Weekly Halachah—Parshas Bo R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]
May I feed wild birds on Shabbos Shirah (February 11th)?
There is an old custom of leaving grain or bread for birds on Shabbos Shirah, the Shabbos when we read Parshas Beshalach in shul. The custom is linked to the parshah; some suggest it is a reward for their song at the Sea, while others link it to a midrash that birds ate the decoy manna spread by Dasan and Aviram on Shabbos.
Some oppose this custom, insisting that the bird food be left out before Shabbos. This is because the sages forbade feeding wild animals on Shabbos (1) because there may be strain involved and (2) because one might forget the laws of Shabbos and trap these creatures. They only permitted us to feed animals which depend on us for food.
Other authorities defend the practice of putting out food on Shabbos Shirah, arguing that there is no strain involved and that the birds are beyond trapping when the food is placed outside. Further, we actually do this not for the birds' sake, but for the sake of our own custom.

QUESTIONS FOR PARSHAS BO BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: (10:7) Why only at this point did Pharaoh’s servants finally find their voice and urge him to free the Jews?
Second Aliyah: (10:21) Why was there no preamble or warning for Darkness?
Third Aliyah: (10:24) How could Pharaoh summon Moshe in the midst of Darkness?
Fourth Aliyah: (11:10) Why does the Torah here, before the 10th plague, state that Moshe and Aharon performed “all” the plagues?
Fifth Aliyah: (12:22) Why was Hashem insistent that the blood be painted on all three sides of the door, the lintel and the doorposts – wouldn’t have one surface sufficed?
Sixth Aliyah: (12:31) How could Pharaoh communicate with Moshe if Moshe had already promised that he’d never see his face again (in 10:29)?
Seventh Aliyah: Why does the Torah mention twice in this section about entering Eretz Israel (13:5 and 13:11)?
