Onehundredyearsago,HenryFord’smovingassemblylinetransformedDetroitintothebirthplaceofmanufacturingtechnology.Today,southeastMichiganremainsthehomeofglobalautomotiveinnovation,anditisanimportantcenterofFaurecia’sdevelopmentandproductionactivities.

Astheworld’ssixth-largestsuppliertotheautoindustry,Faureciaofferssolutionsthatmakevehicleslighter,morecomfortableandmoreconnected.January13-16,Faureciacelebratesthe2014NorthAmericanInternationalAutoShowbydemonstratingthenexttechnologiesthattheautomotivecommunitywillbeofferinginside,outsideandunderthevehicle.

Fromnoise-cancelingspeakersintegratedintoexhaustsystemstoinstrumentpanelswithgesture-basedcontrols,fromultra-luxuriousseatingforchauffeuredvehicles—withseparatepositionsforworking,entertainmentandmassage—tointeriorstructuresmadewith100percentnaturalmaterials,Faureciadisplaysnewconceptsforthefutureandnewproductsthatarereadyfortheroad.

Faureciahasredefined‘upscale’bymovingpremiumquality,luxuryandconveniencedowntomidmarketandbasemodels.Traditionally,innovationsinvehicleinteriorsappearfirstinhigh-endvehiclesbeforeflowingdowntothecarsthataveragedriversbuy.FortheNorthAmericanInternationalAutoShow,however,FaureciaInteriorSystemsrevitalizeseverydayvehicleswithplentifulinnovationsfromarmresttoglovebox,frominstrumentpaneltofloorboard.Performance2.0offerssmartandpracticalideasforaddressingdesign,surfaces,connectivityandcomfort.

ThiscoordinatedarrayofFaureciatechnologiespopulatesPerformance2.0,aninteriorconceptwithwhichthemainstreamconsumercaninteractandanewdescriptionofinteriorperformancethatemphasizeslightweight,refinedmaterialsanddecorationwithfunctionality.

ThePerformance2.0demonstratorisacutawayfront-cabininteriorbuiltaroundbrand-newideasfortheinstrumentpanel,driver’sdoor,console,floorandinteriorintegrationwithseating.

Instrument Panel 2.0Theslim-designPerformance2.0instrumentpanelislightinweightandbrilliantinitstechnology.Itfeaturestworetractablescreens.Thefirstisahead-updisplay(HUD)thatreplacesconventionalgaugeswithasee-throughviewofimportantdrivinginformation.Placedabovethesteeringwheel,thissmallprojectionmodule,calledacombiner,liesflatandhiddenawaywhentheengineisoffandtiltsupwhenthecarisstarted.Additionally,theinstrumentpaneloffersaretractableviewingandinteractionareausingalarger,8-inchtouchscreenintheareawhereaconventionalinfotainmentsystemmighthavebeenlocated.

Thespaciousnessoftheinstrumentpanelisboundedbybrightandstylishairventsthatshuntraditionalfins.Instead,thePerformance2.0demonstratorfeatureslargeopendriver-orienteddecorativeventstotheleft,rightandabovethesteeringwheel,aswellastwodefrostervents,alargecentraldiffuseventcalledSmartVent2.0andDecoVent,adecorativeairventonthepassengerside.Thesesleekventscombinedecorationwithfunctionality

Forexample,thepassenger’sDecoVentdisplaysgraphicsinthedaytimeandisbacklitatnight.Inaddition,belowthecentralretractablescreen,DecoControlusescapacitiveswitcheswithhapticfeedbackwhileablackpaneleffectpresentsiconsforinteractionwithairblowersandconnectionstoinfotainmentfeatures,whichlightuponlywhenneeded.Lightweight,naturalfibersandtexturesformmuchofthesubstanceoftheinstrumentpanel.AspaciousswathacrossthetopofthecenterandpassengersideportionsoftheIPiscomposedofLigneos,areal-woodmaterialdevelopedbyFaureciaforuseoverlargeareasofinteriorsurfaces.Itisformedfromanatural-fiber-basedcarrier.Betweenthatareaandthewindscreenisatextile-coveredcarrier,andLigneosalsolinesdriver-sideairvents.Theinsideofthegloveboxiscoveredwithcork,arenewablematerial.FunctionaldecorationisaddedtotheIPthroughafoil-coveredtop,whileDecoLightaddsalightingpatternatnightanddisplaysablackpaneleffectwhennotinuse.

ThebrightestpartofPerformance2.0isitsveryintelligenttechnology.Forexample,thepassengercanopentheradialslidinggloveboxwithasimplegesture.Amerewaveofthehandcommandstheboxtoextendoutandrotateopen.

Allthisbrillianceisachievedwiththelightestoftouches.Faurecia’sSlimIPcanbemanufacturedfromlessmaterialthanconventionalinstrumentpanels.Thenatural-fibercarrierstranslatetolessmaterialaswell,reducingweightfrom1,600gramspersquaremeterdownto1,000gramspersquaremeter.

TechnologyspiralsupwardinPerformance2.0withthearmrestatopthecenterconsole,whichspinsoutandopenswithjustatouch.Insidetheconsoleisawirelesschargingareaforsmartphones,neatlyhiddenbehindacontinuousflexibletambourdoorcoveredwithLigneoswooddecoration.Thesmartphonestorageareaalsoprovidesnear-fieldcommunicationandcouplesthephonewiththevehicle’sownantennatoenhancethephone’sconnectivity.

InPerformance2.0,theowner’sphonebecomesahubforinformationandentertainmentforpassengersinboththefrontandbackseats.ThroughMirrorLinktechnology,aniPhone’sscreenisdisplayedonthecenterretractablescreenforpassengers,whileinformationavailabletothedriverisrestrictedtothatwhichisneededtooperatethevehicle,therebyavoidingdistractions.MirrorLinkrecognizesthephoneowner’splaylistandcaninteractwithitontheretractablescreen.Itcanalsostreamthesmartphone’scontentstoatabletmountedonthebackofthedriver’sseattodisplayvideos,sightseeingupdatesandotherinformation.Everythingthatcanberetrievedonlinebyasmartphonecanbedisplayedonthebacktabletthroughacompletelywirelessconnectionthatusesagesture-basedinterface.

Door panelOneofFaurecia’smostpracticalnewcomfortinnovationsisaheatedarmrestforthePerformance2.0driver’sdoor.AFaureciainventionthatalreadyisbecomingpopularinchillyenvironments,theheatedarmresthasbeenadoptedbyMercedes-BenzforitsnewS-Classvehicle.Thearmrestiscoveredwithatextilethatisbacklitanddisplayspatternsinthedaytime.Theforwardportionofthearmrestiscoveredwithanunusualcoloredanodizedaluminumsurfacecontainingengravedgraphics.Thesurfacecanbefashionedinyellow,green,blackorgray.Performance2.0representsthefirsttimethismaterialhasbeenusedthiswayincars.

Lightweightnaturalmaterialsshapethedoorpanel,whichisbasedonanatural-fibercarrierandcoveredwithcarpettocushionthedriver.Thecarpetmaterialharmonizeswiththefloorcarpet.Thedoorpanel’spocketismadeofLigneco,Faurecia’sownvisible-natural-fibermaterial,exposingsurfacesusuallyhiddenandcovered,therebynotaddingweightfromcoveringmaterial.

Eventhefloorisunique,withridgesandwovenpatternsmoldedintotheareasinfrontofthepassenger’sseat,leavingroomforfloormats,whilethevisualdashinsulatorcombinesfunctionwithdecorativesurfacedesign.

Driver Seat Seatingcomfortandconveniencearecriticaltoadvancedperformance,andtheseatinsidethePerformance2.0demonstratorshowcasestheseattributesthroughthecombinedtechnologyofFaureciaAutomotiveSeatingandInteriorSystems.Insteadofconventionalcut-and-sewcovering,theseatssportcover-carvingtechnology.Inthisprocess,atextileiscoveredwithfoamonthebackandthenpressedintoplacetogivetheseatshapeandaseamlesssurface.Theseatcontinuestheuseofaluminumdecorationonitscomfort-controlswitchesandisdecoratedwithanaluminumstripontheside.

AcombinationofdesignfeaturespositionsthePerformance2.0seatverydistinctlyinitsstylingbetweenFaurecia’sSculptedCoverandtraditionalmaterial.TheSculptedCoveronthefrontcushionoftheseatpresentsasmoothsurfaceandeliminatescreases.ItissewntogetherwithtraditionalmaterialusingadecorativesewinglinecalledtheFlatSeam,anexclusivedecorativeseamthatinvolvesfourthreadstoofferanendlesscolormix.

TheplasticbackrestofthePerformance2.0seatislighterthanthatofstandardseats,anditincludesadockingstationfora10-inch-screentablet.Anadjustablebuttonkeepsthetabletinastableposition;thetabletholderisaFaurecia-patentedsystem.Thetabletcanbechargedusinganintegratedwirelesschargingmodule.Withitselevatedleveloftechnology,Performance2.0bringsanewFaureciaapproachtoaperformanceinteriorthatcombinesHMIconnectivity,kinematicsdesign,decorationandcomfortexpertise.

Justasaperson’svoicemayrevealmuchabouttheindividual’slineageandcharacter,avehicle’svoiceoftenindicatesitsstatusandanticipatedperformance.Acousticsareavitalelementofthecar’spersonaandbuyershaveexpectationsofthewaytheirvehiclesshouldsoundintrafficorontheopenroad.Apremiumcarshouldprojectrefinedpower.Asmallercarmaysoundlesspowerfulbutbrandidentificationmayrequireasportyexhaustnote.

Exhaust Dynamic Sound Generation (EDSG™)Thevoiceofdieselpowertrainsmaybenearlysilencedbyafter-treatmentdevicesthataredevelopedtoreduceemissions.Manufacturersofdiesel-poweredvehiclesarerequiredtoaddemissionscontroldeviceswhichnotonlyreduceemissionsbutalsosuppressexhaustnoise.Thesehigh-powered,premiumdieselvehicleslackapremiumexhaustnote.Consequently,driversoftenarediscouragedwhentheirsixoreight-cylinderenginelacksthefull-throatedsoundtheyexpecttohear.

FaureciaEmissionsControlTechnologieshasdevelopedacleversolutiontothisconundrum:advancedtechnologyenablingcarmanufacturerstogenerateextrasoundfordieselvehicles.Thesystem,placedattheendoftheexhaustline,adjacenttothetailpipe,incorporatesaspeakerencapsulatedinametalorplastichousing.Thespeakerisactivatedbythevehicle’sengineelectroniccontrolunit(ECU),whichpromptsittoemitspecificallydesignedsounds.ThesoundlevelandtypearecomputedbytheengineECU,basedonthevehicle’sspeedandengineload,andthetechnologyduplicatessoundsthataresimilartothoseofpowerfulgasolinecars.

ExhaustDynamicSoundGenerationalsoprovidesnewflexibilitytovehicledesigners.Increatingtheexhaustsystem,thedesignernormallyislockedintoadefinedsetofexhaustpackagingspecificationsthatareverydifficulttochangelaterinthedesignprocess.DynamicSoundGenerationallowstheexhaustsoundtobeshapedatanytimeinthatprocess,evenatthelastminute,freeingthedesignerfrompreviousrestrictions.

Exhaust Dynamic Sound Cancellation (EDSC)Thereverseproblemimpactsdualturbo-chargedgasoline-poweredvehicles;theyoftenproducetoomuchnoise,andmaynotbethepowerfulnotethatisexpectedbythedriver.Forthesevehicles,Faureciahasdevelopedtheequivalentofanoise-cancellingheadsetfortheexhaustsystem.Thissolutionplacesaspeakerintheexhaustassembly,neartheendofthetailpipe,tocancelafullrangeoffrequencies.AnalgorithmintegratedintotheECUproducesasoundwavethatiscompletelyoutofphasewiththeoffendingsoundwavetravelingthroughthepipe.Asthedriverthrottlesuporslowsdown,theECUconstantlymonitorsthefrequencyandchangesthesoundthatthespeakergeneratestokeeptheopposingfrequenciesinsync.Attheendofthetailpipe,thesefrequenciescanceleachotherout,leavingareducedlevelofexhaustnoise.

TheFaureciatechnologythentakesthissoundcontrolastepfarther.Aftertheundesirednoiseiscanceled,theECUusesthesamespeakertogenerateamorepleasingandappropriatesoundinitsplace,justasitdoesforDynamicSoundGenerationindiesels.Thetypesofsoundthatthissystemcanproduceareunlimited,butforpracticalpurposesthesystemcreatesanengineexhaustsoundthatenhancestheimageofthevehicle.Afour-cylindermidsizecar,forinstance,couldassumethesoundofasix-cylinderpremiumvehicle.Thesystemcanevenbeusedforhybridstocancelouttheexhaustnoisewhenthegasoline-poweredengineisrunning,mak-ingtheICEtransitionstransparenttotheuser.

Themosteffectivecombinationsofdynamicsoundgenerationanddynamicsoundcancellationarecurrentlybeingconsideredbytheindustry.Inmanyvehicles,thealgorithmwillbeintegratedintotheengineECU;inothers,astandalonecontrolmodulewillbeinstalledtomodifythesoundbycommunicatingwiththeengineECU.Faureciaisreadyandleadingwiththeentirescopeofsounddesignoptions,fromECUtospeakerstopackagingofthetechnology.

Newpowertrainstrategiesutilizehigherhorsepower,low-ercylindercountengines.CoupledwithEDSC™,EDSG™canbeusedtoenhancetheotherwiseunderstatedsoundoftheseengines,bettermatchingthevehiclesoundtocustomerexpectations.

FaureciaispreparingitsExhaustDynamicSoundTechnologiesforthe2017modelyear,andindustryfascinationwiththistechnologyisalreadygrowing.Halfadozenglobalautomakershaveexpressedinterestinthesystemforbothpremiumandmainstreamvehicles.

The DemonstratorDuringtheNorthAmericanInternationalAutoShow,FaureciaisdemonstratingDynamicSoundCancellationandDynamicSoundGeneration.

AttheFaureciabooth,visitorshavetheopportunitytoexperiencethesetechnologiesbyusinganiPadtoplayavarietyofrecordedsoundsignatures,startingwithafullpassiveexhaustsound,thencancellingthenoiseandaddingthesoundsofasix-oreight-cylindercartoafour-cylindervehicleengine.Inthedemonstrator,thehardwarethatmakesExhaustDynamicSoundpossibleisvisibleunderafull-scalemodelofavehicle’srearfascia.

Ford Edge Lightweight Cold-End System: Stronger and LighterFaureciautilizesitsAdaptiveValve™tocreatealightweightconceptbasedonthecurrentproductioncold-endsystemsuppliedbyFaureciaEmissionsControlTechnologiesfortheFordEdge.Theconceptdemonstratesthepotentialforasignificantweightreduction;inthiscaseover40%.Theself-actuatedAdaptiveValve™reducesbothexhaustnoiseandsystemmass.Placedintheintermediatepipe,beforetherearmuffler,itsignificantlycontributestoweightreductionbyallowingthetotalmufflervolumetobesignificantlyreduced.Combinedwithanumberofothermassreducinginitiatives,likethinnerpipesandsimplersilencerdesigns,thetotalcold-endmassisfurtherreduceduntilthesystem’smassisreducedbyalmost9kg(over20pounds).

Theautoindustryisintheprocessofreinventingthematerialsfromwhichitmakescarsandtrucksasitpreparestosubstitutecompositesformoreconventionalplasticsandmetals.Faureciaisreadytoleadtheexpansionoftheroleofcompositesinthecreationofstructural,semi-structuralanddecorationpartsforpassengervehicles.

Thevalueofcompositesinmakingvehiclesmuchlighterhasbeenacknowledgedformanyyearsbythosewhobuildracingcarsandsport&luxuryvehicles.Nowcompositesarepreparingtoplayaneverlargerroleinthedesignofvehiclestructural,semi-structuralandA-classbodyparts,promptedbygovernmentregulationsthatsetstrictermileagestandardsforvehiclesallovertheworld:lighter-weightsteelswillnotbesufficienttodecreasethevehicleweightmorethan20%.

The Composites ChallengeIntheautoindustry,compositeshaveshownupprimarilyinthesportandluxurysegments,andeventhenonlyverysparsely.Compositesareabouttobecomemuchmorewidelyapplied,however,asFaureciaAutomotiveExteriorsdevelopsmethodstoproducecompositesinhighvolumes,applyingbreakthroughprocessesandmaterials,foruseinmass-marketapplicationsatanaffordablecost.

Twooptionsareavailableopenintermsofprocessandmaterials.

Thefirstoptionislinkedtotheuseofthermosets,whichcombinefiberglassand/orcarbonfibers.Althoughthermosetisdurable,itcannotbeeasilyrecycled;itonlycanbebrokenintopieces.Thesecondoptionreplacesthermosetwithathermoplasticresin,whichcouldbemeltedandreused.Additionally,thermoplasticcompositescanbewelded,whilethermosetmustbegluedorscrewedtostructures,aprocessthataddsweightforjoining.Itmayalsoabsorbsomeenergyduringacrash.

Thermoplasticpresentsitsownchallenges,however—issuesthatFaureciaistakingoninitsresearchingofmethodologiestoproducecarbon/thermoplasticcompositesthatovercomeinherentbarriersinthematerial.Amongtheseobstaclesisthefactthatthemeltingpointofthermoplasticinacompositeisonly300°to320°F,insufficienttotoleratetheelectro-coatingprocesses,withtemperaturesofmorethan390°F,usedforallmass-producedvehicles.

Also,whileexistingthermosetpartsmayrequireupto20minutestomanufacturesemi-structuralorstructuralparts,Faureciaisworkingondevelopingefficient,short-cycle-timeprocessesforthermosetresinsaswell.

Composite solutions for today’s and tomorrow’s vehiclesFaureciaexhibitsasingle,stylizeddemonstratorduringtheNorthAmericanInternationalAutoShowtoshowcasethefullrangeofitscompositetechnologyknow-how,fromvisibletosemi-structuralandstructuralparts.

Intheexhibit,Faureciaalsoshowsexposedcarbonparts,adomainofexcellencemasteredbyFaureciaAutomotiveExteriors.Thatmarketsegmentisgrowingrapidlynotonlyinsportscars,butalsoinpremiumvehicles.

Despitethemeticulousprocessesrequiredforexposedcarbonfibers,automakersareeagertousevisiblecarbonexteriorcomponentstodifferentiatetheirvehiclesanddisplayahigher-endversionoftheircar.

Createdforlongversionsoftheworld’smostsophisticatedchauffeuredlimousines,OASISprovideshigh-endfunctionalities,intelligentkinematicsandbest-in-classcomfort.

Stylish configurations for work, play and relaxation TheOASISseatconvertstofourpositions:theentryconfigurationforenteringthevehicle,theuprightbusinesspositionforworkingandcommunicating,theentertainmentpositionforenjoyingvideoandaudio,andthenearlyreclinedpositionforrelaxation.

Initsrelaxationposition,OASISreclinestoanearlyhorizontalorientation.Individuallyadjustablelegrestssupportthepassenger,aconsiderableimprovementoverothervehiclesthatfurnishonlyasinglerestforbothlegs.AsOASISreclines,itsheadrestisreleasedtotransformintoaneckroll.Onceinrelaxationmode,theoccupantcancommandmassagersthatareappliedtotheshoulders,back,seatcushionandcalves.Twentymassagecellsperformshiatsu-like,focusedpressureforastrongandeffectivemassagesession.

AnewtechnologyfromFaureciaAutomotiveSeatingflipsthewaythatdesignerslookatseatingsurfaces.WithFau-reciasculptedcovers,insteadoftheseatdeterminingtheshapeofitscover,thecovernowcandeterminetheshapeoftheseat.

Inconventionalseats,theshapeofthecoverisattainedbyattachingaloosecoveratseveralpointstoafoampad.Faureciasculptedcovers,however,embed3Dshapesandallmarkinglinesonthetrimcoveritself.

ProprietarycovercarvingtechnologyfromFaureciamakesitpossiblefordesignerstodiscardtheirpreconceptionsofthewaythatlinesandpatternsmustbeincorporatedintoautomotivetrimmingprocesses.Whensculptedcoversarecreated,thecoverfaceisshapedonamoldandthefabricisheldin3Dbyafoamlayer,creatingunconventionalsurfacesandsmoothsurfacetransitions.Additionally,markinglinesarecompletelyindependentfromtiedownsandmayhaveaprogressivedepthandverysmallradius.Sculptedseatsbecomeevenmoredistinctivewhen3Dembossingisemployed.Covercarvingallows3Dsurfaceeffectstobecreatedandpositionedpreciselyonthesurfaceofthecover.

Althoughitproducescoversthatcouldbemistakenforthehandiworkofartisans,sculptingtechnologyhastheadvantageofbeingextremelyrepeatablewhileprovidingunmatchedcraftsmanshipthatwouldbeimpossibletoachievewithtraditionaltrimmingtechniques.

Thesculptedtechniqueallowsautomakerstooffercoversinmanyvarieties,allofwhichusethesamefoampad,becausethestylingisinthecover,ratherthaninthepad.ManufacturerscanassumeawholenewperspectiveonpersonalizingseatswiththecapabilitiesofsculptedcoversfromFaurecia.
