Transcript of TO OUR FOOD BANK FAMILY HUNGER TO HOPE Our Capital Campaign, From Hunger to Hope, is an opportunity...
Dear Friends:It has been a wonderful and humbling experience to watch this community support our plans for addressing food insecurity in a more comprehensive manner. The new Food Resource and Education Center, opening in May of 2016 on Greenbush Street, will offer hope to struggling families and individuals. We will give out food and simultaneously offer an intake and referral service that seeks to connect those in need of food with other services such as prescription assistance, medical services, job training, housing, and childcare to name but a few. Utilizing community volunteers, Food Finders will offer individual and group classes on household budgeting, wise shopping practices, meal planning, nutrition, and gardening. The new warehouse, opening in March of 2016 on 10th Street, will allow Food Finders to say “yes” to whole truckloads of food that have been turned away for lack of space from our current facility. The new warehouse has been designed to hold and distribute more fresh produce and dairy products. It will double the amount of food that can be stored and enable Food Finders to better serve the 160 pantries and shelters that depend upon us.

With help from you and many other donors Food Finders will be positioned to be a food bank for the future. A food bank that does not simply hand out non-perishable food but one that collaborates with other non-profits to address the many complex issues associated with food inse-curity. We will be able to address the root causes of food insecurity and help our clients increase their self sufficiency. I cannot adequately express my gratitude for all of the donations that have made our build-ing projects a reality. Over the past two years we have seen generous donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, organizations, church-es, and local businesses. We are within $900,000 of our ambitious $4,750,000 goal! Building a better food bank has been a community wide effort and we are profoundly grateful for all the help you have given us.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Katy O’Malley BunderCEO/President

FROM HUNGER TO HOPEOur Capital Campaign, From Hunger to Hope, is an opportunity to advance our vision about how a food bank works in our community. We are redesigning our food bank to be more than just a short-term emergency food resource for our clients. We will leverage our relationships with these families to help them create pathways to an improved economic well-being and empower them to a more self-sus-tained way of life. We will do this by teaching our clients to efficiently use all of their food resources and by connecting them to other social services.
It is in your power to make this vision come to a reality. Our community has supported our mission in so many ways over the years — we cannot solve hunger in North Central Indiana without your help. In the images below, you can see the progress that your support has allowed us to make. Once we transition to these new spaces, we will be better positioned to offer food resources and resolve the root causes of hunger. Together WE WILL cross the finish line!

NEW SERVICES & PROGRAMS
By establishing our Food Resource & Education Center on a bus route which is easily accessed by our clients, Food Finders will be poised to offer new, highly collaborative programs that not only provide food assistance but create long-term, integrated support for families.
1. Nutrition Education. This will include ongoing, education on topics including meal preparation, budgeting, and shopping to maximize SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and food pantry resources.
2. Referral Services. Food is typically the first resource families look for in times of crisis. Our on-site food pantry and other programming, therefore, will give all social service organizations access to a large pipeline of at-risk clients. This will allow us to strengthen our community’s referral system, build stronger relationships between service providers and reduce service redundancies.
3. SNAP Assistance Services. SNAP is the single largest public assistance program available to most food insecure families. In a bus-accessible facility, Food Finders will be able to offer ongoing SNAP assistance for families struggling to complete the program’s lengthy application.
4. Community Food Pantry. Currently, there are very few pantries that offer evening hours in the Lafayette area and even fewer open on the weekends. Food Finders will open a food pantry that serves the working poor population in the evening and weekend hours in an accessible location.

J. P. Lisack Community Pantry
ProgramsThe Food Bank distributes more than seven million pounds of food annually to 86,000 Hoosiers through the combined hunger relief efforts of 160 nonprofit Agency Partners, such as soup kitchens and food pantries; and the Food Bank’s direct service programs; BackPack, Mobile Pantry, Senior Grocery, and Summer Food Service.
SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM
For the sixth year, Food Finders Food Bank sponsored a successful Summer Food Service Program – a partnership between the food bank, USDA and Indiana State Department of Education. With support from the ConAgra Hunger-Free Summer grant, our community feeding sites, and SFSP volunteers, we were able to provide 22,175 healthy, nutritious meals to children across 24 feeding sites in six counties. Throughout the 10-week program, an average of 453 free lunches were distributed each day to children who would have otherwise gone without. In addition to lunch, thousands of pounds of fresh produce and recipes were distributed to participants in high need areas via mini farmer’s markets and produce drops.
SENIOR GROCERY PROGRAM
Food Finders’ Senior Grocery Program currently operates in four counties serving an average of 430 low-income senior citizens each month. More than 70,500 pounds of food was distributed through our partner sites in Tippecanoe, Jasper, Pulaski, and Miami Counties in 2015. While the original funding for this program ran out in 2014, our staff has worked to find creative ways to continue serving this high-need and often overlooked population by using volunteers to pack senior grocery bags and to distribute them in a similar fashion to our Mobile Pantry Program.
8
PARTNER AGENCIES
Food Finders works to provide food to more than 160 agencies, mostly food pantries, throughout our 16-county area to meet the need for food assis-tance throughout our territory. If an additional food pantry is needed, we establish it. In 2015 the Food Bank worked with The Baptist Student Foundation and The Purdue University Office of the Dean of Students to establish the ACE pantry located at the Baptist Student Foundation near the Purdue cam-pus. John Baier, an organizer of the pantry repre-senting Sigma Pi fraternity said, “It’s something that, with the increasing cost of attending college, can give students some relief. Maybe they can extend their dollar a little more somewhere else.”
SCHOOL PANTRY PROGRAM
2015 saw the addition of Food Finders Food Bank’s second school-based pantry. The Congress Street United Methodist Church partnered with Oakland Elementary School in Lafayette to establish a pantry located at the school. With more than 70 percent of their students participating in the Nation-al School Lunch Program, the school and church partnership will help students and their families gain access to food resources in a more convenient place and time, as well as to provide healthy food choices such as fresh produce and milk. Quiana McCalip of Lafayette shopped at the pantry on its first day open. She called the pantry convenient and helpful stating, “even though I work it’s difficult being a single mom. This helps tie us over until the next paycheck*.”

MOBILE PANTRY PROGRAM
Designed to be a barrier-free distribution, our Mobile Pantry Program visits communities where there are fewer food resources to meet the increased demand for emergency and supplemental food. October 2014 through September 2015 saw the Mobile Pantry Program distribute over 1.6 million pounds of food across our service area. Our Mobile Pantry truck, in conjunction with our program sponsors and dedicat-ed volunteers, served 28,971 households consisting of 92,237 individuals.
9
BACKPACK PROGRAM
Food Finders Food Bank’s BackPack Program operates in 15 counties and serves more than 3,300 children each week during the school year. Between October 2014 and September 2015 Food Finders, with the help of each program’s dedicated packing partners, distributed nearly 116,000 back-packs containing six to eight pounds of nutritious food to needy children. Each bag provides necessary food support for the weekend when school breakfast and lunch are not available.
BORNLEARNING
New in 2015, Food Finders partnered with the United Way of Greater Lafayette to provide ‘take-home bags’ filled with fresh, healthy ingredients and recipes for the Bornlearning Academy™. Schools within the Lafayette and Tippecanoe School Corporation host Academies designed to welcome families to the school and help them prepare their children for school.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU to our volunteers
Our volunteers are truly part of our team and without them we would not be able to make important strides against hunger across our broad service area. In 2015, our volun-teers teamed up with our staff to earn the national food safety accreditation from American Institute of Baking. With their support, we introduced new volunteer training pro-grams to ensure the food bank meets the strict food safety standards set forth by AIB. Ultimately this will ensure that our hungry neighbors receive safe, quality food. Thank you, volunteers, for your dedication.
