Tobacco Use in the United States
70 million Americans age 12 and older reported using tobacco products at least once in the past month (cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco and pipe tobacco)
In 2012, 20.5% of men and 15.8% of females were current tobacco users
22% of adults ages 25 to 44 are current cigarette smokers
Cigarette use is related to education; adults with bachelor degrees or higher are two times less likely not to smoke than those with less than a high school education
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death

Tobacco Use Continued..Cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the
United States. This is nearly one in five deaths
More than 10 times as many U.S. citizens have died prematurely from cigarette smoking than have died in all the wars fought by the United States during its history
The risk of dying from cigarette smoking has increased over the last 50 years in men and women in the United States

AdvertisingTobacco industries spend about $24 million per day on advertising
and promotional material
Tobacco advertising encourages young people to begin smoking before they understand the long-term health risks
Of adult smokers, 90% started by age 21 and half became regular smokers by age 18
Advertisements include products that are candy or fruit flavored and some even imply that smoking is key to financial success, thinness, independence and social acceptance

Health Hazardshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bA-s39UH4QY
CancerLung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States -Tobacco smoking causes 90% of all cases of lung cancer in men and 78% on woman-Can take 10 to 30 years to develop-5 year survival rate once diagnosed is only 17%Leukoplakia-Major risk of chewing tobacco characterized by leathery white patches inside the mouth-1 out of 5 leukoplakias are cancerous

Health Hazards Cont.Cardiovascular Disease -Over a third of all tobacco-related deaths occur from heart disease-Smoking ages the arteries, accelerates the buildup of fatty deposits in the heart and major blood vessels, causes blood clots which decreases the oxygen supply to the heart and can weaken tissue-Smokers are two to four times more likely to suffer from strokes as nonsmokers-If a person quits smoking, the risk of dying from a heart attack falls by half after only 1 year

Health Hazards Cont.Respiratory Disorders-Increases susceptibility to colds, flu, pneumonia, and asthma -Cumulative lung damage can lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-Smokers are 13 times more likely to die from COPD than non smokers-Emphysema can develop which makes breathing difficultFertility Problems-Increased risk of impotence, infertility-In pregnant women, increased risk of miscarriage, stillbirths and low birth weight babies

Quotes "Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I've done it thousands of times." - Mark Twain
"The true face of smoking is disease, death and horror - not the glamour and sophistication the pushers in the tobacco industry try to portray." - David Byrne
“One of the great regrets of my life is that I smoked. If I could say anything to anybody starting out in life it would be, ‘Whatever you do, don’t smoke’. I have had to recover from that and been lucky that I have been able to stop.” – Bill Nighy,
“Smoking helps you lose weight – one lung at a time!” – Alfred E. Neuman (Mad Magazine)

Thoughts & Opinions I still do not understand why anyone would want to start smoking in the first place when they know how much damage one cigarette can do to their body. The government knows how bad tobacco is for everyone but they make so much money off of these products they allow tobacco companies to continue selling their poison. Smoking is a death sentence. Today we see many ads on television (such as MTV) depicting tobacco as an ugly and dangerous habit. I completely agree with these scare tactics and I think they should be shown on every station and even be placed on tobacco products so it will make people think before they open their pack of cigarettes.

Discussion Questions1.How can we make Tobacco products less attractive to youth? Do you
think the anti-smoking ads are effective?
2.What do you think about the no-smoking policies we have at our school? Do they help to decrease or increase the numbers of students that smoke? Why or why not?
