2. GENERAL _9ESCRIPTION

Four models of the machine are manufactured for the impacttesting of metals in accordance with B.S. 131. In the 6705series of manually operated machines, three versions areavailable, but only one version of the 6706 pneumaticallyoperated machine. These are as follows:-

1 6706 Charpy-Izod Combined - Pneumatic Machine

6705/U2 Charpy-Izod Combined - Manual

3) 6705/1 I~od only Manual

4) 6705/C Charpyonly Manual

In addition, the first three models are also capable ofcarrying out the Impact Tension test as an optional extrafacility.

The capacity of the models is 0 to 150 J for the Izod andImpact ~ension tests, but two capacities of 0 to 150 J and 0to 300 J are available for Charpy tests, the 0 to 150 Jbeing an optional extra. The Impact values are read on thescale on the front of the machine, and are indicated by aslave pointert which is manually returned to the startingposition after each test.

Manually operated machines differ from pneumaticallyoperated machines only in the method of lifting and securingof the pendulum and its eventual release. Otherwise thetesting procedure is exactly the same.

On pneumatically operated machines, two levers operatingrotary switch valves are located above the scale. One leverselects three positions; lifting of the pendulum under powerto either the Charpy or the Izod start position, and 'Test'.The second lever selects either automatic or manual release.

On manually operated machines the pendulum is liftedphysically to the start position. A pendulum release leverand a safety lock lever, which prevents accidentalrelease, are fitted to the release box.

Wedge clamps held down by socket head screws, are providedfor holding the test piece support blocks rigid.

A stop is fitted on the base to support the" tup whencarrying out adjustments or tool changeovers. The stopautomatically drops clear when the tup is raised.

It must be stressed that the swinging pendulum and theprojected parts of the test piece are potentially dangerous. The operator of the machine should therefore ensure thatboth he/she and any observers are clear of the area of s~ingof the pendulum when a test is conducted.

Note. that depending on the type of material being tested, the broken specimen parts may eject in any direction, theoperator should therefore be provided with suitableprotection.

s.3. INSTALLATION

The machine must be rigidly fi1ed on a solid foundation.

The total volume of the concrete raft and plinth shown onthe Foundation Drawing layout (75F383), whilst lifting themachine to a comfortable operatinq heiqht, adequatelycomplies with the requirements of B.S. 131.

Eyebolts are provided in the top of the pillar for liftingthe machine.

The machine base has 4-24 rom dia. holes provided to allowfor 3/4" dia. foundation bolts to be used.

Level tbe machine on the plinth by placing a straight edgeand/or spirit level across the two machined reference padson the base 'X' axis. Similarly, level across the base jawsfor the 'Y' axis. To check, when banging free the pendulumshould hang so that the striking edge is within 2.5 rom ofthe position where it would just touch the test piece.

Grout the base to a depth of about 15 rom and, after thegrouting has set, ensure that the foundation bolt nuts are

tight.

6.4. OPERATING CONTROLS

4.1 Release Boxes

On Charpy-Izod Combined (670S/U & 6706) and on Charpyonly (670S/C) machines, the release box for the Charpytest is dowelled in position and remains on themachine permanently.

On Charpy/Izod Combined machines, the release box forthe Izod test is a separate assembly which is fittedbefore the Izod test, and removed before Charpytesting.

On I~od only (6705/1 machines) the release box remainson the machine.

On the pneumatially operated machines a quick releaseair connector is pro~ided for the changeover to theappropriate release box.

4.2

4.2.1 Manually oper~ted 6705 Machines

The two levers for operatinq the pendulum release aresituated at the top of the machine.

The pendulum is raised by hand to the required 'start'position, where a spring loaded catch engages with ahook on the pendulum. Accidental release of thependulum is prevented by the action of an integralsafety lock which engages automatically.

1.

To release the pendulum for test, the upper safetylock lever has to be lifted and held ~p before thelower pendulum release lever can be depressed. Thislower lever releases the pendulum.

4.2.2 P~~_~~ical1y operat~d 6706 Machines.

The control box, which is situated above the machinechart, has two operating levers. The right handlever has three positions, marked 'Charpy' 'Izod' and'Standby'. When 'Charpy' or 'Izod' positions areselected, the pendulum lifts under power to thecorrect starting position, ~here the release catchautomatically locks in. When the 'Standby' positionis selected, the pendulum is now ready to be released, but can only be released when the left hand lever isin the 'test' position.

The left hand lever has two positions marked 'test' and'hold'. The lever is spring loaded in the 'hold' position,so that the pendulum release catch will not operate. Torelease the pendulum catch, and allow the pendulum to fall, the lever must be depressed to the 'test' position. Thependulum will then fall immediately.

When the lever is released, it will return to the 'hold'position, and the pendulum catch will also reset.

On all machines, the release box catch is self resetting alis so designed that no disturbance of the pendulum takesplace when the catch is released. On manual machines, thesafety lock also automatically re-sets.

On pneumatic machines, 'Izod' or 'Charpy' may be selected atany time whilst the pendulum is swinging, when it will bearrested, and returned to the corresponding 'start'

position.

To Park the Pendulum

a) On manual machines, the pendulum may be caughtpreferably at the end of the swing, and returned to thebottom vertical position.

On pneumatic machines, 'Izod' may be selected during thependulum 8wing, when the pendulum will be arrested. Atthis point, before the pendulum i8 raised to 'start'position, the lever is moved to 'test' allowing thependulum to fall to the bottom ~ertical position.

2) Fit Izod Tup and Striker.

3 Rest tup on retractable base stop.

4) Fit Izod test grips. (See section 5).

5) Insert test piece with notch towards the righti.e. facing the striker. Set for correctheight with positioning gauge resting in thegroove on the grip block assembly and locatingin the test piece notch. Turn handwheel togrip the test piece firmly. Then remove gauge.

6) Turn chart knob fully clockwise to maximumvalue.

7) Ensure that the test area is safe to allpersonnel.

On Manual Machines

8) Lift pendulum to the 'start' position, ensuringthat the pendulum is securely held by therelease catch.

9) Before releasing pendulum, check that the basestop has fallen clear of the arc of pendulumswing-

10) Release pendulum by lifting the 'lock' leverand simultaneously depressing the pendulumrelease lever. This will allow the pendulum tofall immediately.

12) Catch the pendulum at the end of a swing and restit on the base stop.

13) Remove broken or deformed specimen.

On Pneumatic Machines

8) Select Izod on the right hand (or select) lever, which will cause the pendulum to rise to the'start' position, and latch in.

9 When the pendulum has latched in position, movethe select lever to 'standby'. This will preparethe pneumatic system ready for pendulum release.N.B. As the pneumatic lifting ram needs time toretract, when 'standby' is selected, a fewseconds delay will be required before thependulum can be released by selecting 'test'.

10 Release the pendulum by depressing the left hand(or release) lever to the 'test' position. Thiswill allow the pendulum to fall immediately.

11) After the test piece has broken or deformedt readthe energy value on the Izod scale.

12) a) Select Izod on 'select- lever to return thependulum to the 'start' position.

b)or Leave 'select' lever on 'standby' positionuntil pendulum swing stopsr then restpendulum on base stop.

c)or Select 'Izod' to engage lifting mechanism, andbefore the pendulum is raised sufficiently tolatch in, reselect 'standby' on the 'select'lever, which lower the pendulum to the bottom

13) Remove broken or deformed specimen.

6.2 ~r the Charpy Test

1) On Charpy-Izod Combined machines, remove the Izodrelease box, if fitted. On pneumatic machines, also transfer the air connector.

2) Fit either the 150 J or 300 J Charpy tup andstriker as required.

3)

4) Fit test piece support blocks, and tighten thesocket head bolts.

5) Check the gap between the support blocks with thetongs or gauge.

6) pick up the specimen with the tongs, and positionon the support blocks with the notch to the lefti.e. facing away from the striker. N.B. Thetongs supplied have a single protrusionaccurately machined central on the gauge lengtharm. The gauge length is a sliding fit betweenthe support blocks. Care must be taken whenopening and removing the tongs to ensure that thetest piece position is not disturbed.

7) Follow the test procedure described in the Izodtest, except that select lever is moved to the'Charpy' position.
