"Buckey Blue" did not tell the formations, however, that clouds en route to the IP wer ae high as 26,500.

Along the oourae to the IP, th ppF operator gave the diatanoe and b arin of the IP. Upon reaching the clear area beyond the und roast, the leader• started lookin aeveral miles ahead for the IP, but aoon discovered that it had been ov rahot by about 10 milea. A turn onto courae for th target waa made then, but since another Wing was aeen approaching the target on the briefed courae and at an angle to oura, it waa neoeuary to -.lee a lar e S tur to g t behind th•• Thia ahortene4 th r so what but still left eLough tim for synchronisation. Theae short turn which put the formation very close behind the other Win , plus the shorter run, prOb• ably accounted at leaet partially for the abaenoe of flak burata i our box. Pr vioua bomuings ao oODlpletely covered th target area with aaoke that it wa.a dif'ficult to find even nearby re• ferenoe point• by which to looat the MPI. The incendiary burats were vilible t o gh the a oke and appeared to be on the auigned MPI.

The ing overrun the IP a few :miles. We made th turn, uncovered for a viaual run, and cam. in on a magn tic heading of 28~0 directly, b hind the Lead Box. Smoke from the bo • or th s ·preceedin Sections COTered the target area and an extr ely h avy haze prevented us fr seeing th~ MPI proper. Rate and courae wer both killed by eana of lines drawu on a grid and placed ao as o cross over th assigned aiming point. These lines extended outaide of the smoked area and aynchronization was made on objecta on these lines. Thus th assi ed MPI waa uaed a• an aiming point, in an artifioual mann r. Bomba were dropped and reaulte were excellent.

THE FIRST SCOUTING UNIT (4 X 51 A/C) CALL SIGN -BUCKEYE RED~ WILL INTERCEPT THE LEAD CBW OF 1ST BD AT ENGLISH COAST OUT AND WILL SCOUT ROUTE TO HONBURG REPORTING ON SAARBRUCKEN AND FRANKFURT AS A SPOOF. .
THE SECOND SCOUTING UNIT ( 8 X P51 A/C > CALL SIGN BUCKEYE BLUEw WILL INTERCEPT BOMBERS IN VICINITY OF AACTEN AND WILL SCOUT ROUTE TO SPEYER. FROM ~ SPEYER wBUCKEYE BLUEw WILL SCOUT ALL TARGETS ASSIGNED 1ST BD IN ORDER, BY TIME, OF BEING ATTACKED REPORTING TO CBW LEADERS OF FIRST UNITS ATTACKING EACH TARGET, THE WEATHER 20 MINUTES PRIO~ TO TARGET TIME. ALL TRANSMISSIONS BY SCOUTING FORCE WILL BE ON DIV FREQUENCY VHF. ENTIRE FLIGHT OF SCOUTING FORCE TO BE MADE AT BOMBERS BRIEFED ALTITUDE.
