Department News:

We kicked off the last month of 2016 with the annual Kiwanis Christmas Parade. The parade was very well attended and brought several thousand people to Main Street to watch the parade. The weather could not have been more cooperative. It was cold enough to enhance the anticipation of Christmas, but warm enough to be enjoyable.

Throughout December, the police department had several activities and community events. Some of the highlights include:

• December 6th- Lieutenant Jon Holbrook was formally promoted and took his oath of office at the regular council meeting. Lt. Holbrook and his family were greeted by Town Council after the ceremony.

• December 8th- Officer Mark Farris graduated from Basic Law Enforcement Training at the Southwest Law Enforcement Training Academy. Mark earned the Physical Fitness Award, outpacing the other attendees in physical performance measures. Officer Farris is currently completing his field training with our training officers. Officer Farris is a great addition to the staff. We look forward to him serving our community.

• December 10th- The police department held our annual Christmas Party at the Coomes Recreation Center. The evening was full of food and fellowship, and provided the officers with a chance to socialize with their co-workers and families.

• December 10th- At the Christmas party each year we announce our Employee of the Year. This honor is bestowed upon one employee as nominated by their peers. This year, Officer John Carty was selected as our Employee of the Year. John has been with the agency for eight years, and serves as a firearms instructor and field training officer. John is very deserving of this recognition.

• December 20th- Eastman Credit Union provided lunch for the agency to show their appreciation for law enforcement.

the ER with ECO patients or in transport of TDO patients. This came at a direct, unsubsidized, cost to the tax payers of $1,645.94 for the month. This equates to $182.88 per mental health event during the month of December.

School Resource Officers Report - October

During the month of December Officers Heath and Hay had incidents that involved counseling of students for situations that were not criminal in nature but potentially could evolve to contain criminal elements. The Resource officers are able to provide proactive steps in an effort to prevent that from happening. Some of these incidents are listed below. On 12/7 Officer Heath was able to help resolve a lost cell phone report by a student in November. Information obtained by SRO Heath revealed that another student had been bragging about selling the phone on ebay. SRO Heath was able to find the listing for the cell phone and determine that it was the same phone that had been reported lost. He found that the phone had already been sold for parts through ebay. Upon speaking to the suspect and his parents about the phone the student admitted he had taken the phone. The Victim’s parent advised they did not wish to pursue charges but wanted to recover the cost of the phone. On 12/9, SRO Heath assisted a student whose family was unable to provide Christmas gifts by taking Christmas gifts donated to the school, to that student’s residence, located in the town. The family has no means of transportation. Fire Drills/Lockdown Drills/Tornado Drill:

Calls for Service:

For the month of December the department responded to 341 calls for service. We were able to close all but 21 of those calls. This gave us an overall clearance rate of 94.0 percent for the month. The department responded to 34 IBR reportable cases in the month of December; at the conclusion of the month, 15 remained active. This resulted in a clearance rate of 56.0 percent for all IBR offenses during the month of December.

Traffic Enforcement News:

The department conducted DMV overtime enforcement on two dates during the month of December. One officer worked an additional 11 hours of overtime on two different dates. This resulted in twelve (12) traffic stops, which resulted in six (6) summons and six (6) warnings. All six citations were for speed violations. This came at a cost of $276.10, which is reimbursed through the grant.
