Students challenged to lead now and into futureHow does one become a leader What are the qualities of an effective leader Just whatdefines leadership

A group of 68 Mississippi high school juniors found theanswers to these and other leadership-related questions atthe 27th annual Electric Power Associations of MississippiYouth Leadership Workshop Feb 27 - March 1 in Jack-son

The hands-on workshop brought together studentsfrom schools across the state to compete in team-buildingexercises meet their legislators and tour the state Capitol

ldquoOur program emphasizes the important role our youngpeople have in their schools and communities and the

importance of using their skills to make a dierencetodayrdquo said Ron Stewart coordinator of the statewide pro-gram ldquo=ese young people are ready and willing to serveItrsquos our job to challenge them and then empower themwith the appropriate resources and proper trainingldquoWe want to inspire them to believe in themselves and

to use good work ethics to accomplish their goals It alsomakes them realize that in order to be a good leader youhave to be a good personmdashincluding making the rightdecisions and doing things to beneltt othersrdquo Stewart said=e workshop oered the young people an opportunity

to interact with other students likewise interested in fulltll-ing a leadership position and serving their communityStewart emphasized the program is built around using the

cooperative philosophy working together to accomplishyour mission ldquoI am extremely proud of our 2013 partici-pantsrdquo Stewart said ldquo=ey are prepared and excited toserve as leadersrdquo

Lt Gov Tate Reeves in a breakfast speech to thegroup encouraged the students to set goals and work hardto achieve them

The students earned the expense-paid trip to the work-shop in a competitive selection process sponsored by theirlocal electric power association

tive leaders from across the country to meetshare ideas and give direction to our nationalassociation on key issues aEecting electric co-opsOne of the many speakers was Erskine

Bowles who served as Bill Clintonrsquos chief ofstaE and served as co-chair of PresidentObamarsquos National Commission on FiscalResponsibility and ReformMr Bowles who receives many invitations

to speak said he was addressing the co-opsbecause he wanted to make sure his message ofhow to Fx our national crisis got to Main StreetAmerica and he couldnrsquot think of anyone betterto deliver it than electric co-op leaders acrossthe countryAs I listened to his presentation I thought

his views of the Fve problems the USA mustaddress were interesting and worth sharing withour readers Here are his viewpoints1 Health care Ie USA spends two times asmuch on health care as other countries but canonly muster ratings from 25th to 50th Ie newhealth care law is going to lead to cost shiftswithin the industry higher taxes and higherinsurance rates2 National defense Ie USA spends more ondefense than the next 17 countries combined(Iis includes China Russia Great BritainFrance and Germany) We have to quit beingthe police oHcer of the world In fact MrBowles pointed out the chairman of the JointChiefs has identiFed that our greatest nationalsecurity threat is not terrorist but our evergrowing deFcits To go to war with China wewould Frst have to borrow money from them3 Tax code It is stupid ineHcient and makes

us globally uncompetitive Ie USA netted $13trillion in income taxes last year4 Social security Over the next decade socialsecurity will run a $900 billion cash deFcit(more paid out than taken in) If some action isnot taken quickly the system will be broke by2031 or sooner When FDR started the pro-gram you had to be 65 years of age to drawIe average life expectancy was 62 Today youcan draw at 62 and you likely will live to 79Iat is not sustainable5 Compound interest Ie USA spends $230billion just on our interest payments and thatrsquoslow in this low-rate environment If rates werejust average that number would jump to $650billion So all you folks with CDs earning zipnow you know why the Federal Reserve is hold-ing rates at zeroMr Bowles went on to say that we cannot

tax our way out of this Taxes will not make upfor the changing demographics of the countrynor can they control health care cost We alsocannot ldquocutrdquo our way out of these problemssuch cuts would be devastating to our fragileeconomy Mr Bowles did predict sequestrationwould occur (he was correct) and that it wouldcost the country roughly 750000 jobs in 2013If you would like more information visit his

moved here because of the trail systemrdquosaid Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGeewhose city just opened a trailhead pavil-ion for its multi-use nonmotorized trailsystemRidgeland Greenwood Tunica and

West Point are among the Mississippicities who have (or are building) trailsfor non-motorized use and in somecases horseback ridingIn northeast Mississippi municipal

and county governments formed a recre-

ational district to develop a Rails-to-Trails recreational project spanning threecountiesHere are some highlights from these

trail projects

bull As Greenwoodrsquos new Yazoo RiverTrail nears completion the Delta Gar-den Club is partnering with the city andother volunteers to establish a butterFygarden of native plants and a monarchbutterFy ldquowaystationrdquo at the trail sitenear downtown Greenwood A waysta-tion is a place that provides naturalhabitat for monarch migration andreproductionldquoAfter seeing the work the City of

mass of trees planted there by theCCC duringthe GreatDepressionback in the1930s Therewere so manytrees that asan eighthgrader on afield trip toVicksburg inthe 1960s Iwonderedhow in theworld they ever managed to have awar there You couldnrsquot see 10 feet infront of your face much less get a shotat anybodyProbably one of the most promi-

nent places where the deforestationhas occurred is shortly after you enterthe tour road Beyond a few twists andturns you round a rather sharp left theother side of a little rise When theroad opens up again before you is awonderful vista of rising hills and gul-lies crowned by the magnificentIllinois Memorial a round domedbuilding modeled after the Pantheon

It took quite a war to purchase all of this peacefulness The imposing IllinoisMemorial is flanked with a survivor of the Siege of Vicksburg the Shirley House in

in Rome about a half-mile awayBut sitting next to the Illinois

Memorial is a house that at first mayseem out of place in a military parkAnd had it met the same fate as itsneighbors it wouldnrsquot be hereOne hundred fifty years ago this

spring during the Civil War UnionGen Grant trapped Confederate GenPemberton in Vicksburg and laid siegeto the city eventually starving out theConfederates As the Confederatesrushed into Vicksburg time was of theessence because the Union troops wereright behind themOne of the orders given by the

Confederate commanders was to burnall the houses out where the battle lineswere likely to end up so that the Unioncould get no use or shelter from themThe other homes around the ShirleyHouse had already been torched andthis one was about to go The only thingthat saved it was Adeline Shirley wife ofJudge James Shirley owners of thehome who begged the soldier sent toburn it not to do so Just as he was start-ing to set it ablaze anyway the Unionarmy topped the rise to the east Thesoldier ran away and the house wassavedWell it may have been saved but it

was never lived in again After beingcaught in the crossfire for 47 days dur-ing the siege the house was pretty muchtorn up The Union army used it as a

smallpox hospital for a short while afterthe fighting ended After that the housewas deserted and left to the elementsBut when plans for the Vicksburg

Park were under way Alice Shirley oneof the Shirley children donated thehouse to the War Department for inclu-sion in the park She stipulated that thehouse be restored to the way it lookedbefore the war and that her parentsrsquobodies be moved from the VicksburgCemetery to graves in the backyard Itwas and they wereThe Shirley House is rarely open for

tours Just not enough staff for thatHowever chances are you may catch itopen more often over the next few weeksas the park observes the 150th anniver-sary of the siege that took place fromMay until July 1863 with special eventsincluding a big reenactment of one ofthe battles set for Memorial Day week-endThe Shirley House was a serene coun-

try estate before the war Originally itwas called Wexford Lodge Now 150years later it is still in a serene settingonly now it has a model of the Pantheonin its side yard

While other homes blazed ShirleyHouse survived due to stroke of luck

for answering such a perplexing probeare remarkably difficult to formulateThere simply are too many variables

Age is one cause for this somewhatmisplaced longing Years forward tend todim the truth of years past and we maywish things could be as they were in thegood old days

There is meritin such thinkingYesterday was atime of simplici-ty Today how-ever is filledwith complexityThat could holdtrue regardless ofthe era for the19th century waslikely more com-plex than the 18th particularly for thosewhose lives spanned some of both Andthe 20th century was increasingly morecomplex than the 19th and so on

You I am sure grasp the process hereoutlined So it is not fully unnatural todesire a simple less hectic world But welive in the world of today and perhaps

tomorrow not in yesterday Still weache and wonder for much of what hasslipped past many times unnoticed untilit no longer exists

Age aside there is still a powerful lureassociated with the past It is evidencedin those faryounger thanI whobecome curi-ous aboutpeople of thepast and thelives theylived

On arecentSaturday evening I was privileged topresent my 18th century program for alarge group at Moselle Baptist Church inJones County Among the 500 or sothere a great many were young peo-plemdashchildren teens young adults Alllistened intently They fondled long-hunter shirts and a wool capote and acanvas greatcoat and forged knives andcopper corn boilers and buckskin moc-casins and a flintlock rifle They wereenthralled by a flint-and-steel fire kit

They touched a heavy wool blanketrolled onto a tump line a system andproduct exactly like that used by suchpersonalities as Daniel Boone in 1770

They admired my battered andstained leggings over canvas knee breech-es both now showing extensive wearfrom a decade of heavy use

More recently I set up and tended abooth for Primitive Archer magazine atthe Pre-Spring Arrow Fling at TannehillState Historical Park near BirminghamAgain there were hundreds in atten-dance many of them youngsters andmost shooting the target ranges Othersjust curious

This is a traditional-only gatheringand some truly impressive glass-and-wood recurves were in use these trueworks of art But there was also anincreasing number of all-wood bows invarious styles another step back in time

My own Osage and bamboo longbowbacked with copperheads coupled witha Plains-Style leather quiver decorated

with feathers and beads and holdingcedar arrows gave pause for each passer-by to stop and stare Wonderment filledtheir eyes and many had to ask how itperformed Quite wonderfully I mustsay Remember Native Americans fedentire villages with the sweet meat ofbison taken with such gear

Events such as these two mentionedconvince me more completely each timeI attend them that there is somethinginherent in many that prompts them toexplore the past Why and what I stilldonrsquot know for sure

But for me it is the reward of beingmore closely in touch with self and theenvironment It is the requirement that Irely more on myself and my companionsthan on technology and gadgetry It isthe realization that I can be content withvery little can live a full life minus theexternal stimuli of obnoxious noise andthe latest contrivances touted by adver-tising as essential

It is reaching the experienced conclu-sion that had I been one from the past Icould have as they did survived thenormal and regular hardships of a diffi-cult but simple life Plus it is all funthis playing the Old Days game

And these are all ample justificationto take leave of today and step back toyesterday from time to time

Service Availability Index (ASAI)EMEPArsquos reliability is9996 per-cent This issomethingwersquore proudof consideringelectricity is a24-hour-a-daycommodity Of course wersquore workinghard to reduce even those brief interruptions increase our service reliability and control costs through

innovative technologyThose cell phones I mentioned earlier Nearly a third

of all US households have four electronic devices suchas cell phones plugged in and charging according to theResidential Energy Consumption Survey by the USEnergy Information Administration In the past 30years the amount of residential electricity used by appli-ances and electronics has increased from 17 percent to31 percent More homes than ever use major appliancesand central air conditioning Digital video recorders(DVRs) computers and multiple televisions havebecome universal Clearly our appetite for electricity shows no signs of

Finding the values ofElectricity

You may have noticed in recent newsthat Mississippi Power Companyobtained approval to raise its retail ratesdue to the cost of construction of its lignite generating plant in KemperCounty The rates Mississippi Powercharges EMEPA for wholesale power arealso increasingBeginning with bills received on or

after May 1 EMEPA members inLauderdale Clarke Newton Wayne andJasper counties will see a retail rateincrease This increase is approximately93 percent or an average bill increase ofapproximately $1080 per month per1000 kWh The rate increase is due tothe construction cost of MississippiPowerrsquos lignite plant As a result of theplant Mississippi Power has increasedboth retail rates to their customers andwholesale rates to EMEPA and other

systems purchasing from MississippiPowerIn order to ensure our members pay

no more than the Federal EnergyRegulatory Commission (FERC)approves EMEPA challenged the rateincrease through the FERC approvalprocess in Washington DC We willcontinue to insist that Mississippi Powerprove all cost increases comply withFERC requirements In other cost controlling efforts

EMEPA has taken advantage of histori-cally low interest rates to refinanceremaining debt on 5531 miles of line toreduce costs EMEPA has also refinedplanning models to ensure we havecapacity to continue providing safe reli-able electric service to more than 36900meters without undue rate burden tomembers

The Electric Power Associations ofMississippi held the 27th annualYouth Leadership Workshop Feb27-March 1 bringing together 68 ofMississippirsquos brightest studentleaders At this workshop some ofMississippirsquos top high school jun-iors learn about the keys to suc-cess focusing on leadershipdevelopment future advance-ment opportunities and theimportance of making smartdecisions

In a deep bowl combine water soy sauce oil and lemon-pepper seasoning Putpork chops in a gallon resealable plastic bag and pour soy sauce mixture overchops Marinate in refrigerator for 2 hours or up to overnight Remove chops frombag and grill turning often and brushing with the leftover marinade

Vicksburg siege induced a turning pointin the Civil War an event richlystitched into the historical tapestry ofthis Mississippi River cityDescendants of both the blue and

the gray will bow heads and join handsthis year to memorialize lives sacrificedon these and on other war groundsSesquicentennial Civil War events areoccurring nationally in states where bat-tles took place In Vicksburg thoseevents are slated in April May and July The first one is set April 5-7 and is

a heritage fair It will be similar to thetent fairs that traveled the South andMidwest in the 1800s and offeredmusical entertainment craft exhibitsdances and theatrical showsFree concerts the rededication of

the Iowa state monument and aparade are among the highlights of theMemorial Day weekend activities inMayConcert performances by the US

Navy Band Mississippi SymphonyOrchestra and Jackson MassCommunity Choir are scheduled thatweekend as well as a single song per-formance by celebrity guest TraceAdkins actor and country music artistA parade and wreath laying ceremonyare planned for May 27 MemorialDayThe Vicksburg park features memo-

rials from each of the states that suf-fered casualties during the warrsquos

Vicksburg Campaign A few years agoIowarsquos state legislature appropriatedfunds to restore the monument that hadbeen commissioned in 1904 and hadbecome worn through the years Therestored memorial will be rededicated ina ceremony with the governors of Iowaand Mississippi and a contingent of Iowacitizens on Saturday May 25Memorial Day events are expected to

draw the largest crowd amongVicksburgrsquos three sesquicentennial hap-penings That holiday has been designat-ed as the commemoration of the siegeRick Martin chief of park operations

said because Vicksburg sits halfwaybetween Atlanta and Dallas he expectstravelers to make Vicksburg NationalMilitary Park a destinationldquoTen thousand people a day during

that time period is not unrealisticrdquoMartin saidThe Shiloh Sesquicentennial last year

drew 150000 spectators to northMississippi throughout an eight-day peri-od However part of that draw includeda re-enactmentVicksburgrsquos July activities will involve

the placement of approximately 20000luminarias throughout the parkLuminarias will be positioned at eachstate monument with one luminaria rep-resenting each casualty for that state Forexample Illinois lost 2400 soldiers in thebattle and 2400 luminarias will be placedat the Illinois monument That event willtake place on the night of July 3

commemorates 150 years of civil war history

AAA Traveler magazine namedVicksburg one of the top 13 places inthe world to visit in 2013 Those whocanrsquot attend the 150th anniversaryevents may want to explore it at othertimes Park officials suggest viewing thepark by automobile The 16-mile driv-ing tour takes about two hours and visi-tors can stop to walk closer to monu-ments for photographs There are twodesignated picnic areas along the routeAdmission to the park is $8 per vehicle

RedbudsMississippi has many flowering native

trees and one that gets its fair share ofattention this time of year is the redbudThese trees flower early in the springbefore most other trees have started toleaf out after their winter naps

Although most flowering trees nativeto Mississippi tend to be understory treesthat can be hidden by bigger trees andtheir foliage itrsquos common around thestate to see a redbud framed or silhouet-ted by leafless hardwoods

Redbud is a readily adaptable speciesthat can tolerate many different soil andclimatic conditions Redbuds are rare inthe coastal counties where they mostoften are planted as part of an ornamen-tal landscape They are more commonnorth of a line drawn throughHattiesburg Travelling north you canfirst find redbuds growing in the swalesaround creeks and then later theybecome more common on flatter land

Redbud flowers are gorgeous in thespring Colors range from light clear

Foliage emerges afterthe flowering is finished almostas if the leaves do not want tointerfere with the pink showLeaves are glossy green inthe summer and heart-shaped reaching 3 to5 inches acrossUnfortunately there is little potential forfall color although some yellow-coloredleaves may appear in the fall sometimes

For best growth place redbuds asunderstory trees Planting sites with par-tial to full shade are probably best butIrsquove seen several splendid specimensbeing grown out in the full sun

Some selections have maroon-coloredleaves that are pretty close to Bulldogmaroon One of the best selections Iwould pick for the landscape is ForestPansy This redbudrsquos heart-shaped pur-ple-maroon foliage has outstanding colorwhen it receives morning sun

A great question Irsquove received recentlyconcerns the name ldquoIf the flowers are

pink why is it called redbudrdquoIt became readily apparent to me

where the redbudrsquos name came from as Ilooked at flowers buds beginning toopen The outer layer of bud scales pro-tecting the developing flower is a deepred color

Redbud is a good choice for adding apunch of spring color to your landscapeas a specimen or in a shrub border

Walter Brown decided they needed alarger wagon for their farm in Agricolaso it was traded for a big wheel wagonThe larger wagon had belonged toCarley Davis who owned a sawmill atthe edge of Jackson County Randyremembers picking corn in the big wheelwagon

was bothering RandyBrown a retiredVocational Shop schoolteacher by talking to himas he worked inside our

house He has awesome familystories Especiallyone about a wagon

I (over a 100 years old) that was lost andfound Randy is an excellent carpenter Our

house is 43 years old so we do a fix-upevery few years to keep it updated andstanding up Randyrsquos brother Alanteams up with him to repair or remodel

house projects for folks in GeorgeCounty Randy didnrsquot let his work interfere

with talking and answering my ques-tions He and his wife Amanda haveone son Andrew and a large extendedfamily Their beautiful old-fashioned

The long-lost wagon used in 1913 to bring their forebears to George County from the Meridian area has returned to the Brown family Fromleft are wagon owners Brown family members Kent Charles Walter Randy and Alan Mounted on the back of the old wagon is a corn sheller

April 2013 Today in Mississippi 21The Brown family lost track of the

wagon that brought their family toAgricola They kept the big wheel wagonstored in a barn at Alan and Randyrsquosgranddaddyrsquos old place WhenHurricane Frederic blew the barn downin 1979 it almost destroyed the wagon Elton Randyrsquos daddy wanted to cut

it up for firewood but Randy talkedhim out of it Since he taught shop at

East CentralHigh SchoolRandy took it toschool andwhile his stu-dents worked ontheir projectshe restored thebig wheelwagon But healways longed toknow what hap-pened to their

familyrsquos original wagonOne of Randyrsquos students a young

boy named Roger Emerson asked aboutthe big wagon he was restoring SoRandy told him the story including thestory of the wagon that brought his fam-ily to AgricolaRoger told Randy he knew who had

that original wagon where it was andthat he would inherit it someday Randytold him if you ever decide to sell thewagon I want to buy itThis went on for 25 to 30 years Each

time he saw Roger Randy would askabout the wagon and Roger would tellhim it was in good shape and used onlyat Old Fashioned Day in HurleyAbout a year ago Rogerrsquos 91-year-old

mother decided to sell the originalBrown wagon to a neighbor but Rogerremembered the promise he made toRandy years before I call it a covenant Like God made

with His people Herersquos the rest of the saga The

wagon was purchased by cousins Kentand Charles Walter Brown and Randyand Alan for $600 No refurbishmentwas needed on the Cyprus wagon Itrsquos ingreat condition and a beauty Not only do they now have the two

wagons but they have a book written bymembers of the Brown family 1880 to2013 the family records of birth anddeaths and stories by family membersthat will make you laugh out loud Wayne Brown retired Southern

District highway commissioner wrote69 stories for the book Rev Dr BryceEvans and other friends have poems andother good tales incorporated in theirldquohome-stylerdquo book called ldquoBrown Bookof Talesrdquo A wonderful read The Browns are planning a 100-year

A group of 68 Mississippi high school juniors found theanswers to these and other leadership-related questions atthe 27th annual Electric Power Associations of MississippiYouth Leadership Workshop Feb 27 - March 1 in Jack-son

The hands-on workshop brought together studentsfrom schools across the state to compete in team-buildingexercises meet their legislators and tour the state Capitol

ldquoOur program emphasizes the important role our youngpeople have in their schools and communities and the

importance of using their skills to make a dierencetodayrdquo said Ron Stewart coordinator of the statewide pro-gram ldquo=ese young people are ready and willing to serveItrsquos our job to challenge them and then empower themwith the appropriate resources and proper trainingldquoWe want to inspire them to believe in themselves and

to use good work ethics to accomplish their goals It alsomakes them realize that in order to be a good leader youhave to be a good personmdashincluding making the rightdecisions and doing things to beneltt othersrdquo Stewart said=e workshop oered the young people an opportunity
