CONTENTS NEWSLETTER

I hope this newsletter finds all of you doing well. It is already October. Where did this year go? Christmas is just around the corner.

The past few months have been very busy and we look for the rest of the year to remain the same. With the exception of Thanksgiving we do not have any major holidays between now and Christmas. With the way freight has been moving, and from what we have been seeing, I do not foresee any slowdown between now and Christmas. I believe that we will see what used to be a traditional 4th quarter this year. When I say “what used to be”, I mean that prior to the ‘08 Recession, the 4th quarter used to be the busiest quarter of the year. Retailers and

all customers were ramping up for the Christmas Rush. In the past 5 or 6 years we have not seen that. I believe that will change in 2014.

I feel that going into 2015 and even into the next few years we will see a much improved economy that will produce higher freight volumes. This is long overdue.

Some of you may have already heard the news, but if not, here you go. We were recently awarded a substantial increase in Paccar (Kenworth/Peterbilt) business on a recent bid in which we participated. The majority of the new business that we were awarded was business out of the Southeast and Midwest part of the United States going to Calexico. We were also awarded a substantial number of lanes coming out of Calexico going back to these same areas. We were aggressive in going after this business because we wanted to increase our length of haul out of these areas, especially the southeast. We know that long length of haul results in more miles and more days under the same load without having to load and unload every day. Loading and unloading time only results in wasted hours of service sitting at the dock.

We have had a number of drivers join DHT in the past few months that came to us because of our long length of haul and because we are not a regional carrier. Most of them came to us from fleets that had an average length of haul of 500 miles or less. Our average length of haul is attractive, being approximately 1425. Some of these drivers were employed with DHT before, but left for whatever reason; usually to be home more by running in a regional fleet. However, even when paid 4 or 5 cents more per mile they could not make the money they were making here as a result of the length of haul. It is our goal to get our length of haul to 1500 miles and above.

Driver Appreciation Week was earlier in the month of September. I hope that most of you were able to get through one of the terminals on a day when they were having lunch, goodies, or refreshments. I want all of our drivers to know that I appreciate all that you do every week throughout the year and not just on this one week that is set aside. I know that we have some of the best professional drivers in the industry here at DHT. I also appreciate your family. Their job to provide you with support while you are out on the highway and keep the home fires burning is extremely important.

In closing, I pray that God will bless each of you and your family and that he keeps you safe in every mile you travel.

Keep on Trucking Safely!!

Joe Herman

As we come into the final quarter of 2014, freight remains steady and we are continuing to improve our length of haul with new lanes. At DHT we believe that a longer length of haul will keep our drivers moving more of the time and eliminate the need to load and unload each day which eats up time you could be driving. We will continue to have loads that are not at our goal of 1450 miles or above, but the reason for this is in order to bump trucks to areas where longer length of haul freight is available. The Dallas area is a prime example of this. We realize that a lot of companies are running regional lanes that allow for drivers to be home more often but have heard of many situations where this really hits the amount of miles they are getting due to sitting and waiting for relays or simply spending a lot of their day loading and unloading. We strive to hit a happy medium where we can provide you with the miles you need as well as the home time you deserve. As we move forward we will continue to increase our length of haul so you can keep the wheels turning as much as possible.

Electronic logs are becoming more familiar to all of us and we are now starting to see productivity move higher. All studies show that when companies switch to e-logs there is a period of time where productivity falls as drivers, dispatchers, and planners adjust to this new information and how to use it to make the most of a driver’s time. Although we still have a learning curve ahead of us, we are now miles ahead of companies that have not adopted e-logs but will be forced to do so by regulations in the near future. We greatly appreciate everyone for their willingness to learn this new technology and continuing to make it work to our benefit. Although productivity does fall initially, the same studies show that over time not only is it gained back but actually is improved.

Finally I would like to leave all of you with an update on new equipment. As we wind down 2014, we have upgraded the Fleet significantly. We will finish the year with a strong push to replace an additional 30 of our older trailers and plan to continue this

into 2015. We are now trading in 2011 trucks and will also continue to upgrade the Fleet in 2015. We pride ourselves on running good equipment that keeps you, the driver, moving and allows us to provide excellent service to our customers. As we move into the future we plan to continue to only get better. Until next time I wish all of you the best. Blake Grindstaff

Electronic Logs Becoming More Familiar OPERATIONS

Keeping You MovingI hope everyone is doing well… Fall is in the air and it’s hard to be-lieve we are now in the final stretch of 2014.

I want to bring you up to speed on a few things we as a company and the sales team are working that will help our drivers get the things needed to get you the miles, get you paid and get you home…

As Joe Herman has mentioned in his weekly address we have been awarded a significant amount of business from PACCAR that will do several things, with one being longer lengths of haul. We should see an additional 30 plus loads a week from the Midwest and Southeast finalizing in Calexico. By the time you read this we should be in full swing.

Another focus is trying to reduce the time you are not moving, laying over or waiting to get loaded or unloaded. We call this dwell-time. I know if the wheels on your truck aren’t turning, nobody and espe-cially YOU are making money. Our objective is to get you loaded as closely to where you off-load and have stacked freight sitting either at a DHT yard or customer site for evenings and weekend deliveries to keep you moving.

We are also replacing most of the shorter-haul business we took on during the slow times to keep trucks moving, which will also help in keeping you moving with more miles, even on holidays and week-ends.

I believe things have and will continue to look good for the trucking industry and that is a great thing for Danny Herman Trucking and our drivers.

As always please be safe as you travel and stay alert and rested!!

God Bless you and your family!

Making it Through the TransitionsWESTERN REGION

Hello to all. It’s hard to believe that another fall is upon us already. I think we have a lot of things to be thankful for, including the company’s anniversary, our recent awards that were earned mostly by our drivers given by the Tennessee Trucking Association, and many other things that have come our way this year.

I recently spoke to some of the new people joining the company in orientation. I asked the group what had helped them make their decisions to come to DHT, when we know there are other good companies to choose from as well. The answers were typical of what I most always hear in one form or another. The answer we hear most is that a potential applicant has usually asked one or more of our current drivers their opinion about DHT, and that the consensus is that DHT is a good place for drivers to work and put down roots. Followed by that answer, there are other responses such as team running, and our defined lanes are always mentioned. Another factor that’s beginning to be brought up more often is our average length of haul being 1450 miles.

Our industry is and has been transitioning through many aspects that have affected long haul drivers as well as companies. While we work hard to retain all drivers, we do have some folks that leave the company for reasons that aren’t always company related. We are thankful for our lower than industry average turnover. I want to commend and encourage the driving population of DHT to remain diligent and allow all of the various departments of the company to help you adjust to all of the requirements that seem to keep coming at all of us in this industry. I was never fortunate enough to drive for a company that had the knowledge or the capacity and also the care to help with things that come at drivers that must be dealt with and conformed to.

I can also still relate, as a driver does, to how it feels when new things just keep coming that have to be done. I hope that each of you recognize the value of working in the DHT system; that you are with a surviving company that will help you achieve what is required, rather than throw a bunch of literature in your direction and tell everyone it’s sink or swim, and then you are left to panic and wonder if

you’ll be able to still provide for the family at home or look for another carrier to sign on with until it happens again.

Danny Herman Trucking has and will always provide the professional tools and people to help every driver within the system meet all requirements of all of the DOT and all other entities that are involved with interstate transportation and commercial driving.

I wanted to share in this edition of the newsletters, from my perspective, one of the more important things you can place value on since coming to work at DHT. The requirements are and will be the same for all carriers, “but there’s a huge difference amongst carriers in how it’s handled and achieved”!

Thank you for reading and shiny sides up!

Donald Hopson

We would like to say welcome to all the new Drivers! We have added some new faces to the Mountain City Terminal. Wanda Greer and

Beth Henson have joined us as Administrative Assistants and Eric Michael has joined us in Dispatch.

If you come to the Mountain City Terminal, please remember to wear your ID Badge and note that if you do not have an ID Badge, you will

need to wear a visitor’s badge until Safety can make one for you. If you need any forms please let Safety or the receptionist know and they

will be glad to help you. If you need help with your cab card you will need to see Betty Jean or your fleet manager. Remember if you see

anything suspicious while out on the road or at one of the terminals, call Dispatch or Safety immediately. If it is an emergency, call 911.

Thanks for all that you do and we are happy you are a part of the DHT family.

Scale Tickets Needed for T-Called LoadsThanksgiving is just around the corner and so is adverse weather. These are also the times where we start seeing more families out on the road. We want to remind all of you to be extra cautious this time of year.

Out of El Paso, freight has been pretty steady. Most of the time we have found ourselves looking for swaps and T-calls in order to move some of this freight around, and that’s a good thing. The more freight we have for our drivers, the better. We also wanted to remind you to please continue to bring a certified scale ticket anytime you’re T-calling a load in El Paso that is ending in a different city. We’ve been having a few issues with drivers forgetting to leave scale ticket for their T-calls, especially on weekends when EP dispatch is not here. Once again, thank your for everything you do out on the road and please be SAFE!

So What is New in Laredo? Laredo, TX

We hope this finds everyone and their loved ones well and in good health! It is getting close to the end of the year and we are still moving forward with a successful year. We have been steady for most of the year, and we will continue to work on keeping the freight coming in so it keeps everyone rolling. So what is new in Laredo? We have new customers that have been added to our list, we are going into new areas and some existing customers are sending us to new areas. We have recently had some minor additions to our terminal with the new electric gate, and we will be working on better lighting around our building. They will also be working on the broken area that we have at the entrance of the building. Please enter and exit the premises with caution. We kindly ask that everyone be cautious when backing up and avoid hitting the fence and the other structures that might be around you. We are still working on small upgrades and will continue to do so in the near future. When coming into Laredo, the entrance is now set up counter clock wise, so make sure and continue to get your truck and trailer inspected before anything else is done. It is important that any issues with your truck or trailer are addressed in a timely manner. Please write down everything that is wrong with the equipment. This will allow us time to plan ahead. Also please inform Laredo Dispatch in the event that you will be going into the shop.

When coming to Laredo please give us a call when you are close in the general Texas area we do ask that every check in to give you instruction on what to do with your south bound loads, all of this loads must be delivered to better serve our customers and upon deliver would finish your complete trip if you have any questions give us a call we will be more than glad to answer any of your questions. We know that at times it is impossible to deliver or pick up your loads due to your hours of service or unit being in the shop. We know that safety will always come first. Going forward if loads are T-called in the yard and our local driver makes the delivery for you while you reset or take your break, we will ask you to help us with a shuttle/pickup before you leave on your next load. This will not only help us to

keep our customers happy and enable us to provide good service, but it would also be fair for anyone else that had to deliver their load. We also have a couple of customers that are receiving freight over the weekends.

Please continue to help us with the verification of your trailer seals. We have been working hard to keep the driver room clean and we ask your assistance to pick up (do not leave pizza boxes lying or any item that is too big for the trash can) around before you leave. Please ensure that all trailers that are drop off and picked up are sealed. Also, please make sure to always leave us copy of the signed bills of lading so we can keep in file. Report any issues or any facility damages, as this will help us keep things in order. Thank you once more for all you do!!!

Reminder to all: Once the truck/trailer has been taken into the shop work area, please go to the driver waiting room upstairs. This will allow the mechanics to work more efficiently without interruptions and will also prevent injuries.

What drives you – Your Emotions or Your Character?

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

Dick Biggs , Seminar leader and former journalist with The Atlanta Constitution and Associated Press, wrote “The greatest gap in life is the one between knowing and doing.”

Life would certainly be easier – and success much easier to come by – if all it took to achieve was to KNOW the right things and DECIDE to do them, right? But the truth is a decision is just one bookend of achievement. The other is discipline to see it through. Many individuals make great decisions but fail to accomplish their plan of achievement because they do not manage their plan to completion. Decisions are simply first steps, it is follow through a step at a time, a day at a time leads to the checkered flag and victory lane.

That’s where character comes in. Stirred emotions may ignite a great decision. But character is what keeps us going, even when the going becomes difficult.

In Developing the Leader Within You, John Maxwell points out some important differences between character-driven and emotion-driven people:

All of us, I think, are a mixture of both. People who can keep their emotions normalized can add extra value to their character side. God created us body, soul and spirit. When we allow Jesus Christ to purify our heart then our purpose can begin to be packed with power, passion and great emotions all embodied in a life of integrity. Emotion is not bad, God created it, but it has to be guarded and guided in truth.

Could you use some guidance in in this area? Consider contacting your Connect Care Chaplain, they can help.

Character-driven people...1. Do right, then feel good.2. Are commitment driven.3. Make principle-based decisions.4. Let action control attitude.5. Believe it, then see it.6. Create momentum.7. Ask, “What are my responsibilities?8. Continue when problems arise.9. Are steady.10. Are leaders.

Emotion-emotion driven people...1. Feel good, then do right.2. Are convenience-driven.3. Make popular decisions.4. Let attitude control action.5. See it, then believe it.6. Wait for momentum.7. Ask, “What are my rights?”8. Quit when problems arise.9. Are moody.10. Are followers.

DHTL would like to congratulate Terry Arias and her beautiful granddaughter, Alyssa. Alyssa was crowned Miss Austin Quinceanera and is featured on the cover of Quinceanera magazine. Alyssa will be 15 this month and participates regularly in local pageants with numerous accolades to her credit. She is no stranger to the stage as she has been competing since she was just a toddler. Born in El Paso, TX, the young beauty started competing when she was just a toddler. Her family moved to Austin, TX when she was about 6 years old where she continues to stay active in not only pageants but is also as an athlete. She is on a regular cheer squad and plays both volleyball and basketball.

DHTL is so very proud of Terry and Alyssa. What an accomplishment to reach the cover of a magazine at such a young age! I am sure this is just the beginning for her. Thank you, Terry, for sharing her story with us. Blessings and congratulations to the Arias family.

Daniel CookVP of Maintenance

I spent the first week of October visiting the Laredo terminal. It is good for me to be in the field and see what is really going on in the shops. I must say we have built a pretty good team in maintenance for the Laredo terminal. The guys are young and willing to learn and willing to work. In 115 degree weather too! We have covered a lot of ground here in a short amount of time and still have plenty of room for growth. With that being said, I am confident that Xavier and any of the Maintenance staff will try their best to accommodate your needs when you are in Laredo. I feel that my visit was productive and I know

you will notice the improvements in the people and quality of work coming from this terminal.

Next on the To-Do List: I need everybody to start thinking about winter. If you have not tested the APU heater yet, take a minute to do so. If it does not work correctly report it to maintenance. We want you to stay warm. The shops will be stocked with diesel fuel treatment (anti gel) by the end of the month. Stop in and pick some up. We don’t want any freeze ups this year. The door is always open in Maintenance and we are here to help you. Be safe.

in and check the box that states you have seen it and understand it. Until we see you again, please drive safe, do the speed limit and wear those seatbelts. Only you the drivers can bring the Unsafe Driving score down by not adding anymore violations.

Thanks, Steve Frantz

I hope this newsletter finds you well. It sure looks like fall is in the air the days and nights are getting a little cooler and the leaves are starting to change color. This is a pretty time of year here in the mountains of east TN. I just don’t care much for what comes after fall when the snow starts to come down.

Speaking of winter, that time will be here soon and it’s time to gear up for those adverse driving conditions. I will be putting some videos on the DHT University to go over Winter Driving just as a reminder to you all, getting some refresher training and tips about how to drive in those conditions is never a bad thing. Always remember that you are the one that manages the truck, if the weather conditions are bad, park the truck and let dispatch know where you are and what the conditions are like. With information you provide we can relay messages to the rest of the fleet so they can stop, go around or otherwise avoid that area. Our accident rate seems to decrease in the winter because everyone’s awareness is at its peak. Let’s have a good winter this year and nobody get hurt. The most

important thing is safety first. We want you to make it home to your families.

CSA UPDATE We received our last update on 10/5/14 and we are over the threshold on “Unsafe Driving”. As you know the threshold for that category is 60% and we came in at 63%, which puts us “Under Alert” with the FMCSA. Our inspection value (the score the DOT sees out in the field) has gone from 26 (pass) to 58, which is optional next level of inspection warranted. That means that we are going to see more inspections at the scales until we can get that score back down under the threshold. This is the result of all the moving violations we have been getting. The big one is speeding and seatbelts. You are required to follow all the Federal, State and local laws in the area you are driving in. We have recently put out the new unsafe driving policy that you were ask to sign off on, it is posted on the DHT University. If you have not done that, please do. I have included a copy in this newsletter as well. However, we still need for all of you to sign-
