METHOD

The analyzer measures Total Organic Carbon in liquid samples usingthe EPA approved method based on UV persulfate oxidation anddetection of generated carbon dioxide using a Non DispersiveInfrared Analyzer. This method meets also the requirements ofEuropean ISO/CEN guidelines. The analyzer provides thismeasurements on liquid samples ranging from 05 mg/l up to 010.000 mg/l. The analyzer is conformed to EPA, DIN, CE, ASTM,NAMUR regulations.

DUAL COMPARTMENT ENCLOSURE

The analyzer is assembled in two separated enclosures. The first one, called LIQUIDS enclosure, includes all the components involved insample and reagents flows as well as their mixing in sparging andoxidation stages. This enclosure is properly vented by a fan to allowgood air refreshment inside the cabinet. The second enclosure, calledELECTRICAL enclosure, includes the main power supply, the carrier gasgeneration and flow adjustment devices, the controller PCB assemblyand the infrared detector.

VALVE FREE SAMPLE LINE

All the sampling operations are done with peristaltic pump, includingautoclean, autocalibration and autovalidation. The sample is pumpeddirectly from the external reservoir to the T fitting connected on the otherside to acid pump head; in the traditional analyzers the sample passthrough a 3way valve, with a small orifice size (this often cause the needto clean the valve that is blocked during maintenance).

LOSS OF SAMPLE

The external reservoir mounts an internal floating vertical level sensor;this controls the level of the water and in case of loss of sample for morethan 1 minute, puts the analyzers in standby mode, waiting for thesample. As soon as the sample arrives again in the external reservoir, the analyzers starts automatically the analysis cycles.

DIGITAL FLOWMETER

The carrier gas flow is controlled by a digital flowmeter. The flowexpressed in cc/min is displayed and controlled by the analyzers. Incase of non correct values, caused for example for blockages in theline, the analyzer stops automatically and displays a fault alarm “gasreactor fail”.In the traditional analyzers the flow is controlled by a flowmeter (glasstube rotameter), there are no automatic controls of the carrier gas flow.

AIR PURIFIED INTEGRATED

An internal air compressor produces the carrier gas for oxidation and detectionstages. The air is purified with an internal soda lime filter. With this equipmentthere is no need of external air treatment system and compressor air asrequested utility, as in traditional analyzers.AUTOMATIC CHECK OF ZERO GAS

Zerogas is the residual CO2 concentration value expressed in ppm generated bycarrier gas (ambient air filtered by sodalime filter), detected by the infraredanalyzer. The ZEROGAS value expressed as CO2 ppm is automatically stored in theanalyzer database. A ZEROGAS cycle starts automatically at the time and withinterval programmed by the operator or manually.During zerogas cycle pumps and UV lamps are switched off. In these conditionsthe carrier gas goes through all the fluidics to reach the IR and the CO2concentration value expressed in ppm detected by the infrared analyzerdecreases so that after the programmed delay time it will stable and equal to theCO2 generated by carrier gas only, stored and shown as ZEROGAS.Refresh frequently this value is extremely important for measuring low TOCvalues and because the sodalime looses its capability to adsorb CO2 from airambient. When the ZEROGAS exceed a certain presetted limit the alarm “Zerotoo high” will be activated and the analyzer will stop in FAULT condition. It isrecommended to replace sodalime in sodalime filter every three months.AUTOCLEAN

This function is done with a specific peristaltic pump and allows to clean the liquidline of the analyser and also the sample line and the external reservoir (in orderto keep clean the sampling point).COMPLETE SEPARATION OF STRIPPING LINE AND CARRIER GAS LINE

In TOCMETER analyzer there are two different lines of gas: one for the strippinggas (automatically controlled by a pressure switch) and one for carrier gas(automatically controlled by a digital flowmeter); two different lines and twoseparated air compressors. In the traditional analyzers the compressed air is purified with an external device(like Domnick Hunter Air System), pass through a pressure regulator and isshared in two lines (stripping line and carrier gas line, this could be a problem incase of blockage).

MATERIALS USED IN THE ANALYZER

The materials used in the analyzer have been chosen in order to have a long lifeand reliable analyzer. The minimum number of fittings is mounted and thematerials are compatible with corrosives liquids (glass, PFA, norprene,polypropilene,...).

FAST LOOP RESERVOIRThe external reservoir allows to have a fast circulation of the sample comingfrom the sampling point or from the optional filtration unit. Inside the fastloopreservoir the sample is at atmospheric pressure and this allows the samplepump to work in proper way with constant delivery and no overpressure. In addition to this, the fastloop reservoir is a useful extra quantity of sample toavoid wrong alarms in case of short loss of sample as well as to eliminate airbubbles from sample coming the sample line or caused by the cleaning cycleof the optional filtration unit. The stainless steel drain tubing keeps a constant water level inside thecontainer and allows a proper sample circulation to avoid suspended solidsaccumulation. The sample flow should be adjusted to have the complete sample overflowthrough the stainless steel tube, U shaped. A small hole at the stainless steeltubing allows to empty the fastloop reservoir for cleaning purposes just withthe finger pressure.
