Below I have

havent been up to writ-ing this column becauseit is an emotional topicfor Roy and me I finallyasked him to tell mefrom his heart what

Mack our Australian sheep dog com-monly called a blue heeler meant tohim Mack was Roys outdoor compan-ion

It was a tough task since Mr Royhasnrsquot been able to talk about Mack sincehe passed away over a month ago Thosewho have a special love for their animalswill understand

It all began in 2000 just beforeThanksgiving In fact you may rememberI wrote a column called ldquoA Man and HisDogrdquo soon after Mack settled in with usI included it in my book The dog cameto us in poor condition He appeared tohave been hit by a car Roy took him toour local veterinarian and asked him tofix the dog up and find him a goodhome

The tide changed when the vet saidthat he was a good dog a blue heelerand was about 2 years old He said theheeler could have fallen out of a truckThe vet put a collar and tag on him Somy partner brought him back home Onthe way he said to the dog ldquoI think youlook like a Mackrdquo That name stuck

Mack wasnrsquot just a dog he was one ofmy best friends we had a special bondand he taught me some important les-sons about life He taught me by his loy-alty and love that friends and family areso important Even when they donrsquot actthe way we think they should we needto be patient loyal and loving On dayswhen I thought I was too busy to spendtime with Mack he would still look atme and grin (he could truly grin from earto ear) and wag that stub of a tail

He taught me that everyone needs ajob to do that they want to do it proper-ly and need to be appreciated for theirwork Since I had sold my cows beforeMack came to live with us he took onthe task of taking care of our cats andkept an eye on us He tried his best tokeep us safe The cats adored Mack eventhough he would scold them if they gotout of line They are still grieving hisdeath as we are

He was unselfish not jealous of any-one or other animals who passed throughour lives Over the 12 years Mack waswith us we kept an inside dog Mackloved each of these pets (Dixie Belle andSugar) and would greet them everymorning with a kiss Wouldnrsquot it bewonderful if we humans had no jealousyor envy of other people

The loss of Mack has also made me

more aware of how hard our pets love usThey donrsquot expect much but a few kindwords and a few loving pats every dayThat means a lot to them

When we fed Mack he never took abite before he looked directly at us Hewaited for us to say ldquoThatrsquos Mackrsquos din-nerrdquo before he began eating I alsothought he was thanking us before heate

We miss you Mack and I know with-out a doubt that when we get to heavenand see the Rainbow Bridge you will bestanding there with a grin from ear toear Then you will give us several loudbarks to say ldquoIsnrsquot this greatwe can betogether for eternityrdquo

The cats seemed to adore Mack even though hisblue heelerrsquos herding instinct was to keep them inline

Consider planting low to high like ina stadium This will allow butterflies toaccess all of the flowers and let you sit inthe front row to watch the action

always sleep best in a tentFew there are or so itseems who share this possi-bly misplacedenthusiasm butfor me there has

never been any question Ialways sleep best in a tent

Why that is so I cannotsay In fact I am not com-pletely sure Perhaps the rea-son trails back to someBedouin spirit of beingmobile or some Bohemianpropensity to be somethingor someone who shuns con-formity Could be but these traitsappear a bit radical for me You see Iam fully domesticated in most of lifeBut there remains a strong urging thatplaces me in a tent many nights in anygiven year Not as often as I would likeat times but these wilderness wander-ings are numerous A tent is home dur-ing such sojourns

My infatuation with tents and othersimilar canvas structures goes back tochildhood I fashioned overhead con-trivances from practically anything Icould find lying around And I slept insome of these I actually got my first realtent when I was 12 It was a pyramid rigwith a big flap door that could bestretched into a canopy This unit servedme well and was regularly packed withsquirming and excited young boyscamping in the pasture behind our barn

Grand evenings these were with uscurled under quilts dragged from the

house the sweet aroma of grass driftingup to comfort us That grass served asour mattress I have not been without at

least one tent sinceWhen I look into this cap-

tivating lure I have for tentsand attempt to analyze it tosome degree of satisfactionthis in an effort to confirmthat I possess a measure ofsanity I must admit to amuch-maligned need forescape There are scoffers atsuch thinking and practiceyou know I simply listen qui-etly to them and then go

spend a night in my tent And do I come away from these men-

tal ramblings and searches for purposeconvinced that I am indeed saneCertainly I am more persuaded eachtime I do so And that generates evenmore desire to set up a tent

There are also sensory stimuli com-mon to tent camping that are far moreconcrete than some obscure need Moretangible if you will There is beauty thiscoming in large part through symmetryWhen I set up camp or more appropri-ately when several of us similarly afflict-ed individuals set up camp we strive forsymmetry organization No hodge-podge of scattered items everything hasa place And all looks pretty much thesame white canvas tents and cookcanopies Each in its designated spotevenly spaced from another of its kindAll supported by peeled pine poles notaluminum or fiberglass

Thereare black-smith-made firetools on which hang bucketsand pots these tools and theblacksmithing courtesy of my friendNeal Brown There are also ornatemasts made by that same blacksmiththat hold candle and oil lanterns Andwhile the odd folding chair or table froma big-box store can be seen now andagain the gradual switch to handmadeoak furniture and cypress cook boxes isnear complete This is all quiet naturalbeauty that refreshes the battered spiritlike nothing else can

And then there are the sounds Nobetter way can be found to listen to acricket chirp or an owl hoot or a coyoteyap Some of these such as the chirpingcricket may be only inches away fromthe ear that hears it But it is stillremoved by a canvas wall and holds nothreat of taking up residence in yoursleeping bag These sounds all commonto night lull me off to a pleasant andrelaxing state that is too often hard toacquire otherwise

Come daylight the sounds changeBut they are abundant just the same asquirrel barking or shaking a limb loos-ing dew drops that spat gently onto the

canvas dwelling a turkey gobbling in thedistance a deer blowing and stamping indisgust at the hulking white edifice andthe noxious smell of humanity wildgeese on a morning sun en route tosome faraway environ the brisk sharpchirp of a cardinal in search of breakfastA tent is perfect for absorbing andenjoying such sounds

Perhaps these are some of the reasonsI remain enamored of tents They aregood for the spirit Day nightmdasheach isequally enchanting And I am once againreminded that I always sleep best in atent

Melt butter in a dish about 7 by 11 inches Mix Jour sugar milk and vanilla pouron top of butter Do not stir Sprinkle brown sugar and pecans on top Do not stirPour hot water on top Bake at 350 F for 35 minutes

Raspberry Spinach Salad4 cups fresh baby spinach torn4 green onions chopped12 cup pecans chopped6 oz frozen raspberries4 oz feta cheese

Dressing14 canola oil13 cup raspberry vinegar3 Tbsp raspberry All Fruit preserves14 cup sugar

Combine spinach onions pecans raspberries and feta cheese cover and chillCombine dressing ingredients and chill Pour dressing over salad just before serving

Heavenly Hot Chocolate Mix5 cups nonfat dry milk powder2 cups confectionersrsquo sugar2 cups instant chocolate drink mix1 cup powdered nondairy creamer

1 cup malted milk powder1 cup chocolate malted milk powder12 cup baking cocoa

Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container To serve put 13 cupmix into a mug and add 34 cup hot water stir until blended Dry mix can bestored for about 2 months

Beat egg white until stiH Fold in brown sugar vanilla and pecans Spread on cookiesheet and bake at 300 F for 15-20 minutes

Wild Rice and Turkey Casserole1 cup white rice cooked1 cup wild rice cooked2 cups diced turkey breast2 cups (8 oz) shredded Monterey Jack

cheese12 oz evaporated milk

12 cup chopped red bell pepper12 cup chopped green bell pepper2 eggs beaten12 tsp salt and pepper1 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley

Preheat oven to 350 F Prepare a 8-by-12-inch or 2-quart baking dish with cookingspray Combine rices and spread evenly over bottom of dish In a large bowl com-bine turkey cheese milk bell peppers eggs salt and pepper Spoon over rice Bake45-55 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean and top is lightlybrowned Sprinkle with parsley Let stand 5 minutes before servingNote Very good served as a side dish with turkey Look for frozen or canned

7e store features an old-fashioned soda fountainthat dishes out Blue Bell ice cream and other fooditems including its famous Slugburger

7e Slugburger contains a deep-fried pork pattyserved on a hamburger bun Itrsquos been around sincethe storersquos earliest days and originally cost 5 centsBack then ldquoslugrdquo was a slang term for a nickel andspawned the burgerrsquosname

Because theSlugburger is such asymbol of the store andthe city Corinth cele-brates each July withthe Slugburger FestivalLive outdoor musicalconcerts and a carnivalentertain crowds 7ispast summer markedthe eventrsquos 25th year

Ice cream and burg-ers arenrsquot the only drawto Borroumrsquos Routinerounds of morning cof-fee and conversationpull in patrons whowant to know aboutanything brewing inCorinth

As the name impliesit is 6rst and foremost apharmacy Dr AndrewJackson Borroum opened thestore 1865 He had served as aphysician in the Confederate Armyduring the Civil War and treated Union sol-diers after they took him captive

Upon his release he traveled by horsebacktoward his hometown of Oxford but stopped inCorinth to visit a doctor he knew 7at doctor con-vinced Borroum to remain in Corinth to practice

medicine He stayedIn his physician practice he found it necessary to

make and dispense medicines 7at evolved into theopening of the drug store which is now operated bythe seventh generation of Borroums

AndrewJackson Borroumrsquosportrait hangs beside theportraits of two other family drug-gists and these paintings are showcasedon a wall amidst other historical artifacts

Four members of the Borroum lineage have beenpharmacists including the current owner CamilleMitchell who operates the store with her son LexMitchell and his wife Debbie
