Yes, wish tithing was encouraged more – are we still a tithing parish

10. When the parish was formed, the focus was on serving the less fortunate using our time, talent and treasure. Do you see evidence of this in our parish today?

Yes 253 No 11 Don’t know 1

Comment

1. I would like to see more folks participating in liturgy ministries 2. There is certainly less service since the food pantry/thrift shop are now separate. 3. Haiti efforts, parish thrift store, food bank 4. Don’t know to answer5. Thrift store and food pantry 6. Food pantry, Kairos, Thrift Shop 7. Thrift shop, food pantry8. Food pantry, CHWC, service projects, Haiti 9. Collections, donations 10.Yes but we could do better11.Parish thrift store, Haiti, etc.12.A lot less than in earlier years13.Yes but mostly with treasure 14.Youth groups focus on this 15.Thrift shop16.Food pantry, CHWC

17.Haiti, work on PORT, thrift shop, Catholic Heart18.No homebound. Not less fortunate as a parish prison ministry some are able to give

more money 19.Haiti, food pantry, soup kitchen 20.Through the ministries 21.Very little 22.Parish makes good effort23.Not sure…regret my participation is limited – but hope to change that (random remark

on side) maybe a military group?24.We have strayed a bit since I started coming. I feel we should focus more on that 25.Yes, but not as much26.Thrift shop, St. Paul’s donations, CHWC27.Haiti28.Food pantry, thrift shop whose profits help the less fortunate29.Pantry, collection for less fortunate, Haiti service, all very good 30.Special involvement with Haiti is great31.St. Paul’s soup kitchen, Disaster Relief collections and youth ministry outreach 32.Israeli wood carver visit; Father Bob’s comments following Charlottesville riot;

collection for hurricane survivors33.It is evident in the ministries, sister church in Haiti, etc. 34.Youth activities, Haiti, thrift store, food bank 35.Yes but not at the same level as at the beginning (1991-92)36.Less evident than in past, seems to be in decline! 37.Yes, but it has clearly decreased in the number of active participants 38.Haiti committee, visiting the sick39.Not sure 40.Not as much 41.Thrift store and food pantry 42.Does not apply – I am not yet active in parish activities 43.Thrift shop; work camps44.Thrift store, food pantry, ministering to the sick45.Haiti ministry, thrift shop and food pantry volunteers (although not now sponsored by

us) we see less evidence than formerly46.Catholic Heart/thrift shop/food pantry 47.Seems to be in-line with other parishes I’ve been in48.Some 49.Food bank our sister church in Haiti, cookie ministry, soup kitchen, sandwich making50.Thrift shop/food pantry 51.No, I left because it became the focus of everything 52.Not qualified to answer 53.Yes, but not as much as could be 54.Yes it would be nice to hear at Mass about some of the accomplishments and status55.Yes, unfortunately our most obvious and direct method – thrift shop – is now

“detached” similar to SHARE56.Haiti but not local 57.Yes just 5 days

58.Food pantry – thrift shop59.Food drives 60.Parish thrift store, food pantry61.Yes, but newer members do not seem to undertake a ministry. And the older

members are tired and not as able as 30 years ago. At the beginning of our parish many women did not work outside the home. Now I think most women do have a job. They are tired, have children who are involved in many activities and therefore their families are also involved. Difficult to do “extra” at St. K. too many obligations. I have reached out to some neighbors and that is what I was told. And I see that.

62.Food pantry is an excellent example63.Recent example with hurricane relief 64.But not as much as we did in the past, there is no community65.Prison ministry 66.Food pantry and many other ministries 67.Yes not all the time, but in important ways 68.Yes, but not as strongly 69.Yes, but not as much as before. There has been no emphasis on ministry 70.Some 71.With food collection 72.It often seems the emphasis is on Poquoson area versus other parish areas73.Do not know 74.I’m new but I believe so 75.One of the reasons we are moving to St. K. more mission-centered, especially in local

community 76.Parish thrift shop- youth activities 77.Have not been attending long enough to comment78.Yes in the food pantry and other ministries 79.Food pantry80.But less emphasis now. Need more = more parish unity! Maybe some additional

emphasis on house churches participation would help! 81.Collecting food for the food pantry and hurricane relief collections 82.Food pantry, soup kitchen, Catholic Heart work camp, KAIROS83.Yes, but not as much 84.Prison and Caribbean ministries 85.Yes, needs more participation from church members

11. How would you describe your experience during Mass at Kateri?

Comment:

1. Solemn, reflective, joyous2. Enjoy the quiet atmosphere. Last church the pastor scolded us. I like the homily

addresses the teachings of the Gospel 3. Excellent 4. Peaceful, very rewarding5. I love Mass!

6. Warm priest, good music, like being with our family, feel a part of it all, could be more reverent and more dogmatic at times, space makes reverence harder, new chairs warmed it up

7. Uplifting, community 8. Love the music! Homilies are nice, I miss the kneelers and quiet time before Mass.9. Good, would be better if we had a church building (sanctuary) 10.The Eucharist is meaningful 11.Very enjoyable, we like your pithy and succinct homilies, Father! 12.Involved. The homilies bring meaning to me from week to week13.Love receiving Eucharist. Enjoy Fr.’s homilies 14.Contentment15.Very enjoyable and spiritually rewarding16.Great 17.Very nice18.Outstanding 19.Very good 20.Fulfilling my spiritual needs21.Fulfillment 22.So-so. There is a lack of reverence in the parish. People talking, drinking, not respecting

the body. Ritual has its place in promoting reverence and we have lost much useful ritual.

23.Ok +/- overabundance of songs/verses. Perhaps a distraction. Distraction from Mass message

24.Very good, focused, good sermons, good music25.It’s nice and accepting :)26.Thoughtful. Fr. Bob’s homilies are concise and informative, good bridge to modern life,

music a definite plus 27.Content 28.Much enjoyed, a very friendly parish 29.Good 30.Good 31.Spiritual 32.Fulfilling 33.Welcoming, educational, thought-provoking 34.Very good, excellent sermons, thought-provoking 35.Very good 36.Positive. I am very involved in Mass. I enjoy Father and the community very much37.Ok 38.Very positive sermons are wonderful, concise to the point not rambling 39.Good 40.Brings peace41.Fine, we are grateful for the new chairs 42.We very much appreciate Children’s Liturgy 43.Good 44.Good 45.Positive more so than in the past

46.Fulfilling 47.Great 48.Satisfying 49.Fr. Bob is doing a great job 50.Content – happy – music could be a bit more joyful51.Good prayer, but could be better52.Spiritual fellowship, could do better with music 53.Very good 54.Peaceful and comfortable with the new chairs. Thanks!55.Ok but don’t seem to get a lot out of Mass56.Pleasant 57.Great sermons, friendly parishioners 58.Uplifting 59.Feeds my soul60.Very good61.Uplifting 62.Home. It is nice to see folks we know at Sat/Sun or daily mass63.Too much singing – I wish we had a dedicated church building miss the traditional

church 64.Renewed 65.I am fed for my spiritual needs. I also receive blessings when I attend Mass at a xxxxx

church in Williamsburg with my friend Monica I return to St. Joe’s in Buckroe former parish as a good home coming

66.Welcoming and pleasant 67.Overall good, but at times at times the music distracts from the Mass, i.e. can’t

understand versus during psalter 68.Is different for each member of the family I love coming to mass and experience the

presents of Jesus but is hard to get the family engaged in the same way69.Very positive; love Fr. Bobs homilies and peaceful atmosphere he promotes70.Positive, friendly, timely, welcoming. On point does not drag on. I really appreciate

that71.We would both like the focus on reverence to be exclamated 72.Fulfilling 73.Home. Feels the same as it always has my whole life74.We do not (like) where the choir is located. It’s a huge distraction 75.Good 76.Welcoming/reflective/homilies are instructive 77.Very welcoming (registered in Sep) reassuring of personal challenges78.Nice. I would like for there to be more traditional aspects included to the Mass79.Great it’s all I need 80.Good 81.The mass is pleasant but very different than how I was raised, i.e. kneeling, Altar

service, etc. 82.Positive 83.Good 84.We love our church family and enjoy the Mass

85.Mass at Kateri is spiritual and welcoming. I feel at home when I walk in the doors86.Pleasant and fulfilling87.Living or professing our faith as one which I feel has to do with Fr. Bob. 88.Engaged 89.Fine 90.Satisfactory 91.Enjoy 92.Okay. I like to pray before Mass and it is noisy. My wife wishes it looked more like a

traditional church 93.Welcoming, excited94.Please see back sheet for suggestions.

a. Please consider missals so we can read along with lectors! b. Please consider printing/including all of the verses of the responsorial psalm! c. While it is evident that our parish is lively and welcoming parish, it is very

difficult to prepare oneself for Mass upon entering the building because of all the chatting and socializing going on…even while the cantor is making announcements. It is very distracting. Why couldn’t the rule be to reverently be quiet before Mass and then chat and socialize afterwards – like most every other Catholic Parish?

95.Positive 96.Inspiring 97.Fulfilling, enriching 98.Great 99.Excellent 100. Good. Like incorporating youth into Mass. Like new chairs. Comfy! 101. I feel that Mass aids me in expanding myself mentally and spiritually102. Look forward to coming each week103. I feel part of the Mass through my ministries, the service and the music. I do

miss some of the ‘older’ songs104. Good 105. Very positive 106. I am a new member and really enjoy the hospitality107. Excellent 108. Celebration of the Eucharist is good and inspiring. The congregation is not so

spiritually engaged – participation does not seem enthusiastic or devoted109. Spiritual – priest sermons short and to the Gospel message110. Poor. No community, really no friends to be made outside of Mass, cold 111. Great. I love that Father Bob interacts with the children. Warm community112. Fr. Bob seems MOST aware of encouraging us to JOIN into the worship and

prayer113. Very good 114. Satisfied115. Positive, community-based 116. Peaceful 117. Very positive118. Calm, friendly, contemporary

119. Positive and fulfilling 120. Spiritually fulfilling 121. Improved since Father Bob came. More kid friendly122. Very favorable. Always leave feeling renewed, refreshed and with a hopeful

spirit123. Positive124. Positive welcoming 125. Peaceful, I enjoy the experience here126. Very welcoming, eye-opening and pleasant 127. Good 128. Reflective, communal, sermons could use improvement 129. Wish audio speakers were better especially for seating at other side of altar.

Also question printing so much paper each week for songs. Curious why parish doesn’t have song books.

130. Mostly attentive, spiritually rewarding 131. Good 132. Enjoyable – not sure 133. Low key 134. People do not treat the facility with the appropriate respect.

a. Would like to see missals available to be able to follow along with the readings.b. Would like to see progress toward building a traditional church instead of a

multipurpose social hall. 135. Positive, communal136. Very noisy 137. We enjoy Fr. Bob’s quick sermons and the message he gives us 138. Pretty good 139. Enjoyable – love Children’s Church and the music 140. Fulfilled 141. Very different – I am having trouble getting used to a dressed down Mass142. Makes me feel happy; very rewarding and spiritual143. Praying the music would be more uplifting 144. Mass is Mass but it’s not as spirited as we would like, including the delivery of

the homily145. Would like to see more interaction with community146. Very moving 147. Excellent I need to join St. Kateri. Currently at Mt. Carmel but moved 148. ?149. Comforting150. Excellent, very good151. Every priest brings a new season. I enjoy Father Bob’s Masses152. Good – sound system could use some tuning. Not always able to hear Father

clearly153. I enjoy the Mass and sermons but can’t always hear Father154. An active participant 155. Slow, boring, but adequate, music needs to be pepped up156. Good

157. Ok 158. Spiritual I like Fr. Bob’s sermons 159. Meaningful, welcomed 160. Very good 161. Very good 162. I left because of previous priest 163. Comfortable accepting community, audio system sometimes a challenge 164. Very positive 165. Generally enjoy the Mass. Music can use a wider selection of songs. Feel God’s

presence166. Great 167. Great community 168. I always enjoy the Mass and especially like Father Bob’s technique at tying the

homily to the readings 169. Informative and enjoyable 170. Joy in community sharing praise and love 171. Would appreciate more periods of silence (no music, no singing) esp. after

communion172. We are pleased with the service. Starts and ends on time. Always with a practical

lesson173. Into myself peaceful 174. Music is in need of better singers – I know of people who left parish because of

this and priest reading sermons also only come people spoken to and others are not – not welcoming except for greeters and bulletin people

175. Enlightening, joyful, prayerful, and time to reflect 176. (Cold), enjoy the music177. Friendly as family 178. Good 179. Very nice I wish though that I could bring the gifts to the altar, never been

selected to do this180. Good 181. I find Mass to be respectful, inspiring and pleasant 182. Fulfilling, appreciate thoughtful liturgies 183. Good, relevant to times, homilies are tied to the scripture and its relatedness to

our current world 184. I like how Father explains the Gospel and ties in real world examples185. Peaceful 186. Joyful and merciful, informative and welcoming 187. Peace, kindness, love, joy 188. Fine 189. Very good 190. Serves my needs 191. Warm and enjoyable192. Meaningful, warm, accepting193. Friendly 194. Informative, religious experience and relaxing

195. Music is good and I find the sermons make me more reflective 196. N/A197. Not a regular198. Happy 199. Good 200. Much better after Fr. Charlie’s tenure 201. I enjoy Fr. Bob’s homilies – very friendly group 202. Adequate 203. Noisy 204. Beneficial 205. Very comfortable206. We feel connected and involved and uplifted. We feel we are part of the

community 207. Better since Fr. Bob has come 208. Good 209. Welcoming, comfortable, enlightening, friendly 210. A friendly community drawn together to worship211. Good – choir member212. Participatory, enriching, active 213. Interested, participating, praying 214. Don’t’ know how to answer this215. I read the bible216. Good 217. Very pleasant. I do which there were more reverent quiet before mass 218. I feel a sense of community at St. Kateri, however, it feels more casual (not a

church setting)219. Enjoyable 220. Peaceful, enlightening 221. Ok 222. Very good223. Good 224. Uplifting, joyful, positive. I love the modern music! So uplifting225. Very good. Especially now with Fr. Bob!! 226. Prayerful, peaceful227. Wonderful 228. Pleasant, feeling part of community. I am not in favor of television in children’s

room. Needs a window to feel a part. Cannot hear/speaker system229. Great 230. We love it – we have had several friends join the parish and they love it as well –

no judgement – all are welcome 231. Brings me back to my true purpose232. I have only come 3 times but have been ministered to each time233. Pleasurable 234. Peaceful 235. Comforting, communal, excepting (accepting sp) 236. Good

237. Prayerful – reflective – like Fr. Bob’s simplicity/time with liturgy238. Positive interaction with priest and community. Uplifting and comfortable 239. Great 240. Uplifting and fuel for the week 241. OK242. I enjoy participating in the Mass. Altar servers was a nice addition I rarely fall

asleep! Honestly, he is more personable than Fr. Charlie (RIP) was. 243. Really good music. And Father Bob is really swell!244. Meaningful, friendly 245. Very good 246. I enjoy the sense of community247. Peaceful 248. We enjoy the traditional Mass249. Sharing with others the bread and wine 250. Welcoming 251. Community 252. Very positive 253. Great 254. Nice, but would like Father Bob to speak a little louder255. Uplifting 256. Pleasant/good homilies 257. Mass gives me a personal spiritual centering and experience – I find a lot of

people moving around – to rest room i.e. – distracting 258. I’m not a hand holder – it spreads germs and can’t always hear even with

hearing aids 259. Learning and community

12. Does St. Kateri currently meet your personal/family religious and spiritual expectations?

Yes 269 No 6 Yes/No 3

Comment:

1. My life is difficult at best 2. Yes and No I would like to have a blessing of the pets for our fur family3. No is counseling available? When I asked Fr. Charlie he referred us elsewhere. 4. So-so. There is a lack of reverence in the parish. People talking, drinking, not

respecting the body. Ritual has its place in promoting reverence and we have lost much useful ritual. We have looked for other churches because of this.

5. Still lean to Vatican I ~18706. Could be better little slow, I go to another church for bible study in the evening7. Yes, non-members who do contribute 8. Father is very good at dealing with our youngsters and teens 9. Would like to see a large cross above the altar and some statues 10.Good Rel. Ed program 11.With faith formation, giving deeper understanding

12.Reminds me of my college days at a Catholic College, now at university in Olston PA13.Although our needs are met, there is always room for improvement in liturgy,

especially music14.Yes, because offers great opportunities for adult formation and volunteer

opportunities. However I think it is missing a more inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone

15.Would like to say more prayers to Mary, maybe rosary before Mass16.Believe youth education is fundamental 17.Very welcoming (registered in Sep) reassuring of personal challenges18.The youth group were pivotal in my children acceptance when I moved to VA and

remain important 19.The mass is pleasant but very different than how I was raised, i.e. kneeling, Altar

service, etc. 20.Yes but would like to see more prayer and devotion maybe on feast days, a special

night of prayer/adoration21.It could be awesome to have Eucharistic Adoration or something else along those lines22.It’s not what St. K can do for me it’s what I can do for St. K23.After 50 years I didn’t expect much. I do like the men’s breakfasts 24.Please see back sheet for suggestions.

a. Please consider missals so we can read along with lectors! b. Please consider printing/including all of the verses of the responsorial psalm! c. While it is evident that our parish is lively and welcoming parish, it is very

difficult to prepare oneself for Mas upon entering the building because of all the chatting and socializing going on…even while the cantor is making announcements. It is very distracting. Why couldn’t the rule be to reverently be quiet before Mass and then chat and socialize afterwards – like most every other Catholic Parish?

25. Yes, I came from a church in a resort area and felt like I was at a fund raiser every Sunday. Being here is so refreshing. Thank you!

26.Fr. Bob has great homilies 27.Yes, but would like to see more group participation, e.g. house church participation

has dwindled 28.Fr. Bob’s homilies are excellent 29.Somewhat Mass is Mass but it’s not as spirited as we would like, including the delivery

of the homily30.I just need to seek more time to use what is available 31.Would like to have the rosary prayed before Mass 32.Yes, need more special events for children 33.Our first time back in 8 years34.Celebrations, homily, religious education all well received 35.Classes are great – atmosphere at Mass not so much36.My daughter enjoys the music relaxed environment, I like the rexxxx at St. Joan’s37.I am happy to see more classes for adults 38.The reason we moved our membership39.Maybe could put the Gospel reading in context with the time period. Explain meaning

better

40.My husband is not Catholic but is welcomed 41.Yes, sure wish we had a church. Does Richmond know we are here42.Religious education – we came here to satisfy needs that weren’t addressed at other

nearly parishes 43.Still in the beginning stages of learning all you have to offer but feeling good so far44.Too new to determine 45.Yes/no Mass is very good – more daily Mass (like Fri. even Sat. morning) would be

SUPER! a. Good classes for CATHECHISTS – even more participation would be better –

Good youth program & CCD classes! b. But how about a class between Masses for parents and adults. c. A number of parents stay in between Masses with toddlers – maybe an activity

for them, sponsored by the youth group? d. How about a monthly class in evening/weekend for adults or families teaching

xxxxx topics taught by Father (or other) maybe with a potluck? The classes held by Fr. Charlie like this were well attended!

46.Yes, but I’d like to see the parish as a whole reach out more to parishioners in need: financially, emotionally, physically

47.Yes, church is made easy and less stressful by services for children 48.Yes, I would like some education during the day during week – I’m not sure it is now

available 49.Yes, ministry for future religious development is good, but sometimes difficult due to

time (offered)

13. Does St. Kateri currently meet your personal/family’s formations needs (Religious Education)?

Yes 235 No 10 Yes/No 1 N/A 7

Comment:

1. Need more religious ed volunteers2. Yes I think the challenge in confirmation from 2 years to 1 year is a BIG mistake!!!

Much richness and service were lost. 3. Yes classes are offered; haven’t participated tho’ 4. No unclear what is open to divorced people 5. No unwelcoming attitude for those who are not original members or who want to

promote reverence. 6. NA, no kids in house still and wife is not Catholic 7. Youth program was what brought us to St. K, keep kids involved and through them the

parents. Pat Kovak was amazing with Youth Group – program seems to connect less with teens than when she did it. We should examine

8. Do not attend any classes 9. Yes! Thank you! 10.Yes when my children attended

11.Plan to participate in evening adult religion in near future12.Non-member at present although offers13.N/A currently 14.Excellent opportunities15.I attend House Church 16.Classes offered – up to parishioners to take advantage of them17.Rel ed is long maybe a little less time commitment maybe only 2 x a month18.There are many opportunities to enrich my faith 19.N/A20.We have a lot of opportunities for formation 21.I am able to join on the Saturday offering. I have committed myself to a Bible Study

Class on Monday night Bible Study International 22.RE for teens is good – my kids don’t hesitate to go but the time takes away from family

dinner on one of the only nights we have a chance to be together. Why can’t it be right after 11 am mass?

23.No. the adult religious ed is not theologically guided. We feel sort of ‘self or group’ led.

24.Young kids (pre4-5) seems great but I feel like the high school students are lacking quality leadership/direction/community building

25.No teachings of prayers – Rosary etc. 26.Been several years but children benefit from youth education/classes (Pat Kovak era) –

hope that continues! Strength of parish 27.N/A – all 3 done 28.I have participated in Bible Stud and adult studies. Just wish they were a little more

interesting and we could change up materials.29.Yes I think more options for young adult formation is needed, aside from the AFF

classes. Sometimes it’s more difficult for young adults to feel comfortable in their space for growth with such a large age gap. As for youth getting back to the roots of the Catholic faith and tradition is important.

30.I would prefer more self-studies via technology31.Very good JYG program and caring teachers for both younger grades and JYG32.AFF helps us to grow in many ways33.Extremely lengthy time commitments for families with multiple children. However the

content and groups are fun 34.The RE program has been fabulous and beyond any other parish that we have ever

been members of 35.It could but my family is going to different churches 36.My children have and do participate in RE and do so willingly 37.Having recently transferred from another parish, I am impressed by and quite pleased

with the RE staff38.Would like to have JYG and PK-5 RE at the same time to avoid additional trips39.Yes, but parental/student suggestions for changes shouldn’t be dismissed outright by

Coordinator 40.I need to be more active in education. It is my fault41.Have not looked at it. wish there was a Q&A session to get answers on faith issues 42.Would like an evening women’s group

43.No wish there is more bible study for adults 44.Glad to see you start at Pre-K4 (Last parish didn’t start until kindergarten)45.N/A46.I enjoy the Adult Faith Formation 47.Mostly – would like to see more formation in house church 48.N/A49.Don’t have anyone at this time – grandkids are not baptized 50.No children currently in formation. Other religions have a better youth involvement.

Taking away some of the fun things my children loved to do. Seems all business now51.Sometimes the youth RE activities are a bit excessive 52.N/A53.Middle school program is great, my daughter looks forward to attending. Nice mix of

fun and education54.Yes, it is going in this direction more 55.Not applicable 56.No spouse prefers to worship elsewhere 57.It did when my children were younger58.Would be nice if youth group wasn’t during dinner time59.N/A60.Not currently attending due to schedules 61.All 3 of my children had wonderful and strong youth involvement 62.N/A63.Was the best for my son !!) 64.House church! And Mass of course65.Youth group66.Religious education – we came here to satisfy needs that weren’t addressed at other

nearly parishes 67.Not currently utilizing Rel Ed 68.No commit 69.Another reason for our move – we love to attend Mass with our children and

grandchildren and feel St. K is more in tune with young families and training children in the faith in an environment where they feel included, to develop pride in their church and develop a life-long devotion to their faith

70.N/A we don’t have any youngsters at home any more who would benefit from Religious Formation

71.Monica has been amazing – I love the other families we learn with – the kids all love each other

72.I have not attended Religious Ed 73.We don’t take advantage because of time/travel 74.Too new to determine 75.No, my child is a young adult and may go to Mass but is no longer active because she

feels unwelcome. She took part in Taco Tuesday but stop76.No inflexible schedule, bad experience with youth group leader77.Yes/no Mass is very good – more daily Mass (like Fri. even Sat. morning) would be

SUPER!

a. Good classes for CATHECHISTS – even more participation would be better – Good youth program & CCD classes!

78.N/A79.Yes, may need more facilities to meet educational needs

14. Is St. Kateri a welcoming community of hospitality?

Yes 233 No 9 No Opinion Comment:

1. Most of the time2. We felt welcomed here when we arrived from Germany3. Definitely 4. No we did not see this, in fact, we were put off by some of the original/established

members. 5. Yes although having visitors stand is awkward and many don’t do it. Greeters know the

regulars, why not just welcome them as they come in?6. Yes! Yes! Yes!!!7. Yes see improvements 8. More so if you are involved in ministries or house church 9. Catholic Church needs to be more welcoming to non-Catholic Christian!10.Love the greeters11.But needs more family welcoming things, playground, kids things12.Is a friendly community but I have found it hard to get to really know other families

and have a sense of true belonging13.Like the addition of cookies/fellowship after Mass14.Getting better. The welcome statement after Mass could be better worded15.Very 16.Yes, however sometimes the “opening stand and greet” is uncomfortable to single

Mass attendees17.Yes, however I’m not clear on how you get volunteers, same people serve as usher etc.

all the time. Recommend making announcements or send out flyer asking for volunteer

18.There is no outreach. I went to Tabernacle with my in-laws and multiple people came up after the service to welcome us. I have been ignored here for years

19.Yes, except some youth directors20.I don’t feel Catholic Churches in general are good at welcoming new people. The

visitors don’t know how to respond during the service 21.From the greeters to Fr. Bob to the parish family – all are made welcome 22.So-so can work on more welcoming and community based23.Very welcoming

24.Getting better. Having snacks at 11 am Mass helped keep people around to socialize25.Yes, kind of 26.Absolutely a strength! 27.Enjoy the after church refreshments 28.Ushers, greeters and priest are very nice and pleasant 29.Yes, House Church leaders used to welcome new members with covenant and

breviary. Why did we stop? 30.Have had multiple staff members and parish members welcome our family to the

parish31.For most part. Sometimes, if you don’t have the time to volunteer, I feel a slight

negativity32.I hope so we have been here so long it’s hard to say what new people feel. We try to

welcome them. 33.Evident by amount of people who stay after Mass for socializing 34.Sometimes 35.Feel welcomed by all36.Not previously 37.No, when we first arrived we found the parish to be very insular based on “originals”

and not really open to new arrivals38.No, people mostly talk to people they already know 39.Yes I don’t care much for applauding visitors. Instead, ask name, visiting or seeking

new parish, then welcome info40.Yes, like revived xxxxx on cookies added to coffee and drinks to draw community

together after Mass41.So-so greeters are always nice42.No except for greeters and bulletin people – cliquish 43.Yes I guess if one was more involved with the church, otherwise , you are left alone44.Very welcoming 45.Yes? No? In the beginning a new family would be visited by a member of their house

church- after calling of course. If they did not want a visit, they would have our phone number, if they had questions etc.

46.Yes, Debi does a great job!47.Greeters are very welcoming48.Definitely, feel welcome 49.Welcome visitors every Mass 50.Can be hard to form friendships or extend relationships beyond church 51.Yes, comments on visitors during Mass52.Pretty welcoming 53.Very much so! It feels as if more people have greeted us in the few weeks we’ve been

here than in the 7 years we’ve been at St. J54.Yes, very much55.Ok but individuals need to reach out to new members 56.But calling out visitors and new families instead of just welcoming them can be

embarrassing. Don’t ask them to stand. 57.Yes…but we can always do more! Good that we recognize guests – how about a once a

month or quarterly “Invite a Friend” with social/snacks after 11 am Mass?

58.Yes, now has become59.Yes, why I come here rather than another church closer to me.60.Yes, greeters should wear name tags, would help if we had welcoming coffee after

Mass to welcome new and bring old together

15. Is St. Kateri a community that reaches outside of its parish to those in need?

Yes 233 No 2 Don’t know 42Check all that apply:Ministry NumberPoor 218Homeless 137Other Churches 88Prison 217Ecology 38Civic Activities (Scouts, KoC) 105People in Other Countries 187

Comment:1. Ecology – Needed more!! 2. I would like to see more active KoC program. Sometimes the myriad ministries seem to

be too big to manage. 3. Unsure of relationship with scouts. Is there more we could do for local homeless? 4. The Haiti Ministry is one of the best things about this church 5. We could do more, sponsor scout religious knot program. Regular rotation at soup

kitchen6. Prison cookies 7. From when present, this is what I know of (she checked Yes, then Prison and People in

other countries) 8. So-so, I could write a book9. I feel we help a lot of people in the community with the thrift store and food pantry10.Yes, PORT 11.There is not a lot of actual involvement, but financially. I know there is an ecology

committee but have not seen much done actually12.We are involved but it may not be noticed publically 13.I would like to see more ecumenical activities 14.Would love to see the youth be given opportunities to meet youth from other parishes15.Haiti 16.Thrift store is great…but there isn’t a clear visible connection to the store17.Yes but don’t know how far and frequent , not sure how often, frequent, who18.I think we do a wonderful job with this19.Haiti 20.Could do more community events to draw others in. heard from people at Run for the

Sun. More service events – ways to help

21.Don’t know – seems that it does but haven’t been here long enough to answer honestly)

22.Also through Catholic Heart23.All of these exist but often it’s all done by a few – our impression is that many of these

have been in the parish a long time and new people are not participating as much24.Great job 25.Not sure how present we are in other countries which is important to me 26.Don’t see much for the homeless or other parishes 27.Yes Civic activities loss of scout pack was unfortunate loos like beginnings of KofC is

promising 28.No, except long distance 29.Soup kitchen 30.The Haiti ministry is a great thing31.We32.We’ve volunteered at the parish food bank33.I would like to see ore interaction with our neighbor churches. Tell us if we participate

with the above ??? (?? Were homeless, other churches, ecology, civic activities)34.I feel that we are very active community 35.Would be great to hear more about what the thrift shop does and also to do more in

collaboration with other churches of other faiths 36.Dinner for needy?37.It should work with the poor and homeless 38.My husband is a KofC, we’ll need information when we join39.I love that you have a thrift shop for the less fortunate 40.We support St. Vincent’s as well as St. Luke’s (Episcopal) in downtown NN; the Haiti

ministry is wonderful! As is our involvement with the Federal Prison KAIROS Ecumenical ministry. How about a Catholic ministry in downtown NN Jail?

41.Any thought to a meal training ministry for those going through surgery, birth, or death in the family?

16. Is St. Kateri a diverse parish?Yes 177 No 72 ? 1 Comment:

1. No not really but I believe this church is representative of Catholics in America 2. No not by choice – just the demographic of area 3. No? perhaps yes considering our community4. No but it reflects its community which is not diverse either5. Diversity – term of parties OR diversity – team of parties (couldn’t decipher any

better)6. No. Very white. Very affluent. Very heterosexual. Why? 7. Somewhat, not very diverse8. No, not very 9. No not really 10.Sort of 11.No. There is not much diversity in the local area, so not the parish’s fault…12.It’s as diverse as the population of the county

13.Yes socioeconomics yes 14.Yes mostly white community but everyone is welcome 15.Yes, but not as much as I thought it would be16.No, probably due to geography/demographics17.I think we try but we could improve 18.Depends on how broadly you define the term , age and gender yes, ethnically very

small19.Don’t know 20.More diverse than some less than others 21.Slightly 22.Not really 23.Getting more so – all are welcome 24.The parish is mostly white community nothing is offered in Spanish or other languages 25.We are not located in a very diverse neighborhood26.I see mostly white 27.No, our population is pretty much from York/Poquoson 28.Yes, for Catholic29.No, not something that can be changed, it’s just the area we live in30.Doesn’t “look” like it but there is no evidence of non-inclusion – intentionally 31.No, very few minorities32.Yes, growing in diversity33.Somewhat 34.More and more with different ages and culture 35.No York county isn’t diverse36.Yes, not as diverse as other local parishes37.Yes, per the local community38.No, mostly affluent and white39.No Poquoson /upper middle class seems to be the heart of the parish 40.On casual appearances doesn’t seem so, but I’m not familiar with parish enough to

judge if diversity of throughout parish 41.Reflects the demographics of the region42.It is diverse for the location 43.Could be expanded44.No we could be more diverse 45.Not particularly but somewhat. This can’t really be forced, can it?46.N/A47.No not enough48.Not really 49.Depends on definition of diversity, age and family demogr yes 50.No, looking around I don’t see much diversity 51.No depends on how this defined. Not welcoming to Hispanics for example 52.I see more diversity every year53.No much 54.I find this to be a function of the community and not the fault of the parish 55.Yes, need an American flag 56.Yes and no, our area has more expensive housing: not as diverse as other areas

57.It reflects the communities of Poquoson and York county which isn’t really diverse58.Not sure 59.Product of neighborhood 60.Not enormously but we feel all are encouraged61.Yes, barely62.Somewhat yes63.No we have a few minorities. The disabled are not very visible64.Yes, but not much65.Not very66.Though predominately Caucasian all are welcome and some diversity is evident 67.Yes, I see some diverse people every Mass68.Yes, for the area69.Becoming so 70.No just look around – but we are pretty reflective of Tabb – sing a few spirituals or a

Spanish song monthly. And hazarding a guess, we are overwhelmingly white, and, consequently, Republican, i.e. York County VA

71.Yes, recently 72.Fairly for this area73.No, doesn’t appear diverse 74.Yes, still some work in getting more attendees, participation

17. What do you see as St. Kateri’ s main role in the community?

215. Evang.

Additional Comments:1. Would like to see a better backdrop to Sunday Mass altar. The drapes are not very

welcoming. 2. The parish needs a full time, young, paid youth minister. This sets the foundation for

parish growth and pulls people into life-long mission and participation3. In looking at expenditures – could save on electricity by only using A/C or heat in

offices being used only when entire church is not in session. May need a zoned A/C system but would pay itself off in the long run

4. Would very much like to be involved in planning process as a volunteer. Considerable planning experience.

5. We have an adult son living with us. Every other week-end has children come 2 boys (5, 14 years old) and 1 girl (15 years old). Would like to see playing games for senior citizens like bridge, mahjong, book club.

6. Get kneelers so those who want to use them can to display the reverent attitude they would like to have. Encourage quiet before Mass starts so those who want to better prepare themselves can. We now have altar servers (Great!), let’s promote this with robes, etc.

7. I travel a lot so do not always make it to Mass here, though we still contribute regularly. I know the church is the people, rather than the structure, but I feel closer spiritually in a nice building. The poor villages in Europe all have dedicated worship places. I see our church evolving as we have been here and I like that.

8. We would like to see the Altar Servers wearing robes and sitting next to the Priest on the altar. My sons both had this opportunity growing up and made them feel more a part of the Mass.

a. Add the prayer responses to the weekly handout with the songs. It took 50 years to learn the old ones and I still say them wrong. Responses out of habit.

b. At Easter I would like to include the Litany of the Saints to the Easter Vigil9. Young teenagers have no opportunity to be involved and the youth group made our

teens feel like Sunday night was a burden. Shift the focus so they are invested in the Mass. Why not have a teen Mass where they are the readers, cantors, etc.? Teens 13-16 can do so little.

a. The pastor and his humor and short homilies are appreciated. 10.Can we build a “proper” sanctuary space that lends itself to a bit more reverence and

tradition? We love Fr. Bob! 11.Our family attempted to join the parish years ago upon our move. The office lady

“Elaine or Debbie” can’t recall, did not make it an easy task. We had quite small children and could not make it in for the interviews of “acceptance”. I did not find this very Christian-like or welcoming. We decided to inquire at other churches. I/we love this church but it was not welcoming at all until recently with the change of priest. Although I/we do not know if this “interview” policy still remains.

12.We reflected on the questions provided last week – we are disappointed that they are not here to answer.

a. One of the things to enhance the prayer of the mass is music. The music should enhance the worship/prayer and not be a performance. Music that the

community is not familiar with or cannot sing does little to enhance worship. It would be better and less distracting to do without.

13.The acoustics of the church is not the best. a. If you sit in the back on the sides it is very hard to hear. b. I love the books and CDs. The family room is great.

14.Strengths: Youth Program, Social Justice Programs, Welcoming/flexible a. Weaknesses: we could use books instead of printing some sheets to be more

environmentally conscious 15.We would like to see the importance of the blessing of the body and Christ be more

celebrate; bell ringing, etc. a. Also the choir needs to sing songs everyone can sing. The choir itself should be

moved the MAIN focus should be the altar. 16.I would love to see a donation base fundraiser for foam kneeling pads for this parish. I

have heard people in this parish never knowing that kneeling/showing reverence is a part of Mass. Also standing after receiving the Eucharist and not sitting until the Eucharist is in the Tabernacle. Please take into consideration the kneeling pads. In general, become more traditional.

17.Suggest having parents get baked goods after Mass for their children to avoid chaos of kids running to cookies and taking a handful for touching them and putting them back. Also this would encourage adults to socialize and not heading to parking lot sending kids to get their snack

18.I think we need more local outreach, we help a lot of causes outside our area, but not enough inside

19.Have you ever had a book club? I am only here ½ year June through Nov 20.We also would like to say that the expectations that anyone could give thoughtful and

complete answers to this survey in 13 minutes and then switch off and immerse oneself in eth Eucharist is ridiculous. I’d like to use a more polite word, but, well, we only had 13 minutes

21.Need to shut down the drinks on the kitchen bar before Mass. Adults and children should not be drinking or eating before Mass. It’s not Taco Bell

22.I note the budget shortage. If 200 families each gave an extra $2.00 each week for 52 weeks, we would have $20,800. Hope I did that correctly!

23. Just work on the basic Mass

a. Stop the wine service from one glass, just stop the wine

24. I am new to this church and would love to see something for my age 56, divorced, single. There was only things (activities) at St. Joan of Arc for everything but single divorced middle age people. No need to call, but if necessary Ann Hirst, 520-333-9368

25. Mission Statement: to love and treat community the way we are loved by Jesus by providing the below services:

1. Community service 2. Religious education 3. Mass
