This is a story of two best friends. Someone will fall for the other. The other is madly in love with another. Who falls for who? And who is the third wheel? The most intriguing question is: despite of this, how can their story be The Greatest Love Ever Told?

ONE

Narrator’s POV

“One! Two! Three!” James and Ann screamed right before they jumped into the water. The abandoned lighthouse in the middle of the sea was like a little island that served as their paradise. There, they could do whatever they would want. They were away from all the people they did not want to see.

James and Ann rose up after diving. “Whew! That was awesome!” James exclaimed. “I know!” Ann agreed. They swam and enjoyed the view of their paradise because after this year, they would be leaving it, for good. After an hour or so, they went inside the lighthouse. It was decorated inside. It looked like a fancy little house. It was so colorful. There were drawings of dresses and many other things posted all around the place. There, they dried themselves and changed their clothes in a small division which looked like a dressing room.

“I really hope we could stay here forever, James,” Ann said. James looked at her and smiled as he was shaking water off his hair. “I was hoping the same way too. It is just that we can’t” he cheered. “Yeah. I know,” she replied as she held a huge fancy box. She opened it and saw things which are treasure to both of them. James took the small doll. “I remember this. You were so mad at me because mine..” he said as he took the other one. “… is prettier that yours,” he reminisced. Ann grinned. “I still couldn’t believe that were more creative that me that time,” she laughed. “But look at you now , you are one step closer to being a famous fashion designer. Next year, you can formally go to a fashion school” he praised. “Thank you. Thank you” she said as she gracefully bowed. She saw the piano pencil case. She took a battery from their supplies and put them on. She played a couple of notes. “Happy Birthday to you,” she started singing. “James smiled. “How could I forget that? That was the first time we saw each other!” he said like it was a light bulb moment. “I can’t believe we’ve known each other for six years now!” she said. “Me too!” James replied. He noticed the little chess board that they used to play on. “Oh, I missed this. We don’t use this anymore,” he said. “Want to play?” she asked. “Absolutely,” he replied.

As usual, Ann lost. She never won unless James would let her. Chess has always been his expertise.

nanny. He has been with him since he was nine. The three of them were like a family. Edward has always been there for them. “Aww! I haven’t beaten up him yet! I lost the first game!” Ann retorted. “Dear, no matter how many games you play, he will never let you win!” he teased. James chuckled while Ann frowned. “Fine. Someday, I am going to beat you!” she said to James angrily. “I’ll be waiting for that day then,” James replied with his killer smile.

They were about to leave the place when Ann saw the box where they put their letters. “Hey, wait!” she called. “Why?” James asked. “Let’s make another letter!” she said as she was holding the box. “Okay then. Let’s bring it here when we come back” James agreed.

They left the small island with a motorboat that Edward controlled. “We’re here!” Edward said. James and Ann immediately got out of the boat. They raced until they have reached their bicycles. They rode it until the village. Edward followed them patiently. They were about to approach Ann’s place when they saw Ann’s father heading to his car. He was bringing his luggage. “Dad?” asked Ann as she started biking faster. She was not able to talk to him because he immediately drove without saying goodbye to her.

“Mom!” she called aloud as she looked for her mom. “Honey” her mom, weeping, answered. “What happened? Where did dad go?” she asked worriedly. “He left us,” Dina answered. “For good” she added. “What do you mean he left us? Why would he?” she asked as tears started to fall off her eyes.

JAMES’ POV

Edward and I followed Ann as she rushed to their house. I was supposed to eavesdrop but Edward held my arms. He said I was not supposed to listen. Ann and her mom should talk first before I butt in. I agreed. We left their house.

“I think there is something wrong” I said as we rode our bicycles. “Maybe. Just call her later. Ask and comfort her” Edward replied.

ANN’s POV

I couldn’t believe daddy has done that. All the while I thought we were a happy family. My phone rang. It was James. I was not even sure if I would want to answer him but I did anyway. “Hello, Ann?” he asked. It was just after three or five seconds before he knew I was on the line for I was not talking. “Are you okay?” he asked. “I guess,” I coldly replied. “What happened? Would you mind sharing it to me? Maybe I could help,” he said. I was hesitant because I feel ashamed. But James is my best friend. I know that I could say to him everything.

“My dad left us for another girl,” I started. Right after saying that, I cried again. My heart was really broken. James, on the other hand, patiently listened to my story even if it was hard since I was crying. We talked the whole night. I did not know who slept first while we were still on the phone. One thing I am sure of, I felt okay after talking to him.

TWO

JAMES’ POV

I really think Ann feels devastated. It was unexpected that their almost perfect family would crash. Suddenly, I remembered my dad. Where could he be right now? Is he okay? Right. I don’t even care. Why do I bother to think about him.

I went downstairs and I saw Ann’s mom. She was talking to my mother on the living

Page 3: To the Beach

room. “Good Morning” I greeted them then I headed to where Ann is. She was with Lauren, my older sister. “Are you okay now, Ann?” I asked. “Yeah. I was thinking you were right. That we shouldn’t run after a person who does not want us anymore. Anyway, you guys are here for mom and I, still, right?” she positively said . “Definitely” Lauren and I said.

I feel happy that even if they are brokenhearted, Ann and her mom managed to think positively. I know it is hard, but they decided to move on.

Months have passed and they have been okay. All of us have been okay. There was just one thing that was not right. School. I wonder why people don’t like Ann. She is pretty and everything, but girls care so much to bully her.

One day, we were waiting for Edward to pick us up when Ann went to the comfort room. Edward came but Ann has not come back yet. We got worried so we followed her. “Ann?” we called as we knock on the door. We heard her voice, she was crying for help by screaming at the top of her lungs. Edward forcedly opened the door. We found her on the sitting on the floor. Her hands were tied and her mouth is covered with a handkerchief. We immediately ran towards her and untied her hands. “What happened?” I asked. “The girls…” she answered. I knew it, the bunch of girls who were deeply insecure with her did this. “Alright. You are safe now, Ann. We are going to get home” Edward said as she carried Ann. We went straight to the car and we brought her home.

ANN’s POV

I was really scared when those girls came. They were really mad at me and I don’t even know why. Was is because I was chosen to design the gown of our muse? Or was it because I am very close to James? Thank god James and Edward came. Else, I would still be there until now. I’m really lucky to have such best friend. I don’t know what to do without him by my side.

NARRATOR’s POV

A couple of months have passed again and graduation is near. James and Ann are leaving the town for good. They will be leaving in the city with their own families.

“Ann, James. I have something important to tell to you two” Edward started. They both knew that there was something wrong. But they did not know it would make them feel horrible. “I would not be joining you in the city anymore,” he started. “What?” James asked. It was obvious that was deeply upset by what he just heard. “Why Edward? I thought you are going to be with us forever? You promised!” Ann lamented. “I know. I’m very sorry. I know I promised. But I think I should start my own life too. I want to have a family, kids,” he explained. “Aren’t we a family to you? We have always been good kids” James coldly answered. Edwards tapped his shoulder. “You have been wonderful kids. I am very happy that I worked for you. I got to know you and Ann. I will cherish every moment that we three had together,” Edward said. James and Ann were so quiet. They were really upset.

They ignored Edward for days. Until James saw Edward from afar. He was talking with his girlfriend. He looked sad. It seemed that they were breaking up.

After an hour or so, James approached Edward. He looked happy but James knew he was faking it. “Hey! Good thing you came, I have a good news for you and Ann,” he said as he tried to smile. “You did not have to that Edward,” James said. “Did what?” he asked. “Don’t play with me. I know you broke up with her so you could go with us,” he replied. “But I thought you wanted me to?” Edward wondered. “You must be kidding me. You did not raise us to be such selfish brats. Of course we want you to be

Page 4: To the Beach

happy” James said as he smiled. Ann appeared and she was holding a long white dress. “He’s right. We really want you to be happy,” she said as she handed him the dress. “What is this?” he asked. “It’s the gown I made a few weeks ago. I think that will suit your girlfriend well. I really hope she could wear that on your wedding” Ann said. “Of course she will!” Edward said as he walked towards his bike. “I’d just tell her the good news! Thank you guys! I love you!” he exclaimed. James and Ann followed him until the sidewalk. “We love you too, Edward! Goodluck!” they both shouted.

The day after their graduation, they went to the lighthouse again. They brought the letters they promised to bring there. “We would come back four years from now. Then we would read all the letters we have made for each other. And also for Edward, too,” Ann cheerfully said as she leaned on Edward. “That’s sweet, Ann. But what if I peaked? I’d be staying here, right?” he asked. “Would you really do that?” James innocently said. Edwards grinned. They punched him. “Ouch! Of course not. I’m not gonna peak. But I’ll be visiting this place from time to time” he said. “You better,” Ann commanded.

The enjoyed the last day they could have swum in the seas of their town. The day after tomorrow, they will be leaving for good to study. College wouldn’t be easy that they might not be able to visit the palace so they were trying to make the most out of their last stay.

Before James and Ann left the town, they witnessed Edward and his girlfriend’s civil wedding. “Doesn’t she look gorgeous?” Ann asked Lauren. “Absolutely. You are really a great designer,” she praised her. Ann blushed while Lauren smiled. Ann and James’ eyes met. “Thank You!” he whispered as he smiled genuinely. Ann read his lips and said welcome. The two of them, though sad that Edward wouldn’t be with them anymore, started to feel happy for him.

“So it’s gonna be just you and me now against the world, huh?” Ann asked. “I am afraid to say, yes,” he replied. “Don’t worry, we can do this. He taught us to be tough,” Ann cheered. “Yes. We’ll be though,” James answered as he held her hand and helped get inside their car. They drove using two different cars, and finally went to the city.

THREE

NARRATOR’s POV

“Trust me, it’s going to be okay,” James said as he held Ann’s hands, trying to pull her. She was scared to enter the gate of the university. It is so huge that she felt she would be lost. James, as always, stayed at her side. “I am really scared,” Ann said as they came near to her room. “I know. But if you won’t get inside. I’ll be late on my class,” James replied. “Fine. But come here as soon as you finish yours okay?” she said. “I will. Just give me a call if anything happens,” he said. “I will” Ann agreed. James immediately ran and went to his building.

Ann entered her room and she saw a vacant seat at the back. She sat there, looking like a kid, unsure of what she’s doing. The lady sitting beside her turned to her. “Hi! I’m Tricia, and you are?”she introduced herself. “Hi. My name is Ann Li,” she replied. “Nice meeting you Ann,” Tricia said. Ann smiled.

ANN’s POV

I was really happy that someone talked to me. She’s pretty and nice. But I still felt uncomfortable. It didn’t feel the same way when I am with my bestfriend.

Page 5: To the Beach

Our professor came and she started talking. I don’t know why but I really felt awkward. I couldn’t think properly. Yeah. I think I should call James.

JAMES’ POV

I was listening to our professor when I felt my phone vibrating. It must be a call from Ann. I went outside the room and answered it. “Hello?” I asked. “James,” she replied. “Yo? What’s wrong?” I asked. “Nothing. I just feel so uncomfortable here,” she answered. “You called me for that?” I, irritated, asked. “Uhm, yeah? What do I do?” she asked. “Okay. Do what I say okay?” I started. “Go back to your class. Sit on your chair. Make friends and don’t listen to the professor. Make friends. Just make sure he’s not looking,” I instructed her. “Are you even serious?” she asked. “Yep. I gotta go now okay? I’ll see you” I ended as I dropped the call. I did not know if she followed me until we met after classes.

“Hey!” I called her. “Hey your face,” she replied. “What are you up to? What is your problem?” confused, I asked. “I hate you” she replied angrily. “Huh? What did I do wrong?” I innocently asked. “You ditched me. I thought you will stay right at my side? Edward’s gonna know this,” she said as she walked out. Edward must not know. He would get worried if he would know Ann and I were fighting. I should follow her. “Hey Ann!” I shouted. She stopped. “What?” irritated, she asked. “Don’t tell Edward,” I said. It took her a few seconds before she answered back. “Fine,” she coldly replied. “Are you still mad at me?” I asked. “No. I’m not really mad at you. I was just pissed. You know how nervous I was there,” she shared. Aww. I did not know. “Sorry, Ann. Promise, I am not going to do it again,” I replied.

Days have passed and everything turned okay. I believe Ann had started to feel comfortable in her new world. She was able to find friends, and so I was. “James!” I heard Ann called me. “Hey!” I replied. I saw her with another girl. She was so beautiful. I have never seen such a beautiful girl. Nah. Ann for sure is beautiful but she’s my best friend. Of course a guy like me wouldn’t care. “James. This is my new friend, Tricia. I forgot to introduce you to her,” Ann said. I offered my hand for a handshake. I think I just felt love at first sight. “Hi, I’m Tricia,” she said with a smile. “Hi… I’m James” I stuttered. I couldn’t move. I was just stunned by her.

We were at the car when I finally got the guts to talk again. “God Ann, I love you,” I said. “I love you too. And yes, I will help you with her,” she said as she grinned. “Great. You really are my bestfriend. Thanks!” I said as I hugged her. She really knew me. Even if I haven’t say a thing, she already knew what to say to make me happy.

FOUR

JAMES’ POV

“What do you think? Should I join the varsity?” I asked Ann. “Hell yeah! You’ll get in for sure!” she replied. “Alright then, I think I will give it a try,” I said.

“Is this the try out for the chess varsity team?” I asked after I knocked on the door. I found a man sitting on his executive chair. He looked a little bit old but his built was quite impressive. “Yes. I thought no one is going to try out,” he said. He looked relieved seeing, at last, an aspirant chess player for the university. “So, how long have you been playing?” he asked as he prepared the chess board. “Since I was a kid. My mom thought me how to play,” I replied. “I see. So, you’ve been going to tournaments?” he inquired. “No. Not really. Chess was just my past time,” I answered. We played a couple of games. Sometimes I won, but most of the times, I didn’t. He’s good. He’s got a lot of techniques. We stopped playing

Page 6: To the Beach

after seeing other aspirants come in. Well, I was thinking I have the edge, though. I hoped he would get me.

“Hey James!” Ann shouted. She was with Tricia. Oh! That brightens up my day. I really hope she did something already. “Tricia needs some help with our project. Would you mind helping her out?” Ann asked. “Definitely,” I replied. Tricia smiled at me. How gorgeous is that? I felt really overjoyed. Now I’d have a chance to get closer to her.

NARRATOR’s POV

James and Tricia went to the bookstore to get some things for her project while Ann went home. When she arrived, her mom handed her a letter. “This must be from Edward!” she exclaimed.Dear Ann,I missed you and James so much. It’s been a month now since you left. How’s school? I hope you are both fine. I’m enjoying my married life here. I wish we could have a baby soon… Please take care of yourselves. I’m not there anymore to watch your health. You only have each other so don’t fight okay?”Yours,Edward

“Did James receive his letter too?” Ann asked her mom. “I’m not sure, darling. You better ask,” she replied. Ann called James but he wasn’t answering his phone. “He must be busy with Tricia” she chuckled.

“Right. It’s ten o’clock and he hasn’t replied to any of my messages yet,” Ann retorted as she walked back and forth her bed. Then she finally heard her phone ringing, it was James. She immediately took it. “Hello?” she asked. “Hello, Ann,” James replied as he yawned. He dropped himself on his bed. He must be really tired. “So what happened?” Ann, curiously asked. “Nothing really. I just helped her build that house. I did not know she’s that creative,” he said. “Really? More creative that me?” she asked. “Yeah,” he replied, again, with a yawn. Ann was asking questions about what happened but it seemed like James already fell asleep. “Sigh. He must be really tired,” Ann commented

ANN’s POV

“Tricia!” I exclaimed. “Hi Ann!” she replied. “Whoa. Your project is so nice!” I commented. “Yeah. James did almost all the work. He’s really talented. I’m glad you asked him to help me out. Thanks!” she said. “It’s no big deal. So, is he cool?” I asked. “Of course. I learned a lot of things about him. I think he’s a really nice guy,” she replied. “Do you think he has any chance on you?” I teased. She blushed. “Oh. I don’t know. We’re still getting to know each other. But he’s really kind. You must be lucky,” she answered. “No. You must be lucky,” I replied as I emphasized on the word you.

“Hello, Ann?” James said. “Hey! You slept over the phone last night,” I replied. “Yeah. Sorry about that. I was really tired,” he apologized. “So, have you talked to her yet?” he asked. I am not sure what to say. As of now, Tricia is still undecided. What do I say? I’m doomed. “Yeah. I did. She said you’re really nice and cool. You have a high chance on her, James” I lied about the last sentence. “Really?” he replied with such a joyful voice. “You’re really great, Ann. Love you!” he said before he hang up the phone. I feel guilty about lying to him. But what can I do? All I want is him to be happy.

FIVE

ANN’s POV

Page 7: To the Beach

I couldn’t sleep. I felt really guilty about lying to James. Tricia’s gonna like him anyway, right? We just need more time. They’ll be on before I know it. “A cup of hot chocolate for my bestfriend,” James said as he sat beside me. “Whoa. I missed this!” I exclaimed. “Edward sent his letter that’s why I remembered. Have you read yours?” he asked. “Yeah. He said we should take care of each other! And no fights!” I replied. “Why would we fight anyway? Over? You’ve been such a good girl nowadays,” he said. “I know,” I agreed. We enjoyed the hot chocolate together under a huge tree on the university garden. After a while, James felt sleepy so he laid his head on my lap and took a nap.

After some minutes, the sky started to turned gray. “James! Wake up! I think it’s going to rain!” I said as I shook his shoulders. James immediately stood up and we both ran to the nearest covered area. “I hate rainy season” he retorted. I chuckled. “Why are you laughing, silly girl?” he asked. “Nothing. You look cute when you get mad,” I remarked.

JAMES’ POVI was supposed to be going to my next class when I noticed that the varsity try out results has already been posted. I saw my name. “Yes!” I exclaimed. I immediately called Ann to tell the good news. “Hey! I got in!” I shared. “Told ya!” she replied. “Lunch after class? Let’s take Tricia with us!” I suggested. “Sure! I’ll ask her. See you at the parking area,” she agreed.

NARRATOR’s POV

“Tricia, James was asking if you could have lunch with us after class?” Ann asked. “Oh. Sorry. But I’ve got some appointments. Maybe next time,” she replied. Ann felt bad. She knew James would feel the same way if he finds out.

“Where’s Tricia? I’ll be treating you guys. We have to celebrate!” James said with a hue smiled on his face. “Sorry. She can’t come. She had made appointments before I asked her,” Ann said hesitantly. James looked down. “Alright. I guess it’ll be just the two of us, then. Let’s go?” he said.

James obviously felt rejected when Tricia wasn’t able to come with them over lunch. But Ann cheered him. She said that he actually has a high chance on her. She was just so busy that day. “Maybe you should talk to her more. Like, go to her classes and stuff,” Ann suggested. “Maybe. Right, I’ll do that starting tomorrow,” James said.

Later that night, James talked to her mom and Lauren. “Mom! Lauren, I got in!” he said. “Where?” Lauren asked. “Chess Varsity. Isn’t that cool?” he replied. “Wow! Good job son!” his mom commented. “Thanks mom. Our coach was really good. You should meet him!” James suggested. “Yeah. Maybe on your first tournament, you could introduce us to him,” she replied. “Sure,” James agreed.

Days have passed and James did what Ann suggested. He tried his best in showing all his efforts for Tricia. He’s obviously in love with her. Ann, on the other hand, was hopeful that Tricia does something in return for him soon.

SIX

NARRATOR’s POV

“Tricia! Wait up!” James called as he tried to run after Tricia. “Oh, James,” Tricia said. “Where are you off to? You want me to go with you?” James asked. “No. It’s okay. I can handle myself,” she replied before she walked away. James felt suspicious. Why is Tricia kind of ignoring him nowadays? He followed her like a

Page 8: To the Beach

stalker. He did not know where she is going. It was for him to find out.

Tricia parked her car in a restaurant. James followed her. He was trying his best so she would not notice him. He stayed outside as he looked for the best view. He saw her with another man. He observed. He had suspicions but he tried not to believe. Until he saw them kiss. He felt heartbroken. He was devastated. He thought Tricia liked him. He was wrong. Ann was wrong.

James was waiting for Tricia at her house, drinking. His car was parked a few houses away from her house. He called Ann. “You said I had a high chance” was the only thing he said. Ann was left confused for he immediately hung up the phone. Tricia finally came. He got out of his car and confronted her. “Tricia!” James exclaimed. “Hey! What brought you here? Are you, drunk?” she asked. “I thought I had a high chance? Why did you fool me?” he asked. “What are you saying? I did not fool you!” she replied with an angry tone. “I never said you had a high chance. It was just you who kept on bugging me!”she added. James felt devastated. He was hoping for nothing. Tricia was about to get in when thunders were heard. James held her arms. “Let go! I don’t like you, James. I have a boyfriend!” she said as she walked out. That part hurt him the most. He did not know Tricia has a boyfriend.

The rain started falling but James stood still. He was frozen. Tricia, however, did not care. “Who is that man?” her maid asked. “No one. Don’t mind him,” she replied. James stayed outside his car, he was soaking wet. Tricia stared at him from afar. She felt guilty, but she really doesn’t like him. There was no chance. That is why she called Ann.“Hello Ann?” Tricia asked. “Yes, Tricia?” Ann replied. “James is here in front of my house. He’s drunk. Would you please get him out of here? My dad’s gonna get mad. And it’s raining. He might get sick or something,” she said. Without even replying, Ann hung up the phone and immediately went to Tricia’s house.

After an hour or so, Ann arrived. “James! What are you doing?” she said as she helped James stand up. “You lied Ann. You lied,” he said with a very dull voice. Ann brought James inside his car and she drove him home.

ANN’s POV

“Hey! What happened?” Lauren asked. “He went to Tricia’s house. I do not know what happened but he’s drunk,” I replied. Lauren helped me bring him to his room. “Tricia, I loved you,” he kept on saying. I do not have any idea about what happened. That is why I called Tricia as Lauren their mom was changing his clothes.

“Hello Tricia? May I know what happened? James really looked devastated,” I started. “Ann, I never told him I loved or even liked him. He was just a mere friend to me,” Tricia explained. From what I heard, I can conclude that James must have known already that Tricia never liked him. I felt guilty. It was my fault. This was the first time James fell in love with a girl and she broke his heart.

“We’ll leave you two okay? Just call us when something happens. His temperature’s quite high,” James’ mom said as she and Lauren went outside of the room. I came near him. I took the wet towel and put it on his forehead. He’s burning. “Sorry James. I never thought this would happen. I’m really sorry,” I said. “But whatever happens, I’ll always be here”

JAMES’ POV

I woke up and saw Ann. My head hurts bigtime. I shouldn’t have drunk too much. “Hey! I prepared you a soup,” she said. I stared at her as I was recalling what happened last night. Then I remembered, Ann lied. “I’m not hungry,” I said as I made my way to the bathroom. Before I closed the door, I said, “Go home. I don’t

Page 9: To the Beach

need a an expert liar here,”

SEVEN

ANN’s POV

“Go home. I don’t need an expert liar here,” James said. Did he just say that? That I am an expert liar? Now I feel so miserable. How could my very best friend say that? I know I was wrong. But I only did it for him.

NARRATOR’s POV

About a week has passed but James and Ann never talked. Ann would contact James but he never returned her calls and messages. He also lied low from chess practices that is why his coach, John, looked for him.

“James!” John shouted when he finally found him at the parking lot, about to go home. “Why were you not going to practice? The tournament is getting near,” he said. “I just don’t feel like it,” he coldly said. “Is there any problem?” he asked again. “There’s none. I’m leaving now,” James replied as he was about to get inside his car. John, however, held his arms. Their eyes met and the next thing was James was already in the chess room.

“She lied to me. That’s what actually hurt the most. She made me hope for nothing,” James shared as they were playing. “Why do you think she lied?” John asked. James thought for a second. “Because she did not want me to get hurt,” he said shyly. “See? You’re still the person who understands her. It’s very clear that she just wanted you to be happy, James” he said. “Wait. Are you sure you don’t feel anything for Ann? Seems like you’ve been through many things already,” she said. “Hell no!” James exclaimed. “We’re just bestfriends!” he emphasized. “Fine. Fine! I was just asking” John said as he raised his hand. After the conversation, James felt like saying sorry to Ann. He realized that he also went overboard. Come what may, James couldn’t deny that Ann has been a very good friend to him.

JAMES’ POV

I was waiting outside Ann’s classroom when they were finally dismissed. I turned and saw Tricia. “James,” she greeted. “Hey,” I replied. “About last time,” she started. “It’s cool. I’m fine now,” I said as I walked out and ran after Ann. “Ann!” I called her. She turned to me but was looking down. I held her chin and lifted it up. “I’m sorry,” I apologized. “You… you’re not mad at me anymore?” she innocently asked. “Yeah. I’m really sorry. I was just too emotional,” I said. She smiled at me. “Oh I missed that smile,” I said as I hugged her. “I missed yours, too. I thought I was gonna lose my bestfriend,” she worriedly said. “That’ll never happen for sure,” I replied as I put my arms around her shoulders.

“Wow. You two are okay now?” Lauren asked when she saw us entering the house. “Yep,” I replied. “Right. So, you must be useless now, Edward,” Lauren shouted referring to Edward who was at the kitchen. “Edward’s here?” Ann asked as her eyes widened. “Where is he?” I asked, “Here!” Edward announced. “Edward!” Ann and I exclaimed. “You did not tell us you’d go here!” she said. “You didn’t tell me you guys were fighting. If Lauren did not call me, I wouldn’t know,” he said. We felt guilty. We never really hid anything from him. But it turned that since we moved, we started to lose communication. “You’re not writing letters anymore. I thought we’d still write for each other even if we’re just one cellular phone away? He asked. “Sorry. Promise we’ll write letters again,” Ann swore. “Nah. It’s okay. Just update me from time to time. You guys make me worry,” he replied.

It’s good to see Edward again. He has always been our middleman. I think it just

Page 10: To the Beach

meant something, Ann and I are really bestfriends.

NARRATOR’s POV

“James!” Ann called as she approached James. She brought him his favorite burger. “I asked them to add an extra cheese,” she whispered. “Awesome!” James replied. She observed him, eating his burger. She doesn’t know why, but she started to extraordinarily happy everytime she sees him after they fought. “You look so cute,” Ann said as she pinched James’ cheeks. “Ouch! I am eating okay? I know, I’m cute. You really don’t have to say that a million times,” he boasted and rolled his eyes. “You little proud man! Show me what you’ve got. Win that tournament,” she dared. “And what if I do?” he asked. “Then you’ll get a kiss from me,” she replied. James frowned. He really didn’t think it could be a good prize. “Yuck. Do you think that’s something I would look forward to? It’s not like you don’t kiss me usually,” he commented.

ANN’s POV

“Then you’ll get a kiss from me,” I replied. Shoot. Why did I even tell him that? James frowned. “Yuck. Do you think that’s something I would look forward to? It’s not like you don’t kiss me usually,” he commented. What do I say next, then? “It was a joke, you idiot,” I took it back.

I don’t know if it is just me, but James seemed to have moved on really fast. Maybe because his attention was diverted to the chess tournament. Last night, Tricia called me. “Ann, I was just thinking. Do you think James has forgiven me? I felt really upset about it. I actually did not care. But my conscience is killing me,” she said. “Oh. About that. I think he’s cool with it. He has moved on. Nothing to worry about,” I assured her. “You sure?” she asked. “Yup,” I replied. “You must really love him. Don’t you?” she asked again. “Yup,” I replied. “I mean. Love and not Love,” she said but giving a different tone on the latter one. “What do you mean by that?” I asked. “Come on, Ann. I see it. And I feel it. Another thing that hinders me from liking James aside from the fact that I have a boyfriend is you. I know you love him. And I’m pretty sure about that,” she said. “No. We’re just bestfriends,” I replied. “Well if that’s what you say. We’ll see about that,” she said before she hung up the phone. What was she saying? Do I look like I’m in love or something?

“Lauren, give me a call a soon as you read this. It’s important,” I sent Lauren a message. “Hey?” Is there anything wrong?” she asked upon reaching me. “Do you think I’m in love?” I asked. She laughed really hard. “Hey? What’s funny?” I asked. “You called me for that? I don’t even see you little sis. I can’t tell if you’re blooming or something. I can’t figure” she said. “Nah. Just say it,” I replied. “I really have no idea!” she said. “Aww!” I said. “Why ask? And why talk to me instead of James?” she asked. “Well, I just wanted to ask from a girl’s point of view,” replied.

“Hey Miss. You’re daydreaming,” someone said. I recognized his voice, it was James’. “What’s up?” he asked. “Nothing, really,” I replied. “What were you thinking?” he asked again. “Love?” I said with an unsure tone. “Love?” he questioned. “Yes. I was just thinking how to find your greatest love, your one true love,” I replied. “Well. I am not an expert. I don’t know,” he said. “Do you think, Tricia is your true love?” I teased him. “Yeah right, here we go again. Stop bringing her up into our conversations okay?” he commanded. “Why are you blushing then?” I teased again. “No I’m not,” he raised his voice. I laughed. “James, don’t deny it. You still like her,” I said. “When I say no, it’s a no,” he said seriously that is why I stopped. “Whatever,” I replied. “Well, back to the topic, when do you

Page 11: To the Beach

think we will find our greatest loves?” I asked him again. “I really have no idea Ann. Cut it okay? I’m not interested. If it comes, it comes. We just have to wait,” he ended.

JAMES’ POV

Today is the tournament. I’m excited but nervous at the same time. Mom and Lauren’s gonna watch so I have to win. Yeah, for Ann too. But I’m definitely buying for that kiss.

“Mom!” I shouted as I called her and Lauren’s attention. “This is Coach John Hawk. I told you I am gonna introduce you to him,” I said. “Coach, this is my Mom Rachel and sister Lauren,” I continued. Coach handed his hand but mom refused and walked out. “Mom?” I asked. Why did she do that? “Calling all the participants and coaches, please go to your respective places now. The competition is about to start,” said the master of ceremony. I did not get the chance to talk to her or Lauren. Maybe she was just not in the mood. But why is that? Well, I think I’ll just ask her later.

NARRATOR’s POV

“Mom!” James shouted as he called his mom and Lauren’s attention. “This is Coach John Hawk. I told you I am gonna introduce you to him,” he said. “Coach, this is my Mom Rachel and sister Lauren,” he continued. John handed his hand but Rachel refused and walked out. “Mom?” James asked. “Calling all the participants and coaches, please go to your respective places now. The competition is about to start,” said the master of ceremony. James wasn’t able to come after them.

“Mom? Is that?” Lauren asked. “Don’t tell James. He shouldn’t know,” Rachel coldly replied. Lauren did not talk again. She knew her mother felt upset seeing her ex- husband. She knew everything, but kept quiet for James’ sake.

ANN’s POV

“And Our 17th Annual Chess Tournament Champion is James Reid!” the master of ceremony announced. “Yes!” I exclaimed. I could see that James was really happy. It was the sweetest smile he gave at me after what happened between him and Tricia. Oh, why does he look so gorgeous wearing that smile? Wait. Ann? Are you falling for your bestfriend? No no no no. That’s never gonna happen. “Wake up!” I exclaimed as I slapped my own cheeks. “Ann? Are you okay?” Lauren asked. “Oh! Yeah! Fo course I’m okay,” I replied.

After everything, James ran to us. “You see! I won! But there’s no way I’m taking that kiss you were offering,” he bragged. “It was a joke, you fool,” I said. He laughed. “Congratulations James, you made mom really proud,” her mom said as he kissed her son. “Thanks mom!” he replied. Lauren and my mom kissed and hugged him too. “Hey! So where’s my hug?” he inquired. I grinned as I hugged and eventually kissed her. His cheeks were so soft. But what am I even noticing it? He’s just a friend Ann, just a friend.

At the restaurant, the five of us were dining. “Here you go, I was really positive that you will win that’s why I bought you a present,” I said as I handed him a small box. “A bracelet. This one’s cool!” he joyfully said. “I have one too. That’s a pair,” I said as I showed him mine. “Aren’t you too old for a friendship band? You’re college now guys,” Lauren teased. “They’ll never get old, Lauren. Remember that,” my mom said.

Page 12: To the Beach

JAMES’ POV

“What are you staring at?” I asked Ann. “Our picture,” she replied. “I looked horrible there, those hats are definitely phased out by now,” I commented on the hats we were both wearing. “Shut up. Don’t you miss those days? When we were kids?” she asked me. “Of course I do, it’s been a year already when we last saw the lighthouse. I miss Edward too, he didn’t even go to the competition a few months ago,” I replied. “He’s busy being a dad. Pardon him,” she said. “Yeah. I know,” I said.

“Mom?” I called as I was looking for her. “Hey James! Why so early today?” Lauren asked. She seemed a bit worried. “Where’s mom?” I asked as I scanned the house. “She’s not… she’s not here,” she stuttered. I was about to believe her but I saw mom’s shadow from the veranda. “She’s there!” I said as I made my way towards her. “James! Don’t go there!” Lauren tried to stop me but I went on. “Mom!” I said until I noticed coach. “Hey coach. Why are you here?” I asked. It was obvious that they were uncomfortable t see me. However, I don’t have any idea why. “I… I was--” coach tried to say something but Lauren cut it with “He’s our dad.” I was shocked. “What?” I exclaimed. “Lauren!” mom shouted. “There’s no point in lying mom! He has to know,” Lauren answered back. “Wait. I don’t get it. How can he be our dad?” I asked. “James,” he said as he tried to hold me. “Don’t touch me. You knew this all along?” I asked. “The moment I saw you,” he replied. “You lied,” I said. “How about you mom? Why didn’t you and Lauren tell me after you saw him at the competition?” I asked her. “I just did not want you to get hurt,” she replied. “You lied. You all lied!” I shouted before I ran out of the house. I took the car and left the area. I did not know where I wanted to go but one thing is for sure, that I don’t want to go home.

TEN

ANN’s POV

“Ann? Are you with James?” Lauren asked as soon as I answered the phone. “No. Why? Did something wrong happen?” I worriedly asked. “Coach John, he’s our father. He already knows,” she said. “What? Coach John? How come?” shocked, I asked. “Long story. We have to find him first,” she said. “Maybe he went to the beach to go to the light house,” I said. “Oh yeah! Would you mind going with me?” she asked. “I’ll go with you, I’m on my way,” I said as I hung up the phone.

Lauren looked really worried. James never left home without anybody knowing where he was. He did not call Edward but we are sure that he went to the beach. When we arrived at the town, we saw Edward. “He’s there. But he doesn’t want to talk,” he said. He accompanied us to the lighthouse, there we saw James, sleeping.

Lauren approached him. “James,” she said as she touched his forehead. James opened his eyes but closed it again as he turned his position. “Sorry, little brother. We’re sorry,” she said as she started to cry. “Leave me alone,” was his only reply. Lauren then, decided to leave the lighthouse first. I followed her while Edward stayed inside to watch over James.

“He’s still hurt,” she said. “I noticed,” I replied. James’ father left them when he was four. Lauren was six, turning seven, then, that is why she already remembered what he looks like. James never remembered his father. Their mom burned all their pictures with him. He was so mad at him for betraying his mom, betraying and leaving their family. I suddenly remembered my father. The same thing happened to me. He also left for another girl. But the only difference is, his father is now back after thirteen long years while mine is still out of sight.

It was getting dark already when Lauren went inside the lighthouse again. “James,

Page 13: To the Beach

come on. Let’s go home. Mom’s waiting,” she said. James did not answer but pretended to be sleeping still. “You can’t stay here. We have to go home. Please?” she added. After minutes of talking, James finally stood up. But he never talked. We were at the boat when I sat beside him. “It’s gonna be okay, James” I said as I put my hands on tops of his. He still did not answer but he put his hands off. The silence was deafening. No one dared to talk during the whole trip.

“James!” his mom exclaimed as she held her son’s face. James struggled and went to his bedroom. Lauren comforted her mother. “Let’s just give him sometime mom,” she said.

NARRATOR’s POV

James went to his bedroom. He felt tired, weak, betrayed and all the negativity. After a while, he heard footsteps, those were Ann’s. “James,” she started. “Why did you not call me?” she asked. James did not answer but pretended to be asleep instead. “I know you’re not asleep. Why not talk?” she encouraged. Still, she did not hear from James. But she stayed beside him until he finally fell asleep for real. She was aware that James was hurt so bad. She could see it. The pain in his heart that he did not want to share. They were bestfriends, but he did not tell his feelings to her. She tried to understand, he need time.

During wee hours, she heard him talk. He was really sleeping, but he was talking. “It could’ve been better if I did not survive. I should’ve just died,” James murmured. “Shh. James, don’t say that,” she said as she ran her fingers through his hair. Even while sleeping, it’s obvious how hurt James was.

A few days later, Ann saw James. “Dude you look wasted!” Ann commented as she came near James who was sitting under the tree. “Why do you care?” he asked as he put his handkerchief on his face, he was about to sleep. Ann felt James’ has not come back to his normal attitude. Still, he was aloof and quiet. At home, he’s the same. He never talked. “James!”she shook his shoulders. He moaned. “Let’s go out. Come on!” I offered. “I don’t want to go out. Just leave me alone okay?” he commanded. Ann felt sad and decided to just leave James alone. She missed her bestfriend so much but she did not know what to do either to have him back.

The next day, Ann was walking towards the gate when she saw John approaching James. She tried to get near, enough to hear their conversation. “Son,” John called. “Don’t call me son, you bastard,” James replied. “I just want to-“ he was cut when “Please stop following me. I don’t need you. Things will never change. You ruined it, now pay,” he rudely said as he went inside his car. “How could he say that to his own father! That was so rude!” Ann thought.

She couldn’t take it anymore, she went to James’ house and confronted him “James!” she shouted. “You again? Aren’t you tired. Because I am” he said without much interest. “How dare you do that to your dad?” she said with an angry tone. “Do what? And besides, he’s not my dad,” James replied. “What’s gotten into you! You’ve changed. You weren’t like this before. You were kind, happy and all,” Ann lectured. She has said a couple of words more before James talked again. “Hey! Who do you think you are? My wife? You’re not even my girlfriend so stop pretending like you are. Commanding me to do things you want me to do. Tell me what to feel even if it is far from what I actually do. You’re nothing to me, Ann. You are just my bestfriend,” he stressed. Ann was shocked. She did not expect it to come from him. She thought he loved her as much as she does, at least a friend. But it seemed that he even took their friendship for granted. “Oh, Right. Well, thanks for reminding me. I’m just your best… friend. Sorry for the fact that I care, okay? I was just thinking, you’re dad’s there while mine’s not. Weren’t you happy that he came back for you? How more stupid can you get?” she continued even though she was hurting already. “Stop it Ann. Stop dreaming that you father’s gonna come back. Cause he

Page 14: To the Beach

won’t. He left you already. Don’t keep your hopes up! If you want a father, mine’s yours! I don’t want him anyway,” he said. Ann couldn’t take it anymore. She slapped him. He stared at her with his angry eyes. “So are you done? If you are, then you may leave. Don’t ever come back again!” he shouted as he pointed his fingers towards the door. Ann was about to leave when remembered something. “Give me the bracelet,” she said. James willingly took the bracelet off his wrist and throw it to Ann’s hands. “Sure! I don’t need that stupid bracelet,” he commented. “We’re not bestfriends anymore James. Not even friends!” she said as she walked out of the room. “The hell I care!” James shouted back. James was poker faced after while Ann left his house crying. She was shocked about what happened. That was the worst fight he ever had with James. She did not even think they will ever come back to normal again.

Meanwhile, Tricia’s boyfriend was kissing her when she struggled. “Why?” he asked. “Nothing. I just feel it’s not right,” she said. “What’s not right?” he asked again. “Us. I don’t love you anymore. Sorry,” she said. “Why? Is there someone else?” he asked. There was none. But she doesn’t love the guy anymore, she thought of using James as a reason. “Yes. James Reid. I love him,” she lied before she walked away. “That James Reid will pay,” the guy uttered.

JAMES’ POV

It’s been a week since Ann and I fought. Edward was calling me but I never answered. Everyone’s worried but I still pretend like I don’t care. I guess I’m just afraid to face my father. I don’t know what to day, I don’t know what to feel. If I can run away from all these things, I would. I just hope that one day, I wake up and everything’s fixed up. Buy yeah, I know that’s never gonna happen. It won’t be that easy

“Son!” he called me again. I was about to run but he caught me. “Please. Let’s talk,” he begged. I did not know what to do. “Please?” he asked again. I wasn’t sure why I said okay. I wasn’t really in the mood. I wasn’t ready yet to talk to him. “I’m sorry son,” he started. “I know I was wrong that I left you. I thought I loved her,” he said. I did not know what to say. I was feeling numb. “Please. Let me be a father to you and your sister,” he begged. That line caught me. All of a sudden I felt all the hatred I’ve had for him. How can he just show up and pretend it’s okay after thirteen years?“It’s late. Stop expecting that I’ll forgive you because I never will. You had thirteen years, thirteen years to say sorry but you did not. Where were you when I needed a father? Where? You weren’t there. I did not even hear your voice. I did not even know how you looked like. Now, you’d ask me to forgive you? That’s not easy,” I blurted out. “I was afraid,” he answered. “And how about me? Don’t you think I was not afraid? If you only knew how hard it was for me. Things were not easy. I almost d-“I was cut off when he hugged me. I was surprised that I couldn’t move.

Suddenly, I felt the other way around. It was as if his hug was the only key for me to forgive him. Then, for the first time, my tears fell. “I’m sorry son. I’m sorry. I did not know,” he said. He was already crying that time. I was not able to answer him back. But I returned his hug. I don’t know how it happened, but that hug seemed to have erased all the hatred I’ve had for him. That quick. That instant.

It’s been days since my father and I reconciled. It felt good. But one thing still bugged me, Ann. He was lying on his bed, thinking of that fight they had.

“Hey! Who do you think you are? My wife? You’re not even my girlfriend so stop pretending like you are. Commanding me to do things you want me to do. Tell me what to feel even if it is far from what I actually do. You’re nothing to me, Ann. You are just my bestfriend,”

“Give me the bracelet,”

“Sure! I don’t need that stupid bracelet,”

“We’re not bestfriends anymore James. Not even friends!”

“The hell I care!”

He realized he was wrong. “Damn it, James. What did you do? The things you have said were beyond hurtful. She will never forgive you. You’re doomed. Damn it, damn it,” he retorted as his was punching his head. After hurting himself enough, he stopped. But he was still thinking, what to do so that Ann would forgive him. “What should I do now?” he asked himself.

NARRATOR’s POV

Another term has begun but James haven’t talked to Ann yet. He couldn’t think of the best way for him to be forgiven. He was thinking to seek help from Edward but he couldn’t come. “I’m sorry, James. I can’t go there right now, my wife’s giving birth soon. But I’ll talk to her, okay? I’ll help you,” he said. Now, James is all alone. He himself should find a way to apologize and to be friends with Ann again.

One day, he waited outside Ann’s classroom. He was bringing her favorite chocolates with him. “Ann!” he called her attention. Ann for sure heard him but she went on instead. James followed her until her house but she never talked to him. “Can you please help me? Ask her to talk to me,” he begged Dina. “I did, James. I’ve been talking to her many times already. It’s just that, she was hurt. I hope you understand. Maybe she just needs mo time. It’s been too long now, I know. But I know you’ll be okay soon,” she comforted. James was disappointed. He really couldn’t talk to Ann properly. She never answered his calls, nor messages. When

Page 16: To the Beach

he’s at her house, she never went down to entertain him. He would knock on her bedroom door, but she never answered. Everyone’s helping him, but they all couldn’t do anything. He was starting to feel hopeless already. “Can you please just give this to her?” he asked as he handed her the chocolates. “Sure son, I will. Go home now, you also have to rest,” Dina replied.

At his house, his mom, dad, and sister were talking. “You guys can be friends at least for James,” Lauren suggested. “Yes. For James,” Rachel replied. John hugged her, as a friend. “Aww. Can I join?” Lauren asked. “Of course, honey,” John answered. They were hugging when they heard someone cleared his throat. “Ehem. I did not know there’s a family affair here,” he said. “James! Come on here. Join us!” Lauren said. James joined the hug. His family was the only thing that has been making him happy. He felt blissful that after thirteen years, they were a family again. His mom and dad were at least, civil. “Brother, you’re hot. Are you okay?” Lauren worriedly asked. “Yeah. But I’m fine,” he answered. Lauren put his fingers on James forehead. He’s burning. “Yeah right, you’re fine. Come on, go upstairs and rest,” she said as she turned him around and pushed him towards the staircase’s direction.

On the other hand, Tricia left the country for good. His dad wanted her to study in a foreign business school instead of pursuing her dream in the world of fashion. Ann Li, was left with no friends.

ANN’s POV

“Good Morning Class! I have an announcement to make. Next month, we will be holding a fashion show. You have to design an outfit of your choice. You have the prerogative to choose your model but he or she must be from the opposite sex,” our professor said. Shoot. I don’t have a model. I don’t have friends here. I’d doomed. Damn it.

I was about to go home when I bumped into Ivan, the team captain of the basketball varsity team. “Oh, Sorry miss. I did not mean to,” he apologized. “It’s okay,” I replied. “By the way, I’m Ivan,” he introduced himself as he gestured his hand. “I’m Ann,” “Ann Li,” we said at the same time. “How did you know my name?” I asked. “I just know. See you around,” he said as he walked away. I know that I am nobody in this university, but how did he know me? That’s weird. But he’s gorgeous. I don’t blame a lot of girls from stalking him. He’s worth the time.

TWELVE

ANN’s POV

I was sitting under the tree where James and I used to hang out. I was thinking, how long have we been not talking? I missed him already. But I’m still hurt. I still couldn’t believe he said those words to me. I know he was not in the mood. But he didn’t have the right to say any of those.

I was shocked when a hand, holding a handkerchief showed up in front of me. I looked up and saw Ivan. I got the hanky and “Thank you,” I said as I started wiping my tears. “It’s not really good to cry on public,” he said as he sat beside me. “Oh, I thought I was alone. No one really goes here,” I replied. “Nah. I was just kidding. Why are you crying by the way? Don’t worry, he loves you,” he said as he gently tapped my shoulders. “But it didn’t seem like he does,” I replied. “Who’s that guy? I can punch him if you want,” he offered. “No! He’s my bestfriend. But we had a huge fight. I don’t feel like forgiving him. He hurt me, bigtime,” I replied. “That guy must be an asshole. How could he hurt such a pretty girl like you?” he said. Wait. Did he just say I’m pretty? Aww. I never thought such a hottie would

Page 17: To the Beach

say that to me.

Days have passed and Ivan and I got really close. I noticed that he started to hang out with me more than his friends. Then I got an idea, why not chose him as my model? “Ivan, would you mind to be my model for the fashion show?” I asked. “A fashion show?” he asked in reply. “Yeah?” I confirmed. “Sure!” he agreed. “Wow! Thanks!” I exclaimed. I wasn’t able to control myself but hug him. Our eyes met and it started to feel awkward. “You’re really beautiful Ann. Do you know that?” he asked. I think I just blushed. I did not know what to say. Things were happening so fast. Why was I feeling that he liked me? Wait. Stop dreaming. Stop assuming. You assumed too much before, with James. Now you’re hurt.

JAMES’ POV

I saw Ann walking with another guy. Who is he? I think I’ve seen him before. I just couldn’t remember where. “Hey, do you know that guy?” I asked a friend as I pointed my fingers on him. “What? Do you not know who he is? He is the team captain of the basketball varsity team! I thought you’re a player too” he replied. “Oh. Sorry. I actually don’t know everyone,” I said. I still can’t remember where I had seen him. But why am I feeling bad vibes towards him?

“Ann, I’m sorry. Please, talk to me,” was the message I never get tired of sending her. I was such a stupid brat. Why can’t I even think of a great idea to have her back? Is my persistence and sincerity not enough? What does she want? Oh, my head is aching. I feel horrible.

I was about to sleep when I heard Lauren knocking on the door. “James? Are you still up?” she asked as she opened the door. “Yeah,” I answered. “How are you feeling?” she asked as she checked on my temperature. “I’m a bit dizzy because of the meds. My head still hurts like hell,” I answered. “Good thing you’re temperature’s going back to normal. Are you sure you don’t want to go to the hospital? You’ve been sickly these past few weeks, I noticed,” she added. “No. I’m okay. Maybe I’m just a bit stressed about Ann,” I replied. “Aww. I’m sorry about that. Don’t worry. She’ll talk to you soon. I promise,” she replied.

NARRATOR’s POV

Ivan and Ann got closer and closer since she asked him to be his model. Ivan, also, has started to show his motive towards Ann. Ann was hesitant, but it was obvious that she’s definitely enjoying Ivan’s company. That made her ignore James even more. She didn’t think about him anymore. She even changed her cellular phone number. It seemed like she has totally forgotten their friendship already. Even the feelings she had and was starting to develop within her before the fight.

James always watched Ann from afar. Sometimes, he would come near her, but nothing happened. They never got to talk. He also noticed Ivan and Ann’s closeness. He was jealous. He had this feeling that something is really wrong. He never felt that way before. There was something he was thinking, but he never admitted, even to himself. It was a thought that he never entertained, since they were kids. It just puzzled him, why suddenly think of that now?

“Damn it! He’s Tricia’s boyfriend! I knew it! I saw him at the restaurant,” James murmured in the middle of his class. He was looking for Ann but he couldn’t find her. He saw his dad, so he consulted. “He’s Tricia’s boyfriend. But I am not sure if they are still together!” he shared. “Why not call that Tirica?” John suggested “I already did. Her phone’s off,” he replied. James was about to go find Ann again when he suddenly felt dizzy and weak. Last thing he knew, everything blacked out.

JAMES’ POV

I woke up at the clinic. “What happened?” I asked dad. “You passed out earlier. I called your mom and sister. Would you want me to reach Ann too?” he asked. “No. I don’t want her to think I’m faking just to be friends with her again. Besides, I feel fine now,” I replied. “James?” I heard mom calling my name. “Are you okay son? What happened?” she said as she hugged me. “I’m okay now mom,” I replied. “You really need to get a check up,” Lauren said.

After a few days of resting, I went to Tricia’s house. Then I found out that she left for another country. I must be the most unlucky person on earth that the maids don’t even have her number. Now I have to find her online. I hope she replies soon.

When I was on my way to my building, I saw Ivan and Ann. They were holding hands. What the hell? Are they together? Why do I even feel this way? Am I jealous? Cannot be. This isn’t happening. I’m just concerned about Ann. That’s all.

We were at the hospital when I received a message, “I told myself I’m gonna let you pay,” said the message. “Who’s this from?” I thought aloud. I was totally clueless about it. “James? Are you listening?” asked my mom. “Yeah. Sorry about that,” I said as I kept my phone. “The symptoms you’ve been telling me, the fever, weakness and headache are convincing. But we have to take a couple of exams to verify if it’s really back,” said the doctor.

We were on our way home when Lauren commented, “It’s gonna be okay James, don’t worry,” she said. I wasn’t actually thinking about what the doctor said. I was thinking about the message. What would that person do to me? I really had no idea.

“Ivan is my ex-boyfriend, James. I broke up with him before I left. Sorry, but I said I loved you,” was Tricia’s reply to the mail I sent to her. She must be the reason. Ivan might be using Ann to get even. Ann’s in trouble.

ANN’s POV

It’s the day of the fashion show, Ivan and I are getting ready in the dressing room when James came in. “What are you doing here?” I asked. “Ann, we really need to talk,” James said. “She doesn’t want to talk to you, back off,” Ivan commanded. “Stay out of this,” James answered him. “I said, she doesn’t want to talk to you,” Ivan said as he was trying to let James’ hands off my shoulder. James punched him, maybe out of anger. “Damn it. You shut up!” he shouted. “James!” I exclaimed. Things were heating up. “Ann, you have to know something. This guy’s not in love with you,” James blurted out. “What are you saying? He loves me!” I replied. “No. He’s just-“ “Are you really mad at me that you don’t want me to be happy? I love Ivan. And besides, we’re together now so it’s none of your business,” I cut him. James looked shocked. “Ann! Are you even thinking? He doesn’t love you! He’s just-“ he was cut again when I slapped him. “Enough! I’ve heard a lot of hurtful things from you already, James. Just stay away. Leave me alone! You already blew it, our friendship. Now don’t go waste your time and humiliate me in front of everyone here!” I shouted. James looked even more surprised. “Trust me, Ann. This time, I don’t deserve that slap,” he said before he walked away. “Ann, don’t mind that asshole. I love you,” Ivan tried to calm me down with a kiss. I am not sure, but I felt bad after that.

NARRATOR’s POV

James couldn’t believe she really wouldn’t talk to him. “And that Ivan? How could he fall for that stupid jerk! He’s just using her!” he thought aloud.

Page 19: To the Beach

“I have a strong feeling Ivan just wanted to get even. He was so mad that I broke up with him. I’ll talk to Ann soon. I’m just so busy here. Sorry for all the trouble, James. I did not mean to drag you into this,” Tricia replied to James’ mail.

Tomorrow, James and his family would know the results of medical exams. He thought of sneaking out tonight to go to the beach alone. He’ll be back before they know it anyway, he thought.

James was staring at their fancy box when he was having some flashbacks.

“I really hope we could stay here forever, James,” -Ann

“So it’s gonna be just you and me now against the world, huh?” -Ann

“I love you too. And yes, I will help you with her,” -Ann

“Nothing. You look cute when you get mad,” -Ann

“Then you’ll get a kiss from me,” -Ann

“Wait. Are you sure you don’t feel anything for Ann? Seems like you’ve been through many things already” - John

“Am I really in love with my besfriend all along?” He thought to himself.

“I missed yours, too. I thought I was gonna lose my bestfriend,” –Ann

“But we’re just bestfriends. We can never be lovers,” James added.

“Let’s make another letter!” –Ann

Then James took a pen and a paper, there, he wrote his true feelings. The letters they’ve made have never been read. They promised that after college, they would read everything.

James was about to leave the place when he put his letter on the box. However, he did not notice that there is a new letter there. Perhaps, it was from Ann.

He went back to the city. It was raining really hard when he decided to talk to Ann, at least as his one last try. He didn’t want her to get hurt. Especially that he’s the reason.

It was only Ann and their maid in their house when she heard the doorbell. “I’ll get it” she said to their maid. From the door she saw that it was James, soaking wet. He doesn’t have an umbrella and it was raining. However, instead of opening the door and letting him in, Ann locked it and ordered their maid to not let him in. She went upstairs, in her room. From time to time, he would check on James from her window. James did not leave. He was waiting for Ann. After about two hours, the maid talked to her. “Are you sure you don’t want to let him in? What if he gets sick?” she asked. “He already did that before and he was even drunk. He’ll still survive this time,” Ann replied.

After another hour, Ann checked on him. It’s getting dark but the rain’s still pouring. That time, he was already sitting on the walkside. He must be tired. But she did not care. She was thinking that it was for all he has done. Then their landline phone rang.

Dina and another friend finally arrived and saw James waiting outside the gate. He

Page 20: To the Beach

was sitting and his head was against his knees. She immediately went to him. “James, are you alright?” she asked as she was shaking James. He did not answer. It looked like he fell unconscious. “James?” she asked again. This time, James lost his balance and fell. He was really unconscious. “Oh my God. Let’s take him to the hospital!” Dina exclaimed.

The same time it happened, Ann got the phone call. “Hello?” she answered. “Hello? Is this Ann?” the girl on the line asked. “Yeah. Who’s this?” Ann asked in reply. “Ann, this is Tricia. I have to tell you something really important,” she said. “What is it?” she asked. “Ivan. He was my boyfriend. I don’t know if you’d believe me but James and I are positive that he’s just using you for his revenge. I said I loved James. He was so mad at him. I don’t know. He might do something bad to you to get even. But I’m telling you I wasn’t in love with James. I just used him to get rid of Ivan. I’m sorry. I did not think this will cause you a lot of trouble,” she said. “Is that what’s he’s trying to say before the fashion show?” she thought aloud. “Ann?” Tricia confirmed if Ann was still on the line, but she wasn’t anymore. She immediately went outside to go to James but she didn’t find him. “Ivan,” she said as she left the place.

ANN’s POV

“The doctor said he needs blood transfusion as soon as possible,” James’ mom said. His dad volunteered the moment he knew it was needed. “Is it normal? For a relapse?” I couldn’t help but ask. “Unfortunately. But we have to keep our hopes up. We’ll do everything for him. He will survive this,” mom replied. That day, the blood transfusion happened. It was James’ birthday, but we were not able to do the plans.

I was at home, fixing the box since it was slightly damaged when I dropped them. Even though I wasn’t with James, I felt like opening it. Every single thing inside that box is really important for us. Each item has its own story. Among all them, three things stood out the most at that moment. The first one was our picture. And the other two were the hats we used to wear when we lost our hair due to chemo. “I looked horrible there, those hats are definitely phased out by now,” I remembered James said when he saw the picture again. Yeah. Maybe we can’t find any hat like these anymore today. They are no longer in. But these definitely would still be of use.

The next day, we decide to push through with the celebration. Lauren and her mom decorated his room with balloons and other festive materials. Mom made some dishes that James could eat too. I did not buy any presents for him this year. The box and letters were my gift. “Happy birthday to you…” we woke him up with a song. I was wearing my old hat as I was holding his. I helped him sit up so he could make a wish and blow his candles. “Happy Birthday James! We love you,” everyone greeted.

JAMES’ POV

I was resting when I heard voices. They were singing happy birthday to me. I did not even remember it was my birthday yesterday. Ann helped me sit up so I could make a wish and blow the candles. “Happy Birthday James! We love you,” everyone greeted.

Everyone gave their presents except for Ann. She was sitting beside me when I noticed her hat. “What look are you trying to portray now, Ms. Fashion Designer?” I teased. “Nothing, really. I just thought of wearing this,” she said as she stood up. “And giving you this,” she continued as she handed me the hat. It was after a minute or two before I recognized the hats. They were the hats we used to wear when

Page 21: To the Beach

we were kids to hide our heads. Losing hair one by one didn’t really look good. “I remember this,” I said as I wore it to myself. Ann was helping me fix it when I noticed something off. I held his head but she struggled. “Let me see,” I talked. She let me. I took his hat and saw that her hair was also gone. “You… why?” I asked as I held my tears. “Summer is near. I think I need to cut my hair too. And I realized that being bald is cool,” she said as she scratched her head. All of us were shocked upon seeing what she just did. I was touched. I knew she was faking. She did that because of me. She wanted me to feel better. I was really feeling weak but I held her arms and pulled her towards me. I hugged her, as tight as I could. I was not able to control my tears anymore, they fell. “You really did not have to do that, Ann,” I said as I continued hugging her. I felt that she was crying then, too. Everyone in the room was. “This is the only thing I can do to at least comfort you,” she answered as she was sobbing. “I love you, Ann” I said with all the feelings. “I love you, too,” she replied.

NARRATOR’s POV

Everyone was shocked seeing Ann with no hair, just like James. It was sweet and touching for her to do that for her bestfriend.

After a while, when the mood finally changed, Ann asked James if they could start reading the letters even they haven’t graduated from college yet. “Sure! This will kill much of our time. Great idea, Ann,” James agreed.

“Dear Ann,Thank you for lending me some money. If you didn’t, Lauren would surely get mad if I did not replace her chocolates. You are really one true friend. I love you.Yours,James”

“Dear James,This is one of the best days of my life. I have beaten my classmate in chess. He was really proud of himself. I hate him. Good thing you taught me some techniques. Thank you! You are really one true friend. I love you.Always,Ann”

“I love you,”

“Whoa. Did you notice? We said a lot of I love you’s on our letters,” she said. “That is because we loved each other,” James, starting to feel weak again, replied. They have read a couple of letters. Each letter was full of emotions may it be gratitude or hatred. Sure, they have fought many times over petty and serious things, but nothing and no one has successfully broken their friendship. Ann and James will always be the best of friends.

The lights were already off but James still couldn’t sleep. “Lauren,” he whispered, but enough to wake up his sister. She immediately went next to him. “I have a favor. Would you mind helping me out?” he asked.

“We can write everything. Things that we have or haven’t said to each other,” Ann instructed James as she introduced the box of letters. They promised to write anything to each other and they can only read those letters, together, after ten years.

“Dear James,

If only you know how confused I am right now. Suddenly, I felt weird. I have been ignoring this feeling for the past few weeks now.

When you met Tricia, I wanted you to be happy. But there were times that I felt different. It was like I was jealous, but not definite about it. We did not hang out a lot when you started liking her. It was really weird. When she broke your heart, mine was broken too. More when you got mad at me. I felt so relieved when we finally reconciled. I missed you.

About the weird feeling I have shared, I really couldn’t figure it out until the chess competition. I saw you, you were happy again. After what happened to you and Tricia, you smiled again. I never noticed how pretty your smile is until that day. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me. I am confused, I guess I am starting to like or shall I say love you, more than just a friend.

I don’t know where this feeling is taking me. I just hope that whatever happens, we would still be with and for each other, at least as bestfriends.

Always,

Ann”

8th Year October 5, 11:20 p.m.

“Dear Ann,

I feel terrible. We haven’t spoken for weeks now. When are you going to forgive me? I regret the words I have said. But I know there is no way to take them back. I’m sorry. I know I’ve hurt you so much.

Page 23: To the Beach

These past few days, I haven’t been feeling well. I feel sick. Maybe it’s because of you. It sucks. I don’t even know what to do. Seeing you with Ivan everytime pisses me off. How can someone I don’t even know instantly be that close to you? It’s hard to accept that. Moreover, I have to admit that I’m jealous. I’m not sure if it is because he has the chance to talk to you while I have none. I have been thinking is Dad is right, that I have feelings for you. I did not want to entertain that thought. However, it seems like it needs to be considered. Right now, I am confused. Really. Bigtime.

But if there is only one wish I can make right now, that is you forgive me. Whatever happens, we would still be with and for each other, at least as bestfriends.

Yours,

James”

NARRATOR’s POV

James was staring blankly at the window when John entered the room. “Are you feeling good today, son?” he asked. “Just the same way,” James replied, trying to smile. There was a moment of silence until James talked. “Dad?” he asked. “Yes?” he replied. “Thank you,” he said. John did not reply but he held his son’s head. His actions spoke louder than any word he could say. “I would do anything to make up for those thirteen years son,” he finally replied after a few minutes.

Later that day, James also had a conversation with Edward. “Edward, how old are you now?” he randomly asked as Edward was checking on his blood pressure. “As if you don’t know. Twenty eight, why?” he replied. “Nothing, I was just thinking, you have always called me son,” he said. Edward smiled. “Silly. Does age matter? You and Ann will always be my children. You have been very good kids. I will never get tired of saying that” he replied. “Thanks Edward. Thanks for being more than just a nurse. You’ve been a great father to us,” he said. “You’re welcome. I hope that I can be as good to my son when he’s born,” he replied. “I’m sorry,” James apologized. Edward’s wife is about to give birth. However, since James is in a bad condition, he decided to stay with him first. “It’s okay. I’ll be seeing him soon anyway. Once you get well. It’s soon, right?” he asked. James only answered with a smile.

Ann was sitting on the couch, fixing the fancy box when she saw the Chess Board. Seeing that brought one conversation they have had.

-FLASHBACK-

“Ann, James, we have to get going now,” Edward said.

-END OF FLASHBACK-

“Hey James!” he called. James was resting then. As usual, he looked pale. “Why?” he asked as he slowly opened his eyes. “Wanna play?” she asked as she raised the board, enough for James to see. “Sure,” he said even though he really wasn’t feeling well that time.

Page 24: To the Beach

As they were playing, James seemed to have gained his energy. He laughed everytime Ann would crack jokes. “I am really happy that you’re my bestfriend, Ann,” he suddenly said after laughing. Ann was touched. “Me too. Lucky to have you,” she said. “I wish I could get more time,” he said. “Don’t say that James,” Ann got angry. “I mean, more time, more moves But I think just lost,” he said, referring to the chess game they were having. “Oh my God. Did I just win? Yeah. I told you someday I am going to beat you! That day has come! It’s today! I am so great” Ann shouted as she spun around. “I guess I’m done waiting. You finally won against me,” James said. “I know! We have to celebrate,” she said as she made a cute face. She was so happy to finally beat James. However, she forgot to notice that James was really referring to the time she first thought. He was smiling as he saw Ann dancing. But it was actually obvious on his face that he was feeling something wrong.

After that game, they still played a couple. But Ann noticed something. “Are you okay James?” she asked for she saw James eyes. “I’m just feeling a little bit tired,” he replied as he fixed his oxygen. “Let’s stop playing then. Have some rest,” she suggested. “No. It’s okay. I really want to play,” he replied. Ann was getting worried but she followed what James said. But after a couple of minutes, James dropped his hand from the table. He lost consciousness. It was like an alarm or something from the machine that suddenly made a sound. Ann panicked. She immediately pressed the emergency button. The doctor and nurses arrived, as well as Edward. “What happened?” Edward asked. “I don’t know. We were just playing when he suddenly lost his consciousness. He said he was just feeling a bit tired,” she stated as she started to cry. Edward hugged her. “It’s okay Ann. He’ll be alright,” he comforted her. “I’m really scared, Edward,” she cried.

After a couple of days, the results of the tests were out. They were on another room. The doctor had to discuss them something really important. “…I’m sorry. But the time has come,” was his last words. Everyone was silent. They all cried discretely. No one dared to talk. They were all in shock. They did not expect it to happen that fast.

When they came back to James’ room, they were surprised to see him. He was sitting on his bed, unusually energized. “Have you had a good rest son?” Rachel asked him. “I think. I don’t know why, but I feel really strong right now,” he said. “That’s good to hear, brother,” Lauren commented. “I… I was actually thinking if I can get a favor?” James said as he looked into Lauren’s eyes. It seemed that she already knew. “Sure, anything for my favorite son,” Rachel said as she hugged him. “Can we go to the beach? To the lighthouse?” he asked. They were all hesitant, even though they were not discussing it, they all thought it was his last wish. “Sure. But we have to talk to your doctor first, okay?” John said. James felt really happy. NINETEEN

NARRATOR’s POV

“It’s normal. Sometimes, they would get unusually strong. He can leave. But you know, what may happen. I’ve discussed with you everything. Just watch over him, carefully,” The doctor said.

After a few days, James, Rachel, along with Ann, her mom, and Edward, went back to the town. Lauren and John went there ahead to check and prepare everything. James wanted to have a picnic there. “I’m excited, I’m gonna see my son already,” Edward shared. “Congratulations,” they all greeted. At the back of the driver’s seat were James, and Ann. He was still wearing his oxygen because he could no longer breathe by himself. They were both wearing their hats. While they were holding hands, he leaned on Ann’s shoulder. “Excited?” she asked. “Certainly,” he replied.

Even though he was really feeling weak, James acted like he was fine. The trip was tiring, but he did it because he badly wanted to go to the beach, their paradise.

When they arrived at the town, they saw Edward’s wife with his son. She went near and greeted everyone. Edward held their son. “Hello, son. I’m your father,” he said as he cuddled him. He went to James. “James, I want you to meet my son, James,” he said. James’ eyes widened. He did not expect Edward to name his son after him. He was touched. He felt loved. He was smiling when he slowly touched the baby’s arms. “Hello, James, nice to meet you,” he said. The baby opened his eyes and stared at him and looked like he was smiling too. After a while, the baby held James’ finger. It gave him goosebumps. When the others saw it, they all beamed. It was as if there as a message behind that act. They did not know, but that scene surely represented something.

Finally, they went to the island by the motor boat. Edward carried James, piggy back style. He gently put him on his bed and asked him to rest first before the picnic. Meanwhile, everyone except Ann, who was with James, was preparing everything. The island was extraordinarily beautiful that day. Everything was perfect, the view, the weather, everything.

After an hour or so, they started. A nice sheet of cloth was laid near the seashore as the foods were properly put in place. After eating, John opened a bottle of wine. He put some on the glasses, only James had to drink fresh juice for the toast. ‘’For James,” he said. “For James,” they all repeated. James was not sure, but he was seeing the view a bit blurry. He tried to compose himself well, for the others not to worry. “Thank you everyone. Thank you,” he sincerely thanked.

Later that day, “Ann, Edward, would you mind going with me?” James asked. Ann saw Lauren smiled. “Where?” she asked. “At the cliff. I have a surprise,” he answered. Ann was clueless, but she went with him.

Again, Edward piggy backed him. Ann, on the other hand was helping him bring his oxygen tank. When they finally reached the cliff, Ann noticed that candles on small brown paper bags. A sheet of cloth was again laid on one area. The fancy box and letters were there too. There were three mugs and a jar. “Aww, James. You thought about this?” touched, she asked. “I seek help from Lauren. I wanted to surprise you and Edward,” he replied. “This is really sweet,” he said as he put James down. “Hot chocolate,” Ann said as she started to pour on each mug. She assisted James in drinking. “This is the best hot chocolate I’ve had so far. It is extremely good,” James commented. They had a couple of chitchats until Edward noticed the box. “Why did you bring this for?” he asked. “I just wanted to finish reading the letters. Having the box while doing that would also be great,” he said. “So let’s start then, the sun is going to set soon,” Ann suggested. She got the next letters and started to read. She and Edward read the letters as James listened. “So, let’s start. Edward, you have a couple of letters from us, care to read?” Ann asked. Edward got the letter and started to read it.

7th Year, April 10, 5:52 a.m.

“Dear Edward,

It is our first day here in the city. It’s sad that you’re not here. You are being missed. I hope to see you again soon. Take care always. Love you wife as much as you loved us.

Yours,Ann”

“You did not send this?” he asked. “Sorry, I actually forgot,” Ann apologized. They read a couple of letters more. Those were the letters they have made since college.

8th Year, January 15, 10:48 p.m.

“Dear James,

Thanks for always being there for me. Today won’t even be possible if you did not push me to go to the university. I can’t imagine the world without you. Now that Edward is no longer with us, it is only you and me. But as what I have said, we can do this,

Always,Ann”

7th Year, June 2, 11:39 p.m.“Dear Ann,

Everything seems to be falling apart. I don’t know what to do. I did not know that he was actually my dad. I should have figured it out sooner. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt like this. I hope you come here at the lighthouse. For sure I will feel much better.

Yours,James”

They have read all the letters except for James and Ann’s last letters for each other. Ann was hesitant to read her letter at first, but Edward and James asked her to, she had no choice.

Always,

Ann”

Ann surely felt awkward as she read her letters to James. He, on the other hand, was just smiling. After reading, Ann did not talk. “Can you read my letter for you then?” he asked.

8th Year October 5, 11:20 p.m.

“Dear Ann,

I feel terrible. We haven’t spoken for weeks now. When are you going to forgive me? I regret the words I have said. But I know there is no way to take them back. I’m sorry. I know I’ve hurt you so much.

Yours,

James”

Afterwhich, she folded the letter the same way it was folded. “I did not know we

had the same feelings. We were both confused,” she said. “Yeah,” he whispered. James’ voice was starting to tone down. “But we are still friends, right?” she worriedly asked. Edward wasn’t talking. He was just listening to Ann and James’ conversation, facing on the other side of the beach. Ann couldn’t help it, she wanted confess. “James, I…” she was cut when James held her hand. He handed her another letter. “You have another one? You did not ask me!” she said. “It’s okay, just read it,” he whispered as he held her hand. They were holding each others’ hands the whole time she was reading the letter. It was getting dark, the sun was about to finally set in a few minutes. James leaned comfortably as she listened to Ann read his letter.

8th Year, December 11, 12:38 a.m.

“Dear Ann,

It’s me, James. I asked Lauren to write because I couldn’t anymore. I don’t know why I am even writing. I did not ask you. I want to thank you for always being there. I was happy that you finally forgave me. It is just saddening that I am in this condition. But don’t you worry. I’m fighting for everyone. I’ll get well soon.”

James was smiling as he watched the sunset. He was still holding her hands. As she continued reading, his eyes blurred again that is why he decided to close them.

“… Nah, I think I should stop beating around the bush. There is just one thing that I want you to know. I don’t know if it would matter, but I love you.

Yours,James”

The moment she read his name, she felt James’ hand loosen. Before she could even think what that “I love you” means, she was shocked. She was keeping herself calm as she checked on James. “James?” she asked as she held his beautiful face. “James?” she called again, this time, her tears started to fall. Edward turned to them and saw him. He couldn’t move at first, as he saw Ann. “James?” he shook him. James was no longer replying. He checked on his chest and there was no heartbeat. “Please. Wake up?” Ann, unsure, asked James. They did not know what to do, they were devastated. The sun finally set the same time he left. “Wake up, wake up. Don’t leave us. I haven’t said the same words yet. Why too soon?” Ann cried as he hugged him as tight as she could. She did not get any response. “Wake up,” she repeated those two words for the next fifteen minutes. After that, no word was heard from her anymore.

NARRATOR’s POV

A few days later, they went back to the beach. As they were on the boat, they scattered his ashes around the island. Everyone bid their farewell. They threw in petals of white roses along with his ashes. “Goodbye Brother,” Lauren whispered as she cried. That goodbye was peaceful yet heartbreaking. It was too soon. They had a hint, but no one expected James to leave them at least, on that day.

After a week, Ann was still depressed. She never talked. She did not even share how she felt about what happened. She missed classes. She just stayed on her bedroom and cried herself to sleep. She still couldn’t believe that her bestfriend was no longer with her. After eight years of friendship, she wouldn’t be able to see him

Page 30: To the Beach

again.

One day, she asked Edward to go with her to the lighthouse. She wanted to visit him. She wanted to go back to their world, their paradise. It was their hideout, their heaven. Before, everytime the three of them would go there, everything was optimistic. They were always happy. But that day, she was ready. She knew that she would feel different this time. She would feel empty, alone, and saddened.

“I want to swim,” she said as soon as she got out of the boat. Edward let her. From the cliff, she jumped to the sea. It took her about a minute before she rose up from diving. She scanned the infinite view, but as expected, James wasn’t there. He would never be.

After a while, she took two rocks. She tapped them together under the water. She put her ears above, and listened to the sound they made. She remembered the day James taught her that. She was amazed. Nothing was really new about it. Nothing special. What was significant to her was James laughter. He laughed so hard for he had tricked Ann.

It took her some minutes before she started walking alone in the seashore of the island. Edward was watching her from afar. He felt how hurt she was. She still cannot get over the fact that James has left already. He understood, he also knew it was not easy. Everybody is hurting.

ANN’s POV

As I was walking along the seashore, I felt alone. Why does it have to hurt this way? I am missing him, so much. It doesn’t feel the same way again. The touch of the sea isn’t as warm as it used to be. But sometimes, I can feel him hugging me through the waves of the water. When I put my ears to hear the sound of the rocks I tap together, I hear his laughter. The way he laughs is music to my ears. The way he smiles is a cure to my loneliness. Everything about him is pleasing to my eyes. I wish I could turn back the time. Maybe a little more time, I could have said “I love you.”

I went inside the lighthouse again, first time after he died. I lied down on the bed he used to sleep on. It was soft and comfortable. But it was not enough to ease the painful feeling. I observed the room and saw the colorful designs. I know there were colors, but for me they are all black.

I got up from bed to look on things. It was not rainy season, but I heard raindrops falling. Then I remembered him again.

“James!

He hated rain. I know that. But why does it seem like it was him who poured it from above? Is he crying too? Is he hurt, the same way I am? I don’t know. I am never going to know, until we meet again.

“Whew! I did not know rain is going to fall,” Edward exclaimed as he entered the lighthouse. He took a towel and started drying his hair. I was looking at him when I noticed something unusual. I am positive. It has never been there before.

TWENTY ONE

ANN’s POV

Page 31: To the Beach

“What is that?” I asked as I went near Edward. At his side was a cabinet and on top of it was a small box. I opened it and saw a DVD and a letter. The letter said “To Ann” and below “Read after watching the video,” was written. It was James’ handwriting, I know. “Can we go home, now?” I asked him. “Why?” he asked back. “I need to watch this,” I replied. “Can’t we do it here?” he asked again. “How. We don’t have a player here,” I responded. “Looks like you are wrong,” he replied as he got a portable DVD player from his bag. I was confused, how did he know? “How?” I asked. “I knew it. James asked me to give it to you when the right time comes. I have no idea when that time has to be. But I believe it is now,” he replied. That moment, I felt goosebumps. I had no idea what I am going to see on that video.

I opened the player and put on the disc. After a few minutes, it started playing. I saw Lauren, she was fixing the camera while James was trying to sit properly. “Hi Ann!” she waved. They were at the hospital, James was already bald then. He was wearing his hat already. I don’t know when was that filmed, but he seemed to have energy there yet. Lauren fixed the camera and focused it on James’ face. “I’ll let you watch alone. I’ll just be outside,” Edward said.

“Hi Ann!” he started. “It’s me.” he continued. “Well, you might have read the letter already. Have you?” he asked. I was confused if the letter he was referring to was the one I was holding then. I was about to open it when I heard him again. “No no no no. Not that one,” he stopped. I chuckled. How the hell did he know? “I was just kidding. The letter I’m referring to was the last letter you have read with me. The one Lauren wrote,” he said. What the? How did he know? I was really confused. Was he tricking me or something? Did he plan everything? He must be good. “Well. I have to discuss you something. Remember when you asked my about finding your greatest love? Your true love? I think I know the answer now,” he said. I stopped the video and tried to remember what he was saying.

-FLASHBACK-

-END OF FLASHBACK-

I continued watching the video. “I guess, it’s not about finding your greatest or one true love, Ann. It is about realizing it,” he proceeded. Hearing those words caught me. It was like I already knew what he was trying to say. I listened to him carefully. “Not too long ago, I think I have realized mine. And I am pretty sure you know her, very much,” he said. Was it Tricia? That lined confused me again.

“There are actually a lot of things I like about her. First, she had always been there for me. Through thick and thin. Second, she had this spirit that never failed to uplift me. How is that?” he said as if he was bragging. “We had a couple of fights, I know. But we pulled it off,” he carried on. “Third, she has a very beautiful face. if you have seen the most beautiful woman in the world, that has to be her,” he said. Now, I am jealous of that girl. Whoever she is. I looked on the video again but James wasn’t talking. He stared at the camera for a while before he smiled. “And the last and most important reason is that…” he teased. “Listen to me carefully,” he said. “That person… is you,” he said. Oh his voice was so sweet. I did not know why but my tears fell again. This time, however, it was not out of grief but happiness.

“It’s you Ann. My greatest love is you,” he said softly. He did not talk for about

Page 32: To the Beach

a minute. He was staring at the camera. He was staring at me. I felt like was melting. I could feel him. He must be here, with me. “Say it!” I heard Lauren whisper behind the camera. “Stop it!” James retorted. Lauren faced the lens of the camera on her. “James peaked on your letter!” she said. “Lauren!” James’ eyes widened. He was really angry that time. Lauren focused the camera to him again. “Sorry,” she apologized. “Yeah. I guess I’m caught. I…” he said before he breathed deeply. “I read one of your letters. About your confusion,” he said as his eyes were closed. He looked cute, I admit. But how can he do that? We promised! “I couldn’t help it!” he defended himself. “I was just curious,” he continued.

“Are you mad?” he asked as if we were talking, live. “Definitely,” I thought aloud. “I hope you are not. Because I’ll be sad,” he said as his mood changed. And it changed again. He seemed happy when suddenly thought of something. “Oh yeah! I know something. I heard you,” he said. “I know you love me, too. You said it,” he declared. “What the hell? How come? He was…” I was cut off when he talked again. “During my first night. You thought I was sleeping already,” he said.

-FLASHBACK-

James was sleeping when Ann sat beside his bed. She ran her fingers through his hair as she started to cry. “Why now? When I finally got the courage to confess. I love you James, more than just a bestfriend. I love you,” she said as she weeped

-END OF FLASHBACK-

“You heard it?” I asked as if he was with me. I couldn’t believe it. I was really happy. I thought he never heard me say those words. Finally. “I heard it. I would never forget that day. The day you said I love you,” he said. The screen turned black. It must be finished. I wiped my tears and I smiled. “I love you James,” I whispered to the air as I looked up. I was about to close the player when it showed something again. “Hey!!!” he shouted as he was waving on the camera. “Don’t cut it. I haven’t said the words yet!” he said. “Do you even think I wouldn’t let hear it from me?” he asked. He cleared his throat. “I was really waiting for the right time to say this,” he commented. He looked straight to the camera. “I love you, Ann Li,” he finally said with his sweetest smile. “I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you…” he repeated saying it with different intonations. That was really sweet. He even made cute faces. “…I love you. I love you. I love you,” he said. He sighed and said “I love you, Ann Li,” for the last time. He smiled. He was really happy. It was as if he wasn’t feeling ill. He was gorgeous. “Now, to end this. I am asking you to read that letter. At this moment,, I actually haven’t written that. But I will, soon. Keep it, okay?” he asked. “And for one last time, I love you,” he said. This time, the video really stopped. It was done.

I opened the letter slowly to see what was inside.

“Dear Ann,

I love you.

Forever,James”

I knew it was James’, but the handwriting was almost a scribble. “He must have written this before the trip,” I thought aloud. “I love you James, you are my greatest love,” I said. “Finally,” I heard someone commented. It was Edward. I wiped my tears again. “Finally?” I asked Edward. “Finally, the rain had stopped. And finally, you already know. Yes, he wrote that before the trip. He fixed everything,” he said. How could James do that? All of those were the sweetest

Page 33: To the Beach

things. The rain has stopped, it must be a sign. James was already at ease, in heaven.

“I knew it. You loved one another,” he said. I only smiled and hugged Edward. I did not know why. Everything that I just saw and heard must be the reason. I felt happy. Happier than ever. His video changed everything. His letter was the best among all the ones I have read. It was as if heavy load was taken away from my shoulders. It was a great feeling. To love, and to be loved. One thing’s for sure. Even if we are not together, he will be in my heart. Not just always, but forever.

EPILOGUE

After James’ death, John and Rachel did not stop talking. Slowly, they became good friends, more than the civil setup they have had when he was sick. Lauren, on the other hand married a guy that he met during a trip in Australia. Dina remained as a happy single mom. She never failed to support Ann in the career she chose to take. Tricia returned to the country, and eventually came back in Ivan’s arms. He changed, he knew he loved Tricia. He felt they were actually meant to be.

It has been almost two years, today is James’ birthday. Ann went back to the town alone. Surprisingly, it was raining really hard. The next moment, she was in the hospital’s Emergency Room.

The sound was heard. The apparatus read flat. “I’m sorry, we did all that we can,” the doctor declared.

The sunrise woke her up. She was at the beach, their paradise. She stood up and scanned the area. Nobody was around. She was wondering how she got there. She couldn’t remember. She looked at herself and she was wearing a long white beach dress. Her long hair looked even more beautiful with the headband made of flowers. She was shocked when she heard something. “What is it?” she thought.

She tried to follow the sound. It was a familiar one. She hasn’t gone far yet when she saw a familiar figure of a man. He was wearing a pair pants, folded up to his knees and a white cardigan. The sound she was hearing was from him. “Excuse me?” she asked. The man turned around and to her surprise, it was James. He was holding the piano pencil case, playing the Happy Birthday song. Slowly, he went near her as he was still playing. “Happy Birthday…” he sang. “…To You,” she ended.

“Happy tenth year of friendship, Ann,” he said. “Happy tenth year,” she replied. James held her hand and made their way to the seashore. “I can’t believe we would meet again,” she started. James did not reply. He just stared at her. After a few moments, he snatched a kiss from her. Ann’s eyes widened. “Aha!” she exclaimed. James ran and Ann chased him. When she caught him, he turned around hugged her from her back It was so tight. “I love you,” he whispered to her ears as he kissed her again. “I love you, too,” she replied.

Seven years after…

“James!” John exclaimed. The nine year- old James was running to his father when she bumped into a girl, almost at the same age as his. It was so forceful that she fell on the floor and got her knees bleeding. James got scared. “Dad?” he called. John went near them. He carried the little girl and brought her on their car’s seat. She was crying. James was really scared that he was hiding at his father’s back. “Don’t worry, little girl, this won’t hurt,” he comforted her. James’ and the little girl’s eyes met. “I’m sorry,” James whispered, enough for her to hear.

Page 34: To the Beach

After a while, her mother found her. “Mommy!” she exclaimed as she ran to her. John apologized in behalf of James. When they were about to leave, James called her. “Hey!” he shouted. She turned around as James walked closer. “To let you know that I’m really sorry, I am giving this to you. This is really important to me. I hope you’d take care of it,” he said as he handed her the piano pencil case. It was a bit old and doesn’t even work anymore. Seeing it though, made her happy. She got it and smiled at him. “I’m James,” he introduced himself as he initiated a handshake. “Thank you, I’m Ann. Nice to meet you,” she replied.
