This season is always structured around three mighty planks – our Christmas show and two productions from Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory (SATTF). This Christmas we’ve assembled a fantastic cast and crew to create a Cinderella that I’m sure will be talked about for many years to come. It is twelve years since Lear has been seen in Bristol and for SATTF to return to one of the greatest plays of all time is a glorious prospect. They also bring us The Cherry Orchard, their third excursion into Chekhov, following a legendary Three Sisters here in 2005 and a wonderful Uncle Vanya at Bristol Old Vic.

It’s not just about these three though and I am thrilled to present such a strong programme in both spaces. As well as top-drawer comedy in the Factory Theatre we present a timely adaptation of a classic, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, alongside one of Bristol’s favourite visiting companies, Little Bulb; anyone who has seen them before will be racing to The Marvellous and Unlikely Fête of Little and Upper Downing. The Brewery programme is the strongest it has ever been. Alongside some of Bristol’s best companies we are presenting Blind Summit, Third Angel, mala voadora, Paines Plough, Show and Tell and Idle Motion. It’s an absolutely stellar season and I really hope we see you down here often.

CINDERELLA: A FAIRYTALECHRISTMAS 2011TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRE AND TRAVELLING LIGHT

Director Sally Cookson Designer Katie Sykes Musical Direction Benji Bower Dramaturg Adam Peck

We join forces once again with the brilliant Travelling Light for a Christmas delight for all the family. The creative team behind Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and Bristol Old Vic’s Treasure Island bring you a brand new version of one of the oldest, best loved fairytales of all time. When a rich man’s wife dies, his daughter Ella mourns her beloved mother with a grief as deep as the snow on her grave. Before the spring sun has time to melt it, her father takes a second wife and their peaceful life is taken over by a host of new and unpleasant relations. Her only friends are the woodland birds who roost in the tree that grows over the grave, but they are no ordinary birds...

With their quirky visual style, crystal-clear storytelling, original live music and pitch-perfect ensemble acting, director Sally Cookson and team bring this classic tale of fortunes reversed startlingly and imaginatively to life.

After the sell-out success of Crocosmia and Operation Greenfield Little Bulb, one of the UK’s most exciting theatre companies for years, return with a season highlight and a traditional English fête.The Little Upper Downing Folk Society is in town and as well as wanting to share some cracking tunes, there’s a severe hole in the history curriculum that desperately needs to be rectified.

As if it wasn’t bad enough that most people haven’t even heard of Little Upper Downing, no one even seems to realise that it was home to the greatest folk duo of all time!

Fear not though, as Seth, Peter, Charlotte and Mary have brought just enough props and passion to tell you the tale of the villages’ two unlikely heroes, Derek Badger and Christopher Roaring, both on a journey of self discovery through fog, friendship, folk music, and the odd ribbon dance.

“An all-singing, all-playing cast work their socks off, display genuine musicianship and invest every single second with total sincerity... One of theatre’s most cherishable young companies” The Guardian

The true story of the Tudors – through the eyes of Henry’s wives. The story of the greatest of royal weddings – all six of them. Henry VIII caused a constitutional crisis because of his serial marriage disorder, caused misery to five of his wives, but created a celebrity out of his wedding planner.

This stunning new historical performance takes a hilarious, dramatic and touching journey through the lives of Henry’s jilted brides, from the eyes of longstanding lady in waiting, Jane Parker.

Jane marries Anne Boylen’s ill-fated brother and becomes Jane Boylen, Lady Rochfort, building an intimate knowledge of the tos and fros of the royal bedchamber. With each wife brilliantly portrayed, Jane tells us the real story of the Tudors, all performed brilliantly by Julia Gwynne under the direction of Andy Burden (The Adventures of Pinocchio).

Director, Bristol Festival of Ideas

This adaptation of Robert Tressell’s famous novel is a hilarious fast-paced show that shares with its audience a year in the life of a group of painters and decorators, as they renovate a three-storey town house for Mayor Sweater. It traces their struggle for survival in a complacent and stagnating Edwardian England. These workers are the “philanthropists” who throw themselves into back-breaking work for poverty wages in order to generate profit for their masters.

This vibrant, lively story is brought to life by two hugely talented and experienced performers using comedy routines, entertaining songs and live music from the Music Hall and uplifting hymns from the Chapel sung in graceful harmony.

This not to be missed story is brought to life using live music, mayhem and mirth.

This production has been made possible by the excellent support and sponsorship from the TUC and many individual Trade Unions.

One of the pinnacles of world drama, and Shakespeare’s greatest masterpiece, King Lear is the most complete account we have of what it is – and what it is not – to be human. The play launched Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory on an unsuspecting world in February 2000; the company is delighted to offer this new production to a much larger audience in 2012.

John Shrapnel plays King Lear.

“Andrew Hilton’s commanding production... is once again a revelation” The Guardian (on 2011’s Richard II)

“One of the finest productions of Shakespeare – or any other playwright for that matter – seen in Bristol in years” The Independent (on the 2000 production of King Lear)

In his final tragi-comic masterpiece Chekhov portrays an aristocratic family bewildered and impotent in the face of financial bankruptcy and the huge social changes sweeping Russia in the early years of the twentieth century. This will be Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory’s third excursion into Chekhov, following its 2005 Three Sisters, and the 2009 SATTF/Bristol Old Vic co-prodution of Uncle Vanya.

Julia Hills plays Ranevskaya.

“A marvellous blend of heartache and hilarity… This truly is the most wonderful production” The Times (on Uncle Vanya)

“I don’t think that I’ve ever seen a Three Sisters that is quite as funny, quite so gloriously human” The Guardian

A visual romp through French New Wave style and puppet existentialism.Following a sell-out run at the Bristol Festival of Puppetry, puppet innovators Blind Summit Theatre return with their award-winning, brand new adult puppetry show.

Join them on a visual journey that takes in a ballet of disembodied heads, a story told entirely by pictures emerging from a briefcase and a tiny Moses with a cardboard head full of lonely wisdom. Told with beautiful puppets and Blind Summit’s trademark performing style this story combines dark humour and flat-pack technology. No man is an island... but sometimes a puppet can be a table.

The company that created the puppetry in Anthony Minghella’s award-winning Madam Butterfly, Simon McBurney’s A Dog’s Heart, Complicite’s Shunkin, as well as their own genre-breaking productions including 1984 at BAC, return to their Low Life roots as the “front men of rock’n’roll puppetry” (Time Out) in a brand-new show about a puppet stuck on a table.

“Absolutely sublime, the best thing this excellent company has ever done” Time Out

This show is a feast for the imagination where circus, theatre and state of the art technology meet with the beautiful physicality of expression.Ground-breaking multi-touch screen technology has been developed especially for this show to allow the performers and set to become intrinsically one.

Folie à Deux takes the audience on a journey through the minds of two very unique individuals: one who believes he is dead, the other who has forgotten her past. The story takes place in a retreat for the mentally unwell where we meet the two characters sharing a room and their memories.

Centred around a huge scaffold structure and ground-breaking multi-touch screen, these unforgettable characters will whisk you away into the theatre of their minds where the imagination in unleashed. Falling from extreme heights, entombed under rubble. The impossible journey of a ball, all become reality in this mesmerising horizon of the imagination.

Directed by internationally-renowned physical theatre expert Bim Mason, this story universally resonates with the search for who we are and where our place in the world is. An intimate tale of both human experience and loss and the delicate kindness that can appear in the cracks of distress.

IMPROVINSTANT WIT

STORYTELLING SUNDAYSBRISTOL STORYTELLING FESTIVAL

Instant Wit; the quick-fire comedy improvisation show. Fresh and inventive, the perfect pick-me-up tonic!Welcome to an evening of sketches, songs, gags, games and general silliness – and all of it based around audience suggestions. And if you’re too shy to shout anything out? Don’t worry; you’ll have the chance to write things down (anonymously) in the interval. We’ll look daft, not you! Good suggestions get flying packets of custard, the best wins a bottle of wine.

“These are conspicuously skilful performances – everyone is exhilarated on stage and off” The Guardian

A new season of cutting-edge performance storytelling at The Brewery.

THE GIRL WHO BECAME A BOY Sun 05 February Renowned storyteller Jo Blake Cave has teamed up with much-admired Bristol musical duo ‘Glowglobes’ (John Holmes & Laura Pocket) to present an Albanian wonder tale, ingeniously transposed into a post-apocalyptic landscape.

WAYLAND THE SMITH Sun 04 March Bristol storyteller Martin Maudsley collaborates with cellist Ailsa Mair Hughes to bring this stirring Norse tale to life. A carefully crafted performance of words and images forged in the flames of music and song.

SHEARWATER Sun 01 April Northumbria based duo Tim Dalling (Kneehigh, New Rope String Band) and master storyteller Malcolm Green present an evocative performance of seabirds, stories and songs.

An uplifting and beautiful new piece of puppetry for anyone who has ever felt sad but now feels a bit better.Ivan Rose is six years old. Shut away in his little house in the city watched by his aging tutor, he fantasises about the outside world. His father spends most of his time away, and Ivan can only imagine he is off fighting dragons and generally being a hero! This is a story about how Sam Rose and his son, Ivan become embroiled in an epic quest that will bring them face to face with love, memory and hope.

Tucked In make puppetry-based visual theatre that appeals to a universal audience. This is their third visit to Bristol having previously toured Jackajack and Tim and Light to the Tobacco Factory Theatre.

SIMON MUNNERYHATS OFF TO THE 101ERS, AND OTHER MATERIALTHE COMEDY BOX

“Lawrence, should he so wish, could be the defining stand-up comic of his generation” The Guardian

Star of BBC1’s Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow double and Edinburgh Comedy Award Nominee.

Maybe you’ve caught one of his rare TV appearances. Maybe you’ve heard his Radio 4 series What To Do If You’re Not Like Everybody Else. Probably you’ve never heard of Andrew Lawrence at all. How remiss of you. Join him as he embarks on his latest UK stand-up tour.

“The Boy with Tape on his Face is utterly spectacular! Endlessly inventive, hysterically funny. Fight for a ticket” Time Out

The silent show that is creating a lot of talk. Mime with noise, stand-up with no talking, drama with no acting. You’ll laugh, you’ll scream and ultimately you’ll end up like The Boy – lost for words.

The Boy with Tape on his Face, is the creation of New Zealand street performer Sam Wills.

“A truly magical experience” Chortle.co.uk

“Simon Munnery is nothing less than a genius” The Guardian

Sony Radio Award-winner, Simon Munnery presents a brand new show. It’s an extravagant mess of foaming bubble hats, superlative jokes, bad guitar riffs, delightful monologues, hand-made engineering feats and an overly ambitious one-man punk musical about the R101 airship of the 1930s. All performed with a plum. Or some other fruit.

RICHARD HERRINGWHAT IS LOVE ANYWAY?THE COMEDY BOX

HENNING WEHNNO SURRENDERTHE COMEDY BOX

ISY SUTTIEPEARL AND DAVETHE COMEDY BOX

“Stimulating and exhilarating... Utterly hilarious” Chortle.co.uk

Does anybody love anybody anyway? So asked insane, Welsh poet philosopher Howard Jones in 1983. Finally someone dares to answer. Having sorted out religion (Christ on a Bike), politics (Hitler Moustache) and penises (Talking Cock), the star of the award-winning podcast As It Occurs To Me and Radio 4’s Richard Herring’s Objective seeks to define and destroy love. Before love destroys him. Again. Does Richard’s dry-cleaner genuinely love him? How could a romantic gesture involving Ferrero Rochers get dangerously out of control?

“Side-splittingly funny” The Scotsman

You may well have heard Henning on BBC Radio’s Unbelievable Truth, News Quiz, The Now Show and Fighting Talk or seen him on QI, Dave’s One Night Stand or Edinburgh and Beyond – now’s your chance to see the self-appointed German Comedy Ambassador to the UK in the flesh in his sell-out Edinburgh show, No Surrender. Teutonic jolliness at its best. Come along… or else. Deutschland über alles!

“A vulnerable man grappling with a language that isn’t his own” The Guardian

“Touching comedy told with affection” The Sunday Telegraph

This extraordinary new one-woman comedy show tells the story of the part Isy played in two people’s blossoming internet romance whilst on her own treacherous search for true love. Bursting with hilarity and genuinely touching, this beautifully nuanced show flits between stand-up, music and character comedy. Also known as Dobby in Peep Show (C4) and Kiki in Whites (BBC2).

“A voice you want to swim in” The Independent

RICH HALLUK TOUR 2012THE COMEDY BOX

“Unmissable... Hall is one of the most winningly funny stand-ups in the business” Independent on Sunday

Writer, comedian, musician and regular on shows such as QI and Have I Got News For You, Rich Hall is known for his grouchy, deadpan persona. He is a master of absurdest irony while eschewing the human condition, and particularly likes to lay into his fellow Americans and life across the pond at every opportunity. Although he is not averse to locating the absurd in the UK’s political landscape either. Expect an evening of high grade satirical and observational comedy the way God intended.

“I doubt if anyone forgets the first time they witness the comic genius that is Rich Hall” The Scotsman

Back for a fifth year running, Script Space is an open competition that invites submissions of new, unperformed one-act plays from UK-based writers for tailor-made development opportunities. It’s very simple, really: we’re looking for exciting writing from exciting writers whom we’d like to work with further.

We will select up to three plays to take forward for development. What form that development takes will depend on the plays themselves; it’ll be bespoke, to ensure maximum benefit to the writing and the writer. Previous development work has included: dramaturgical advice, R&D time with actors and a director, a rehearsed reading or small-scale production.

Submission guidelines We’d much rather receive your play by email. Please send a single Word or PDF attachment (no CVs or synopses, please) to [email protected], putting the play title in the subject box. NB Entries will be judged anonymously, so please don’t include your name on the play itself. We anticipate a high volume of submissions, so do bear with us.

Prototype is an exhilarating evening of brand new performance-in-the-making that sees emerging companies rubbing shoulders with established artists to try out their fledgling ideas before a hugely engaged, well informed and supportive audience. It’s fresh, fast and full-on: watch extracts from what a handful of performance-makers from across the art forms are working on right here, right now, and then answer their questions about what you’ve seen and play a vital role in helping new work fulfil its potential.

Prototype never fails to entertain, surprise, stimulate and provoke, fuelled by the invention, talent and ambition of Bristol’s performance community. Come and be a part of where the shows of tomorrow start.
