FEEDING THE WORLD With today’s two ac-counts of feeding miracles and the psalm response about the Lord’s hand feeding us, it is easy to gloss over the mar-velous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most po-tent biblical numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word “one” ex-pressed seven times. Three

of these describe the church: one body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect of duplicating the wonders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more realistic way to live and “feed” others as the church: by living in humility and gentleness, by acting with patience, bearing with each other in love, and always seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we “feed” the church and the world by living this way? We are always called upon to “feed” the world in the literal sense; but our mission as church tells us that others are also fed by the way we live and act each mo-ment of each day. Copyright © J. S. Es verdad que siempre estamos llamados a “alimentar” al mundo en el sentido literal de la palabra, pero nuestra misión como Iglesia también nos dice que a los demás también hay que alimentarlos por la manera en que vivimos y actuamos cada momento de cada día. History of The Knights of Peter Claver and the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary The Knights of Peter Claver, Inc.

The Knights of Peter Claver and the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary The Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. is named after St. Peter Claver, a Jesuit priest from Spain who ministered to African slaves in Cartagena, Colombia, South America, in the 17th century. Peter Claver is said to have converted over 300,000 slaves to Ca-tholicism. In 1922, a Ladies Auxiliary was formed to provide the same opportunities for Catholic Action to African American lay women. The Auxiliary was officially

recognized as a division of the Order in 1926. The Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. organization is the largest and oldest-continually extant predominantly African-American lay Catholic organization. The Knights of Peter Claver, Council 389 and The Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Court 389 were chartered and established in Altadena, California at Sacred Heart Parish in March 21, 2009. The organization is composed of three Parishes. The Parishes are Sacred Heart in Altadena, St. Elizabeth of Hun-gary in Altadena and St. Andrew's in Pasadena. The Council 389 and Court 389 chose their official name by honoring and using the name of Bishop Carl Anthony Fisher. Since the organization has so many courts and councils number 389 is used to distin-guish to tell which court and council the parishes are part of. The organization is the largest and oldest predominantly African-American lay Catholic organization. Council 389 and Court 389 are part of the Western States District in the Altadena and Pasa-dena, California area. The purpose of organization is to serve the Roman Catholic Church and the community. Note: The Ladies Auxiliary of The Knights of Peter Claver Bishop Carl Anthony Fisher Court #389 will be in attendance at the 10:15 a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 9, 2015 and will be available to answer any questions about the organization after the Mass.

Helping children problem solve through communication

Often the easiest response to complicated conversa-

tions is a generic one, but these moments can be opportuni-

ties to help children grow. For example, if a child comes to

you and tells you that a friend is being left out of social

activities, you might respond with a question: “Do you think

there is anything you can do help him/her feel more in-

cluded?” Or if your child comes to you for money for social

activities, instead of offering a solution, you might prompt

them to consider ways that they could earn money or fund-

raise on their own. In this way, you are not only helping a

child find a solution to an immediate situation, but also help-

ing them to grow in wisdom and prudence. For complete

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Sooner of later, as they plan their wedding liturgy,

a couple will receive some advice about a “unity can-

dle.” They need one, they are told (at great expense);

it is a tradition; it is what Catholics have always done.

Not so. In the last thirty years or so, the custom has

enjoyed wide popularity in the United States. It has

never been officially part of our liturgy, and it exists

in tension with some of our core symbols. Usually

there are two smaller candles and one larger one to

be lit from the smaller. Large candles in our tradition

always mean Christ, and smaller ones are always to-

kens of our baptismal candle. If the candles are

meant for a kind of renewal of baptismal vows, then

the meaning is clearer, yet this is seldom the under-

standing. Why, then, are those smaller candles extin-

guished?

It’s hard to tell where these pesky candles came

from. Some suggest that the Presbyterian Church,

which has a very lean wedding liturgy, introduced

them as an option for extending a short service. Gen-

erally, it’s been experienced as a “photo opportunity”

rather than a genuine liturgical ritual. The “unity can-

dle,” a recent invention rather than an authentic tra-

dition, has not been approved as an adaptation to our

rite, and it is to be hoped that it will gradually disap-

El Ministerio de Duelo, invita a toda aquella

persona cuya vida ha sido devastada por la per-

dida de un ser querido, a nuestro Programa

de Recuperación que se da en ocho sesiones.

En el, los participantes adquirirán los conoci-

mientos y herramientas necesarias para tomar acciones

concretas y claras, que les permitirán sentirse mejor y en un

camino de sanación emocional, en poco tiempo vivir de nuevo

plenamente.

Iniciaremos un nuevo grupo el día 7 de Agosto 2015, las

reuniones se llevaran a cabo los Viernes de las 7:00 a 8:30

de la noche, en el “Large Room” de esta Parroquia, debido a

la naturaleza de el programa el cupo es limitado a un máxi-

mo de 10 personas que deseen asistir a todas y cada una de

las reuniones, por ello pedimos registrarse con anticipación.

El costo por cada sesión es de $5.00 Dólares. Si se pagan

personally was very impressed and grateful for the

beautiful liturgies. At every Mass it was evident that

the ministers, from celebrant to ushers, carried out

their parts so reverently. The music was so appropri-

D.C. He will became the first saint to be canonized on U.S. soil, and the first Hispanic saint in America. To learn more about Fr. 5. Father Junípero had a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. At age 36, he arrived in Veracruz and traveled by foot to Mexico City to dedicate his mission vocation at the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe; there he asked her for the grace to open the hearts of the coloniz-ers and indigenous peoples. The image of Our Lady of Gua-dalupe is venerated in most of the missions. Since then, Our Lady of Guadalupe has become the Patroness of the whole American continent. 5. Padre Junípero tenía una especial devoción a la Santísima Virgen María. A la edad de 36 años llegó a Vera Cruz y viajó a pie a la Ciudad de México para ofrecer su vocación misionera en el Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe; allí le pidió a la Virgen la gracia de que abriera los corazones de los colonizadores y de los pueblos indíge-nas. La imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe es venera-da en la mayoría de las misiones. En efecto, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe se ha convertido en la Patrona de todo el con-tinente americano. 6. In 1767 Father Junípero Serra was sent to Loreto, Baja California as the President of the Baja California Missions. Father Palou and Father Crespí were also as-signed to these missions. La Misión Nuestra Señora de Lo-reto Conchó is the first Jesuit mission founded in Baja Cali-fornia in 1697 and the beginning of the El Camino Real. For the move into Alta California, Serra was in the company of Gaspar de Portolá, the military Governor of California. 6. En 1767 el Padre Junípero Serra fue enviado a Lore-to, Baja California, como Presidente de las Misiones de Baja California. Los padres Palou y Crespí también fueron asignados a estas misiones. La Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó fue la primera misión fundada por los Jesui-tas en Baja California en 1697 y marcó el comienzo de El Camino Real. Para llegar a la Alta California, Serra se unió a la compañía de Gaspar de Portolá, el gobernador militar de California. (More next week..)

INTENTION / INTENCIONES

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Para los hispanos y las personas de otras culturas,

el recuerdo y vinculación con nuestros antepasados es

algo muy importante. De hecho, en las culturas lati-

noamericanas se usan los apellidos del padre y de la

madre para enfatizar de dónde y de quiénes provie-

nen. Muchas personas han conservado esta misma tra-

dición aquí en Estados Unidos. Este sentido de conec-

tarnos a nuestros antepasados también se encuentra

en la fe cristiana. Mediante la imposición de manos,

por citar un ejemplo, llegamos hasta los apóstoles.

Podríamos decir que los cuatro evangelios subrayan

esta vinculación con los orígenes de nuestra fe. La

forma en que lo hacen, aunque pequeña, es interesan-

te. Luego de que todos comieron de los panes y los

peces multiplicados por Jesús, recogieron doce canas-

tos llenos de pan. En cierta manera, los evangelistas

aseguran que el pan que Jesús dio al gentío de su

tiempo nos lo sigue dando hoy en la eucaristía. Ahora,

este pan es la carne de Jesús, quien se hace ofrenda y
