This is an AMBITIOUS TARGET…This is an AMBITIOUS TARGET…

Why is it, in spite of all the changes and good

intentions of those bringing changes to education,

that we still have so many problems that prevent us

from achieving our ‘Ambitious Target’ in education?

Obstacles such as…..Many students do not know how to solve their own problems.

Many students memorize, rather than understand what they are taught.

Many students can not apply what theylearn to other situations.

More obstacles:

“Students are prepared for life.”Why is it an Ambitious Target?

Many students do not see the relevance ofwhat they learn to their everyday lives.

Many students do not accept responsibilityfor consequences.

And also, a very daunting obstacle:

Educators are expected to meet the learning and behavior needs of all their students withoutsufficient resources—time, money and stamina!

problems?Many students do not know how to solvetheir own problems. Many students memorize, rather than understand what they are taught. Many students can not apply what theylearn to other situations. Many students do not see the relevance ofwhat they learn to their everyday lives. Many students do not accept responsibility forconsequences (I did it or I am willing to do it).

Is it because sometimes people try to fix the problem by…looking for whom to blame?

Does blame solve a problem? Or does it usually make the problem worse? Do we need another approach…an approach that starts by helping us to understand the problem in a fair and non-provocative way?

Define problems and create thoughtful solutions.Effectively analyze, rather than memorize, informationin curriculum text.

Apply the content they are being taught to their everyday lives.

Apply, on their own initiative, these processes to their owndecisions so that they act in a responsible and productive way.
