To Our Valued Partners and Supporters: You Are the Force That Propels Our Mission

While the “Space Race” was at full throttle in Brevard County, a group of concerned community members set out on a mission of their own: to create a place where people with disabilities could receive services closer to home. In February 1968, this hardworking, diligent group of like-minded citizens opened the doors to what is now Brevard Achievement Center (BAC).

When BAC welcomed its first seven clients to the agency’s Cogswell Street location, no one could have imagined that 50 years later the agency would serve over 4,000 individuals with disabilities in four states. Today, we’re also the largest employer of individuals of all abilities in the county. To say that we are proud of the work we have accomplished would certainly be an understatement.

As an organization, we’ve pushed hard to find creative solutions to the various challenges we’ve encountered this year while we continued to provide excellent service to our program participants, customers and community. As a work family, we’ve laughed together and celebrated milestones. We’ve also cheered for each other’s victories and supported each other through tough situations.

Through it all, we’ve remained dedicated to our mission and laser-focused on helping our clients and co-workers achieve their personal best. We all have much to celebrate when we reflect on the impact we’ve made in 2018. Story after story of our team’s efforts making amazing things happen were a wonderful part of the year.

This year has without a doubt been an almost constant celebration. From the kickoff of our “Every Star Counts” $50,000 capital campaign to the addition of Brevard Achievement Center Enterprises, LLC, BAC has once again had an incredible year as you will see when you explore the pages of our annual report.

Like the pioneers of the final frontier, we will continue reaching for the stars so that people with disabilities have the fuel to achieve personal success each and every day. This is our mission. And we intend to stay the course.

Thank you for igniting our efforts year after year.

After 20 years of service to BAC, Wayne Wells, vice president (VP) of Operations, retired. Carl Stephens, who has served as director of Operations under Wayne, .was promoted to the VP position. Wayne began at BAC as a Financial Analyst and only two years later was promoted to VP. During his tenure, Wayne’s department added approximately 340 jobs for people with disabilities due to the addition of several federal and commercial service contracts. Furthermore, under Wayne’s direction another 40 jobs were created this fiscal year when the United States Specialty Sports Association’s (USSSA) Space Coast Stadium contract came into play. “My life goal is to help people,” Wayne said. “No matter what I’m doing in life, I want to help people succeed.” Based on his two decades of doing so at BAC, we have no doubt that there are many other people outside our organization who will achieve personal success thanks to Wayne.

Not many people can say they’ve been a part of an organization for 50 years, but these ladies certainly can. Brevard Achievement Center (BAC) Board member and volunteer, Diane Payne, right, became a part of the first Board in 1967 before BAC was incorporated. Her husband, Walter J. Payne, also served as BAC President from 1974-1983. Today, Diane volunteers several days a week in BAC’s Human Resources department. Joyce has a different perspective of BAC as she was one of the agency’s first seven clients when it opened its doors in 1968. Although she had a 25-year absence due to her family’s out-of-state move, Joyce eventually returned to Florida and back to the Adult Day Training program because “it gives her a reason to get out of bed.”

“Notorious” Nate achievedhis life-long dream of making a rap video, performing alongside his posse (other Adult Day Training participants). The crew still wear their t-shirts to work at least once a week, showing their pride in what they helped Nate accomplish.

Andy Vega When die-hardPhiladelphia Eagles fan Andy Vega (also known as the Vice President of Habilitation) saw his team win Super Bowl LII, he decided to take his fandom to the next level and hold the Philly Dilly Challenge to raise funds for the Dream. Wish. Wonder. program. Thanks to Andy’s rallying cry, the Challenge scored $2,500 for the program, which factored into BAC’s overall fundraising efforts.

Kyle, a Langley AFBassociate, his parents, and Jackie, an associate at Patrick AFB’s Riverside Dining facility and military veteran, attended SourceAmerica’s Grassroots Advocacy

Conference in May along with President & CEO Amar Patel and Operations Manager Kristen Cavanagh. The group met with congressional members to advocate for AbilityOne employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Said Jackie about her job, “For the first time in a very long time I am able to live in a nice apartment and maintain my financial commitments. Plus, my supervisors have faith in me. Because of that, I can be successful.”

In Remembrance of Senator Hukill On October 2, 2018 SenatorDorothy Hukill lost her courageous battle against cervical cancer. Senator Hukill was a true advocate of Brevard Achievement Center, as well as people with disabilities throughout Florida. She will be greatly missed.

New Event Rallied CommunityOver 50 vintage and modern-day cars and vans hit the pavement on Saturday, August 26 to jumpstart BAC’s first Takin’ It To the Streets road rally-style scavenger hunt event.

Teams of generous sponsors, BAC Board, staff and community members started the rally from the Rockledge Country Club then navigated throughout Central Brevard in search of their next rally point. Little did they know that at each spot a roster of fun disability awareness activities awaited. Once the rally was over, teams returned to the Club for a fun-filled Checkered Flag Finish and Celebration.

Understanding how different disabilities affect everyday life while raising support to fuel programs and services at BAC made this one unforgettable event.
