One of the things that fascinates me periodi- cally, is how people respond to truth. For example, have you ever considered how some respond to their family doctor when he says, “Look, you have to do something about your ___________ (weight/stress/drinking)”? The typical response isn’t, “Thank you doctor for telling me the truth.” Often the patient waits until he’s out of the doctor’s office and then says to whomever is close by, “Can you believe he told me to . . . ?” Ignoring the truth may be easy, but it’s not beneficial. I suspect we’ve all had similar experiences once people find out we are followers of Christ. I was on a flight to Florida several years ago, seated next to a Roman Catholic lady who was very polite until I answered her question, “So, what do you do for a living?” In my world, that’s often the death knell to conversing. After she spent about five minutes reminding me how awful Baptist pastors are, she said something like, “You seem nice. You might be ok for all I know.” Thank you. Thank you very much. And I hadn’t even said much of anything about faith. So then I told I her I thought the Pope was a sissy for wearing red shoes just to see what she would do (just kidding). So what happens when we’re told the truth? It really depends on the mindset of the individual. If we value truth and seek truth we’ll find truth (Proverbs 2:4). But often that means discarding allegiance to a faulty assumption, a wrong idea, a mis- guided group, or a prideful disposition. If we maintain an open heart, ready to be challenged and encouraged by the Word of God, it will likely happen. I’ve found through the years a big part of my openness has to do with my willingness to set aside certain presuppositions, and that is, quite frankly, often difficult. For example, if I thought all Presbyterians were snobs, I never would have listened to Dr. Steve Brown (as you know, one of my favorite Bible teachers). If I’m not willing to hear a different slant about something (and sometimes we should) then I won’t. The real question with which we have to grapple is, “Am I open to the truth?” I know that sounds odd, but that’s the real key. I’ve explained to people some biblical truth and they’ve said, “Man, that makes perfect sense. I think you’re right” but they won’t “buy in” because it has gone against what they were taught or what they thought or what their personal prefer- ence happens to be. Sometimes it happens because of something in which they have a vested interest; to change would mean some discomfort. I’ve had it happen with biblical truth, moral truth, and academic truth. And like the “rich young ruler” in Scripture, they walk away sorrowful because they were unwilling to embrace the truth. To tell the truth . . . we don’t always like the truth. Isn’t that true? We don’t like new paradigms of thinking or being challenged to move beyond that which is comfortable. I suppose that’s natural human nature (which ought to make it suspect in the first place). Never fear asking questions. Don’t be afraid to challenge your own presuppositions. Live your life searching for truth. “. . . and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” Jesus (John 8:32 ESV). First Baptist Church Kearney June 9, 2013 Dr. Kenneth J. Parker

To Tell the Truth

For more reasons than I can count, I’m fascinated by human nature; I don’t mean the proclivity toward sin as much as just the way we act and react. One of the things that fascinates me periodi-cally, is how people respond to truth. I suspect we’ve all had similar experiences once people find out we are followers of Christ. I was on a flight to Florida several years ago, seated next to a Roman Catholic lady who was very polite until I answered her question, “So, what do you do for a living?” In my world, that’s often the death knell to conversing.
