From staff reports

County maintains fl ood rating scoreOkaloosa County

will save 25 percent on citizens fl ood insurance rates, according to the county.

FEMA uses the Insurance Services Offi ce, a private risk assessment fi rm, to review local fl oodplain management programs’ effectiveness under the National Flood Insurance Program.

The program’s ratings system ranges from classes 1-10, with 1 providing the greatest insurance reduction rates, 45 percent, and 10 providing no reduction.

Okaloosa’s 5 score results in a 25 percent premium reduction, according to FEMA.

“The CRS rating is a result of hard-working employees in our Growth Management Department, Public Safety and Public Works efforts each year,” County Commission Chairman Don Amunds said.

The rating is valid

October through September 2014, according to the county.

County mulling options for spending

requestsFORT WALTON BEACH —

Okaloosa County’s latest 2013-14 budget fi gures show spending requests at least $5.6 million over projected revenues.

The largest chunk is $1.7 million Sheriff Larry Ashley requested to fi ll vacancies created when he placed deputies in every public school in the district.

Other items include $1.2 million for county vehicle and equipment replacement, $1.4 million for a 3 percent salary increase for county employees, $675,000 in capital construction costs and $678,000 in Florida Retirement System contributions.

County commissioners, in an ongoing discussion, have mulled whether a municipal service taxing unit or utility franchise fees could help solve the problem.

CRESTVIEW — Following a weekend 5K fundraiser, Guardian Ad Litem has an additional $1,200 for ensur-ing north Okaloosa County children have the best representation, organizers said.

Proceeds from the “My Forever Home 5K Run/Walk,” held Saturday at Old Spanish Trail Park, will benefi t children court-or-dered removed from their homes.

“All the funds we raised go towards the Happy Kids Fund,” said Carita Smith, the Crestview offi ce’s vol-unteer coordinator. The fund helps needy foster par-ents pay for children’s den-tal braces or hearing aids, among other expenses.

Smith said she plans to

make the 5K run and walk an annual event.

If that happens, a num-ber of Saturday’s partici-pants might add it to their regular rotation of races.

Crestview resident Ste-ven Rausch, who fi nished fi rst in the race, said he par-ticipates in local 5K events to maintain a healthy weight. The 47-year-old is preparing for his third ap-pearance at the New York Marathon, scheduled for November.

“(The race) was more to test myself than compete against people,” he said.

Rausch said he would be interested in volunteering for Guardian Ad Litem af-ter his son graduates from college.

The 5K was a chance for Milton resident Karla Mac-Gregor, who fi nished sec-ond over all, to learn more about the nonprofi t.

“I read a little bit about it before the race, but I def-initely learned more about

it with the skit,” she said. Before the race, event

organizers held a skit ex-plaining the 5K’s name.

“The skit we performed ... was to let people know that these kids go from home to home,” Smith said. “They want a forever home.”

Some volunteers regis-tered participants before the run and handed out event T-shirts; others, in-cluding Niceville resident Alyssa Kittell, managed an infl atable bounce house for children to play in.

Kittell, who recently joined the nonprofi t, giving courtesy calls to children, said she is a fi rm believer in the program.

“If you have to volun-teer, then this is the best way to do it,” she said. “What’s better than help-ing some kids get stability in their life?”

A tempest in a teapot has been brewing since readers learned that Okaloosa County Schools allowed principal applicants beyond county limits for the 2013-14 school year.

Still, one Okaloosan slipped in among the north county schools’ new leaders.

Northwood Elementary’s new prinicipal, Donna Goode, comes from Huntsville, Ala.; Riverside Elementary’s Tammy Matz, from Mishawaka, Ind.; and Shoal River Middle’s Cheree Davis leaves Edwins Elementary in Fort Walton Beach for Crestview, her hometown.

Each principal is experienced and tested.

A banner achievement in Goode’s 25-year teaching career and 14 years in administration is bringing Owens Cross Roads Elementary School from a D to an A in one year, according to Okaloosa Schools Superintendent Mary Beth Jackson.

Matz brings 12 years’ administration experience, and she’s already prepared for Common Core State Standards, the county’s new curriculum that will replace the FCAT in 2014.

Davis, who hadn’t been a principal

before the 2011-12 school year, has led Edwins to new heights, spearheading a facility renovation project and breakfast program that lifted student morale and boosted kids’ health. Such changes to one of Okaloosa’s oldest schools prompted

many parents’ attention. Northwood, Riverside and

Shoal River have capable leaders, but a number of readers have criticized the district after learning that a committee allowed candidates outside the district due to a purportedly shallow applicant pool.

We have received phone calls, Facebook messages and postings

on our website — many with harsh words for the superintendent, questioning anyone suggesting Okaloosa’s teachers are less than suitable for administrative positions.

Teachers instruct and motivate students, instill life lessons and ultimately change lives. We recently received a phone call about a teacher whose actions, compassion and generosity surpass her position’s base requirements. And there are others like her, the caller said.

We know. Saturday’s edition concluded a 12-part series on north Okaloosa’s Teachers of the Year.

No one, including the school district’s administrators, has discounted our teachers’ value.

It’s just that the job descriptions differ. Elementary, middle and high school

principal positions typically require a master’s degree, as opposed to a teacher’s bachelor’s degree.

And some traits that readers have told us qualify their favorite teachers for an administrative position don’t necessarily move the needle. Unusual generosity in time and money make a teacher memorable, but a principal’s primary duties include supervising staff, monitoring teacher and student performance and managing the school budget — which means making unemotional decisions that often include more nos than yeses.

Two different jobs require two different skill sets, and there’s nothing wrong with that, or with the school district committee’s search elsewhere for administrative positions — unless you believe that one job is more important than the other, which we don’t.

Dear editor,Sometimes I am amazed by

the sheer ignorance of some of the comments and letters you receive.

Your newspaper does an excellent job of explaining things happening in the Crestview area in simple, easy-to-understand articles. Do your letter writers just not read them all the way through? Did they sleep through civics class?

“Krystal, mall hold-ups part of a pattern” (June 1, Page A4) is typical of this ignorance.

Does the writer not understand that Austin has 820,000 people while our area has about 30,000?

Does he really expect that restaurant chains and chain stores will fl ock to an area less than 4 percent the size of the city he visited?

If he wants the services of a big city, he needs to move to a big city.

In one of the many new phone books dumped at the end of my driveway this month, not counting fast food places like McDonald’s and KFC, I counted more than 40 places at which to sit down and have a great meal without having to cross Shoal River.

While we’re at it, what is this bizarre demand for chain restaurants?

Who wants boring old frozen lobsters when places like Earl’s, Wayne’s, the Fish Net and Country Chicken and Fish serve local seafood fresh?

Have those chronic complainers even bothered to try a sensational meal at the Wild Olive, Mia’s or Christopher’s Uncorked Bistro? Are their tastes so limited they need an out-of-town company cook to create the only food they’ll eat?

Do they really think eating in a junk shop atmosphere

with bargain decorations from Goodwill littering the walls is the epitome of fi ne dining?

The writer said “impact fees and the tax rate” keep away the chains he craves.

Didn’t he read in those same pages that our city council has repealed impact fees to the tune of more than $1 million for the mall planned by Lowe’s?

He and fellow commenters love to toss the word “corruption” around when things don’t go his way. Could he at least go by the library to look up the actual meaning of the word in a dictionary?

I have not read of any offi cial allegations of corruption in your newspaper.

If the writer understood how city government worked, he would know there is already a management plan for Crestview called the comprehensive plan, which was recently updated.

But I guess your writer doesn’t understand that Highway 85 is a state road, not a city road, and city government cannot do anything to widen it, pave it, time the stop lights better or build a bypass on a state or county road.

One thing I do know is that people like your reader love complaining, but hate supporting their city — even just to learn how it works.

I have been here just more than 10 years, and after years of living in a city with all the malls and chain restaurants your writer desires, I would rather be nowhere else.

This is the warmest, friendliest place I’ve ever lived, even if the mayor and city council won’t put on their hardhats to go build an Olive Garden — after they have dug new lanes for Highway 85, of course.

Bored with city’s dining, shopping options

Dear editor,Being a lifelong resident of

Crestview, I can honestly say I am sick and tired of having to drive to Destin, Fort Walton, Pensacola, Panama City — anywhere but Crestview — to dine out or play with my family.

The best thing Crestview has to offer is Wal-Mart.

I love Wal-Mart, but I am bored with our dining and shopping options.

We need more jobs. Open the door and make it a little easier for businesses to come here. I know I am not alone. I want a Krystal and a Target.

Anything other than another Dollar Store, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, etc.

Seniors Alex Andrews and

Ryan Vance love life on the stage

By BRIAN HUGHES Arts and Entertainment Editor

[email protected]

CRESTVIEW — If you put graduating seniors Alex Andrews and Ryan Vance on a stage and hit the spotlight, a performance is bound to happen.

It might be a song. It could be a play. Whatever the case, it’ll be

fun. However, both teenagers

said without their supportive families and Crestview High School’s performing arts teachers’ nurturing infl uence, it wouldn’t have happened at all.

Ryan, whom peers sometimes call “the theater kid,” has appeared in multiple plays and musicals while at CHS.

Alex, who has performed in plays and led the Crestview High chorus’ bass section this year, has sung in school choruses since middle school.

“I wanted to go into something, and I thought I’d try the band, but the only opening they had was for a tuba player,” Alex said.

Before they discovered life in the spotlight, the teens played sports. Ryan was a varsity football player for the Bulldogs.

“But I gave it up for acting,” he said.

On the stageWhile Alex appeared in

the 130-voice chorus winter and spring concerts, Ryan was on stage in the fall play

and spring musicals.Between performances,

the students would compete in district and state choral or Thespian competitions.

“I think the coolest thing about the performing arts is it’s so open to anybody,” Ryan said. “It’s not cliquish. It’s a big melting pot.”

When Chanticleer, the elite mixed chorus ensemble, takes to the stage in the fall, Alex said watching them perform will be a different experience for him.

“It’s going to be strange just sitting in the auditorium and not being up on the risers,” he said.

“It’s tough not being up there on stage, isn’t it?” Ryan

said. “It’s really weird sitting out there in the audience.”

College plansRyan plans to head to

Troy University this fall. He auditioned for the theater department’s upcoming season a couple weeks ago.

“They have an amazing program,” he said. “I can’t wait to get up there and continue to the next level. If I get cast, even in one show, I’ll be happy.”

Alex’s plans include Northwest Florida State College for two years, during which he will focus on singing in the choir at Live Oak Baptist Church,

his church home, and conducting its children’s choir.

He credits Crestview High choral music director Kevin Lusk for teaching him how to sight-read music and for inspiring a potential career.

“I would like to major in choral music education and take Mr. Lusk’s place when he retires,” Alex said. “Anytime anything ever happened, even if it wasn’t chorus-related, I could come talk to him.”

Ryan also praised his teachers — including present and past drama instructors Annette Gebhardt and Allison Wilkes, respectively — who helped hone his theatrical arts skills.

“They’re incredible,” he said. “They’ve been behind me in everything I do.”

Giving adviceThe duo encourage

underclassmen, especially incoming freshmen, to get involved with Crestview High’s performing arts programs.

“Chase your dreams,” Ryan said. “If you don’t get the role you want, keep your head up and keep working. The arts kind of shape who you are.”

Perseverance is crucial, Alex said.

“Never give up,” he said. “It took me three tries before I got into Chanticleer. If it hadn’t been for theater and chorus, I wouldn’t be as outgoing as I am now. The performing arts build your self-confi dence.”

Ryan was optimistic about fi ne arts’ future here.

“The arts are not dead in Crestview, especially at Crestview High School,” he said. “If I could leave anything as our legacy, it’s that.”

Don’t blame pests for dry lawn

When we have a dry period in spring or summer, I get predictable calls about some mysterious pest wreaking havoc on lawns.

However, the dry spots callers describe actually result from an irrigation system’s imperfections, revealed after inadequate rain. During suffi cient rainfall, rain masks the irrigation system’s imperfections.

The cause for dry spots might be as simple as a maladjusted spray head, a broken spray head, a plugged nozzle,

a tree trunk or tall shrub blocking the water, or grass that has grown over a pop-up spray head.

There might be too few sprinkler heads for adequate coverage, insuffi cient pressure to operate each zone, an incorrect choice of nozzles or wrongly mixing rotors with spray heads on the same zone.

The homeowner can easily fi x some problems, but others require a licensed irrigation contractor’s expertise.

These tests can help confi rm whether problem areas result from lack of water versus some mysterious pest.

● Take a soil sample in the root zone. Remove a slice of soil 6-8 inches deep with a shovel. Feel the sample for moisture. Do the same in an adjacent area of the lawn that looks normal, and compare the difference. It should be obvious if there’s a difference in moisture between tested areas.

● Place several empty straight-sided cans, such as tuna cans, in the affected area and several in a normal area of the lawn. Turn on the irrigation system and let it run long enough to collect water in the cans. Compare the water amounts collected in the two areas.

● Occasionally, run your irrigation system and check for obvious maladjusted or broken spray heads.

If these tests do not identify the problem as lack of water, you might have a lawn pest.

But don’t guess. If you’re unsure about the diagnosis,

contact a reputable lawn care or pest control business or your local University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension Offi ce.

CRESTVIEW — To the 10,600 books in Walker Elementary School’s library, add 19 from authors in the school’s fourth- and fi fth-grade Writers Club.

“Some of them are really quite as-tonishing,” club adviser Liz Bears said of the books. Student authors selected their topics and mastered narrative development and writing in chapters, she said.

The club encourages students to read more and develop their research, interpersonal and communication skills, Bears said.

“We get to actually write our own stories and express how we want to tell our stories,” student Reann Cato said.

“Writing a book makes me feel like I’m at home because I can be myself and write what I want to say,” Natalia Deleon said.

“When you’re writing, you can make up everything,” Colbea Raybon said.

“Yeah, you get to express yourself and be creative,” her friend Kattara Austin added.

Reading and sharingThe Writers Club wrapped up its

semester with an Authors Celebration on May 30 in the school library.

Some students produced alphabet

books to share with younger Owls.“I get to teach little kids about

words they should know,” Kaitlyn Birkelo said, adding the letter “V” was her favorite.

“‘V’ stands for vacuum, vacation and van,” she read.

“My favorite letter is ‘V,’ too!” her friend Katrina Scott said. “A lot of cool things begin with V.”

Jackson Harrison was keen to

share a verse he had written while his English class learned about limericks.

“There once was a girl named Jill/ Who ate a big, fat pill/ The pill blew up/ And Jill went ‘whup!’/ And that was the end of Jill.”

Bears said she plans to offer the Writers Club for the 2013-14 school year and might expand it to a year-long club. Currently, it meets in the spring semester.

CRESTVIEW — The Antioch Aviators rallied this year to raise more than $4,000 for Children in Crisis.

Antioch Elementary students contributed “Change for Children” in their classrooms during a grade-level competition. Principal Wanda Avery allowed teachers to pay to wear jeans four weeks during the school year.

“Jax Murphy, a fi rst-grade Aviator, took the initiative to contact friends and family around the country,” raising almost $200 himself, Antioch remediation teacher

Alice Thomas stated in a news release.

Faculty and staff members raffl ed gift baskets during the Christmas season.

“It truly was a school-wide effort to raise money for children in our community,” Thomas stated.

Children in Crisis constructed the Children’s Neighborhood, which includes an emergency shelter for children removed without notice from an unsafe environment, family foster homes for young children and two teen transition homes for foster children aging out of care.

“I plan on spending more time with my grandchildren and traveling with my husband, Jerry,” she said.

Holloway said she would miss a ca-reer inspired by two educators in her family — her mother, Sarah Rodgers, and sister-in-law, Renee Rodgers — and praised the school’s current staff.

“As the years progressed, I have met and learned from the best,” she said in an email. “It’s been an awesome journey.

“The impact of seeing these dynam-ic teachers would change the minds of those who have negative opinions of our public education system.”

Houston said she will “miss the smil-ing faces of my students and their ea-gerness to learn.”

Dianne Jones, who has spent the last 26 years in the school district, agreed.

“When the lights come on for a stu-dent, it is wonderful to watch them

grow and move forward,” she said in an email.

Fifth-grade teacher and former Northwood student Ashlee Van Dyke said Barton’s and Diven’s classes left an impression.

She remembered “Diven’s dollars,” where students could earn and spend class currency in the classroom store.

She also recalled a memorable Moth-er’s Day tea party in Barton’s class.

“I was in the second grade, and my mother got the time wrong ... I was heartbroken,” Van Dyke said.

When her mother arrived an hour late, other classmates had gone to lunch. However, Barton allowed the pair to have their own tea party.

“She took her own planning time for me and my mom,” Van Dyke said. “To know that you are cared about and loved — that’s the kind of teacher I want to be.”

RICHBOURG from page A1Okaloosa County

School District Superin-tendent Mary Beth Jack-son praised Josh, 22, for embodying the spirit of the Richbourg Lions, likening the school’s students and educators to a lion pride,

or family.“Continue to be a fam-

ily,” she said. “Continue to love one another. That’s the most important thing you can do.”

Josh’s father, James Rancourt, said he and his

wife, Merlita, have yet to finalize post-graduation plans for their son.

This was the excep-tional student education school’s third graduation ceremony, principal Barry Blackburn said.

CRESTVIEW — The Gar-den City Little League Park will be abuzz with the sound of tournament soft-ball this weekend, as the Crestview Little League hosts the fi rst of three summer tournaments.

“June 8 we’ve got a spe-cial games tournament for the girls machine pitch 7-8 softball, which last about

four days,” league president Mel-vin “Catfi sh” Hill said. “And then June 22-25 we’ve got the 9- and 10-(year-olds) that actually start the district tour-nament. And in July we host the sectional.

“June 22 is when they start making it to the (Lit-tle League) World Series.”

Saturday’s games

are scheduled for 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Games starting Monday will begin at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. in the double elimi-nation tournament.

Admission is free for all Little League tournaments.

Hill expects that teams at this week’s tour-nament — from Shalimar, DeFuniak Springs, Destin, Niceville and, possibly,

Panama City — will con-clude with a championship game June 13.

In addition, the 7- to 8-year-olds’ machine pitch baseball team will compete in a DeFuniak Springs tour-nament starting Saturday.

Hill — who expects more than 100 players at each tournament — said Garden City will host the sectional tournament in July even if the local league doesn’t win the district tournament later

this month.Hill also said the league

will play fall ball. The fall league will run from Aug. 24 to Oct. 25. Play-ers’ registration is open and will continue through mid-July.

Contact Hill, 902-6237 or 4ballcatfi [email protected], for more information on the fall league.

CRESTVIEW — Roman Donofro outdueled Choc-tawhatchee’s Bryan Baker and Niceville’s Nick Jung-er. He went 2-0 against archrival Niceville. He shined in postseason baseball’s bright spotlight, tossing 16 scoreless in-nings at one point and al-lowing just one earned run over 21 innings.

Through every fall-of-the-table curveball and deceptively fast fastball, Donofro embodied every telltale sign of an ace.

The right-hander pitched an area-high 79 in-

nings, yielding just 16 earned runs for a 1.42 earned run average. Further delving into the numbers, Donofro had 96 strikeouts (8.5 per seven innings), held opponents to a .253 average and went 8-4.

Capping off a late-in-the-season 10-game win-ning streak, Donofro daz-zled against Marianna. The 5-foot-7-inch, 160-pound senior struck out eight Bulldogs and walked four for his fi rst no-hitter.

Pitted against second-seeded Niceville in the win-or-go-home setting of

the District 2-6A semifi nals, Dono-fro struck out 11 and allowed just fi ve hits in a 6-0 shutout win.

The win not only punched the Bulldogs’ post-season ticket, it gave them a 3-0 mark against their

state-ranked archrival. The transformative win was part of a postseason stretch in which Donofro recorded 16 consecutive scoreless ones, further ce-menting his ace status.

And, essentially, it ce-mented his Northwest Florida Daily News Big School Pitcher of the

Year award.“It feels pretty great,”

said Donofro, who had just assumed the award would be handed to Baker.

For Crestview coach Tim Gillis it was a one-man race.

“I think he’s a no-brain-er,” Gillis said of the selec-tion. “I say that with a bias because he’s my guy, but he also had the best sea-son of anyone. In all the big games he pitched for us.”

Donofro was joined on the All-Area fi rst team by Bulldog teammates Da-kota Dean, Seth Thoma-son, Tyler Henderson, Austin Armstrong and Tate Sweatt. Davis Cham-

pion and Justin Rebholz were named to the second team. Gillis was named the Coach of the Year.

Several local play-ers also made the Small School All-Area team.

Baker School’s Alan Weidenhammer and Adam Crowson were named to the fi rst team, as was Lau-rel Hill School’s Boomer Simmons. Ben Crowson and Garrett Sanders rep-resented Baker on the sec-ond team. Logan Nixon, Jake Rainey, Austin Davis and Kyle Davis received honorable mention.

Laurel Hill’s Tyler Gre-zlik was second team and Max Smith was honorable mention.

ROMAN DONOFRO

The 2012-13 school year ends tomorrow and the summer of 2013 is offi cially upon us. Students return to class Aug. 19 for the start of the 2013-14 school year.

That gives students just more than 10 weeks to soak up some sun, hit the beach, earn a few dollars and, for athletes, prepare for next

year.It seems

as if sports have become a year-round thing even for high school students. Maybe saying

year-round is a stretch, but it’s not far off the mark at the big schools and some smaller schools.

Most local baseball teams have a summer program that go through June. Basketball teams will head to camps and play in local summer leagues, as will volleyball teams.

Baker School football starts its off-season program next week. The Crestview High School football team hits the fi eld for the fi rst time in the summer on June 17. The teams will pretty much go until the end of the summer, with a week or 10 days off for the Fourth of July.

Football teams that don’t work out in June and July will likely fi nd themselves behind the pack in September and October.

The summer is always important for new coaches like Crestview High School’s Tim Hatten. There’s only a certain amount of offensive and defensive packages a team can learn in the three weeks of spring drills.

Hatten will take a sensible approach to the summer drills. He said the team will work out about two-and-a-half hours each morning. He also hopes to participate in seven-on-seven games one evening each week.

That should leave plenty of time for players to enjoy the summer while getting in the necessary work to prepare for the season.

Baker coach Matt Brunson also takes a common sense approach to the summer. He works the Gators two or three hours each day three times a week.

I still sometimes wonder what happened to the good old summer time when high school athletes had a few weeks to just be kids and kick back and relax before fall practice starts in August.

That said, I know that without some sort of structured summer program, many kids wouldn’t do the work that will make them better in the fall.

Although we didn’t have mandatory lifting when I was in high school, I still made it a point to be at the school at least three times a week to get my work in the summer between junior and senior years. Lifting weights was about all we could do, as there were no team drills organized by the coaches.

It didn’t help me much on the football fi eld that fall, but I had a chance to bond with the few teammates who were also working out. And I did get stronger.

Now, everybody is lifting, running and practicing all summer long. Yes, young athletes in Okaloosa County will still fi nd time to make it to the beach or hit one of the local rivers

Summer drills now the norm

Editor’s Note: With the end of spring football practice, focus turns to the fall, but how does fi rst-year Crestview High School coach Tim Hatten assess his team?

Today, in the fi rst of a two-part series, we will focus on Crestview’s offense. We will break down the defense in Saturday’s edition.

Next week, Baker School coach Matt Brunson will break down the Gators.

CRESTVIEW — It was a fast and furious May for Crestview High School’s football team under new head coach Tim Hatten’s direction.

Hatten ditched former coach Kevin Pettis’ power running game and installed a spread offense.

“I thought we had a really good

productive spring and it’s a good way to lead into summer workouts,” Hatten said. “You always want to leave spring feeling like you progressed from day one. And we have progressed light years from day one.

“Any time you play a game and you have fans in the stadium, you like to score more points than the other team, but if you are going to be on the wrong side (of the fi nal score) it needs to be in a jamboree or Kickoff Classic.”

Hatten said the spring jamboree against Escambia High School and Navarre was a learning tool.

“That was our

for a leisurely day of tubing or canoeing. And kids in other parts of the state and country will fi nd the nearest

body of water to cool off and relax with their friends.

Football and the other sports are still games at

the high school level. But they are a little more like businesses than they were in days gone by.

I’m glad our local coaches understand that kids need a break from the game and time to simply

enjoy being young on a nice summer day.

BULLDOGS from page B1fi rst time against high school defenses in this area to see what they are running and the adjustments that they will make,” he said. “You’ve got to learn a lot as coaches and players. You have to look at the way they try to defend different formations.”

Hatten said most of the Bulldog completions in the jamboree came on short passes, and he hopes to throw it downfi eld more in the fall.

Here’s a breakdown of the offensive positions and some of the players expected to man the positions.

QuarterbackKhalil Foster — who

emerged from spring practice as the fi rst string quarterback — is the guy to beat heading into the fall.

“He did a good job for us,” Hatten said. “You fi gure you’ve got a kid that has never started for you at quarterback and the fi rst game he went 28-for-37 for 300 yards, no picks (interceptions), no turnovers and that’s a plus.

“There’s a lot of fundamental improvement to be made. He’s a great athlete and a good receiver. He’s probably going be offered at receiver (to play college ball), but he’s got to play quarterback for us.”

Foster handled the pressure well in his fi rst game as the starting quarterback, and should only improve with more experience, Hatten said.

Foster is joined at quarterback by Troy Smith and Corey Armstrong. Armstrong missed spring practice with what Hatten described as a slight knee problem, but he’ll have a chance to battle for the starting job in the fall.

“He’s going to come in at quarterback and he’s going to compete,” Hatten said. “He’s going to play other positions on offense too.

“I think Corey is going to come in there and provide us with an adequate backup. I can’t say that he’s not going to come in there and beat him (Foster) out. He may beat him out, but Khalil Foster will be on the fi eld somewhere.”

Alex Maxwell will probably be the junior varsity quarterback.

Running backEmmanuel Reed and

Jaylynne Robinson are the top two running backs, but there are plenty of good players to help out at the position, Hatten said.

“We have to get the

ball in Emmanuel’s hands by whatever means necessary,” Hatten said. “I think that’s (nine catches in the jamboree) the most balls he has caught in a game by any means.

“Jaylynne, he’s a project, in terms of never playing offense before, but he still had a great night on the offensive side of the ball. Jaylynne’s problem is it took him about a half to buy into, ‘This is the way we are going to do things.’ He fi gured that out in the second half.”

Darian McGee, Cyrus Daniels, Malique Studevan and Demtrius Smith are the other running backs.

“We’ve got about six guys that can carry the ball; of the six guys, two of them will be seniors: Jaylynne and Demetrius,” Hatten said. “All of them are good players.

“Emmauel’s just going to be a junior and Stud (Studevan) is just going to be a sophomore. They are a really good bunch.”

Offensive line“I thought they did a

good job,” Hatten said. “They are still learning just like the rest of us. We have to shore up some things in our pass protection, and that comes with repetitions.

“I thought we handled the blitz really well in the jamboree.”

About eight players will be in the mix along the front. He said Rocky Longman, Chance Owens, Spencer Singletary, Nathan Gerrod, Trevor Vaughn and Justin Abdo are among those players.

The offensive linemen’s average size is about 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, Hatten said.

“We are not big enough to be bulldozers, he said. “We are a zone blocking team, and that’s what we are going to be.”

Wide receiverPerhaps the spring’s

biggest surprise was the play of Ronnie Baylark.

Baylark, a three-year starter on the Crestview basketball team, turned heads with his play-making ability at receiver and impressed Hatten with his toughness and willingness to work.

“Ronnie Baylark will be a great wide receiver,” Hatten said. “Ronnie, of all people, is going to hang out with you and he’s not going to think about quitting. Ronnie hasn’t missed a practice.

“He doesn’t know a lot about the position of wide receiver, but he does know how to use his body like in basketball. Once

the ball is in the air all it’s time for him to be is an athlete. That part of it is basketball because when the ball goes up, those guys (basketball players) know how to use their bodies to get to the ball.”

Other receivers are Matt Gillis, Jamal Coleman, Devin Siler, Studevan and Daniels. Hatten said all of the

running backs will line up in the backfield as some sort of slot receiver so Robinson, Reed and the other running backs also can be considered receivers depending on the formation.

Gillis is the kind of player who is often overlooked, Hatten said.

“Matt Gillis is a solid little kid, a solid little player,” he said. “He’s

going to block and he’s going to be where he’s supposed to be. There’s nothing more important for a quarterback than being where you are supposed to be.

“Most quarterbacks find comfort with guys like that.”

Tight endHatten’s spread

offense probably won’t use the tight end a lot, but when it does, Lucas Lee will be the go-to guy.

“We got to use him a little more effectively and run behind him,” Hatten said. “With him, you should just get the linebacker to come up on the play action, pass and get the ball to him because of his size (6-foot-7).”

The Crestview restaurant distributed 20 percent of Friday’s sales to the Special Forces Association Chapter 7, a group that assists the Army 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne)’s soldiers and families. Members helped the restaurant’s staff deliver sandwiches to customers and clean tables.

One of the organization’s main goals is to take care of their own,

Special Forces Association Chapter 7 president Steve Tuttle said.

“In January, we had a soldier’s house (in Crestview) burn down,” he said. “Within 24 hours, we had a $1,000 check to him.” The check helped the single father cover expenses before insurance kicked in.

The association also assisted with funeral arrangements for a 7th soldier who died in a motorcycle incident, he said.

Among its regular causes is the Wounded Warriors Project and funding scholarships for children within the group.

Additionally, the organization is raising funds for a memorial wall honoring 7th Special Forces Group members on the new military installation south of Crestview.

“They do all sorts of good stuff with that money to support troops and their families,” restaurant owner Andrew Sheriff said. “I defi nitely want to do as much as I can for the (military personnel) around me.”

CRESTVIEW — Riverside Elementary School has $2,500 extra to support its creative programs after May 28’s second annual “Soaring with Art” silent auction.

Among auctioned items were students’ original art-work, local artists’ contri-butions and businesses’ gift certifi cates and donations.

Abstract paintings, a patriotic wreath from third-grade teacher Laura King and painted umbrel-las made by Debbie Shipp’s fi rst-grade class were some of the selections.

The Shoal River Jazz Band, Riverside Strings and student solos served entertainment for attend-ees who helped support fi ne arts education.

“We are trying to build an

art program in our school because we don’t have one,” said event organizer and Title 1 instructor Bridget LaRue. “We need supplies every year because with 950 students we have in this school ... supplies go very fast.”

Many parents attend-ing said they supported the school’s cultural curricula.

“Creativity is so impor-tant ... art defi nitely pro-motes that,” said Kelli Bur-gess, who attended with her 10-year-old son, Kevin. “I am all for people being cre-ative; I think it’s great they do this here.”

Mike Roberts agreed.

“It would be nice if ev-erybody had a stronger em-phasis on the artistic side,” he said.

“I think it helps, in a complementary way, devel-op other natural things we can think about like math and science.”

Ashley Roberts, Mike’s 9-year-old daughter, said she “felt really cool” upon learn-ing her abstract rendition of palm trees would appear on the event poster.

“She spends a lot of her time drawing, fi nding things to draw and a lot of time with music,” Mike said. “We’re very proud of her for winning.”
