Heřmanice

The picturesque village of Heřmanice u Frýdlantu is located near the borders with Poland and Germany. The path to know-ledge about the glass-making industry begins here. The local glassworks offer to acquaint visitors with their whole operati-on, including the furnaces, glass engraving, the sample shop and extensive glass and jewellery gallery. The studio specialises in

original handmade glass products, from glass jewellery through utility glass to glass monumental objects. The main technologi-cal procedure used is so-called glass fusing. This is a fairly new technological proce-dure fusing glass of identical physical pro-perties of various thicknesses and colour combinations.

The studio’s products can be seen in this country and also abroad. Its most impor-tant works include the glass baptismal font in the Cathedral in Rotterdam, lighting fix-tures at a hotel in Singapore and monu-mental chandeliers in Dallas.

Frýdlant

A massive castle and chateau stand in the middle of this town on a basalt cliff above the Směda River. This monument repre-sents a combination of mediaeval Gothic castle and Renaissance chateau and is usu-ally linked to the name of Albrecht of Wal-lenstein, who was the owner of the castle during the Thirty Years War. It was also the first castle museum in Central Europe, which was opened in 1801. The chateau owns collections of porcelain and glass, furniture and chateau furnishings, an ex-tensive collection of weapons dating from the Hussite Wars to the 19th century, the chateau picture gallery containing works by Baroque masters and a unique collec-tion of pipes, which are open to visitors.Beer has been brewed below the chateau in the chateau brewery since the 14th century. Today visitors can taste a bottom–fermented lager made from water origina-ting from within the Jizera Mountains and Czech malt and hops.

The Deaconry Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross is another important monument of Frýdlant and is a witness to town’s whole history. The church was built by Italian architects in 1551. The church is a mixture of several various styles as a result of several periods of rebuilding. The best known and most valuable of its inte-rior furnishings is the monumental burial chapel with the family tomb of the Redern family dating from 1566, which is one of the most beautiful Renaissance monu-ments in Bohemia.Visitors to the town can also see a unique mechanical nativity scene, which was built by native farmer Gustav Simon. The work, which took over 60 years to make, inclu-des over 100 moving figures of people and animals controlled by strings. You can find the nativity scene not far from T.G Masa-ryk Square on Zahradní Street. The Wallenstein Celebrations, the Sum-mer Jazz Workshop and the International Children’s Song Festival have all become traditional in Frýdlant. The area surround-ing Frýdlant is lovely and is a starting point

for setting out for the Jizera Mountains, which are an attraction for all hikers, cyc-lists and mountaineers.

Hejnice

The town of Hejnice lies not far from Frýdlant towards the east. This town is a well-known place of pilgrimage with an im-posing and important church monument, the Baroque Cathedral of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary dating from 1725. Visitors

can see the valuable wooden Gothic Black Madonna sculpture dating from 1380, the Marian Column dating from 1695, the arti-stic Baroque sculptures and wayside shri-ne. Concerts by leading Czech and foreign musicians and ensembles are held in the cathedral every month.Visitors can also visit the workshop ma-king utility and decorative products from glass and ceramics in Hejnice. The studio is located only a short distance from the cathedral, right over the Směda River and offers products bearing the Jizera Moun-tain Regional Product symbol.
