To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the creation of Willard Stake, The Stake Relief Society organization is taking on a project to make life bet-ter for young women in Africa. According to the blog found at http://willardstakeservice.blog-spot.com, “In Africa, the orphan population has skyrocketed over recent years. ...With little to no federal funding, the orphanages struggle to feed, educate, and clothe the children they house – often twice as many children as they have room and beds for. There is so much that needs do-ing; so much that a few hundred women in Willard, Utah can’t do, but there is one thing we found that we can do...We can give them back days lost each month when they are unable to attend school or play outside – days when they are resigned to their beds during their menstrual cycle because they have no feminine protec-tion. Due to sanitation, sewer, and availability circumstances, the traditional (and disposable) products we use in the US are not feasible in Africa.” An organization called SWAN (Serving Women and Nations) started by combining with Proj-ect Thrive and making 500 re-

usable feminine hygiene kits. They delivered these kits to an orphanage in Kenya accompa-nied by teachings about moral-ity and hygiene. According to the blog, “The girls, rather than be-ing embarrassed at the sensitive issues addressed, were thrilled with the opportunity they had to take care of themselves and take control not only of their present, but also of their future. Since that singular event, SWAN has received dozens of requests from other orphanages...” From now until August 22 of this year, Willard women have been asked to collect and do-nate materials listed on the blog for 500 kits. On August 22, vol-unteers will assemble the kits which will then be donated to SWAN who will deliver them. Questions may be directed to coordinator Josi Kilpack at 435-723-7348. Captain Jason Wilde, Alpha Battery 1/145 Field Artillery of the National Guard in Brigham, attended the Fourth of July com-mittee meeting April 30th to pledge his support to our Willard community. Along with heading up the parade with troops and a Humvee, he and his battalion can bring in a Howitzer tank for display. Captain Wilde’s proud unit are among the most deco-rated in Utah as well as being able to claim a lineage that trac-

es directly back to the Mormon Battalion. Willard City is having a 4th of July poster advertising contest for youth ages 12-18. These will be judged and the top three will receive a prize and be posted for all to see in the City Offices. The theme of the 4th of July event this year is “Historical Flight of Willard.” Posters should encour-age community support as well as list the parade time of 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 4. Poster size is 22 x 28 inches. All posters en-tered will become property of the city, but are reclaimable after the festivities are over. If you would like to enter and have questions, call Ann Larsen at 435-734-0332. Completed posters are due Fri-day, May 29 and may be turned in to the city offices. Also, local artists (photogra-phy, paintings, drawings etc.) are invited to display their works in the City Hall July 3-4. Contact Lynn White (435-723-1463) for more information. Sincere condolences are ex-pressed to family and friends of Richard (Dick) E. Braegger who passed away on April 25, 2009. His funeral was held Wednesday, April 29 at the Willard Church. Long time Corinne resident unhappy with tree removal

The beginning of tree removal in the city is underway. Several weeks ago, the city council voted to have an expert come and help out with some trees that have overgrown their usefulness. THe first tree removal was the willow arched street of 3950 West. These trees were chosen first for

a safety issue. During the winter, the street is never clear of snow and ice as the trees do not allow the sun to help melt the precipi-tation. However, these trees were planted tenderly many years ago by Mel Murphy who carefully trimmed and cared for the trees. Unfortunately, as Mel grew in age, so did the trees, and they quickly took over the street. Murphy has expressed some righteous indignation at the

trees removal. He said he does not understand why the city cannot do the trimming needed to keep the trees’ under control just as he did. The cutting of trees was espe-cially visible of all days, on Earth Day. I really dislike the cutting of trees so someone can sell the wood, Murphy said. Mayor Richard NImori regrets the need for the tree removal , but it something that needs to be done for the safety of the community. “I do hate trees,” he said. The council decided as a group to take this action. Mayors do not vote on issues unless to break a tie vote. So, sad but true, as life march-es on, trees get cut down seed-lings become mature plants and even children grow up. The latest people in the new subdivision has resulted in nine families moving into the city. We welcome them all and look for-ward to meeting and mingling with them.
