WATER’S LANDSCAPEChilean artist Teresa Cerda will fea-ture 35 paintings in a colorful exhib-it entitled Water’s Landscape. The exhibit opens in The Gallery of the Ashe Arts Center on February 12 and runs through March 21. The opening reception will be from 5–7 P.M. on Thursday, February 13.

Water’s Landscape is inspired by the color blue. Teresa uses blue to depict landscapes that contain water from different places and in different states, from liq-uid to snow, and from the sea to a pond. Water’s Landscape is geometric, it’s abstract. The different horizons and blue col-ors are based on direct, physical, and intellectual experimen-tation of mixing media and combining old art techniques with encaustic, gesso, egg tempera, and gold and silver leaf on wood panels.

Teresa Cerda was born in Santiago de Chile. She lived there until 1990, when she moved to Madrid Spain, where she resided until 2005. Since then she has lived with her family in Boone. She is frequently featured in solo exhibitions in western North Carolina including the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts in 2009. She was a Regional Artists Project Grant recipient in 2011. For more information about Water’s Landscape, contact the Ashe County Arts Council.

The Ashe Arts Centercelebrates the holiday seasonand Ashe County Christmas trees with beautifully decorated trees. This winter wonderlandhas been created with something for everyone and represents community involvement with the arts.

Grandma’s TreeFamily connections

and memories are part of this nostalgic tree with the

ornaments handmade by the grand-children of Joy Dollar, Elaine Bentley, and Kathleen Turnmire. Pictures of Ashley &

Addison Dollar, Evan, Eli & Ean Johnson, and Cierra Bledsoe are included in this multi-gen-erational tree with a theme of family love and

connections.

Navidad en España Barbara Sears, Lynne Eastburn, and Jane Davis have

decorated a tree with symbols of Spain’s culture. Castanets, fans, red and white roses and carnations tell the story of the

flamenco dance. The Spanish flag’s colors of red and gold are repre-sented in the red and gold ribbon with which the tree has been trimmed.

Spanish flags, ornaments with a map of Spain on them are symbolic of the pride Spaniards have in their country. Poinsettias are found in Spanish homes for decoration and serve as decoration on the tree as well as at the

base of the tree. The nativity is an integral part of a Spanish home’s decoration and is usually placed underneath the tree, as it is here.

“Seasoned” with a StoryBooks under the Christmas tree make excellent treasures. From smallbooks to large

books – stories serve as the foundation of our lives. The Ashe County Public Library has wrapped up an adventure or two to serve as the foundation for the tree. Viewers are invited to figure

out how many books it takes to decorate a tree? The project made possible with the generous support and cooperation of the Friends of the Library.

Bring the Outdoors InJudy Current and Robin King’s tree is filled with a combination of ornaments, natural plant materials, and ribbons that showcase

the beauty of winter. When snow falls and the holiday season is upon us, the outdoors is filled with natural beauty and objects that remind us of Christmas. Sleighs, birds, berries, vines, and ribbon come together as the outdoors come inside.

Red and White are the main colors.

Up on the RooftopJoyce Cain and Catherine Finch have used an old quilting technique of the yo-yo pattern to create ornaments, garlands, wreaths, lollipops, and

other holiday items to decorate a tree with an updated twist on a favorite holiday song.

Away in a MangerDecorators Vicki Mincey and Theresa Curd have created a tree that will take you to that historic night when a precious baby was born in a stable.

Imagine the stable environment with sheep, ox and donkeys… the smell of hay, the rough barn wood textures, and the purity of a soft newborn baby. Of course the story would not be complete without angels singing on high and the star! This tree is a celebration of our Lord and Savior’s birth.

My Favorite Things The Ashe County Arts Council’s tree with

handcrafted holiday decorations from local artists Teresa Baldwin, Linda Bruce, Jennie

Bush, Evalynn Halsey, Becki Henderson-Gow, Ronnie Hughes, Betsy Isaacs, Paulette Lawrence, Arlene Lundquist, Theresa

McGrath, Judy Mitchell, Pat Morrison, Cathey Purvey, Cheryl Roberts, Ellen

Sinford, Lyn Soeder, Meg Wiles, Cheryl Williams, and others. The

original ornaments by these artists include works in

wood, clay, metal, glass, paper and fabric. The

ornaments are for sale and make great

presents!
