On the subject of change,do we agree with the statement:

“Every improvement is a CHANGE.”

Dr. Eli Goldratt,Creator of TOC (Theory of Constraints)

Page 3: TOC For Education, an introduction

Do we also agree with Dr. Goldratt’sstatement that:

“Not every CHANGE is an IMPROVEMENT?”

Can we think of many such examples of changes in our environment

we have had to implement that did not lead to the desired improvement?

Page 4: TOC For Education, an introduction

What is the CHANGEthat TOC for Education

envisions?

Is there a way for all these championsto impact the future?

Page 9: TOC For Education, an introduction

Do we agree that…?

Tehyi Hsieh

“The schools of a country are its future in miniature.”

Page 10: TOC For Education, an introduction

What are we trying to achieve through our schools?

What is the target?

-

Page 11: TOC For Education, an introduction

One of the major goals of education…

This is an AMBITIOUS TARGET…This is an AMBITIOUS TARGET…

Page 12: TOC For Education, an introduction

Why is it, in spite of all the changes and good

intentions of those bringing changes to education,

that we still have so many problems that prevent us

from achieving our ‘Ambitious Target’ in education?

Obstacles such as…..Many students do not know how to solve their own problems.

Many students memorize, rather than understand what they are taught.

Many students can not apply what theylearn to other situations.

Page 13: TOC For Education, an introduction

More obstacles:

“Students are prepared for life.”Why is it an Ambitious Target?

Many students do not see the relevance ofwhat they learn to their everyday lives.

Many students do not accept responsibilityfor consequences.

-

Page 14: TOC For Education, an introduction

And also, a very daunting obstacle:

Educators are expected to meet the learning and behavior needs of all their students withoutsufficient resources—time, money and stamina!

Page 15: TOC For Education, an introduction

Did these problems exist….

Page 16: TOC For Education, an introduction

“The measure of success

is not whether you have a

tough problem, but rather

if it is the same problem

that you had last year.”

John Foster Dulles

Success

Page 17: TOC For Education, an introduction

What prevents us from

fixing these

problems? Many students do not know how to solvetheir own problems. Many students memorize, rather than understand what they are taught. Many students can not apply what theylearn to other situations. Many students do not see the relevance ofwhat they learn to their everyday lives. Many students do not accept responsibility forconsequences (I did it or I am willing to do it).

Page 18: TOC For Education, an introduction

Is it because sometimes people try to fix the problem by…looking for whom to blame?

Page 19: TOC For Education, an introduction

Does blame solve a problem? Or does it usually make the problem worse? Do we need another approach…an approach that starts by helping us to understand the problem in a fair and non-provocative way?

Starting with ….what are we trying to achieve? -

Defining the problem…...

Page 21: TOC For Education, an introduction

A possible solution:

Would such a solution mean that all who leadchildren would have more time and energy for other things?

Develop all students’ ability to take responsibility for their own

learning and behaviors.

-

Page 22: TOC For Education, an introduction

What if…. there were simple THINKING TOOLS that enable students at all levels to:

Define problems and create thoughtful solutions.Effectively analyze, rather than memorize, informationin curriculum text.

Apply the content they are being taught to their everyday lives.

Apply, on their own initiative, these processes to their owndecisions so that they act in a responsible and productive way.

-17-

Set their own goals and develop logical plan for achieving them.Make reasoned judgments and decisions.

Page 23: TOC For Education, an introduction

And, what if

these thinking tools could be taught

through existing curriculum as a means

to achieve required

National Academic Standards

and Benchmarks?
