RECOMMENDATION That it be a recommendation to Council: That Council recommends the naming of the new loop road within the South Edge Subdivision Bonanni Circuit to the Place Names Committee. REPORT 1. BACKGROUND Council was approached by Mr. K Patterson Director - Australian Property Projects Pty Ltd regarding the new subdivision at the Heavitree Gap caravan park (Refer Attachment A). A new public road is to be created (refer Attachment B) that extends into this land from Palm Circuit. Given that the road is essentially a loop road advice from the Place Names Committee is that the road will be identified as a Circuit. 2. DISCUSSION The Australian Property Projects has approached the Place Names Committee, and in making its recommendation, has submitted to Council the following name for consideration. This report is to provide Council with information regarding the naming of a road within the South Edge Subdivision.

1. BACKGROUND

Council was approached by Mr. K Patterson Director - Australian Property Projects Pty Ltd regarding the new subdivision at the Heavitree Gap caravan park (Refer Attachment A).

Ennio Bonanni was born in the Italian alps in 1927 and immigrated to Australia in 1952. He moved to Darwin in 1953 and worked as a carpenter for the construction company Gerussi and Moretti. In 1955 Ennio's brothers Bruno and Carlos, moved to Darwin.

A few years later the brothers moved to Alice Springs and then formed their own building company. Their younger brother Aldo emigrated from Italy in 1961 and joined them in Alice Springs. Their company began making bricks in the late 60's and were in high demand through the boom years. Ennio worked until he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of almost 75. He passed away in 2003.

Full Name: Douglas Edward // Gilbert Mitchell Green

Abbreviated Biography:

Douglas Edward Green was born in Adelaide in 1929 and his brother Gilbert was born in 1931. They relocated to the Centre in the early 1950's to work as fencing contractors. In 1958 they obtained a "special purpose" lease to establish a tourist resort on Loves Creek Station. The lease covered 243ha and included the abandoned Old Loves Creek Homestead on the Ross River to the east of Alice Springs.

The business opened in 1959 after the homestead and cabins were restored. During this time, each brother married and had large families (Douglas had 9 children and Gilbert had 5). They ran the resort until 1983.

Douglas passed away in Adelaide in April 1986, aged 57. Gilbert passed away in Kingston SA in June 2004, aged 72.

Name: Guth

Full Name: Henk Guth

Abbreviated Biography:

Henk Guth was born in Holland in 1921. He was part of the underground movement during WWII and used his artistic skills to remove the Star of David from Jewish passports. He was then captured and sent to a Nazi concentration camp.

Henk migrated to Australia in 1960 and worked as an artist. He moved to Alice Springs in the mid 1960's, where he opened the Art Gallery Guth. In 1971 plans were drawn up for the Panorama Guth, a museum of aboriginal culture and art gallery. He also created a 360 degree painting of the central

Australian landscape which was the centrepiece of the gallery. Unfortunately it was destroyed by fire in 2005.

It is said he painted thousands of pieces over his career in Australia. Henk passed away in Melbourne in July 2003, aged 81.

Name: Pool

Full Name: Leslie Joseph Pool

Abbreviated Biography:

Leslie Joseph Pool (11/08/1911 - 24/07/1998), Electrician, arrived in Alice Springs from Quorn S.A aged 25, as supervisor for starting the electrical supply in Alice Springs, selecting with other Alice Springs identities the site of Alice Springs' first power station. Later, Les travelled throughout the NT, helping install a lighting plant in Katherine as well as wiring the hospitals in Katherine and Pine Creek. He also installed homing beacons and runway lighting for Dr Clyde Fenton, the legendary "Flying Doctor" and they were regular tennis opponents. During WWII, Les was responsible for installing airfield lighting and navigation aids between Alice Springs and Katherine as well as Daly Waters. He later became supervisor of electrical installation for aircraft repair.

Name: Silcock

Full Name: Darc’y James (Jimmy) Silcock

Abbreviated Biography:

Born at Henley Beach, Adelaide in 1922, Jimmy Silcock died aged 82 years in 2004.

As a young man he joined up in WW II. Jimmy was stationed in Darwin, England and PNG during the war. He met his wife Irene in a pub in England during the war and they were married on 16 December 1944.

Post-war Jimmy and Irene lived in Adelaide for a time and eventually moved to Alice Springs where their six children were raised. Jimmy was a trucking man. He had driven trucks during the war and after moving to Alice Springs he drove for T J Richards out of Alice Springs for the rest of his working life.

Shell road train driver Andy McEwan, who had been a friend of the Silcock family since childhood, had the task of spreading Jimmy ashes at Barrow Creek in August 2005. Barrow Creek was chosen as Jimmy had been stationed there with the 43rd Battalion during the war.

Full Name: Wallace (Wally) St Clair

Abbreviated Biography:

Wallace (Wally) St Clair (1928-2004) was born in Renmark, South Australia, one of six children to the second marriage of William and Lilac St Clair. Orphaned in 1936, Wally grew up in an orphanage in Adelaide. He worked in various jobs in South Australia before enlisting in the army and serving in Korea from 1953-1955. After returning to Australia and getting out of the Army, Wally moved to Tennant Creek to spend time with his sister, Lilac and her family, while working in the Peko Mine and fencing on stations before moving to Alice Springs to be with his brother Archie and family. One of his first jobs was driving his brother Archie's taxi and it was soon after that he met Margaret whom he married in 1956. Over the years until his retirement in 1976, Wally worked on various jobs such as road train driver carting cattle, on the north Stuart Highway bitumen gang (Department of Transport and Works), in the goods shed (railways), taxi driver (for Bill Bohnning) Chainman (Land and Survey), construction worker on Collier Creek Bridge (Favaro's) and road works Lasseter Highway/Mt Ebenezer (Henry Walker). Wallace passed away in Alice Springs in 2004.

Name: Waldron

Full Name: Harold Waldron

Abbreviated Biography:

Harold Waldron was a gold prospector in Central Australia from 1934. He began prospecting many trackless places with camels and horses. Harold acquired an exclusive prospecting area to search for gold. He was found dead in October 1937, aged 61. It was thought he was thrown from either a camel or horse and dragged for several hundred yards which resulted in his death. He was buried near lower Lander River.

Full Name: Mabel Walsh

Abbreviated Biography:

Mabel Walsh was born in Balaklava, South Australia, in 1896. Mabel arrived in Alice Springs in 1932 after her husband Thomas Walsh had moved to Alice Springs two years prior to establish a bakery shop. Thomas with the help of Mabel ran the bakery until his death in 1941. Mabel decided to continue the bakery business to support her children with the assistance of Kurt Johannsen who provided her a vehicle for deliveries. During World War II, the Australian Army had a large contingent of men based in Alice Springs and Mabel expanded her bakery to include a dining room so she could supply meals for the soldiers and government workers. Mabel decided to lease out the

bakery and move to Darwin to establish another bakery in partnership with William Robertson which was called "Robertson & Walsh" and was located in Smith Street in 1945. Mabel generously donated bread to shelters and institutions for the less fortunate. Mabel died at Alice Springs in 1980 aged 80.
