2013 Speakers and session descriptions

Pre-Conference Session – Calendar/Idea Exchange – Laurie Kloepper, ADC/SSD

Feeling mentally exhausted trying to come up with new activities each month? What better place to get

ideas than from others who do exactly what you do, day in and day out. Come prepared to share at least

one (or two or three) super successful activity – have all the instructions written down, including everything

you need from start to finish: items needed, space needed, target audience, time required, etc.

Please bring at least 50 copies and make sure to include your contact information in case

someone needs to get in touch with you.

Laurie is the Resident Life Director at Dooley Center in Atchison, Kansas, a position she’s held

for 20 years. She has been an Activity Professional for 30 years. She has been involved in

local, state and national activity associations for over 20 years. Her passion is those who have

Alzheimer’s.

Putting the Passion Back In Your Profession – Cindy Bradshaw, MS, ACC

When you first started in the field of activities, remember how happy you were? How you got the job…and

how you couldn’t wait to be in the field? Remember all the exciting ideas that you had, and all the plans

you had to implement? Where did that person go? Let’s recapture that feeling… In this keynote presenta-

tion, Cindy will share points for restoring that passion for your work, and empower you to recapture your

zest for your profession.

“Touch & Go” Sensory Programs – Cindy Bradshaw, MS, ACC

The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little “extra”, cliché, yes a bit, yet that is what

defines an individualized sensory plan from the generic program that so many conduct with their cli-

ents. Without bubbles, lotion and stuffed animals, however would you conduct your 1:1 visits? This ses-

sion will take you through the process of assessing, identifying, adapting and in turn developing more resi-

dent centered sensory programs.

NCCAP Certification – Cindy Bradshaw, MS, ACC

Are you looking to take your professionalism to the next level? Learn what it takes to become nationally

certified. You may already have some of the necessary components and be closer than you think. Certifi-

cation meets the requirements for F Tag 249 and shows your elders, families, staff, colleagues and survey-

ors that you have gone above and beyond to provide your elders with the best quality of life possible. Take

that next step…attend the session.

Cindy Bradshaw is the Executive Director of the National Certification Council for Activity

Professionals. She has her Master’s degree in Aging Services Management and Psychology.

She has over 30 years experience in geriatrics, to include assistant, director and consultant.

She teaches the nationally recognized Modular Education Program for Activity Professionals

(MEPAP).

Enriching the Lives of People with Alzheimer’s – Marie Marley

Attendees will hear the author’s story of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s interspersed with details

of numerous enriching activities she did with him. There will also be a focus on entertaining people in

various states of the disease with many ways to use music to engage people with

Alzheimer’s.

Marie Marley is the author of Come Back Early Today: A Memoir of Love, Alzheimer’s

and Joy, a Santa Fe Writer’s Project Literary Awards finalist. She has also published over 120

articles about dementia care giving on the Huffington Post and the Alzheimer’s Reading Room

and has made several presentations about Alzheimer’s Care giving at long-term care facilities.

Science for Seniors – Gloria Hoffner, BA, ADC, AC-BC

In this session participants will learn through hands-on experience how to build a one hour science program

for their residents including where to find information, video and materials resources, the science behind

the benefits of a learning program and do actual hands on, low cost (less than $20 total) safe experiments

they will be able to use immediately on topics including planets, rocks, volcanoes, tornadoes, oceans, rain

forest, pollutions and magnets.

Transit To Adventure – Gloria Hoffner, BA, ADC, AC-BC

A travel day program is more than a video, food and hats. Participants will learn how to create a multi-

cultural event that includes native lands and customs of residents and staff members. For example, tooth

fairy customs in China, wedding customs in Scotland and birthday celebrations in Greece. Participants

will leave the program with an outline for a complete week of fun activities for one country.

Gloria is the owner of Guitar with Gloria and Science for Seniors. She is the author of the

book, Science for Seniors, published by Idyll Arbor Inc. as well as a columnist for Creative

Forecasting Magazine and About.com website. She is the 2010 first place winner of the

NCCAP Award for Best Practice and the 2012 Sterling Healthcare Humanitarian Award.

Intergenerational Groups in a Snap!!! – JoAnn Jordan, MT-BC

Participants will receive a format for planning intergenerational groups in less time. They will leave with

at least two sessions in hand and gain a ton of music ideas for the mix of ages.

A Music Toolbox for the Non-Musician – JoAnn Jordan, MT-BC

Build your toolbox of music and ways of incorporating music in your work with residents. Being a musi-

cian is NOT required.

JoAnn Jordan is a board certified music therapist with a passion for intergenerational groups.

With over 25 years of working in senior living communities, she brings a wealth of experiences

to share.

Meeting the Needs of Many: Adapting Activities for Dementia – Debbie Hommel, ACC/MC/EDU,

CTRS

The activity/recreation professional is challenged daily to meet the diverse needs and abilities of the resi-

dent or client with dementia. Very often, the activity/recreation professional is expected to engage many

residents who are in varied stages of dementia within one group, which is very difficult to say the least.

The session will explore various assessment and staging tools associated with cognitive impairment while

also associating specific activities, approaches, programs and interventions which are suitable per each

stage of impairment.

Utilizing the “Hand in Hand” Training Program – Debbie Hommel, ACC/MC/EDU, CTRS

The Hand in Hand Training Program was created by CMS and is an excellent resource for all activity pro-

fessionals. This session will review the content of the document, exploring the learning activities and

learning materials provided with in the program. Methods to implement the training program in care facili-

ties will be discussed. Interactive learning methods will be demonstrated.

Debbie is a Certified Activity Consultant through NCCAP; certified CTRS through NCTRC with

over 35 years experience providing consultation and training to activity and recreation leaders.

She instructs the MEPAP course through independent study and has developed over 28

independent study programs, all pre-approved through NCCAP.

The Golden Experience – Kareen King & Emilou Golden puppet

The Golden Experience is a heart-warming account of the lives of individuals living with dementia and

other age-related limitations. Kareen shares original songs and stories based on her work as a former Ac-

tivities Supervisor (currently Creative Engagement Facilitator/Consultant) in a long-term care community.

She weaves philosophical concepts developed by Naomi Feil, Martin Buber, and Abraham Maslow into

her presentation, providing a view of the inner world of those who are often overlooked. She also applauds

the role of the caregiver, reminding us all that the golden opportunities are often in the little things that are

of great value. Participants go away with a greater propensity toward empathy, creativity, and a renewed

passion for the world of long-term care.

Kareen is founder of The Golden Experience : Enriching Lives in Long-Term Care settings

through keynotes, concerts, workshops (www.thegoldenexperience.com). Kareen is a

Registered Drama Therapist and Creative Engagement Consultant. She has keynoted for

various conferences nationwide. Her CD’s have been used as a resource for staff training

with a focus on person-centered care.
